Feeling overwhelmed by your endless to-do list? Pilots have a system to stay calm, focused, and in control—even at 38,000 feet. In this episode, Bobby Dutton shares the Aviate, Navigate, Communicate framework to help you prioritize like a pro, manage your time efficiently, and thrive in business and life. In this high-impact episode of Engineer Your Success, Dr. James Bryant interviews Bobby Dutton, a computer engineer who found his passion at the intersection of technical expertise and creative expression.  Bobby shares how he built GBM Six (formerly Groove Boston Mission Six), transforming the college concert experience by focusing on technical excellence rather than traditional performer-centered approaches. His events create immersive experiences using engineering principles to maximize impact.  The conversation reveals Bobby's powerful "Think Like a Pilot" framework based on three principles: Aviate: Focus completely on what matters most right now Navigate: Plan your direction with intentional calendaring Communicate: Process information efficiently (including achieving inbox zero) Bobby dismantles the multitasking myth, explaining how single-tasking with full attention creates dramatically better results. Learn his color-coding calendar system that distinguishes between time-sensitive tasks and flexible commitments, plus his email management approach that prevents the inbox from controlling your day. For engineers and entrepreneurs struggling with overwhelm, this episode provides actionable systems to regain control, enhance productivity, and find your flow state. As the founder of Groove Boston Mission Six (now GBM Six), Bobby revolutionized the college concert experience by shifting focus from traditional single-artist performances to technically innovative, music-variety events that better align with modern music consumption habits. Bobby's approach to event production centers on creating memorable experiences by reallocating budgets from talent fees to advanced technical elements like lighting and visual effects. His company's mission is simple yet profound: "to make people happy" through immersive, high-energy events across the country. Beyond his event business, Bobby is a licensed private pilot who applies aviation principles to his business and personal life. He advocates for "thinking like a pilot" through the framework of "aviate, navigate, communicate" - prioritizing focus on the present task, planning effectively, and managing communications strategically. This methodical approach helps him maintain productivity and clarity amid competing demands. Bobby is passionate about productivity systems, particularly what he calls "aggressive calendaring" - ensuring calendars accurately reflect actual time usage and priorities. His methodical approach to email management and task prioritization stems from his engineering background and pilot's discipline. Substack Week: Engineering Strategy, Bridging Technical Excellence with Business Success With Aleix Morgadas In this Substack Week episode, we explore the critical intersection of engineering strategy and business success with Aleix Morgadas, an engineering strategy consultant focusing on sociotechnical aspects of high-stake business challenges. Aleix shares insights from his experience helping organizations align their technical capabilities with business objectives, while offering practical approaches to developing and implementing effective engineering strategies. The Genesis of Engineering Strategy Personal experience sparked Aleix's journey into engineering strategy when he joined a large company and found himself grappling with strategic decision-making in engineering. He identified a crucial gap: while strategy was well-established in product and business domains, engineering organizations often lacked strategic frameworks for participating in key decisions. This realization led him to start writing about his struggles and insights, helping others navigate similar challenges through his newsletter. "I found that engineering was missing a way to be part of the decision making process, and we needed to be clear on the problems and challenges that engineering organizations face." Breaking Down the Four-Step Process Drawing inspiration from Richard Rumelt's work on strategy, Aleix presents a comprehensive framework for developing engineering strategy. The process emphasizes the importance of understanding organizational context and identifying shared challenges before taking action. "Solve the shared pains - that's why we need to uncover those pains in the first place." The framework consists of four key steps: Context Understanding: Begin by defining your business context, as strategy must align with your specific environment and circumstances Problem Identification: Focus on understanding current organizational pains and creating alignment around which problems to solve Direction Setting: Break down larger goals into manageable increments while ensuring actions don't compete with each other Strategy Execution: Create space for teams to work on strategic initiatives while maintaining autonomy The Power of Bottom-Up Strategy Aleix challenges the traditional top-down approach to strategy development, advocating for a more inclusive process that brings together perspectives from all levels of the organization. This approach recognizes that teams and top-level management often have different visions that need to be reconciled for effective strategy implementation. "Strategy does not need to be designed top-down. Teams and top-level management have different visions, and we need to be able to bring those together." Implementation and Execution Success in engineering strategy requires more than just planning - it demands thoughtful execution and ongoing adaptation. Aleix emphasizes the importance of learning through action and starting with minimal effort initiatives to gain momentum. "By doing you learn, and doing is critical for strategy. Start with the least effort action you have in mind." Dual Innovation with Mentoring WORKS.  