Unions have been a significant force for change in many industries, and in recent years even in healthcare. They can implement policies - better pay, benefits, and working conditions, and push for more transparency and accountability. With unions, employees can make their voices heard and if successful, it could improve the healthcare system as a whole. In this episode, we talk to Hannah Porter MD, a 2nd-year Dermatology Resident at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She and her team organized the UVMC residents and fellows as the latest union shop for the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU. Her story progresses from leadership's disrespect and lack of transparency on issues as simple as PPE to the face-to-face conversation required to obtain a final tally of 209 for the union and 59 against. It even includes Union Busting Consultants making $2500/day to lobby the Residency Program Directors into threatening withdrawal of funding for attending conferences, and a cameo from none other than Senator Bernie Sanders. After a year, we'll follow up with Dr. Porter to see if they've successfully negotiated better pay and if work hour restrictions have been enforced. “I know that there are several ways to approach how we can fix this healthcare system, and this is one of the ways from my perspective.” Hannah Porter MD MBA Episode Highlights: (01:39) How it all started and recognizing the need for a union (7:27) Spreading the word to colleagues and Senator Bernie Sanders' participation (12:37) The biggest benefit of having a union shop (16:48) Change in the treatment by senior leaders after being unionized (21:37) The first negotiation's top priority change (25:18) Bringing in the anti-union consultants Connect with Dr. Hannah Porter: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hannahjchang/ Resources: Article on the Union Vote https://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/resident-physicians-at-the-uvm-medical-center-vote-to-form-union/Content?oid=35346837 Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU https://www.cirseiu.org/ Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD: https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback. Engaging with creativity is a form of self-care that can benefit both a caregiver and a care recipient in many ways. In 2015, psychologist and art therapist Dr. Cathy Malchiodi cited multiple studies confirming that being creative can increase positive emotions, lessen depressive symptoms, reduce stress, decrease anxiety, and even improve immune system functioning. A 2016 study in The Journal of Positive Psychology supported these earlier findings, concluding that spending time on creative goals during a day is associated with higher activated positive affect (PA) on that day. Positive affect is the extent to which people experience positive moods, such as joy, happiness, and optimism. Higher positive effects lower stress and expand our perspective so that we notice more possibilities in our lives. In today's episode, Bill chats with Faye Melling, a caregiver for her adult daughter. Faye talks about how being creative has helped her deal with some of the ups and downs in her caregiving journey. She also shares how her daughter is using artistic expression as a way to deal with some of the challenges she's experiencing due to her condition. Today, we are taking the first step on our journey into breathing for voice work. We will explore how to improve unnecessary patterns in our breathing and why we tend to use more breath than we need. This episode will help you become more aware of the intuitive nature of inhalation, and the importance of breathing rhythm in a resting position. What You Will Learn In This Episode: - The benefits of proper breathing - The most common breathing issues in voice work - A simple exercise to identify our breathing patterns - The scientific understanding of our breathing - The importance of the in-breath for getting a free, responsive, and supportive breath for voice work When we have a better understanding of how breathing works, it impacts not only our voice work performance, but also our mental and overall health. Although breathing is an automatic function of our bodies, having an awareness of our breathing patterns will enhance our voicing performance. Happy New Year! Our first episode of 2021 is with a young GP and rising star Dr Imogen Staveley.Imogen is newly qualified, having only been a GP for 6 years- but what she has achieved in that time is quite remarkable. She is a GP appraiser, Deputy Chair of Warwickshire North CCG, and a clinical lead in the Transforming Primary Care team of The Healthy London Partnership. She also recently graduated with an MBA from Warwick Business School (with distinction!). Before this, she completed a 'Darzi' leadership fellowship at UCLPartners. Aspiring GP leaders at Next Gen events often ask, amongst other things: how to find new leadership opportunities, what makes a good mentor and how to get one, and how to grapple with that sense of "imposter syndrome" that can affect us all too often early on in our leadership journeys. This podcast is for anyone who'd like some honest answers to those pertinent questions. I was delighted when Imogen agreed to come on the podcast, because I've always admired her drive, her confidence in stretching herself, her ability to plan ahead, her honesty in getting things wrong, and her commitment to investing in herself and to others coming up behind her.