According to food photographer Mica McCook, the secret sauce is more than simply visual appeal, it's connecting to how the images make you feel. As McCook likes to say, she creates cravings, one photo at a time. McCook's photos are dramatic like telenovelas, embracing the magic of a chef's palate, and delighting in the vibrant flavors that bring dishes to life. Her approach is theatrical and bold, akin to setting the stage for a grand performance. Each element, from the decadent chocolate drizzle to the vibrant pop of a fresh herb, contributes to the culinary drama. For McCook, food is not just about sustenance, it's an experience. In a world where fast food and quick meals are often the norm, McCook is here to remind us of the richness and pleasure of a well-composed dish, and to celebrate the chefs who create, the farmers who cultivate, and the diners who savor. As an extension of her photography business, McCook launched her biweekly podcast, The Savory Shot, in June 2022, because she is perpetually curious about the food industry and those who dwell within it. Listen in to hear how a life-altering trip to the Reading Terminal Market, in Pennsylvania, laid the groundwork for McCook's career transition from people to food, and even inspired her unique business name of Austin Food Guide. We also discuss how her background in theater influences her flavorful photographic approach, the dramatic lighting she favors, as well as her collaborative, community-oriented outlook. McCook was recently accepted into an innovative mentorship program for BIPOC photographers led by Apostrophe Reps. Don't miss the juicy details about how to apply! In this episode of the Furbabies Podcast, Stephanie Goodman interviews the founder and owner of Health Pet Austin food stores, Trevor MacKellar, about his journey in opening and expanding Austin's premier pet food store. Trevor shares some of his passions for pets, pet rescue, and what makes Healthy Pet Austin different from the big box pet stores. Find out more info at http://HealthyPetAustin.comABOUT HEALTHY PETTrevor MacKellar and Chris Jabbori opened the first Healthy Pet location in Austin, Texas, at the Shops at Arbor Trails, in June of 2012. The duo has worked tirelessly to make each Healthy Pet location so much more than a simple pet supply shop. Healthy Pet aspires to be a resource for the community, whether it's by hosting an animal adoption event or by educating pet owners about the best nutrition for their pets.Healthy Pet offers a wide selection of premium pet products at various price points, specializing in holistic and all-natural pet foods. Healthy Pet is continuously researching and stocking only premium-quality products that the staff would give to their own pets. All three Healthy Pet locations boast Do-It-Yourself Dog Washes, so customers can enjoy clean pets without making a mess at home. Grateful for the warm Texas welcome for the first three locations, Healthy Pet is proud to announce its fourth location, Healthy Pet Galleria, is set to open in Bee Cave in January 2020. From Arbor Trails and Lakeline Mall to downtown Austin and, now, the Galleria, Healthy Pet is happy to call Texas Hill Country its newest home. Trevor has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a no-quit work ethic. He got his start in the pet industry at just 16 years old, working at a pet store in his home state of Michigan. He started out sweeping floors but quickly rose through the ranks to manager, honing his customer service skills and pet knowledge along the way. When faced with the opportunity in 2012 to open his first store in Austin, Texas, with his business partner, Chris, he jumped at the opportunity. Whether he's educating customers on the importance of diet for a pet's health--one of his favorite parts of the job--or overseeing one of the many events Healthy Pet hosts, Trevor has completely immersed himself and Healthy Pet in the Austin community. An extension of that community includes the Healthy Pet employees. Trevor loves that Healthy Pet is able to offer many young adults their first jobs, teaching them life-long skills regardless of where their career paths may lead; he finds it equally as rewarding to cultivate a positive work experience for long-term employees, some of whom have been with him since the beginning. While he would like to think most people remember him for his great customer service and extensive pet nutrition knowledge, he knows he's mostly famous for being Biggie's dad. While he moved to Austin with Biggie in tow, Trevor has added to his pack since his arrival. Christybeth, daughters Hadley and Harper, cat Little Dipper and Golden Retriever Gibson now make Austin home for Trevor.Tune into the Furbabies Podcast YouTube Channel at http://FurbabiesPodcast.tv.Got a question or suggestion for Stephanie and the show? Director of Strategic Partnerships for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) David Austin sits down for a fearless conversation about the real consequences of hunger, and the potential of power to solve world hunger and create positive change on a global scale. One of the most difficult tasks for creators today is building an active community behind their brand. In this episode, we talk with Opi Abeysekera, an Austin-based entrepreneur who is also the founder of Austin Food Heads. Opi is on a mission to showcase the best food options in Austin (not an easy task) and he leverages a massive following on Instagram to do that with incredible posts, reels and stories that showcase amazing restaurants and food all around the city. In today's world one of the most powerful ways to market not only your business but yourself is to leverage your social media. In today's conversation that's exactly what Opi shares with our listeners. Check out Opi & Austin Food Heads here : Austin Food HeadsCheck out the newest The Real Venture Podcast episodes directly to