Brandon Fluharty is the Founder of Be Focused. Live Great. Selling today leads to many unhealthy habits that result in the degradation of our health and well-being. Above all else, the top 1 consideration should be sleep. Brandon teaches others to take ownership of their sleep by adopting a healthy lifestyle and optimizing it with the help of apps. He is starting to see that a greater focus on sleep, skills, strain, and satisfaction are the critical areas in life that a seller must monitor to become the best version of themselves. HIGHLIGHTS Flexipline: Find the balance between flexibility and discipline A seller's 4 key areas: Sleep, skills, strain, satisfaction Optimize and track sleep with apps Train sellers as athletes: Look at the human first and improve empathy QUOTES Sleep is the number 1 metric in a sellers' life- Brandon: "We inherit a stressful role. There's a demand for predictability in a very unpredictable role. So we have to carry that stress around and, by making a sleep a foundation, you at least eradicate a lot of that physically, psychologically, emotionally." Increase performance metrics to increase sales metrics - Brandon: "This obsession on sales metrics, no, it's actually these other things. And I'm starting to go as far as to say, it's actually if you focus on those other things as the primary, that's what's going to lift the sales metrics and the sales results." Main Point: God is glorified when his children introduce their friends to Him.To introduce friends to Christ, we must:1. Be Friendly outside of church.Colossians 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.1 Timothy 3:7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.Philippians 2:14-15 Do all things without [a]complaining and disputing,[b] 15 that you may become blameless and [c]harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,2. Be Followers of Christ.Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross [a]daily, and follow Me.John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.Luke 18:22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”3. Be Focused on eternity.Colossians 3:1-2 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.2 Corinthians 5:15-17 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.Philippians 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
At the beginning of the relationship, it's so effortless to be in each other's presence. Thanks to nature and biology, the hormones that flood our systems makes being in love the most magical experience in the world. There's never enough time together and you can't keep your hands off each other. Keeping that level of focus and attention on each other and the relationship as you progress through stages and settle together takes a lot of effort and skill (to do it well). Tom and Lisa are dedicated to one another and super excited to help other couples build a beautiful relationship. Today, that means getting strategic and intentional about the time you're giving to your relationship. Many salespeople dream of reaching the illustrious seven-figure earners club. But how can you achieve this goal? In today's episode of The Sales Evangelist, Donald is joined by Brandon Fluharty to discuss his seven-step framework for making seven figures in enterprise SaaS sales. There are core truths to seven-figure selling: You're likely selling to large enterprise companies. While you can do it with small and medium-sized companies, it is challenging. You have experience (and confidence) selling to large clients. You need the patience to endure incredibly long sales cycles. Get in the right environment. Find your “Goldilocks” situation concerning your ideal workplace, whatever that may be. What kind of internal infrastructure do you need to feel comfortable and successful? Build a transformation mindset Seven-figure earners sell a transformation that doesn't just solve an issue; it prevents the problem from happening again. In SaaS, you want to be the player touching multiple parts of the business. And that takes a transformational mindset. Be strategic about your target account list. Sell to clients that give you purpose. Identify the reasons you like you prefer your ideal client, and search for more that fit those criteria. Doing so keeps you motivated during dishearteningly long sales cycles that enterprise companies have. Create a standard no one else delivers. The Diamond Standard - Picture a coal field in your competitive scenario, and be the diamond for your clients. It is easier to perform to this standard when working with the clients you are interested in and passionate about. Break through personal limitations The higher you climb, the more imposter syndrome you'll feel. For example, Brandon initially thought his introversion limited his success. But, as he climbed the ranks, Brandon realized he could listen more than talk. And that weakness turned into a strength. Write down traits you feel hold you back. Then, how can you repurpose those and turn them into strengths? Rally others inside your organization Nothing great is achieved alone. And when you're talking about seven and eight-figure deals, you'll need help. Be a generalist with your skillset, but be a specialist with your outcome. Be confident that you're engaged and can make an impact. Don't dictate; collaborate. Develop a personal operating system Move out of hustle culture and work more intelligently. DFC: Discipline, flexibility, and curiosity. Anything with a