*Highlights:Start of her leadership journey and current roles (5 mins)How she has planned her career (9.5 mins)Doing an MBA (11 mins)The importance of coaching and mentoring, and how to find one (13 mins)Not getting opportunities (19 mins)Being a new mum (21 mins)Navigating the return to work after maternity leave (23 mins)Being a part time portfolio GP (30 mins)Future career plans (33 mins)Final 3 questions- an article, a role model, and top tips (35 mins)*Resources:Article recommendation: What is value in healthcare?*Social media:@ImogenStaveley@NextGGP/@nishmanek*Subscribe to the Next Gen GP monthly bulletin to keep in the loop about future webinars, podcast episodes, and our virtual programmes:bit.ly/NGGPbulletin Hosted on Acast. Today I'm speaking with our expert about this week's topic. It's practical. It hits all the hard places, and offers tips and solutions to help us move to the next level. Episode Summary In this episode of Ask the Expert, Dr. Thomas Lickona takes us through the first 5 of the 10 emotional dangers of premarital sex. He also shares anecdotes and research findings which confirm that these emotional dangers can be quite detrimental. Dr. Lickona explains that sexual purity frees us from emotional anxieties. Key Takeaways Engaging in sexual purity and moral conduct will result in improved familial, peer and marital relationships and in improved grades/academics (9:01) Sex has consequences which may hit us immediately or after an extended period (12:25) The guilt of hooking up can stay with us for decades (16:31) Both men and women experience emotional hurts because of premature sex (19:21) Guilt may drive you to have an abortion (24:27) Pornography results from the loss of self control and is really treating people as if they're less than persons (34:35) Top Quotes Our entire person, our mind, our body, our feelings are involved (in sex). And that's why sexual intimacy has potentially powerful emotional consequences (7:26) We can make a new beginning. We can walk down a different path. We have the strength to do that we can call upon the grace of God (11:15) We really do need to have God as a partner in living a life of sexual integrity, a life of sexual self control (11:44) We have an emotional freedom from anxieties (worry about pregnancy and disease) if we are not engaging in behavior outside of the relationship of marriage (15:10) Your conscience can bother you a lot if you treat sex as a casual thing (21:47) If a guy is doing pornography there's a problem and you either want him to break off, get help and the stop the behavior or find yourself somebody else because it's a big danger signal in a relationship (34:06) Resources Article: 10 Emotional Dangers of Premature Sexual Involvement Article: The Real Deal About Pornography Article: The Intrinsic Meaning of Sex Book: Sex, Love and You: Making the Right Decision Stay Connected Thanks for listening to this episode. How is living in a post-truth culture affecting our kids? Sean McDowell and J. Warner Wallace remind us that many of our youth today navigate the world through their feelings. Our culture assumes that Christianity is wrong, bad, and harmful. How then do we engage our kids with the truth of Scripture? McDowell and Wallace suggest some practical ways parents can interact with their kids around cultural issues, movies, and music using a biblical worldview. Today you’re being reminded to get to know yourself. Know yourself so deeply and intimately that you have absolute confidence in who you are and what you want from life. Know yourself so well that you know what’s yours and what’s not, particularly in relation to beliefs and fears. Know yourself so well that you can create a life that honours the truth of who you are. Understand what’s important to you, what lights you up and what you’re passionate about. Throughout life you’ll continue to learn more about yourself. Challenges help you to understand what’s important to you, as they show you what you’re willing to overcome and what you’ll give up on. Successes show you what you’re good at, or at least what challenges you’ll persist with. Each event in life helps you to understand more about yourself and reveal a truer version of you. As more of your true self is revealed, the more you can own your power as you know what actions and values align with who you are. You do not need for other people to understand your truth. You do not need their validation, permission or acceptance for you to honour yourself. Once you understand yourself better you can make choices that support your values, feelings and energy, and you’re less influenced by the demands and expectations of outside influences. In this very moment, just pause, and take a breath. As you commit to getting to know yourself better. Today’s SHEro Action: Today’s SHEro action is to take the time to get really clear on who you are, what’s important to you and what you stand for. Who would you be if you lived a life that honoured what’s important to you, rather than focussing on what you think you should do or what’s expected of you? What would you start doing and what would you stop doing? Who are you when no-one’s looking? Pause, and take a breath. As you prioritise getting to know yourself better. Biblical encouragement isn’t focused on complementing someone’s haircut or telling them how good their homemade salsa tastes. That kind of encouragement is important, but the encouragement the Scriptures refer to is explicitly Christian encouragement. Encouragement is shared with the hopes that it will lift someone’s heart toward the Lord (Col. 4:8). It points out evidences of grace in another’s life to help them see that God is using them. It points a person to God’s promises that assures them that all they face is under his control. The New Testament reveals that encouragement was a regular part of the early church’s life together (Acts 13:15, 16:40, 18:27, 20:1-2, 27:36). They shared Scripture-saturated words with each other to spur one another on in faith (Acts 14:22), hope (Rom. 15:4), unity (Rom. 15:5; Col. 2:2), joy (Acts 15:31), strength (Acts 15:32), fruitfulness (Heb. 10:24-25), faithfulness (1 Thess. 