Podcast Guest Mentor About Arthur Fry. Art Fry is a retired chemical engineer and inventor from 3M. In 1974, Art used an only-slightly sticky adhesive invented by Dr. Spencer Silver to secure bookmarks in his church hymnals. When the bookmarks were removed, they left a sticky residue on the hymnals' pages, so Art tinkered with the chemical formula to make the adhesive even less sticky. It took several years for supervisors at 3M to see the value in a glue that did not stick well. Post-It® Notes were introduced in 1980, in 1985 sales topped $100M, and by 1998 annual sales of Post-It notes and other products based on Silver's adhesive generated a billion dollars in sales annually. Fry and Silver, being employees, never received any royalties, but in 1986 Fry was honored with the company's top technical title, corporate researcher. What a sheer delight to have this talented artist on my show. He is down to earth and shares his life story with me on New Starz as well as his talented music and songs with artists that he has performed on those tracks. A special thank you goes out to Diane of Entertainment Bureau for her support in making this interview happen. As a Southern Californian native Melvin Lee Davis began playing music, ‘the moment he came out of the womb', and felt he was destined to be a musician. Influenced by his surroundings, where music was constantly present, Davis began playing the violin aged four. By the time he was six, he had switched over to the saxophone. Like many successful musicians, Davis went on to play in the band at his church. When Davis was 16, a horn player from Buddy Miles's band saw him play at a local club, and recommended him to Miles for an audition. Miles flew Davis out to New York for the audition and hired him on the spot for his touring band. Davis was introduced to Soul Train's Don Cornelius through Ron “Have Mercy” Kersey, a staff producer at A&M Records. That led to him working as a staff bassist for Cornelius in 1978. Cornelius introduced Davis to a number of the top recording artists. As a result, Davis began writing music and performing with R&B singer O'Bryan from 1980 to 1987 through a record deal put in place by Cornelius, which included Davis writing the theme song, ‘Soul Train's A Comin' for Cornelius' weekly television show, Soul Train. In the second part of his interview, renowned agri-consultant Matt Ryan joins Emma-Louise Coffey on this week's Dairy Edge podcast to discuss practices that dairy farmers have adopted in an effort to achieve technical excellence. Traditionally, dairy farmers had extended housing periods where cows got out to grass in April or May and in 1993, Matt travelled to New Zealand which was an eye opening experience in terms of extended grazing through use of the spring rotation planner. Matt explains that the target at this time was to get out 1-2 weeks earlier and house 1-2 weeks later compared with previous years and in the early 90s, he estimates there was a £1 benefit per cow per day. When milk price moved to an A+B-C system, the focus turned to improving fat and protein constituents. Protein was particularly low owing to Shorthorn and British Friesian genetics and breeding focus for predicted fat and protein %, coupled with improved fertility and grassland management, means that the average Irish farmer has a current protein of 3.5%. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by a first-time guest on the podcast, Seth Jacobs. He is a Sr. Director of Experience Design at  AgileThought.   In this episode, Seth talks about technical excellence, from a design language and design system pattern to help the audience understand how these systems and patterns can be started and used, as well as the implications of evolving them over time.   Key Takeaways What is a Director of an Experience Practice? The role of an experienced practice director is to approach design from an architectural level, how the design teams work together, as well as contemplating what has been delivered. A Director of an Experience Practice supports teamwork.   Where are some of the places where technical excellence really pays off from an agility standpoint? Documentation has a huge role on the technical side, how they are taking them and how they are being shared among the team. The Storybook is a way of having the collection of components or controls that are used in an application, that becomes a visual library for everyone across the teams to use.   How is standardization balanced to avoid getting stuck? The design system is really the collection of several different things including a component library, and how all these components are arranged into patterns. The benefits of the design system are clear when all teams have a shared understanding of what patterns need to be implemented in which cases.   How is the feedback received from people who are working from the design patterns in order for them to continue to evolve? It depends on the size of the teams and how they are structured. Agile Thought counts with a core team that works with the designers and through the design thinking process, to then feed these processes on the other teams.   Why are the elements of a design system so valuable? How do they pay off? One of the biggest payoffs is for the users. It makes sure that consistency is being preserved. Seth talks about different design language tools.   