start, middle, and end should utilize these components. PREP: Plan, Rest, Effort, Performance. Balance these two frameworks to operate and live life instead of hustling around the clock. (It's a much more humanistic approach.) While we're on a break, we're revisiting some of our most popular episodes, like this one with meditation teacher Caitlin Cady. Caitlin Cady is a recovering perfectionist-turned-meditation teacher, who admits her own obsession with overachieving was making her “more burned out than a roach in Snoop Dogg's ashtray”. Yeah, she might live in Byron Bay but she's not your usual meditation teacher. For one, she loves hip hop as much as she does Tibetan singing bowls. She also owns a bar in Byron and a street mag, and the reason we're speaking to her today, she has a new book, Heavily Meditated: Your Down-to-Earth Guide To Learning Meditation and Getting High on Life (Hardie Grant, $29.99) out now, where she proves “Meditation doesn't have to be boring as shit or narrated by an annoying looooong draaaaawn ouuuuut meditation voice”. And she's done all this while raising three kids under the age of six. “It's a straight up circus at my house!” she tells us.So how does she do it all without letting her perfectionist and overachieving sides take over? Well, you'll have to listen to the episode to find out.In this chat, Caitlin covers:· How living imperfectly leads to a much cooler life· Why “change happens when you get fed up with your own b******t”· How she healed herself after suffering from eating disorders, depression and Lyme disease· A simple breathing meditation you can try· How to get into a flow stateGreat sources she mentions in the chat:· Insight timer for guided meditations and timers· Be Focused pomodoro timer to get shit done· Caitlin's website, caitlincady.com, for more meditation resources See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
(January 1, 2022) Have you noticed that “our spiritual resolutions, those times when we really want to be more God-like in our life,” Father Charles Persing reminded us, "make us want to be more Christian, to be the light that God has sent into the world, the star that guides others. And, perhaps, what we need to do is just be focused on the Lord.”Christ changes everything for us once we are focused on Him. Let us then stay focused on our Lord in our life-long commitment.
Welcome back to the Catapulting Commissions Podcast with your host, Anthony Garica. This week, Anthony is talking with Brandon Fluharty, a former pro soccer player turned sales veteran. He's a VP at LivePerson and founder of Be Focused. Live Great. Today he's sharing how he found success and how he's passing that on to other top-tier sales professionals. Brandon got his start in sales in an unconventional, non-dedicated sales role developing talent of young soccer players on Long Island. From there, he recognized that he had to have an abundance mentality to make things work, so he supplemented his income learning to DJ. That quickly transformed into a sales role, where he started to build his sales career. It's all about creating opportunities and being excited to learn. Brandon insists on falling in love with the process. You have to hustle and have a sort of grit that doesn't allow you to stop pursuing knowledge. Sales is a craft, and you have to treat it like one. That means putting in the time and effort to improve. Brandon is a SaaS sales guru. He got into the space by recognizing, as a marketing and ad salesperson, that things were going digital. So, he adapted and brought his print and television customers into the digital age. He then worked his way up through to Fortune 100 companies. He took a strategic step backward by selling print ads to grow into something much, much bigger. The truth is, you're either learning or you're earning. Brandon was learning about technology but realized he could be earning more by bringing this information into a solutions environment. He left his now comfortable position to dive into the AI space, understanding that he would be in on the ground floor of a massive market. The moral is, complacency is going to halt progress. There are seven steps Brandon looks to when he thinks about his catapult from 200k to 1.5 million in a short period of time. First, get in the right environment to close big deals. Take bets on yourself and have the abundance mindset. Two, be strategic about your account lists. Work within your expertise! Think about companies that will move fast. The third step is this: when you do this, welcome imposter syndrome–it means you're doing something right. You DO deserve a seat at the table. Four, create a standard that no one else can deliver. Take research seriously! Step five is building a transformational mindset–elevate your sales potential. Six: you can't do this alone. Put your team in a position where they aren't doing everything themselves, but free you up to hand the sale off when you need to tag someone in. Finally, step seven is about developing a personal operating system. Think of yourself as a mini CEO and operate in a way that integrates your work and life. https://befocusedlivegreat.com/ https://brandonfluharty.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandonfluharty/
When you're on a hamster wheel, it's not until you step off it for a few moments that you realize how much you've been missing. In this Expert Insight Interview, we welcome Brandon Fluharty, founder of Be Focused. Live Great.