2:12), perseverance (Heb. 10:25), and the certainty of Christ’s return (1 Thess. 4:18). Encouragement was and is an essential way of extending grace to each other." - 9 Marks article: https://www.9marks.org/article/encourage-one-another-giving-grace-with-your-words/ Scripture used today: We are told to be encouragers: 1 Thess 5:11 "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." Being an encourager takes time and investment: Hebrews 10:23- 25 "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." Encouragement comes largely from our mouths and how we communicate with those around us: Ephesians 4:29 "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." We are to be there in good times and bad: Galatians 6:2 "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." Do it all in patience and love: 1 Thess 5:14 "And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all." 1 Peter 4:8-10 "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace"

Today, we speak with Ilaina Rabbat (co-founder of Amani Institute) on burnout in social entrepreneurs--why it happens, what can be done to protect yourself from it, signs it's happening, safety measure to put in place--which is so critically important when you're doing this sort of work. She recently published a thesis on how to thrive in the social sector. On this episode you'll learn: Ilaina focuses on thriving rather than surviving/burnout, although burnout is not usually a word used by social entrepreneurs since it's almost seen as a bad word; saying that you're burnt out wasn't part of the dialogue originally. She gives an example of experiencing burnout herself, opening up an Ashoka office in El Salvador, a new country for her with no support network. Inside Armani institute, a main topic included in their curriculum, “inner journey of a changemaker,” is to help intrapreneurs understand who they are, what they want, and how to sustain themselves since normal university curriculum never talks about this, and it was their most popular curriculum topic. Sacrifice, and touching upon Daniela Papi-Thornton's thesis on tackling heropreneurship. Signs that Ilaina felt when she first started to get burnout: When you feel like you don't want to keep doing what you're doing (e.g. intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation), Your body (ie. headaches, back pain, fatigue, etc.), and concerns from loved ones. Binary trap that entrepreneurs get into a lot, like should I run my social venture or should I spend time with my family, e.g. A or B rather than A and B. It's a mental trap that entrepreneurs get into a lot. Social entrepreneurs cannot do everything so they should narrow down their responsibility and their impact to make it limited, tangible, and achievable; otherwise you will burn out. Ilaina discusses five out of ten variables (or common themes) across groups of social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs: Sacrifice (want to versus have to), Work centrality (ability to not think in a binary way), Responsibility (everyone thinks they are responsible to make this world a better place), Privilege (either in a grateful way or guilty way), and Empathy (remaining centered and avoiding compassion fatigue). Actionable things to do in order to move from surviving to thriving: Self awareness (feel more connected to yourself) and meditation helps with this, and in slowing down burnout. Relationships (spending time with people that love you; but quality over quantity). Intrinsic motivation (remember why you're doing what you do). Who is high risk to burnout? Social entrepreneurs in the middle of their career. When you first start, you still have a lot of passion and energy. The same for those who have been working for 15 to 20 years because of the wisdom they have gained. But the people in between, like the first 5 to 10 years in a social venture, the passion and excitement is starting to go out, and the wisdom gained later isn't there yet. Radical acceptance is the ultimate form of non-resistance. When we resist our circumstances and suffer because we long for things or people to be other than they are, we are miserable. Radical acceptance means loving whatever you're experiencing whether you like it out not. It also means accepting and forgiving other people and yourself when a mistake is made or a personality flaw gets in the way. In our final episode on Abundance Mindset, explore how to be more OK with the moment and suffer less from other people's and your own shortcomings. We all have questions when it comes to planning for our future and how to implement the best plan of action when it comes to setting a legal plan in place. Taralyn’s morning routines. Meet Taralyn! My cohost for Find the Magic! She is sharing her morning routines in this insightful episode. Hone your perfect morning routine! We are breaking down our morning routines and tools to make them happen. Book : https://amzn.to/2RwRmMp 1. My meditation I invite you to try for 30 days: 1. Gratitude Breaths: 3 super deep breaths, thinking of one thing you are grateful for per breath, 2. Loving kindness meditation: Picture someone you love in front of you, and take a deep breath, and imagine all of the cells in your body lighting up with love and awesome energy. Then, take a super deep breath in and exhale that love out to your whole home or building. Do that same thing with your city, state, country, earth, and universe (imagining the love coming back to you on each inhale and sending it out on the exhale). After you’ve done at least one breath for each of those places, just end with that love coming back to you and energizing you. 3. Mantra Meditation: take 5-10 deep breaths, repeating the word ONE in your mind. When your mind wanders, that’s great! Just come back to the word ONE and take a few more breaths. 