Taiwanese vibraphonist and percussionist Chien Chien Lu, along with Pittsburg, Pennsylvania native bassist Richie Goods, have crafted a sound that is both captivating and rhythmic. Their music draws from a rich tapestry of cultural influences including Taiwanese, American, and African-American traditions, especially within the jazz sub-culture. Chien Chien Lu and Richie Goods are dedicated to expanding their musical repertoire, creating a unique connection that resonates deeply with listeners. In the fall of 2024, Chien Chien Lu and Richie Goods visited Columbus, Ohio, where they met with students at Otterbein University and performed to a captivated full house audience. During their visit, they visited my studio, sharing compelling stories about their individual paths into jazz and the inception of their musical collaboration. Chien Chien Lu recounted her transition from playing classical music in Taiwan to exploring the creative latitude of jazz upon her relocation to the United States. She arrived in the US holding a master's degree in classical percussion but sought the unique expressions of jazz. While pursuing graduate studies in Philadelphia, Chien was introduced to Jeremy Pelt, one of today's leading trumpeters. Impressed by her talent, Pelt included Chien in his subsequent European tour and later featured her in his next album. At that time, Richie Goods was a member of Pelt's band. In 2017, Chien graduated with a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts. It all then fell together. Richie Goods describes his journey into jazz through performing arts school in Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School. After graduating from the prestigious jazz program at Berklee College of Music, Richie moved to New York City, where he studied under jazz legends Ron Carter and Ray Brown. Richie worked extensively with jazz piano legend Mulgrew Miller for nine years, which provided opportunities to perform with other major jazz luminaries including Russell Malone, Lenny White, Louis Hayes, and Vincent Herring. His extensive discography includes Grammy award-winning and platinum albums by Alicia Keys and Common. Connected is a band jointly led by Richie Goods and Chien Chien Lu, and their latest recording is Connected vol. 1. This pandemic era-project was derived from frequent conversations Richie Goods and Chien Chien had about the Black Lives Matter movement and the unwarranted hate crimes against Asians. They decided to do a project that would unify people and invoke imagery of love and peace, says Richie. The result is a dynamic jazz group influenced by global sounds, which reflects the musical identities of Richie and Chien. Connected vol. 1, won "Best Instrumental Album" at the 34th Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan. The playlist for this episode includes five recordings. They tap into their latest recording, Connected vol. 1 and Chien Chien Lu's first recording, The Path. Richie Goods produced The Path and Connected vol. 1. She lives in Manassas Park, Virginia. Her new book We'll All Be Free: How a Culture of White Supremacy Devalues Us and How We Can Reclaim Our True Worth is available wherever you get your books! In this episode, we discuss:Caroline's evolution and what it has taken for her to unapologetically embrace her authentic self. Spoiler alert, she had to do the work to get to know herself and she shares with us her journey of acceptance and self-loveThe inspiration behind her book, We'll All Be Free, and how getting in alignment and not forcing the process allowed her to write her book. We discuss the importance of surrender and following your soul's authentic blueprint How we can distinguish when we are not in alignment, recognize resistance and pivot when necessary The importance of confronting our pain, shame, trauma and challenges and how we can find freedom when we allow ourselves to heal and process our experiences. AND why we must have compassion and grace with others understanding that we are all on our own healing journeys. How white supremacy culture contributes to our feelings of unworthiness and not feeling good enough and what we can do to begin to heal and unlearn this programming. The quote I mentioned (butchered) during the episode: “When I dare to be powerful—to use my strength in the service of my vision—then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” -Audre LordeCONNECT WITH CAROLINE:Caroline's book can and work can be found here: https://www.carolinejsumlin.com/bookGET FREE RESOURCES FROM CAROLINE HERE!:https://view.flodesk.com/pages/64487709b3fdc50fdc8b0f7eLI: Connect with Caroline hereSupport the showIMPORTANT LINKS AND RESOURCES Get my NEW BOOK! Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #507 is an hour of visionary acoustic improvisational music performed live by The Gaea Star Band at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in October of 2022.  