In this episode, Mike is joined by Brandon Fluharty. Brandon is the VP of Strategic Account Solutions at Live Person. He is also the Founder of Be Focused, Live Great. Key Takeaways: A lot of people haven't found purpose in what they do - the best motivation is intrinsic motivation. When you look at elite performers, many have a drive that is driving them toward something most people can't see. When you can align to that personal north star, that's when special things can occur. If we're too busy being busy, when does the real work get done? Elite performers integrate their life and their work because they don't necessarily view work as work - it is their calling. Everything is connected. We can move through things much faster when we put them in their appropriate buckets. During your peak energy, do your high level tasks. Leverage the tools available to you. Operate at an elite level so it can be a consistent mode of operation. Unlock insight into yourself. We have two things we can control during the work day - the start of the day and the end of the day. Have a simple routine for the start and the end of your day. At the end of the day, review objectively and plan for tomorrow. Pomodoro Technique - set a timer for 25 minutes and concentrate on one task. When the timer goes off, give yourself permission to take a break. Allow yourself to be a curious human being. Keep a dedicated place for work and a dedicated place for personal time. You ironically will perform better doing less than you felt like you were doing before because you've created a personalized operating system. You're not just working, you are building a craft. Due to corporate changes, the position was eliminated from the company. She was alone, devastated, disappointed, and felt rejected. She wondered what to do next. After the phone call, She felt that she was eliminated from the destiny for her future. Keeping steady with her mantra, “Have Faith, Be Focused, & Stay Fly” She toughed out these events, she discovered many ways to overcome and move forward. No Fear, Know Freedom - 1 Peter 3:13-17No fear is to know freedom. 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”How do you live in a world that is increasingly hostile toward the Gospel?1) Be Fearless. 1 Peter 3:13-14, And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.”God has called us to be more than bleating sheep. He has called us to be roaring lambs! Proverbs 28:1, The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion. The gospel should make us bold, courageous, and fearless. Acts 5:29, But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.”Courage is not the absence of fear; it's the absence of self. To the degree you are selfless, you will be fearless.2) Be Focused. 1 Peter 3:15, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.”The way to overcome a cowardly faith is to set your heart apart for God. 1 Peter 3:15, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts…” When you live in the fear of God, you will fear no man.Your level of preparation reveals your level of expectation. 1 Peter 3:15, “…always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you…”3) Be Flawless. 1 Peter 3:16-17, “having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”The most important part of our Christian witness is not what we say – it's what people see.Philippians 1:27-29, Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God. For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake. This world is full of suffering. Choose to suffer because you live for Him instead of living for sin.

JB: How'd you get into sales?Brandon Fluharty:Thought I was going to be a professional soccer player, I went to Romania, had an amazing year. But learned something important about myself, which was an important foundation for sales. My Ambition far outweighed my talent compared to other young players who were much further along in their developmentLearned, Focus, discipline, take care of myself becoming a true professionalRan into some injuries, came back to US, Finished school and moved to NYRealized I couldn't play soccer and wanted to be involved in Soccer, got involved with a training organization with youth players in Long IslandIt was my first foray into sales, without realizing I was in sales. We were former players who wanted to build a unique training organization in a competitive space using smaller balls for trainingSold small groups and 1:1 training sessions- wasn't realizing I was selling - I was passionate, knowledgeable but did have a revenue target to hitFrom there - company was sold ….didn't ask for equity in the company ...lesson learnedMoved into the city, started working for a music marketing agency Combined another passion of mine (DJ Tables in his office) working with that agency and see that as my first true step into selling. I was brought on to grow accounts, provided background music for big brands like Gucci, Royal Caribbean...Skratch DJ Academy, Utilize DJs to create background music to make the space more enjoyableJB: Move from Agency to tech sales?BF:Foray back to NY, at the time my girlfriend was a former fashion designer and turned nurse. Made a lifestyle choice to move away from NY, had been there, done that so had the opportunity to move down to Sarasota, FL where she grew up. Was snowing in NY, coming to FL on a beautiful beach, having a cocktail at sunset, dolphins going by...why don't we try this out as an experiment?Bought first house in 2009 at a great time to buy and had to pivot career and completely start over! Remote work wasn't a thing then so I started working for local media companies selling print ads to SMBs. Full-cycle sales grind, cold calling, try and build