2. Exercise Tip: 7 Minute Workout App: it’s free and awesome if you want a quick workout:) 3. 6 minute miracle morning, which anyone can do and it will transform your life even if you don’t want to spend more time! 1. Sit down with a journal, book, and timer. Spend one minute on each of the following six SAVERS: Silence, Affirmations, Visualization, Exercise, and Scribing. 4. Document your state! Write down your current ratings on a scale of 1-10 of Balance (1 being totally unbalanced and 10 being perfectly balanced) and Contentment: (1 being not content with yourself or any aspect of life and 10 being perfectly content with yourself and your life). Do this now, and again at the end of 30 days of implementing a morning habit. See if there is a difference:)! I did some research on this new Opportunity Fund Zone tax benefits. Below are some notes and ideas.Note: I’m not a CPA or attorney just putting it out there to help inspire some ideas. An Opportunity zone (OZ) is a tax-favored investment for people with capital gains.6-pages in the tax document in the new 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs ActGoal to encourage long-term investments in low-income communities across the US.Every major city has some OZ.Most of Detroit is an OZ plus large portions of Baltimore.Allows investors to sell their appreciated assets and invest their realized capital gains into one or more designated OZ.EVEN STOCKS! Non-like kind assets are OK!After your selling your appreciated asset you have 180-days.The longer you hold the more benefit you get (up to 10 years).1) Defer your original capital gain tax obligations until 2026 or until you sell your OZ investment.2) Discount of 10% or 15% on the taxable amount of your original gains. If you hold more than 5 years your original cap gains decrease 10%3) If you hold 10 years or more. You will pay NO capital gains tax on any appreciation. You can self-certify so you do not need an intermediary like in 1031 exchanges. No investment minimum. There are some items that get a little unclear… where you should really consult your CPA.Check out the IRS opportunity comes frequently asked questions page and additional resources below.Resources to Google: community development financial institutions fund, CDFI Fund map.Note: Spending $100 dollars to save $20 dollars is not a wise idea. Just like buying a rental next to Grandma’s house because your travel there. A lot of specifics are still being played out but something intriguing to augment an already good investment.Other ideas: Look at the OZ map and try to find the smaller slivers of OZ. This is called “buying on the line” whereas areas improve on the edge of development you greatly benefit.I would ask your CPA if they know about these opportunity fund zones. If they don’t you might need a new CPA. If you are a current Hui Deal Pipeline Club member I would be more than happy to refer you to some people and then you can see if you work well together. There is a lot of rumors floating around how this tax will be implemented later this year. One of these rumors suggests that we might not qualify for the Opportunity Zone Fund. See second to the last page of the attached where they state that we have to do improvements that is the same as the basis in order to qualify.Resources: Article on Opportunity Fund Zones – https://drive.google.com/open?id=1F8wDToyb9olvq52U9LRMD8cBrJILm8q_ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
There are so many things I want to scream out of rage and disillusionment right now. But that is not what is most productive. What is most productive is being an intentional part of the solution. The solution is to dismantle rape culture. And it starts HERE. It starts with how we are raising our boys. Now. Today. It starts with the conversations you’re having with your sons and the behavior you’re modeling. Is it a big undertaking? Yes. Can we do it? Yes. In this episode, I explain the exact (science/research based) parenting my husband and I are committed to because we are committed to not raising a rapist. If I had a daughter, I would want to know that every boy, young man, and the older man she was in contact with understood and valued these guiding principles. Summary Brian Mayer discusses the golden ratio in marriage with regard to positive versus negative interactions. This is especially critical in subsequent marriages when partners tend to be on high alert looking for the negative. Learn practical tips for implementing more positive interactions into your relationship to divorce proof the marriage. We hope you enjoy today's message. For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies Today's episode is all the Golden Ratio in Marriage. Before I get into that, though I want to talk a little about the Golden Ratio when it comes to math. Not sure who decided this, but the Golden Ratio in a line occurs when you divide the line into two pieces such that the longest piece divided by the shortest piece is the same ratio as the longest piece divided by the entire line. There are Golden Ratios in all walks of life. In Major League baseball, hitting .400 which means 4 hits for every 10 times to bat is considered the