you - subscribe here. And, if you're enjoying The Real Venture Podcast, please give us a 5-Star rating on Itunes! How to Grow a FollowingFoodheads started as a side hobby to showcase some of the great food that can be found all over Austin, Texas. By focusing on the quality of content he was posting, Austin Food Heads quickly reached 1,000 followers. Following this quick growth, Opi sought out advice from his network. By using better hashtags and proper tagging on each post. Austin Food Heads skyrocketed to over 10,000 in the first 6 months.Understand the different forms of contentInstagram has multiple different forms of content that you can post, understanding the differences and what to post in each form is critical to seeing growth. With the recent competition on the user front from other platforms like Tik Tok, reels are a major content focus. IGTV is another form of content that allows for longer videos, great for uploading long interviews or podcast episodes. For everyday interaction with followers Instagram stories are great ways to share quick updates or answer questions. Using all these different forms correctly will lead to higher engagement and ultimately more followers for your social media accounts. How to leverage interactionsIf you are like most people, the first thing we look at when we upload a post is how many likes we have gotten. But as Opi shares, an Instagram Like is one of the lowest quality forms of interactions. The ultimate goal for every post is to increase the number of Saves and Shares. Instagram weighs these heavier than the traditional likes. Another great way to increase interactions is to leave longer thoughtful comments with more than 5 words. It's a great way to build community and increase conversations on each individual post.KEYWORDS SUMMARYinstagram, post, people, followers, restaurant, austin, food, app, big, interacting, accounts, engagement, ultimately, brand, content, page, platform, started, building, businessWant to be featured in an episode? Salty, sweet, sour, bitter. Scientists once thought these were the only tastes, but in the early 20th century, a Japanese chemist dissected his favorite kombu broth and discovered one more: umami. In recent years, umami has become a foodie buzzword, but for nearly a century, the Western world was in full-blown umami denial—didn’t believe it existed. And we might have stayed that way if it weren’t for our most notorious and potent source of umami: MSG. A 1930s advertisement for Ajinomoto. (Courtesy of the Science History Institute.) Advertising brochure from the late 1940s until the early 1950s for Ac'cent, an MSG product manufactured by the International Minerals & Chemical Corporation. "It’s always scary to stop doing something. But if you don’t stop doing something, you can't do something new. Every time I’ve stopped doing something other opportunities came, or I had time to try something new." Keith Kreeger loves clay. For the past 25 years he has dedicated himself to forming and shaping various types and colors of that material, into beautiful bowls, vases, plates, and many other objects that are intended to be used and enjoyed. After college he set up his first potters studio in Cape Cod, where he grew and honed his artistic and business skills. Then a move to Austin shifted the aesthetic of his work to more simple forms with subtle lines. The look and profile of his business has also evolved over the years as he has strived to stay in tune with his core values and maintain a balance between work, family, what feels right, and what makes sense. His customers are people who care about where the things in their life come from and how they are made. Objects matter. Keith and I talk a lot about his business but also delve into his history in ceramics and his philosophies about his art, his customers, and how he figured out where he is headed. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/4/41335247-836c-4f4a-8a8b-aeca55f3227a/UKdPFt78.jpg Photo by Chad Wadsworth Text courtesy of Keith's website. Meet Keith Besides being the proud owner of 32” paella pan, Keith is an artist, designer and maker. Hailing from the East Coast, Keith got to Austin as quickly as possibly with this wife and three children. Previously he had a studio and contemporary craft gallery on Cape Cod for 12 years. Keith’s aesthetic comes from the singular idea that “objects matter,” and his work reflects that simple phrase, exemplifying clean, polished and modern design. A past-president of the board of Big Medium, the arts nonprofit that produces the East Austin Studio Tour, West Austin Studio Tour and the Texas Biennial, Keith currently sits on the board of the Austin Food and Wine Alliance, the advisory board of Austin Bat Cave and is an active supporter and advocate for the Andy Roddick Foundation. Sure, you can stuff yourself silly with all manner of slow-smoked short rib, brisket and ribs in and around Austin, but there are elements to the food scene there that defy stereotypes, namely, the fact that the casual dining scene there right now is as solid as anywhere. Austin has come a long way from the days of breakfast tacos and barbecue. Sure, you can still find both of those components all over the Texas capital, but you can also find some of the most thoughtful, delicious food, from chefs who've put in their time working all over the world. Steve was just down in Austin a few weeks ago, and managed to catch up with the one guy responsible for documenting every notable place to eat there. Coming up on this week's show, we'll talk about Austin's highs and lows with a local food critic Matthew Odam who has earned his stripes.
This week Andrew and Molly trade stories about the time Andrew got stuck at a Canadian airport, the Austin Food and Wine demo no one will forget, Andrew's lawyer's hippie dance and more. Plus, Andrew speaks a bit about alcoholism and chemical dependency.