How should organizations react to changes? Go back to the original user's journeys and the goals of the user to see what kind of potentially systemic effects that change could have. Remember, the most important thing is how much value you can bring to the business or the user.   Mentioned in this Episode: Learn more about Seth Jacobs   Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? Alberto Savoia, innovation expert, disrupter, and author of, The Right It: Why So Many Ideas Fail, and How to Make Yours Succeed, delivers a lively analysis of the many ways businesses fail, and succeed.  Savoia is a seasoned tech expert and business consultant who is in high demand at conferences and events. He is a lecturer and innovation consultant at Stanford University and was a key player at Google in the highly sought-after position of innovation agitator. During Savoia's early career as an engineer and eventually as an engineering executive and CTO he worked for innovation giants such as Sun Microsystems, SunLabs, and Google. Joining Sun Microsystems and Google as well back when they were just start-ups, Savoia's knowledge and leadership was instrumental in both companies' steady climb to success. Perhaps it can be said that Savoia's biggest asset is his ability to help businesses stimulate and foster groundbreaking innovation that yields high-impact product development.  Savoia talks about his background, starting with early success in the video game space that led to his tenure at Sun Microsystems and eventually Google. He discusses his start-ups and some of his successes and failures. And it was his first failure that inspired him to eventually write his popular business book, The Right It. After suffering a failed start-up Savoia returned to Google, but was still motivated to dig deeper, to help others understand their businesses and succeed in the market. Savoia details how he studied failure, talking to anyone and everyone who would discuss their business failures. From hard data to personal interviews, he amassed a wealth of information that led him to some clear observations about business success and failure. One primary point Savoia nailed down was that most business failures are not because of problems with personnel or execution, but because the company has launched the wrong product. It's simply the wrong idea. Savoia states that you want to be sure you are building the right it, before you build it right. Savoia gives a detailed analysis of how company owners and entrepreneurs can find their way in a crowded marketplace, and get an understanding of how their product might fair in the market—in the future—before they get there in terms of development and manufacturing. Savoia cites multiple examples of companies' successes and failures. He outlines the concept of pretotyping, which is ultra-rapid prototyping, essentially a way of envisioning your product before it is developed and built.  The technology expert provides examples of the many ways that companies can collect data. He delivers an interesting overview of his theories through an example of McDonalds, if they were to introduce a new product, such as spaghetti. He explains that a good way for McDonalds to pretotype is to simply put it on the menu, before it exists. When customers order it, they get a free lunch—no spaghetti, but everyone wins. McDonalds collects valuable data up front before investing in their spaghetti product, and the customer gets a free lunch. Savoia states, if there's a market, there is a way. Thus it is important to find out what the market wants. Savoia cites examples of companies that spent fortunes up front but then failed. Savoia stresses that you must have the right idea, of course, but the timing of delivery of a product is also critical. It's important to remember that you can fall in love with your idea and be blinded by that, ignoring the negative data, and heading full speed toward potential failure at launch. And finally, Savoia explains that he practices what he preaches for he actually pretotyped his book before writing the full version. And seeing his shortened version of the book takes off, he then knew that he needed to launch it fully.  Savoia is the recipient of numerous awards recognizing him as a true pioneer in the area of business innovation, such as: Wall Street Journal Technical Innovator Award (2005), InfoWorld Top 25 CTOs Award (2005), Software Development Magazine Jolt Award (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008), InfoWorld's Technology of the Year Award (2005, 2006), JavaOne Duke Award for Technical Excellence (2005), and many more.

This week on the Troubleshooting Agile podcast it's Agile Principle 9: "Continued attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility." The dark old days of big up-front design may send shivers down the spine, but the Lean Startup 'move fast and break things' approach of scrapping design altogether goes too far. Jeffrey and Squirrel ask how principle #9 can be used to find balance between the two. They also discuss how a shared body of knowledge is the key to making quicker and better decisions in regards to technical excellence and good design; and ways in which managers can expand this body of knowledge through Lunch and Learns and making bad judgements well. *** SHOWNOTES: -The 12 Agile Principles: http://agilemanifesto.org/principles.html -The Boy Scout Rule, from Uncle Bob: http://programmer.97things.oreilly.com/wiki/index.php/The_Boy_Scout_Rule -Uncle Bob himself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_C._Martin - Martin Fowler on Event Sourcing: https://martinfowler.com/eaaDev/EventSourcing.html *** We'd love to hear any thoughts, ideas or feedback you have regarding the show. The Best Way To Test For Zika Virus & Beyond: One Single, Very Inexpensive Test That Can Measure EVERYTHING - An Interview With Army Microbiologist & Virus Expert Dr. Charles Wick.