a base of business working to climb the ranks. Moving from Print to Digital ads, Monster.com → went to local TV station selling ads and moved to Digital marketing company at ReachLocal → From there climbed the ranks, mid-market IT outsourcing firm → Remote late stage startup from SF, Revel Systems → 3.5 years ago recruited to LivePerson, leading in Conversational AI, Working big brands, Delta Airlines, United, Chipotle, Citi corp & more. JB: How do you think about aligning lifestyle with ideal career?BF:I was drawn to sales for both financial freedom and autonomy. I've always created that TIME freedom. I've always thought sales is an ON-RAMP, I'm an intrapreneur now wanting to move to entrepreneur. One thing I've learned and embraced climbing the ranks in sales from the down and dirty pleading to have a local bar buy a 2inch space in a newspaper to working with a Fortune 10 Brand making massive digital transformationI've embraced sales as my craft, after realizing I wasn't going to be a professional soccer player wasn't in the cards for me, but the way I was approaching making a career out of it, I've embraced sales as my craft. When I've given sales that respect as my craft, it has paid me handsomely in all those things that I desired to be creative and do big things JB: Talk to me about the habits and routines that allow you to show up at your BEST?BF:The perception of the seller, makes me cringe…”don't be a used car salesman” I feel really bad as they shouldn't be thrown under the bus. It's this perception of all sellers that you're that person, typically male, extroverted, loud, sleazy and you're just trying to get something done to sell a lemon….that's the common perception globally when you hear of sales. Certainly not of what/how I picture or think of myself. The best way to actually sell is to stop selling. Don't give anyone the opportunity to lump you into that used car salesman stereotype category. It has promoted and elevated the career sales for me personally. When I respected that I could have more respect in my work. 2nd thing I learned. Falling in LOVE, not necessarily with the work, but the WAY I WORK and want to operate. That has been the engine to allow me to move from SMB selling to Super Strategic types of deals then showing people how to move from intrapreneur to entrepreneur. Falling in love with how I operate was a big thing and the way I operate, I don't believe in this false premise of Work/life balance. Unrealistic to think I'll get 8 hours uninterrupted sleep, 8 hours of work uninterrupted and 8 hours family/friends time. This premise of things falling neatly into a bucket and being perfectly balanced, isn't real life especially for today's modern seller. I've fallen in love and respected the love of the craft of sales.I want to embody the professional athlete as I approach my craft. I want to be the Ronaldo, Messi, Lebron of my craft and building work life integration. If I'm thinking about ideas for a client at 9pm at night it shouldn't feel like a burden but something I can get excited about. A Saturday morning, that's fine as long as I'm excited and it's a sign of the right career and my system is working. That's homeostasis!!I have to integrate those things and that has been a big insight for me to climb, sustain and create consistent results. JB:Talk to us about your own journey with mental health. You published a really powerful LinkedIn post. BF:We are humans first, and professionals secondI divulged some really personal information that many people even really close to me didn't even knowEarly in life, I tried to commit suicide twiceAt the time didn't know I had a panic attack in front of a client who was in the officeI got a rush to my head, couldn't say anything, felt frozen and time didn't move. Then 10 years ago at 32 suffered an idiopathic stroke which was a HUGE wakeup call for me. I said I NEED to prioritize my health. I was going super hard. The Mantra in sales is typically, Hustle, hustle, hustle…..you can sleep when you die and I was really living that. Caffeinating in the afternoon, triple shot espresso, little to no sleep and constantly hustling. This pressure was huge to hit quota, you want to be on the leaderboard. There was no reason a healthy 32 year, vegetarian, athlete, etc. should have any of that and it was a huge wakeup call. It's taken a while, 10 years to settle in and still working on it. I'm not shy talking about physical health or mental health, this is something that should be talked about constantly, it's not just about 1 month for mental health awareness. Needs to be de-stigmatized and talked about no different than any other physical health, ailment It was vulnerable, sensitive and was my most popular post on LinkedIn and I'm proud of that as it allowed others to talk about their own mental health struggles.JB: THANK YOU - Talk to me about the tools you use to optimize your health and personal operating system. BF:I'm in the right place, props to LivePerson, work from anywhere, be anyone. How can I be of service to others if I can't be authentic and am hiding parts of myself. Not to say things are perfect now and I have to work very hard at keeping those dark moments at bay. Where I've landed (hate that it's an acronym, we don't need more) I call it PREP - Plan, REST, EFFORT, PERFORM. A Simple way to keep me in check personally. Planning- How do I make it easier tomorrow? → Plan ahead, I add it as a habit into my daily routine. A daily routine how I start and end my day. Everything in the middle will be out of my control. Flexipline- Flexibility & Discipline - If I'm on any one end of those spectrums, not going to have full say in how I control my environment or the outcomes