Pre-order our new book, "The Score That Matters." https://amzn.to/3HaJjgh Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes. This is episode #563 of The Learning Leader Show. My guest is Dr. Mike Massimino. The 3 Trusts - Trust your gear, trust your training, trust your team… And the 4th: trust yourself. Mike persisted through 3 rejections over 7 years on his way to becoming an astronaut, including overcoming a medical disqualification by training his eyes and brain to see better. Mike participated in a mission that significantly increased Hubble's discovery potential and led to the award of a Nobel Prize in physics for the discovery of dark energy during a spacewalk. Why Mike was chosen to be an astronaut: Mike has a great combination of competence (he knows his stuff) and high character. He's the type of guy that can get along and work with anyone. He's honest, humble, and authentic. The power of having a deep passion for what you're doing. Mike watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon when he was six years old and then did whatever he could over the rest of his life to become an astronaut. His desire to become an astronaut led him to go to prestigious universities, earn his Ph.D., become a pilot, become scuba certified, develop great communication skills, and so much more. All of that work led to him accomplishing what he set out to do when he was just 6 years old. “I knew right then that I wanted to be a part of something that meaningful. I wanted to have something I was so passionate about that I'd be willing to risk everything for it. I wanted to know that if I ever got killed, I got killed doing something worthwhile. The kid who looked up at the moon and wasn't afraid to dream - I decided that part of me deserved a chance. I sat there in that reception area, watching the crash footage play over and over again on the television, and that was when it hit home for me: you only have one life. You have to spend it doing something that matters.” What Mike learned from Alan Bean: The most important lesson is to care for and admire everyone on your team. “My favorite lecturer was Alan Bean, who flew on Apollo 12 and is one of the twelve guys who walked on the moon. After retiring from NASA, he became a painter. Alan's lecture was called "The Art of Space Exploration." He talked about the mistakes he'd made and how he learned to fix them. One lesson that took him a while to learn was that at a place like NASA you can only have an effect on certain things. You can't control who likes you. You can't control who gets assigned to flights or what NASA's budget is going to be next year. If you get caught up worrying about things you can't control, you'll drive yourself nuts. It's better to focus on the things right in front of you. Identify the places where you can have a positive impact. Concentrate there and let the rest take care of itself. The last thing Alan said to us was 'What most people want in life is to do something great. That doesn't happen often. Don't take it for granted. Don't be blasé about it. And don't blow it. A lot of times, believe it or not, people blow it. “Kennedy's address announcing the Apollo program was one of the great presidential speeches of all time. He challenged us. He excited us. We reach for impossible things, he said, “not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”  Competence + Character = Trust. The Right Stuff - The Original 7 Astronauts. If you have a bad boss, what should you do: Stay the course Lead by example “Life is funny. I'd applied to the wrong graduate program, but that eventually led me to the right grad program. I'd taken what I thought was the wrong undergraduate major, and that was the thing that set me apart and allowed me to find my niche. I don't know if there are any lessons to take from that except to realize that the things you think are mistakes may turn out not to be mistakes. I realized wherever you are, if you make the most of what you've got, you can find a way to keep moving forward.” “If you can learn to live with indignities in life, you can go far.” “That's how a team works. You help the people around you, and everybody's better off for it. The crazy thing is that most of those guys wanted to be astronauts, too, but they never saw it as a competition. We were on the same team, where you want everyone around you to be as successful as possible, because in some way or another their success will become your success. It's good karma - what goes around comes around.” “Right after we launched, I realized that all the training we'd on what to do if something went wrong during launch-how to bail out , how to operate the parachutes, how to make an emergency landing-I realized that all those years of training were completely pointless. It was just filler to make us feel okay about climbing into this thing. Because if it's going down, it's going down. It's either going to be a good day or it's going to be a bad day, and there is no in-between.” “The camaraderie that firefighters have, that brotherhood that forms among them - my father was a part of that, and it came from having a shared sense of purpose. He told me that whatever you do in life, it can't just be about making money. It's important that you work to make the world a better place, that you help improve the lives of the people around you.” Perspective: Mike shares how looking down on Earth from space changed his perspective and filled him with deep gratitude.