Holy Grail. In the Senate, in order to filibuster proof a bill, there needs to be 60% support. In food, the recipes need the right balance of ingredients in order to make a tasty dish. I remember a friend who made lemon bars in a Home Economics class, by putting a cup of salt rather than a cup of sugar in the mix. Needless to say that was the worst lemon bar I had ever tasted. There is also a Golden Ratio in Marriage and Relationships. This involves the number of positive things that you do versus the negative things you do to and toward your partner. John Gottman who has studied couples for more than forty years and is well known for his ability to predict divorce by watching just small portions of a couples interactions, states that there must be at least 5 positive interactions for every 1 negative to be happy and healthy. Gottman states that more than 5 is helpful. If a couple is at 2 or 3 to 1 then they are operating as roommates. If the ratio is 1:1 then the couple is heading for divorce. Why the need for some many more positive interactions? Let's talk brain science. Elizabeth Kensinger who is a university professor wrote a fantastic article that is linked below in the Resources sections. She quoted research that showed when people are asked to recall details from negative versus positive events, that more details can be recalled when the event is negative. She also discusses how negative events seemed to be more well preserved over a lifetime in our brains. So this is why positive interactions with your partner are critical! What types of positive interactions can be counted? Really anything can be large or small. It doesn't always have to be a diamond ring or a trip to Europe. It can be something as simple as an encouraging text for an upcoming stressful meeting, buying a bag of your partner's favorite candy, doing the laundry if that is typically not your chore. You might come home an hour early one day and spend it with your partner. When you pass each other in the hallway at home reach for a hug and a kiss. The goal is to pile up the positive interactions so that the love tanks gets filled. The more positive in the tank the less impact that a negative has. If you are at a loss for what to do I would encourage you to pick up a copy of a book called The Love Dare which talks about taking a 40 day challenge to practice unconditional love. Additional, a book called The Respect Dare is more specifically geared toward women and helping them actively create a deeper connection with husband. Vicki from LegitChics shares her raw journey from food lover to child protector. Plus one of the most common foods around that can actually help regulate estrogen levels What you will learn about one food lover's journey that led her to protect children and families the most common food around that can actually help regulate estrogen levels, help with migraines and help eliminate PMS At the end of this episode I'll share with you one of the cheapest foods you can buy that can help transform your health if you're a food lover too, and Marilyn Monroe ate this food every day. OK that was a huge hint! Have you got any idea what food it is? You'll find out. On with the story This story comes to us from Vicki Marie, who is an incredible woman. Vicki is the founder of LegitChics.com where she shares other women's stories of their triumphs, survival, struggles, trauma, loss and grief, and what we all can learn from their experiences. In addition to founding LegitChics.com and being what she calls a Bad Ass Solopreneur, Vicki is also a Women's Empowerment & Resiliency Coach, a Family Safety & Family Enrichment Coach, a Crime Victim Advocate, a Social Worker, an Educator and a Survivor. So here's Vicki's story, which I'm going to share with you in her own words. Vicki's story: from food lover to child protector "I love food. I mean really love it. Let me put it this way - when my sister and I were having the team Edward vs. team Jacob debate (like all sisters do right!) - I went team Jacob all the way. I told her I could never give up food - especially Mexican food! To give up chips and salsa, enchiladas, tacos ... no fucking way! She laughed and tried to convince me to be on team Edward by saying, "You could always just eat a Mexican!" Oh, my God we laughed so hard I almost peed myself. But seriously - give up food? Come on." A lifelong struggle "My whole life I have struggled with my extra chub. I think my earliest memories of feeling self-conscious started in junior high - like most of us do at that age. "One time while making a sandwich my step grandmother made a comment about how much Miracle Whip I was putting on my ham and cheese sandwich and how that was going to go straight to my hips. "My dad commented on how wide my butt was getting. "Better yet was the time we got weighed in for PE in front of the whole class and one of the guys (yes, I remember you) held up a sign with my weight for the whole class to see. "In 8th grade I was fully grown and bigger than the awkward scrawny guys, and weighing in at 154 I was mortified. I maintained that weight all through High School and even following the birth of my daughter. But that wasn't good enough "I prayed and prayed God would just help me lose 20 pounds - that's all I asked for. Funny how living with extreme abuse by my mother and I was more worried about that 20 pounds than anything else. "I remember in High School a guy told me I was really pretty and all but that I'd get more boyfriends if I wasn't fat. I was devastated. What I'd give to be back to 154 lbs now. Looking back, I was perfect at that weight and size. I was in size 7 and 9s back then. I haven't seen that