I want to strive for if I'm too flexible. If I'm hyper disciplined I won't be open to opportunity. I found somewhere in between is the sweet spot, sometimes you need to dial up the discipline and sometimes need to dial up the flexibility. Give myself a good starting point and good ending point so I know I can show up and do the fun stuff during the daily Start routine, Reading, getting new knowledge, listening to podcasts, writing, contributing to a book I want to write one day. Then I can do my most important stuff during the day! End my most important dayUse Todoist as a way to capture ideas, notes and tasks so I can pick that up tomorrow. My head can be clear, I can spend time with my wife, I can recover, relax and rejuvenate in the evening. I track sleep with things like Whoop, a great wearable to understand how much I slept and the quality of my sleep and that has started to become a leading indicator of my sales performance and my health. Those dark moments that creep in I can tell it's when my sleep isn't up to par or I get in sleep debt. I realize I don't have energy and discipline to stick with my habits, my nutrition declines and it becomes a downward spiral. It's not that hard if I sleep well, I'm passionate about what I do, that helps me maintain performance in satisfaction so I can then put my E of effort behind my work. Performance- then I can use that data to be my insight. It's become very personal and it's not dictated by my company. I'm not chasing quota and making tons of money, those become outcomes because I'm focused and in love with how I work and how I operate. I had to discover this the hard way.If you can fall in love with how to work, keep yourself in check, and replace good habits with bad habits you will have positive outcomes! JB: How do you bounce back from the NOs on the big deals?BF:2020 was rough and a lot of people struggled2019 was an incredible professional year for me, got my pipeline depleted on the 31st of 2019. Heading to 2020 with a bunch of momentum, energy and confidence….BOOM furloughed employees, crisis mode then the summer comes up with racial issues and more that came into the fold. I came to realize there was more to life than just closing a bunch of deals. I became really introspective and embraced not being on a plan every day and realized this is the moment to look at life in a bigger way and get back to the things that are important. What are the things that are important to me? What do I want to accomplish in life before I die?I went 3 Quarters without closing new business, getting into new habits, new routines and getting back into the system allowed me to embrace a lot of new opportunities that started flying in December. I was able to sprint because I had the physical & mental energy to go for it because I was rested and recovered. I was able to get a huge amount done in 11 days closing a multi-million dollar deal with the team and was able to end on a high note after 3 quarters of not delivering. Because of the work I put in during the quiet time, now I have a system that allows me to keep running. Sprint hard, rest, recover and sprint hard again because in the past 5 months I have delivered more in sales than the last 2.5 years. I owe a lot to this personal way of operating like a professional athlete can consistently get the championship and rings season after season, they do it because they love their craft and want to be the best they can be. They take care of the off-season, take care of their body, get their mindset right, put their full effort in and that's where I feel I am in this place in my career. JB: What leadership qualities do you love?BF:Trust - that you hired the right person and give the freedom/autonomy to let them figure things out. Although I don't manage people directly I have built teams within larger teams and I've always enjoyed that as I didn't want to do the managerial path. I liked building from the ground up. Look at the person on the other side, human first, professional second. When you let them be the best human they can be, they will perform the best as a professional. JB: What does success mean to you?BF:Different things at different times, where I'm at in my career, moment of the day. Something I'm striving for and trying to quantify with a project I'm working on is Be Focused. Live Great. And a tool I'm looking to turn into a product called ThriveSpace ™ and build a community of what this could come up with. Combine health data, the idea of if you enjoy your craft, doing deep work can be highly satisfying. Ensuring you have the moments to do that.I know when I can do deep work and focus on 1 task at a time it's deeply gratifying, we know the science tells us that bouncing back and forth from email, slack, chat isn't where real work occurs and amazing results come from.Tracking that and combining that with my feelings and my mood, that creates this thing that I call a ThriveScore. Being able to know myself, know that I can give myself the gift of time, the gift of health, the gift of working really deeply on things I care about. That's success. JB: Where can people find you?BF: LinkedIn daily posts, good honest authentic conversation. BeFocusedLiveGreat.com Signup and join the movement! Looking to build a community around people who have this shared vision there's more to selling work and modern work than just work Best way to be at peak performance and optimize our selves is to integrate that work and life in a gratifying and satisfying way.Not just tracking data for geeking out, it's to utilize it in a meaningful way to quantify meaning and satisfaction and what ThriveSpace will be as a product - check it out, learn more and join the movement!