#476: Mike Massimino stared in disbelief at his TV. The date was July 16, 1969, and he marveled as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. At that moment, he knew he wanted to become an astronaut. He was six years old. But as Mike grew older, he developed more “realistic” dreams. After all, every kid wants to become an astronaut. The chances of making it are incredibly slim. He went to a local college, studied engineering, and took a job at IBM. But he couldn't shake the tiny voice inside that said – “why not try?” So Mike upended his life. He enrolled in a Ph.D. program at MIT, and then proceeded to fail the qualification exam so badly that his professors gently suggested that perhaps a doctorate isn't right for him. He battled to pass the exam on his second attempt, and went on to teach at Georgia Tech, from where he repeatedly submitted applications to NASA for their astronaut candidate program – which they called “as* can.” He was thrilled when he finally received his acceptance – until he learned that he needed 20/20 vision. At the time, NASA required astronauts to have naturally 20/20 eyesight, without surgery. So he sought out a doctor to help him re-train his eyesight. Then he learned that he'd need to pass a swim test. He was in his 30's and had never swum. “Can't I just take a math quiz?,” he joked. But he … didn't let that sink him. (Pun intended). In today's special episode, former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino explains how anyone – including you – can take your own moonshot. Best known as the guitarist and songwriter for the Tragically Hip, he was asked to play the closing ceremonies of the Canada Summer Games in Niagara Falls in August of 2022. That gig got him playing again after Gord Downey's passing, and the break up of the Hip, and rekindled his love for songwriting. From there, the collection of songs that became his new solo record “Guess What” emerged. Then, Chris Hadfield joins the show. He is an astronaut, engineer, singer, fighter pilot and the author of the memoir An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, the children's book The Darkest Dark, which was illustrated by the Fan Brothers, and the photo book You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes. Last year he wrote a thriller called “The Apollo Murders,” a Cold War thriller that introduced audiences to former U.S. test pilot Kaz Zemeckis, as he attempted to stay one step ahead of his Soviet rivals as Russian and American crews sprint for a secret bounty hidden away on the Moon's surface. James Cameron called it a nail biter, and it hit number one on the best seller charts. Hadfield returns with “The Defector,” once again placing Kaz Zemeckis in the middle of the action, this time as he takes to the sky in aerial combat to hunt down a high-level defector and uncover Soviet secrets. Chris Hadfield joined me via Zoom to talk about creating the character Kaz, and how he approached writing his second book of fiction.

In this episode, we speak to renowned Canadian figure Colonel Chris Hadfield. For those who don't know, Chris is a heavily decorated astronaut, engineer, and pilot, and has received many awards, such as the Order of Canada, the Meritorious Service Cross and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. Colonel Hadfield became a worldwide sensation with his video of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" which was viewed by over 75 million people. He aims to make space more accessible and continues to share the wonders of outer space and science with as many people as possible. Besides his phenomenal professional background, he is also known for his music which he writes and plays on earth and in space! He is also the author of several books, namely An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, You Are Here, and a children's book, The Darkest Dark. Although Colonel Hadfield has a very different background from previous guests, his 35-year career has afforded him many lessons that apply to life, which he shares in our conversation with him. We learn the importance of goals and why reaching your goals should not define your happiness. Hear ways to overcome fear when facing uncertainty, the value of competence, and why enjoying the road to success is more important than success itself. Find out why sweating the small is essential to success, whether Colonel Hadfield suffers from imposter syndrome, and where true happiness comes from. Tune in and discover the secret to success and happiness in this one-of-a-kind conversation with special guest, Colonel Chris Hadfield!   Key Points From This Episode:   What motivated Commander Hadfield to take pictures onboard the International Space Station. Welcome to your Boosted Meditation. You're in the right place if you've got a big presentation coming up. You're also in the right place if you've got a big date on the horizon, or if you're getting to know a new group of friends. Every day we're pitching ourselves in one way or another. Sometimes we even pitch ourselves… to ourselves. Whatever it is, this meditation is designed to help you crush your next big pitch. To figure out the secret sauce of a great pitch, we must ask ourselves, WWDDD – What Would Don Draper Do? Charming. Charismatic. Effortless. Whatever he says, his audience laps it up. But we're not bringing up Don Draper to say that we all need to be more like Don Draper. We're bringing him up because, in reality, he's a scripted character on a TV show. His words are written by a screenwriter, perfected through multiple rounds of editing. It's that behind-the-scenes preparation that makes Don Draper look smooth AF in the boardroom. Therefore—sorry to break it to you—this meditation won't be providing any shortcut solutions—we don't believe in that. Today, we're going to set you in motion, get you nice and ready, to make that pitch… your bitch. Hello 3 Bookers!   