This is a story from January 15, 2009. It's not my story, but an inspiring one. US Airways Flight 1549 on its way from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing due to their low altitude, pilots Chesley ‘Sully' Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane in the Hudson River. All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with only a few serious injuries. This water landing of a powerless jetliner with no deaths became known as the Miracle on the Hudson. On January 15th, 2009, at 3:25 PM, a US Airways Flight, carrying 155 passengers, departed from LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York, for Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a routine flight that quickly became anything but routine. Shortly after takeoff, both of the plane's engines failed, forcing the captain to make a life-and-death decision. This is an auspicious week in aviation history. 13 years ago, on January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, on a flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing due to their low altitude, pilots Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan.[1] All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with only a few serious injuries.   This water landing of a powerless jetliner with no deaths became known as the Miracle on the Hudson,[2] and a National Transportation Safety Board official described it as "the most successful ditching in aviation history".[3] The Board rejected the notion that the pilot could have avoided ditching by returning to LaGuardia or diverting to nearby Teterboro Airport. Everyone knows this story. It was dramatized in the 2016 film Sully, starring Tom Hanksas Sullenberger.Today we have 5 amazing guests who are intimately involved in this story, Vallie Collins, David Sanderson, Ben Bostic, Stephen Mallon and Paula Paul.   Thanks for listening to the show! Nature likes symmetry; if we look at a tree, we will see the same pattern of human veins in its branches. Life is cyclical; life is born and dies with methodic precision season after season. In his book, The Fourth Turning, W. Strauss, looking at history's cycles, points out a pattern of significant tragedies every four generations. To Dave Sanderson, one of the survivors of The Miracle of Hudson, Strauss' words made total sense. Sanderson realized all of us will have our plane crash moments; what we learn from them and how we react is what matters. Dave Sanderson was seated in the back row of US Airways Flight 1549, which crashed in the Hudson River in January 2009. At the moment of the crash, he heard the voice of his mother, who had told him to always do the right thing, and God would take care of the rest. That day, ignoring his hypothermia, his fear, and ignoring the fact that he was risking his own life, Dave helped dozens of people escape from that sinking plane. In this episode, Dave gives us details of his life-changing experience, how it inspired him to help others, and the tools he got from it to deal with adversity. We talk about those plane crash moments we will all go through eventually and the connection he made between the pandemic and his experience at the Hudson River. Miracles are defined as a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency. You have to put the time in to get your outcome. -       The most successful people are those who started with nothing and had to grow.   Leadership -       When you are in a crisis situation, you realize that the people who you didn't think were leaders all of a sudden are those who step up. -       People who step up and focus on the outcome are the ones that become leaders. -       Leadership is about people taking direction and/or giving action so people can survive or thrive. -       When leaders stand up, they give certainty and direction. -       When leadership steps up, you have to use skills you've learned, employ them, and give direction. -       The people with the most uncertainty will go to the people with the most certainty in any situation.   Building A New Business -       First it was about the story, and then it translated into the lessons from that day. -       Dave started speaking for free at churches and started working his way up.