Ben Greenfield Life

Today's podcast guest is a guy who could save and be saving more lives than any guest I've ever had on the podcast. While working for the army as a microbiologist, he developed two extremely unique methods of microbe detection. The first is a universal and physical virus counter (IVDS). The second is a computer program that, in conjunction with Mass Spectometry, identifies the unique protein fragments (peptides) within a sample of anything and universally detects all the microbes in a sample (MSP) - from Ebola to influenza to Zika, West Nile Virus, AIDS and beyond, including known, unknown, and mutated viruses. He was the feature of the , which was about work he did in the bee population in 2010 to shed light on colony collapse disorder. But the promise of what he does goes beyond bees, and when it comes to health and fitness, in the right hands his Mass Spect Proteomics program could help scientists and physicians study the gut, infection and other elements of health. The need for a lot of lab work would be eliminated and human body clinicians would no longer be limited to parameters of particular panels, because they would now have access to one very inexpensive test that sees everything - EVERYTHING - and beats the pants off old-school methods of disease detection. The Integrated Virus Detection System (IVDS) he helped to develop is a fast-acting, highly portable, user-friendly, extremely accurate and efficient system for detecting the presence of, screening, identifying, and characterizing viruses. Let's say, for example, you get bit by a mosquito (this analogy is inspired by the newspaper clip below that I was just reading this morning). Over several days, you feel increasingly worse and worse. What if, using your own saliva or other body fluid, you could immediately test in the comfort of your own home to see if you had Zika, West Nile, or some other microbe-related issue? That's possible. My guest's name is Dr. Charles Wick, and he is based out of a small tech firm in Montana that is working to make IVDS laptop sized units to be used use in mobile applications like airports, drugstores, homes, etc. to help quickly and accurately diagnose the flu and other bugs, along with developing technologies to help bee keepers manage their hives to save insects like bees and beetles. Dr. Wick is a retired senior scientist from the US Army Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) where he served both as a manager and research physical scientist and has made significant contributions to forensic science. Although his 40+ year professional career has spanned both the public sector and the military, his better-known work in the area of forensic science has occurred in concert with the Department of Defense (DOD). After earning four degrees from the University of Washington, Dr. Wick worked in the private sector for twelve years, leading to a patent, numerous publications, and international recognition among his colleagues. In 1983, Dr. Wick joined the Vulnerability/Lethality Division of the United States Army Ballistic Research Laboratory, where he quickly achieved recognition as a manager and principal investigator. It was at this point that he made one of his first major contributions to forensic science and to the field of antiterrorism; his team was the first to utilize current technology to model sub-lethal chemical, biological, and nuclear agents. This achievement was beneficial to all areas of the Department of Defense, as well as to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and gained Wick international acclaim as an authority on individual performance for operations conducted on a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) battlefield. During his career in the United States Army, Wick rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Chemical Corps. He served as a Unit Commander for several rotations, a staff officer for six years (he was an Division Chemical Staff Officer for two rotations), Deputy Program Director Biological Defense Systems, and retired from the position of Commander of the 485th Chemical Battalion in April of 1999. Dr. Wick continued to work for the DOD as a civilian at ECBC. Two notable achievements, and one which earned him the Department of the Army Research and Development Award for Technical Excellence and a Federal Laboratory Consortium Technology Transfer Award in 2002, include his involvement in the invention of the Integrated Virus Detection System (IVDS), a fast-acting, highly portable, user-friendly, extremely accurate and efficient system for detecting the presence of, screening, identifying, and characterizing viruses. The IVDS can detect and identify the full spectrum of known, unknown, and mutated viruses, from AIDS to foot and mouth disease, to West Nile Virus, and beyond. This system is compact, portable, and does not rely upon elaborate chemistry. The second, and equally award winning, was his leadership in the invention of the method for detecting and identifying microbes using Mass Spectrometry Proteomics. Each of these projects represent determined ten year efforts and are novel in their approaches to the detection and classification of microbes from complex matrices. Both topics are the subjects of two books published by CRC Press. Throughout his career, Wick has made lasting and important contributions to forensic science and to the field of antiterrorism. Dr. Wick holds several U.S. Patents in the area of microbe detection and classification. He has written more than forty-five civilian and military publications and has received myriad awards and citations, including the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Medal, the Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service Award, two United States Army Achievement Medals for Civilian Service, the Commander's Award for Civilian Service, the Technical Cooperation Achievement Award and twenty-five other decorations and awards for military and community service. