But when it becomes clear that they both have secrets, the volunteer is roped into a darker side of public service – one he can't come back from. Unpredictable at every turn, this world-premiere thriller was commissioned by Manhattan Theatre Club. Written by Rajiv Joseph (Pulitzer Prize finalist for Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo; King James at MTC) and directed by May Adrales (Vietgone and Poor Yella Rednecks at MTC). And now a rambling and too brief review of "Pride of Baghdad" by Brian K. Vaughan & Nico Henrichon, their 2006 graphic novel about a group of lions who escape the Baghdad Zoo during the Iraq War.
In May 2003, Brendan Whittington-Jones, a South African game reservist, joined other volunteers in Iraq to rescue stranded wild animals at the Baghdad Zoo. In the middle of the Iraq War and without any zoo experience, Brendan spent more than a year rehabilitating malnourished tigers, conducting rescue missions around the city to save bears and horses, and even took care of the lions belonging to Saddam Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay. Brendan wrote a book about his adventures called The Accidental Invasion of the Baghdad Zoo. I also wrote an article about the ordeal based off conversations I had with Brendan and Rob Garnett (episodes 2 and 3). That story can be read here — Don't Feed The Lions: The Unbelievable Rescue at the Baghdad Zoo. Follow me on Instagram: @latenighthistory
“Visibility equals donors. The more work you do, the more you're out there, the more people come to see the shows, the more you continue to maintain your lists of who is coming to see the work – the more easy fundraising becomes.” What is the future of theater making? How has creating theater in rehearsal rooms helped cultivate the multi-hyphenate, an economically friendly hiring option for producers? From the point of view from one of the most sought after directors and cultivators, Moisés Kaufman has incredible insight for anyone who wants to found their own company. What are the first steps? What should they be aware of? How do you raise money? Make your company official? Money can scare people – but it's imperative to understand it when creating theatre. On this episode we discuss being pushed into boxes and how that affected his journey of bringing the Tony Nominated musical Paradise Square to Broadway. Plus, there is a ticket giveaway where you and a guest can see the show! All you have to do are these two is: Follow in IG: @dearmultihyphenate Write a review – as long as you write a review from June 1st to June 13th, that review will be considered an entry! For our landmark 800th episode, we're joined by Rajiv Joseph, the Obie-winning playwright and screenwriter whose Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo was a finalist for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, talking about his new play King James, now in its final week at Steppenwolf Theater before its month-long run at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Rajiv talks about how the play found its ultimate shape; the bona fides and credibility he brings to the topic; the theatrical pageantry of sporting events, and how some of that invaluable arena energy is brought into the theater; the largely unexplored area of the emotional impact of sports; and our shared belief that the subject of sports remains fruitful and largely unexplored territory in the theater. EPISODE 79Greetings, Explorers! In our final episode of season 5, the gang takes a look at Pride of Baghdad. It's a fictional tale based on the true story of four lions that escaped the Baghdad Zoo after the U.S. military bombed Baghdad in 2003. Written by Brian K. Vaughan and artwork by Niko Henrichon. The story concerns a small pride of four lions living inside the Baghdad Zoo. First, there are Zill and Safa, older lions brought to the zoo after being captured in the wild. Next, there is Noor, who was born in the wild, but has spent nearly all of her life inside the zoo. Finally, her cub Ali was born in the zoo. Noor is idealistic about life in the wild and sees the zoo and the zookeepers as her jailers. However, Zill and Safa know the beauty and horrors of life in the wild. They see the zoo as a sanctuary and the zookeepers as their attendants, whereas Noor believes the zookeepers to be their jailers. Finally, their differing views on life and freedom will be questioned and tested as they try to survive in the war-torn streets of Baghdad.Dennis and Johnny discuss a problematic scene in the Pride of Baghdad that could have been dealt with differently. Next, they converse about the freedom the lions had or didn't have in captivity. Finally, they look at the tragic ending and the responsibility us humans have towards animals. Additional topics include the nationwide search for a new GNEC co-host; bear vs. lion: FIGHT!; at what point will DC fold these lions into the main DC Universe; Ali's first and final sunset; Dennis's dislike of talking animal stories; and last, but not certainly not least, the storytelling and art of Pride of Baghdad.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/graphicnovelexplorersclub/message See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Giovanna Sardelli, director of “Archduke” by Rajiv Joseph, at Theatreworks Silicon Valley Mountain View Center for the Arts through June 30, 2019, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. “Archduke” tells the story of the recruitment of young men who were to commit the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir presumptive of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1914, an assassination that led directly to what become known as The Great War, and later World War I. Giovanna Sardelli, director of the production, is also the director of New Works at Silicon Valley, and her career is closely intertwined with that of playwright Rajiv Joseph, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his earlier play, “Bengal Tiger in the Baghdad Zoo.” A graduate of NYU, Giovanna Sardelli spent five years on the soap opera “Another World” before choosing her current career path. She worked closely with Rajiv Joseph on the creation of “Archduke,” which was originally a commission from the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. This new production features revisions which strengthen the work. Theatreworks website The post Interview: Giovanna Sardelli, director, “Archduke” at Theatreworks appeared first on KPFA.

Rajiv Joseph's play "Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo" is a compelling, gritty look at the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The play is set in 2003, and follows the lives of two U.S. soliders and an Iraqi translator in Baghdad. Oh, and there's a dead tiger ghost too. Join us as Jackson and Jacob try to make sense of this chaotic, violent, wierd play. They discuss PTSD, theology, and beauty in the midst of rubble. ------------------------------ We had so much fun talking about this play, and we’d love to keep the conversation going!