With Mariam Massaro on vocals, Celtic harp, Native flute, ukulele, kalimba and acoustic 6- and 12-string guitars, Bob Sherwood on piano, Craig Harris on congas and Native drums and Cevhar Demirel on flute and bongos.  Today's show begins with the stately “For The Greatness” a fine meditative groove decorated with Mariam's elemental Native flute and vocals,  “Every Moment” is a blustery, tonally ambiguous folk song that evokes motion and mystery and “The Portal” is a gorgeous raga driven by Mariam's chiming Martin 12-string and a powerful rhythm section from Craig and Bob.  Mariam forms the outline for the mysterious, evocative “The Portal” with steady guitar chords as Bob arrives at an ostinato in fourths that creates a floating, meditative mood.  Mariam again creates the structure for the arriving piece with the beautiful, deep “A Beautiful Treasure”, this time with her kalimba, outlining a mode that Bob spins into a series of bittersweet chords beneath Mariam's gorgeous melody of deep longing.  “Spirit Calling” is a piece powerfully influenced by indigenous American music, a mesmerizing piano motif, driving congas and Mariam's flowing vocals and Native flute create a lush cloud of sound.  “Let's All Be Free” arrives in flute fanfares from Cevhar as Bob establishes a hypnotic, circular, never-changing piano raga beneath Mariam's beautiful, melancholic melody.  Today's show finishes with the slow burn of “Just Being”, a powerful Native-Afro-Cuban piece that presents each player's strengths in a fiery instrumental and vocal display. Thrive and Shine with Pineapple Queen and Miss Bright Ideas

JOIN US with our esteemed guest, Dr. Anne Whitehouse, as we explore WHY (& HOW) WOMEN HAVE SO MUCH POWER TO SHIFT EVERYTHING in our society’s struggle with self image, subconscious energy patterns, and the limitations of controlling behaviors.   Dr. Anne Whitehouse is the bestselling author ‘Pull Back Your Power’, id a PhD scientist turned Female Power Alchemist, and a subconscious transformation expert & coach. Her mission is now to enable visionary women to level the energetic playing field, BREAK THROUGH SUCCESS LIMITS, income ceilings, visibility blocks, and POWERFULLY FULFILL THEIR DREAMS - all without changing their character, or having to sacrifice their feminine energy. After her own spectacular burnout in “the boys’ club” dynamic of university engineering, she uncovered the HIDDEN ROOT CAUSES that sabotage high-achieving women, and devised a game-changing solution.    We’ll be talking about how the imbalance of the old programming undermines men, and how women can help us ALL move forwards into the new paradigm.   It’s all about balancing power!!! In order to have a truly balanced and empowered society, we each need to live fully in both our female AND male enlightened power, IN BALANCE. The subconscious operating system that undermines women so much is affecting men also thereby triggering the men in our lives. The result can EASILY be full of confrontation and their backlash to a sensitivity around control.  We can ALL BE FREE of the legacy of the past and begin to SHIFT THE BALANCE OF POWER.This is the subject of Anne’s second book - which will soon be available to the public! Message Monica McKenna for the secret link to join our live audience https://www.facebook.com/pineapplequeencoach! We are excited to announce that Dr. Anne's book was selected to  be featured on our Book Club series on our Thrive and Shine Show Starting next Wednesday at 130 est time.Congratulations Dr. Anne Whitehouse!Join us live every Wednesday at 130 est.Message for  the secret secret link. https://www.facebook.com/pineapplequeencoachBetsy Lanz my Cohost and I are so excited!Order your copy here https://amzn.to/31mFdNg Dr. Anne Whitehouse will be speaking inside of our free ladies empowerment group here in June. 365 Brothers - Every Day Black Men

Educator and Entrepreneur, Barak Bomani, is skilled with recipes. One of his favorite memories is helping out in the kitchen as his grandmother cooked up lots of deliciousness. He wasn't trying to learn how to cook, but that's what happened. He started off serving up treats for events while he was at Dartmouth University. Now he runs City Catering which serves up "smoked meats, sides and sweets" based in Compton, California. He also figured out a recipe for student success. He returned to his hometown, Oakland, in the early 2000s to open a charter school. The Board of Education not only approved his approval for a new school, they funded construction of a new $9,000,000 campus to boot. He contributed to the school's design; hired a diverse and committed faculty; and then sprinkled generously with a love for his students. For four years running, his students graduated filled with education and entrance into at least one four-year university to boot. He