weight since my hysterectomy in 2003. "Following the hysterectomy, I gained 100 pounds within the first year and have been a size 22 or 3X consistency. Eating anything and everything "Since then it seems no matter what I do that weight will not budge. If I eat everything in sight or I diet like a crazy person it just stays the same. "I've tried to convince myself that people don't treat me any differently, that my kids (all 5 of them) don't love me any less, and to know me is to love me. But, even with my public confidence and my outwardly "I don't give a shit" attitude - deep down I care. "I eat when I'm happy, I eat when I'm sad, I eat when I'm stressed, I eat when I'm anxious, I eat when I want to set a sex offender on fire. You name the emotion and I'll eat it. "Do I have bad eating habits? Sure. Do I starve myself all day just due to the simple fact I didn't have time to eat then get home after work and eat everything that isn't nailed down because I'm so hungry? Yep. And, do I get fast food or a quick snack of beef jerky and chips at that gas station when I'm out with Law Enforcement investigating child abuse? Hell yes. "I have horrible habits. I know that. But like I said earlier, it doesn't seem to matter what I do - I can eat till I drop or diet and eat healthy and it doesn't matter. The weight stays the same. Never giving up "However, I'm trying again. It's been two weeks of salads, fat-free dressing, chicken breast, cucumbers as chips with my homemade killer salsa. That's actually really good by the way. But, I'm already missing and craving BBQ, tacos, steaks, loaded baked potatoes, cheese! Your killin' me smalls! I'm just keepin' it real. Helping people now "As a mom of 5 children, 28 years and counting parenting experience (you learn as you go believe me), a previous foster parent and Child Protection Social Worker and Investigator for the past 11 years, currently a Crime Victim Advocate and Women's Empowerment, Resiliency & Life Coach and a Family Safety & Family Enrichment Coach, I've worked with and helped hundreds and hundreds of women, children, and families in crisis. "I work with victims of crime, victims of physical and sexual abuse and assault, Domestic Violence, people who are struggling with substance use and abuse, mental health, trauma, families who experience the loss of a child or death of a loved one, as well as victims of child abuse and neglect. "I help families stay safe. "If you need help in any of those areas - I've got you covered. But, if you need help with weight like I do - get help from someone who is an expert in this field. "Barbara, I'm all yours girl! Whatcha got? Vicki Marie" Some ideas for Vicki and other food lovers (and you, if any of this sounds familiar) First of all, Vicki thank you SO much for sharing your story with us. I mean, what an incredible journey. I find it very inspiring - and I'm sure anyone listening does too. You've been able to take your experience of abuse and have the strength and courage to not only contribute to but also to build resources and a coaching practice to help others in similar situations. I just think that's incredible. You're one strong woman. Now you've asked me for a food tip, and yup, I've got a great one for you. You said that weightloss after your hysterectomy is a challenge, and I've definitely got some tips for you. Before I share them though, I just want to say for those of you listening that any advice I give here is based on my own personal experience. Each listener is responsible for his or her own health. I take no responsibility for anything you decide to do or not do as a result of what I say. So if you're in any doubt or you require medical advice in your particular situation, please contact the appropriate health professional. First some non-food tips OK. The first thing I'd say Vicki would be to make sure that you don't have an undiagnosed thyroid problem. I don't know if you've seen a doctor for that, but if you haven't, that might be a good place to start. The second thing I'd say has to do with my own experience in the area of abuse and weight issues. Sometimes extra weight can be our unconscious way of protecting ourselves. It sounds like you deal with really tough situations every day, so I wonder if it's possible that the extra weight helps you protect yourself unconsciously on some level. I say that because I used to have that problem myself, and also not all women gain weight after a hysterectomy. So there could be another reason. I'm not a therapist. I'm not a coach. I'm just a fellow survivor with a long experience of therapy, personal development and spiritual practices. And that's what came to my mind, so I wanted to share it in case it helps someone. The food tips First, what to avoid, especially for estrogen levels Now in terms of the food that can help you, first I want to tell you one food to avoid, OK? And that food is soy. The reason you want to avoid soy is because it has phytoestrogens that mimic estrogen in the body, which play havoc with your hormone balance. This is true not only for women, but for men and children as well. That's why you see men who aren't that overweight with man boobs. I mean, that's an estrogen thing. It's kind of scary, and I could talk for the entire podcast about why estrogen levels are important to control and how you can do that, but I won't. So, if you're drinking soya milk for example, please stop! Better choices for plant-based milks are any nut milk, or hemp, or rice milk, or coconut milk. Anything but soy. What to add into your diet Right, now here's a food for you to add into your diet Vicki. I don't know if you eat it or not, but hopefully you'll start