Let's close off our fourth year of 3 Books by sitting down with Chris Hadfield at his kitchen table. His five-month old puppy New Henry is sniffling and occasionally barking on his lap. Fat snowflakes slowly drift down outside the big window above the shelf full of succulents. And lying between us is a stack of Christmas cards that Chris is signing along with my copy of his brand new bestselling thriller The Apollo Murders … as well, of course, as his three most formative books.   Commander Chris Hadfield has lived in outer space for six months. Six months! He was named Top Test Pilot in both the US Air Force and the US Navy and has flown on three space missions, helped build two space stations, and commanded the International Space Station.   While hanging out in space Chris wasn't just doing experiments. He was also serving as a global educator. Teaching people through YouTube and social media how to cook in space, sleep in space, and even clip your nails in space. He sent us pictures of Earth from low orbit and helped us see our planet and ourselves in a new light. And while circling Earth over two thousand times — once about every hour and a half, he says — he also made time to create the first ever music video shot in space. You've probably seen his cover of David Bowie's “Space Oddity” which has now been viewed over 100 million times.   So: he's an astronaut and a rock star? Yes, but that's not all. Chris has given one of the most popular TED Talks of all time and is also a hugely bestselling author.   In 2013 he put out An Astronaut's Guide to Life, one of the most popular memoirs in the past decade and an international bestseller for over five years. He followed that up with a photo book called You are Here and then followed that up with a lovely children's book called The Darkest Dark. And now? Well, never content to rest on his laurels and always interested in exploring new terrain, Chris has just put out his first ever novel.   Is there anything Chris Hadfield can't do??   I suppose NASA only selects the most perfect specimens on earth but how does somebody learn how to just … write a novel? How exactly does he think about studying the art and then creating it? What can we all learn from his combined passions for curiosity, self-learning, and self-discipline?   Plus, since Chris is one of the most decorated astronauts in the world, we also get to discuss what space travel might look like in our lifetime and our children's lifetimes. Chris will tell us how 70,000 years ago some thought it was foolish to leave Africa … and yet some did. How 18,000 years ago some thought it was foolish to walk over ice to North America … and yet some did. How 50 years ago some thought it was foolish to blast ourselves into outer space … and yet some did. How today and in the near future some will say it's foolish to settle on the moon or Mars … and yet some will.   I found this conversation mind-expanding on many levels. It pairs wonderfully well with The Apollo Murders which I hope you'll check out. I'm excited for you to hang out at Chris's kitchen table with us. I'll be in your left ear, Chris will be in your right, and Chris is wondering if you'd like a coffee or a glass of water before we begin?   Let's flip the page into Chapter 93 now…   What You'll Learn: What is the beauty of writing Christmas cards? What compels an astronaut to write a book? What is the Astronaut's prayer? How do you prepare for space flight? What is the first question writers should ask themselves? Why should all aspiring writers read On Writing by Stephen King? What do the best mystery and thriller writers have in common? What do mazes and writing have in common? What is the future of space flight? What would humans need to survive on Mars? How can we peacefully settle the moon, and further afield, as a species? What do all new settlement ventures have in common? What is the Earth-Moon economic system? Why do astronauts often live well into their nineties? What are the common attributes of an astronaut? Why should we create much more mundane bucket lists? How should we shape our view of the world?   You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/93    Leave us a voicemail. On this week's Richard Crouse Show Podcast we meet Commander Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space and served as commander of the International Space Station. Now, on earth, the astronaut and bestselling author, is turning to fiction for the first time. James Cameron, director of “Avatar” and “Titanic,” called Hadfield's new book “The Apollo Murders,” “Nail-biting. I couldn't put it down,” he said. The new thriller is set in 1973. In this alternative history the Cold War is still burning hot and is now being projected into space with the Soviets building an orbiting spy station while looking to mine the moon for precious radioactive minerals. With Apollo 18 (the real Apollo missions ended at 17) the U.S. is out to frustrate these plans. It may be that the Soviets are one step ahead though, as they already have someone inside the Apollo program. Hadfield is also the author of the memoir An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, the children's book The Darkest Dark, which was illustrated by the Fan Brothers, and the photo book You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes. Commander Chris Hadfield joins me via Zoom from Las Vegas to talk about his new book The Apollo Murders. Then, Katherine Ryan is a Canadian who moved to England in 2007 with a boyfriend who wanted to start a comedy career in the UK. His comedy career didn't take off, but hers did, and now Brits know and love her from the many panel shows she's appeared on, her wildly popular no-filter podcast Telling Everybody Everything or her Netflix comedy-drama The Duchess. She also has a new series, Backstage with Katherine Ryan, which will showcase live stand-up sets from beloved and emerging comedians. It's slated to premiere on Amazon Prime in 2022. She's known for being hilariously herself in a non-apologetic way, so it doesn't comes as a surprise that her latest project, a memoir that details her rise to U.K. fame and her Canadian life before that as a Hooters waiter and Ryerson student, and before that her life in Sarnia, is called The Audacity.