In today's episode, we interview entrepreneur, leader, and CEO of Aquila Capital Partners, Mark Watson. Mark shares that the key to success for remote leaders is to understand the importance in clearly communicating the vision and having outcomes based conversations that progress towards relevant KPi's.Since we are not physically together, our conversations must be outcome based. On a remote team, leaders spend more time in the leadership role versus the management role. Just like Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper said, “you lead people, you manage things,” successful remote leaders spend more time leading their remote teams towards their vision and mission. The outdated management style that focuses on closely managing the activities of remote employees during the time on the clock can be detrimental to achieving success. When leaders shift to outcomes based conversations their team members gain more autonomy, feel more trusted, and produce better outcomes. Communication with Remote TeamsSuccessful remote leaders are very strategic in their use of communication. A few years ago, leaders wanted everyone in the office because they wanted to make sure everyone was working. Working from the office gave an added level of security to leaders so they could ensure everything was running smoothly.During the pandemic, when all teams were operating remotely, leaders lost that reassurance they once had in the office. The leaders that had a tendency to micromanage in the office shifted to virtual micromanagement. For some companies, this led to a plethora of virtual micromanagement tactics that has hindered their success. Remote employees began to endure entire workdays in front of their Zoom cameras and - for some - every keystroke on their computers being tracked. What these companies did is apply outdated micromanagement tactics (meant for managing “things”) and applied them to people. Successful Leaders Make Synchronous Time ValuableAt the beginning of the pandemic, leaders were having one hour Zoom meetings just to have one hour Zoom meetings. Employees were experiencing Zoom burnout on a whole new level. Because of this, leaders now need to focus on making synchronous meetings quick, valuable and to the point. Additionally, leaders and their remote teams need to leverage the right communication avenue for the right conversation, which at times can be hard to identify.Virtual Meetings Need to Be Focused and ShortSuccessful remote leaders think about what is really going to move the needle on their goals when they are in a virtual meeting. Inside weekly standup meetings, each person on the team reviews what they're working on. This is meant to keep everyone updated and not micromanage a team member's every move. These short standups allow team members to understand how their work supports desired goals.Keeping these discussions short, crisp, and to the point makes a real difference in valuing the time of your remote team members. In the office, these meetings used to take an hour but they only needed to take 20 min max. The same is true for your remote meetings. By focusing on relevant KPIs, outcomes and vision, successful remote leaders help their remote teams identify their goals, and then let the employees figure out how they are going to achieve those goals. Remote leaders must shift their mindset and language in virtual meetings. Instead of asking, “what did we accomplish today?,” they should ask, “Are we on our timeline to achieve our goals?” Even a simple shift in asking a new question like this produces greater results with remote teams. Leaders then should leave all other work and less relevant conversations for asynchronous communication; for example, DM's, emails, or phone calls.

On today's episode I discuss having a small mindset versus having a big mindset. Having limiting beliefs stop you from achieving your goals while having a big mindset empowers you to go after your goals with tenacity. When we think small we have to ask ourselves if we believe in having an abundant life because we all deserve to. But you have to know that you are worthy of having an abundant life. Having a big mindset is about seeing the bigger picture in life and getting out of your limiting beliefs and comfort zone. When you are in your comfort zone that means you are afraid to take on challenges. So to change your mindset you must Be Focused, Be Fearless, Be Willing, Be Open and Be Ready. I also discuss a woman by the name of Melissa Butler who owns The Lip Bar and how she did not let a "NO" stop her from achieving her dreams. Melissa said it lit a fire underneath her to go after her dreams relentlessly. Melissa's Instagram is https://www.instagram.com/melissarbutler/ and her business The Lip Bar is https://www.instagram.com/thelipbar/ I try to live by Walt Disney's quote he said "All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to Pursure them. Working from seems idyllic but it presents its own challenges, even for the most introverted type of person. And especially during the global pandemic! Here are 25 tips to make the most of working from home. 1. Rise and shine! Pick a regular time to get up every day. 2. Take a shower and get dressed. Wear appropriate clothing that puts you in the best state to work at your best. Don’t stay in your pajamas all day! 3. Structure Your Day. “Structure equals freedom and structure equals results.” - Craig Ballantyne 4. Be intentional. Make an intention for your overall day, as well as individual tasks. This will help you stay focused. 