now! It's a super common food that actually helps detox and eliminate excess estrogen. Apparently Marilyn Monroe ate this food every day. She also smoked and drank a lot, but she ate this one superfood every day. The best part is that this food doesn't come in a fancy package as a dried superfood powder that costs the earth. It's actually one of the cheapest foods you can get. You're gonna be surprised. Are you ready? The food is...carrot! Did you guess it? If you did let me know, OK? So why carrots? Raw carrots actually have a particular fiber that absorbs excess estrogen and helps get it out of the body. Isn't that cool? So if you know anyone suffering from PMS, including migraines, ask them to eat one raw carrot each day and see what happens. I'm not making this up. In the shownotes for this episode I'll link to an article by Dr Ray Peat where he explains more about estrogen levels and how he found that his migraines disappeared by eating one raw carrot a day. I'll also link to another article that explains the link between raw carrots and estrogen. Best way to eat your carrots Now how do you eat your one carrot a day? Well, it has to be raw. And for best results, you want to eat it in between meals, so just pick one up and munch on it. The best carrots are large, organic carrots. Just avoid any pre-peeled carrots, because the peel on the carrot helps protect it from picking up bacteria, and if they're organic, you don't have to peel them. You can just wash them to remove any excess dirt. And if you want to up your intake of carrots with your meals as well, try dipping them into my Spinach Dip, or shredding them to add to soups and salads. You'll find the Spinach Dip recipe in my 5-Minute Soups & Sides recipe ebook and I'll link to that in the show notes. Overview: Sean K. Murphy has an accomplished career in a variety of industries, including software engineering, project management and business development. In this episode we talk about leadership, resilience and reliability from an entrepreneurial standpoint. I am firmly convinced that all leaders need to understand something about entrepreneurism and how entrepreneurial skills may help leaders to develop more resilient organizations. Sean has some outstanding advice for leaders, regardless of their industry. Sean’s Biography: Sean Murphy has worked in a variety of roles in the last twenty-five years: software engineer, engineering manager, project manager, business development, product marketing, and customer support. Companies he has worked directly for include Cisco Systems, 3Com, AMD, MMC Networks, and VLSI Technology. He has a BS in Mathematical Sciences and an MS in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford. Show Notes: Changes make things obsolete so organizations need room to experiment in environments that are safe to fail in. A degree if failure has to be tolerated if organizations want to seek improvement and build resiliency. Organizations need to plan for iteration. Organizations should consider a stream of small failures and include resilience and recovery plans for overlapping repair. Startup organizations should have 2-3 backup plans ready. Leaders need to review and critique their own performance in order to improve. They also need to be willing to say, “I don’t know.” Sign up for our Newsletter here, or go to: www.v-speedsafety.com/email-subscription Time-Stamped Show Notes 0:35-Randy introduces Sean Murphy and describes who he is, including reading his biography. 3:30- Randy asks Sean, “Okay, we’ve heard your formal bio, but tell us what makes you tick, what motivates you, what inspires you, or generally why you do what you do?” 8:02-Randy and Sean discuss the concept of going all in with one course of action and having no backup options, and the potential dangers of not having backup plans. 18:00-Randy asks Sean about some of the reasons for business failure, such as giving up too early or scaling too quickly and Sean provides his perspective. 25:29-Randy asks Sean about an “Aha moment” that shaped his outlook on business and leadership. Sean describes the book The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Gallwey. 32:15-Randy describes Crew Resource Management training and the benefits. 33:40-Randy asks Sean, “What area(s) in leadership or organization development do you think needs disruption and why?” Resources: Article about avoiding backup plans: http://www.inc.com/deborah-petersen/elizabeth-holmes-avoid-backup-plans.html Book Recommendations: Secrets of Consulting by Gerald Weinberg, The E-Myth by Michael Gerber, and Effectual Entrepreneurship by Sara Sarasvathy Contact: Web: www.skmurphy.com (includes blog and contact info)
Hey there Word Nerds! This is our last solo show before the Storytelling Superpower Summit in June. We just rolled out the Storytelling Superpower Quiz and we’ll be having a series of podcasts in June that dig deeper into the storytelling superpower archetypes. We’re focusing on figuring out what type of character really drives you so that you can dive in and get the most out of the story you decide to tell, both for your readers and for you as a writer. Today I want to talk with you about how to learn a creative skill. And this ties in nicely with the Great MFA Debate that is going on now, and that goes on every year. Usually in the spring, because that’s when people are deciding whether to enroll into programs they’ve been accepted into, a debate crops up on the internet about the pros and cons of getting a traditional MFA. Recently an article appeared in the Atlantic where a couple of researchers used computer analysis of texts to come to the conclusion that there was no distinct