In the latest episode of the Science Fiction 101 podcast, we review a new book. The Apollo Murders is a novel about space - written by a honest-to-goodness real-life astronaut! The author, Chris Hadfield, has flown on the Space Shuttle, and on Soyuz, worked on the Russian Mir space station, and commanded the International Space Station. You can't get more astronaut experience than that. Hadfield has also written books before, but until now has focused on non-fiction. His best-selling book prior to this one was the autobiographical An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth. But now he turns to fiction, with a thriller set during the Apollo era. But how does it stand up? In the podcast, regulars Colin and Phil are joined by Peter Kuskie to review the book and to join us in a Jeopardy-inspired quiz.

What an awesome book. Prior to starting it, I had a relatively neutral stance on learning more about the last frontier, but boy am I glad I read this book. Also, while reading, I simultaneously watched The Challenger series on Netflix. It's a great combo, and I highly recommend both. I can't wait to share my experience with you. Enjoy this intro episode. ... More with The Spaniard: Spaniard School teaches social and emotional skills to young people. Sign up here. Website Spaniard's books on Amazon  Speaking Info. Col. Chris Hadfield is an amazing guy, and in his book, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, he describes getting ready. He's always getting ready. He started getting ready to be an astronaut at 9 years old after seeing the moon landing. What I found so interesting is Canada didn't even have a space program. Col. Hadfield lived the life an astronaut would have lived and put himself in the best possible position for success. If he didn't make it, he still lived a great life. Enjoying the journey is key (actually his wife enabled his journey all the way). Col. Hadfield is a guy who prepares, who gets ready. That's who he really is. Who are you? I'm a big believer in identity. Who we think we are determines how we live, and how authentic we feel, and dare I say how happy we can be? Some labels are static, like "I'm the boss." or "I'm a top performer." or "I'm a vegan." Some labels are unspoken, like "I always win." or simply "I'm not that type of guy." When these static labels break, we suddenly find out we aren't who we've always thought we were. This cognitive dissidence, this break in who we are causes a lot of stress and confusion. We can become bitter or desperate. On the mild end, we are distraught when we receive criticism or find ourselves in a slump - unable to fight our way out. Jane McGonigal, in her book Superbetter, introduced me to the idea of fixed versus growth mindsets. A fixed mindset is like my kid thinking they are smart and always know the answer. When she got to a question that was tough, she'd fall apart and struggle because that's not who she is. Now we use a growth mindset and talk about how hard she works and how she's the one that asks for help early and keeps going until she finds the answer. You'd be shocked in the difference this had made in her life. Again, I wonder, who am I? I am a learner. I am someone who is always looking for a solution. I have a deep willingness to prepare. Faith in who I am has come from years of experience. The labels can't break. The labels get stronger as I continue to seek and find. What about you? Are you trying to live up to a fixed label that can break? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/greg-dyche/support

"It requires persistence of professionalism. A recognising that even if I'm great at this, there are still ways for failure to happen, for it to rear its ugly head. You have to build an ever-increasing base of readiness to deal with things going wrong, readiness for failure." It feels so real it could almost be nonfiction, and yet it has the narrative drive and power of a rocket launch. This is Apollo 13 times ten." -Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Impact and Blasphemy "A book I just couldn't put down! It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy…reads like MacGyver meets Mysterious Island." -Astronaut Chris Hadfield, Commander of the International Space Station and author of An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth "The best book I've read in ages. Clear your schedule before you crack the seal. This story will take your breath away faster than a hull breech. Smart, funny, and whiteknuckle intense, The Martian is everything you want from a novel." -Hugh Howey, New York Times bestselling author of Wool "The Martian kicked my ass! Weir has crafted a relentlessly entertaining and inventive survival thriller, a MacGyver trappedon Mars tale that feels just as real and harrowing as the true story of Apollo 13." -Ernest Cline, New York Times bestselling author of Ready Player One "Gripping…shapes up like Defoe's Robinson Crusoe as written by someone brighter." -Larry Niven, multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of the Ringworld series and Lucifer's Hammer "The tension simply never lets up, from the first page to the last, and at no point does the believability falter for even a second. You can't shake the feeling that this could all really happen." -Patrick Lee, New York Times bestselling author of The Breach and Ghost Country Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills - and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit - he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Imagine not knowing where you are – and no one else knowing either. Today, that's pretty unlikely. Digital devices pinpoint our location within a few feet, so it's hard to get lost anymore. But we can still get stranded. A reporter onboard an Antarctic ship that was stuck for weeks in sea ice describes his experience, and contrasts that with a stranding a hundred years prior in which explorers ate their dogs to survive. Plus, the Plan B that keeps astronauts from floating away forever … how animals and plants hitch rides on open sea to populate new lands … and the rise of the mapping technology that has made hiding a thing of the past.