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What bees disappearing has to do with the Zika virus...[15:38] -Why colony collapse disorder in bees is happening (and whether cell phones are to blame)...[24:12 & 28:20] -Why it's actually a pretty big deal for your health if bees die off...[31:00, 32:40 & 38:00] -What can be done now to keep bees from disappearing...[34:00 & 51:15] -How the biological testing equipment Charles developed is extremely unique, and why older detection methods are flawed...[18:30, 37:50 & 46:25] -Ways this technology can be used to quickly find out if you have things like MRSA, Lyme, influenza or some kind of underlying chronic infection...[37:10 & 44:40] -How the smartphone of the future could be used to detect virtually any microbial condition...[53:35] -And much more... People often take it for granted that developers are paying attention to their craft. "Everyone assumes quality is in there," says Mike Rieser, Director of Software Development at Fenway Group. But, as he put it off camera, "technical excellence isn't something you just sprinkle on." Instead, technical excellence is foundational, not something you just add on in the end like some kind of condiment. Allison Pollard, Principal Consultant at Improving, adds that often people think they'll make "improvements" and clean up the code later. "The data becomes apparent... How many defects are escaping with every release? How many defects are getting resolved with every release?" Mike accentuates that, with Agile software development, zero-defect code is a possibility and, often, the general case. The Post-it® Note is one of the best known of all 3M products. It is used by loyal customers all over the world, many of whom declare that they can't imagine how they ever got along before Post-it® Notes were invented. It's equally difficult to imagine a time when 3M was struggling to find a use for the repositionable adhesive that makes Post-it® Notes so versatile. But that was precisely the case back in the early 1970s, before a team of tenacious innovators at 3M created the product that permanently changed the way we communicate. In a classic case of innovative serendipity, 3M research scientist Dr. Spence Silver found something quite remarkably different from what he was originally looking for. But it wasn't until Art Fry, a new product development researcher, discovered the ultimate product niche for this innovation. Hear how Art's intense curiosity and penchant for practical solutions helped lead him to the Post-it® Note concept, the skeptics he faced within 3M, and the market research involved. In 1981, one year after its introduction, Post-it Notes were named the company's Outstanding New Product. Fry was named a 3M corporate scientist in 1986. Now semi-retired, Fry looks back on the many innovative products-such as the Post-it® Pop-up Note Dispenser and the Post-it® Flag-that have followed upon the original Post-it® Note. Art holds 3M′s top technical title, corporate scientist. He has a unique perspective born of almost 40 years of experience developing new products for the 3M Company. A Midwesterner with both rural and urban roots, Art began working for 3M part-time in 1953, while still a University of Minnesota Chemical Engineering student. His career was devoted almost entirely to new product development –– using the stream of leading-edge materials and technologies generated by 3M research, to create products to solve real customer problems, and to help build businesses around them. Art has made several contributions to 3M′ new product world, but the most significant was the invention of the Post-it® Note. The invention of the Post-it® Note, introduced in the United States in 1980 and in Europe in 1981, earned a number of 3M internal honors. Art received the highest form of peer recognition by being elected to 3M′s Carlton Society. He was also on the team for two Golden Step Awards and was elected to 3M's Circle of Technical Excellence. Post-it® Notes and Microreplication Technologies were cited when 3M received the National Medal of Technology in 1996. Art has also received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota, the Premio Smau Industrial Design Award from the Italian Office Design Association and was recently voted by Esquire Magazine as one of the best 100 people in the world. Semi-retired, Art still keeps his hand in technology, networking and mentoring. He's become a spokesman both inside and outside of 3M on innovation and the company's unique culture