difference between the writing of those with formal MFA training and those without. I wanted to weigh in on this debate for two reasons. One, because it kinda goes with my territory as the instigator of DIYMFA and two because I feel like people in this debate often miss the mark and end up arguing about things that don’t actually help you evaluate whether or not getting an MFA is actually right FOR YOU. So let’s take a look at the benefits and the costs of getting a traditional MFA. The Benefits It gives you time to write.Truthfully, committing to an MFA means you really don’t have any more excuses not to put in the time and create the content you are required to for the course. It is one path toward publication. An MFA can help you make connections in the publishing and writing world that you might not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue. It helps you become a better writer. An MFA makes you practice, and practicing your craft will help you improve in the long run. These are all good points, I’ve taken advantage of a traditional MFA myself, and each of these things rings true for me. But what happens when you become too dependent of assignments and external motivators? You might find that you’re unable to write without those external motivations. The Costs Financially, an MFA program can be prohibitive. There are many literal costs to consider, and while a lot of programs have funding for participants, most do not have total funding or funding for all their participants equally. Opportunity costsThese include having to give up a day job, moving to be closer to your program, and travelling (even for low residency programs). The Genre ProblemIf you write “genre fiction” (i.e. sci-fi, fantasy, YA, or anything other than what is considered “literary” fiction) finding an MFA program that specializes in your area is EXTREMELY difficult. You may have to put aside the writing that you really love in order to obtain this education, and that can set you back as far as time spent on the work of your heart, and can also make you feel like an outsider in your own program. What if you don’t get in anywhere? Is DIYMFA the “anti-MFA”? I get asked this a lot, especially around this debate. And the answer is emphatically no. As I said before, I have an MFA and I don’t regret the decision to get one. MFA serves a particular group of writers very well. What DIYMFA exists for is those who don’t fit into a traditional MFA. Whether it’s because you can’t afford to take time off from your job or your life, or because you can’t get accepted into the program you want to join, DIYMFA exists for you. So what does it mean to be a DIYMFA Word Nerd? If you’re part of this community, It means that you’re committed not just to becoming a better writer, but to becoming a better learner. Applying the DIYMFA concepts to your writing is awesome, but applying them to your LIFE? That’s solid gold. “In a time of drastic change, the learners inherit the future.” Eric Hoffer The publishing world is RIGHT NOW in a time of drastic change. We are in the thick of it. Every creative niche is. This age of sharing ideas and the internet has turned all creative industries on their head. Learning how to learn better means we can adapt, we can roll with the punches and embrace new ideas more quickly. So how dothe principles of DIYMFA help you learn? Write with focus. This isn't’ just about putting words on the page. This is about creative output. This principle encourages you to create a body of work. Try different skills, master them. Take a project from beginning to end whether it’s a short story or a photo series. Read with purpose. Be strategic about the information you consume. Balance your reading list to focus on what you’re interested in and also what, in your field, has stood the test of time. Dig in and think about why the pieces of each work were created the way they were. Build your community Connect with others in your niche and exchange ideas. When people exchange ideas, it’s multiplicative, not additive. When two people each have an idea and they exchange those ideas, then each person will come up with a totally different combination of those ideas. From two ideas you get four. Now imagine how many ideas you’d get from ten people sharing. A few caveats about community: WorkshopsI find that workshops, while they are useful in an educational environment, can also be reactive. Instead of giving a writer the chance to get things right before they receive critique, they expect you to get it wrong first. Feedback can be a useful tool, but not before you’re ready. Build your skills first, practice, and create something stronger than you otherwise would. Then when you get critique you’ll be ready for it. Creative distractionFinding creative friends can be a blessing. Finally people who understand you! But it can also be a curse. You can spend so much time talking about the process that you forget to actually do the creative work in the first place. Don’t forget, you can’t exchange creative ideas if you haven’t spent time developing them first. Develop your learning superpower The MFA debate a perennial conversation. But I think we should all put aside our differences of opinion and just write! If an MFA is right for you, if it helps you to be the best writer you can be, then awesome! Go do it! If you can’t or don’t want to get into an MFA program, there are worthy alternatives. You can do the same things yourself and do them just as well. Above all, let’s focus on learning. That’s what will make us adaptable as writers, as creators, as human beings. Resources: Article in the Atlantic Storytelling Superpower Summit DIYMFA book!