shares the moments and individuals that had a significant impact on his becoming the huge contribution he is today. Like all Brothers, he drops wisdom throughout the conversation. Barak Bomani is the co-owner of Cultivating Hope, an educational consulting firm. He and his wife also operate Unearth and Empower with a mission to create pathways to college, employment and entrepreneurship for Compton youth through engagement with education and the arts. Lastly, whenever you know you'll be in the South Bay on a Friday eve, visit the City Catering Facebook page by Thursday to see what's good with their "smoked meats, sides and sweets." Barak's favorite words are Maya Angelou's "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." Barak's favorite song is Someday We'll All Be Free by Donny Hathaway. Apple, Stitcher Google Podcasts About this podcast: In each episode, a Brother reflects on his life; explores the experience of being a Black man in America; shares his interactions with law enforcement; and answers the question "If America was a woman, what would you say to her?" Every interview starts with getting-to-know-you questions about favorites, accomplishments and then goes deeper. You won't find a collection of conversations with Black men like this anywhere else. Vineyard Church of New Orleans Podcast (Messages)

Sacred Space at Home Week 3 (July 29th) Welcome: Welcome to Sacred Space at Home, a resource from Vineyard Church of New Orleans! We’re so glad you have decided to join us in this time of worship and reflection. Today we will meditate on Acts Chapter 3. Wherever you may find yourself in this moment, try and make space to listen and experience the presence of God as we pray, hear the words of scripture, and sing together. As we begin, we open our minds and hearts and say, “Come, Holy Spirit.” Song of Awareness We’ll All Be Free by William Matthews There's a world at war Caught in suffering Silent casualties Oh God, grant us peace In these sleepless nights I can hardly breathe Despite brutality I know that we'll be free I know that we'll be free So let the light in, keep it shining Let it break into the darkness All the love dares us to see We'll all be free In these desperate times Love will hold us here Love will join our hands Teach us to have no fear So we lay our hate down To wash their feet When we see our brother Oh, we'll all be free Yes, we'll all be free We'll be free (free), free (free) We'll all be free Tell your sister, tell your brother Tell your father, tell your mother Tell yourselves, tell everyone We'll all be free Tell the lovers, tell the haters Tell the prisoners, tell the jailers Tell the world, tell everyone We'll all be free Scripture Reading (Acts 3:1-10 NLT) Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money. Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened. He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them. All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! Reflection As you hear this passage, what comes to mind? Can you think of a time you experienced God at work outside the walls of the Church? The Spirit opens our eyes to see all people as beloved children of God. Where might the Spirit be opening your eyes to see in this moment? God takes ordinary acts of compassion, generosity, and love, and turns them into extraordinary miracles for the sake of the world around us. How might the Spirit be inviting you to extend a hand for the sake of God’s kingdom today? As you reflect on this invitation, what things may be keeping you from listening to the Spirit more fully? Take this time to ask God to give you the courage to experience and be transformed by the Spirit today. We’ll All Be Free (Reprise) Benediction “As we conclude our time together, may you continue to be aware of the presence of God and seek to find sacred spaces throughout the day.” Let us pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.”

The music continues!!! This time, we bring the mwJazz vibe to Element Boutique Hotel, the cool hip spot where everyone loves to hang out. It's artsy and cozy, and there's an outdoor area with fans where many tend to gravitate. And most important, it's all fitted out with a nice sound system. They've got a wide variety of fun drinks and cocktails, and our guess is, more than one person will head home with half a dozen croissants and a baguette for breakfast the next day ;) Just look for Mae Carl Perdon or Armand Lafare and they'll take care of you. And did I mention it's my birthday? Nothing would make me happier than to celebrate another year of life with my friends. Drop by and give me a hug and a high five! Once again DPGK will be stealthily taking those unique photos throughout the night. If you haven't seen his previous photographic coverage of MUSIC AND WINE Strictly Jazz parties, you're missing out on some serious art! See you this Friday!