5. Set expectations - when you work, your availability, etc. Let your colleagues and other people know. If necessary, block off time on your calendar. 6. Separate your workspace from your living space. 7. Limit interruptions — i.e., notifications and noise (use Krisp to eliminate noise on Zoom calls, etc. - https://krisp.ai). 8. Set up and TEST your video conferencing. Use a good camera (such as Logitech) and microphone (I like the ATR 2100)—and also your background. Download Muzzle to avoid embarrassing notifications when you are screen sharing (for Mac): https://muzzleapp.com. 9. Single task. 10. Track your time. 11. Use a Pomodoro timer - work in concentrated time segments (I like Be Focused for Mac). 12. Re-engineer your day into 3 mini-days; this was inspired by Ed Mylett (see this great Medium post by Eduardo Lopez for more details). 13. Take regular breaks. 14. Stand up (vs. sitting all day). 15. Exercise. 16. Meditate - a good free app is Medito. 17. Eat healthy foods. 18. Drink lots of water. 19. Wear blue-light blocking glasses. The American Optometric Association advises that when working on a screen, every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. 20. Join online communities - examples including Slack and Comarketing Space. 21. Find an accountability partner. 22. Leave the house regularly — example, schedule coffees and lunches with friends and peers. Harder to do now with COVID-19! 23. Listen to music or ambient background sound (one of my favorites is Coffitivity). 24. Keep a journal. 25. Plan ahead. What about you? If you have a tip, share it as a voice memo at https://anchor.fm/brandonuttley and I may include it on a future podcast episode.

If I was to ask you the question, "what must you focus on when you compete?" What would your response be? I have a good feeling that you are going to say , "WIN!" And of course you want to win, who doesn't? But just focusing on winning will not give you the results you want. If you focus on the result, you don't play anywhere near your capabilities because you are focusing on the wrong thing. You are focusing on the goal. Absolutely it is important to set the goal because that is your destination but, there are a series of steps that it is going to take to get you there. One of the most important steps is; 'Staying in the Moment'. When you think about it, whether you have competed, practiced or trained, when has it been your best session? It's that feeling you get (in a zone) that you are calm, you anticipate well and you feel like you can do anything. Getting that result you want, when you consider this, it is a series of 'staying in the moments' that will help bring out your better performances that will give you better results. How do you do that? Here's what to focus on; * When you go out to train and/or practice for your sport I want you to work on staying in the moment. * As soon as you notice your mind drifting see if you can bring your mind back to focusing on what you are doing. * Train yourself to feel the technique by staying in the moment and the more you practice this eventually it will flow. Have you signed up for the FREE Successful Athletes Masterclass? In this I show you; what's holding you back from accomplishing your goals. how to get your mindset right for striving towards your future (your destiny). how to identify your strengths and weakness in your sport and your mental side of your sport. how to craft your plan to go after your sports goals in a strategic way. How would you know if you have hit a plateau? Let's have a look at what a plateau looks like; * you are working really hard and not seeng any change. * the harder you work you feel like you are going backwards. * there is no progress in your development. * you question whether your training and practice methods are right. * you are furstrated because there is no change. * you are angry. * you question and doubt yourself, are you doing the right things? Should you make changes or should you keep going? And yes it's a really frustrating place to be in because you are not seeing any progress and we always like to see progress. We actually like to see it all the time. And if we don't see it we believe we are not improving. The reason for that is because we always want to be moving forward. This is what happens when we set a goal; * we plan it out. * we have all the elements in the plan we have to work on. * we set goals for the year, quarter, month, week and day that we want to accomplish. It's exciting because we have set the vision for what we want. Then, we begin to work on the plan. Initially it is exciting because it is new and a change from what we were doing before and we get right down into it and work really hard at it. And yes we see progress in the beginning therefore, we expect that it will continue. But at some point it slows down; * it gets boring. * it gets hard. * it gets frustrating. The progress has slowed down or it feels as though it has stopped. What do you do? Do you stop, do you keep going or do you make changes? How do you know if the progress has stopped? Just by how you feel or whether you have won or lost? Well, that won't give you a good enough indication. What we want to see is see the data. It is much deeper than a win or a loss. Eveything feels like it is at a stand still right now. No one is sure what to do... none of us are. But the most important thing is that we must endeavour to stay safe and follow what is recommended. Numerous businesses, schools, sporting facilities and gyms are being shut down for who knows how long. Sporting competitions are on hold. It can be easy to get caught up in the hysteria, what the media updates tell you and the lockdowns. There are fears. A big fear is the fear of the unknown. I spoke about that in the episode "What Paralyses Us" https://tiffanymikapodcast.fireside.fm/what-paralyses-us. I spoke about how fear of the unknown can cause us to get paralysed because we don't know what will happen. Then what happens is that we start to create stories in our mind of different senarios of what could happen, we then feel anxious and uneasy. But remember they are just stories, they are not true, nothing has happened. For you now, you can't control what is going on in the outside world - but you can control your thoughts and how you want to show up in the world. So let's do something about this... let's craft the future you want to see for yoursel. Create Your Manifesto 1. Your Sport - what is your ultimate vision for your sport? Explain here in detail. 2. Your Business - what is your ultimate vision for your business? Explain here in detail. 3. Your Life - what is your ultimate vision for your life? Explain here in detail. 4. Caitlin Cady is a recovering perfectionist-turned-meditation teacher, who admits her own obsession with overachieving was making her “more burned out than a roach in Snoop Dogg’s ashtray”. Yeah, she might live in Byron Bay but she’s not your usual meditation teacher. For one, she loves hip hop as much as she does Tibetan singing bowls. She also owns a bar in Byron and a street mag, and the reason we’re speaking to her today, she has a new book, Heavily Meditated: Your Down-to-Earth Guide To Learning Meditation and Getting High on Life (Hardie Grant, $29.99) out now, where she proves “Meditation doesn’t have to be boring as shit or narrated by an annoying looooong draaaaawn ouuuuut meditation voice”. And she’s done all this while raising three kids under the age of six. “It’s a straight up circus at my house!” she tells us.So how does she do it all without letting her perfectionist and overachieving sides take over? Well, you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out.In this chat, Caitlin covers:· How living imperfectly leads to a much cooler life· Why “change happens when you get fed up with your own bullshit”· How she healed herself after suffering from eating disorders, depression and Lyme disease· A simple breathing meditation you can try· How to get into a flow stateGreat sources she mentions in the chat:· Insight timer for guided meditations and timers· Be Focused pomodoro timer to get shit done· Caitlin’s website, caitlincady.com, for more meditation resourcesCredits:Your host is Lizza Gebilagin, @lizza_marieWith thanks to special guest Caitlin Cady, @caitlincadyFor more from Women’s Health Australia, check out @womenshealthaus on Instagram, womenshealth.com.au or subscribe to the magazine. Being an entrepreneur, growing a business, and becoming a leader seem to be on one side, and on the other, there's finding a life partner, maybe having children, and being present for your family. It all seems like an impossible balancing act, one that every leader has to face where stress and anxiety become an everyday way of living. Attempting to fulfill this juggling act can make it seem like many things are going to get dropped, or that there is no real way to succeed. But what if we’re going about this all wrong? What if instead of doing more, we actually need to do NOT just less, but nothing? Is that even possible? Well, stay tuned because our guest on this episode is Rob Dube. Rob is co-founder of ImageOne, a Top 25 Forbes Small Giant. He's gone from Blow Pops to Forbes Best Small Companies! Rob started his first business in high school where he was selling Blow Pops out of his locker. Today, he’s the founder of Do Nothing and author of the best-selling book, "Do Nothing - The most rewarding leadership challenge you will ever take". Episode 12 of The Teaching Space Podcast explores the Pomodoro Technique and why it is the perfect productivity tool for teachers. Podcast Episode 12 Transcript Welcome to The Teaching Space podcast, coming to you from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Hello, and welcome to Episode 12 of The Teaching Space Podcast. It's Martine here, thank you so much for joining me. In today's episode, I'm going to talk to you about why I believe the Pomodoro Technique is the perfect productivity tool for teachers. What is the Pomodoro Technique? If you've not come across the Pomodoro Technique before, it is a time management method developed by a chap called Francesco Cirillo in the late 80s. The technique involves using a timer to break work down into intervals. And traditionally, those intervals are 25 minutes in length, and a 25-minute chunk of work is called a Pomodoro. Why Pomodoro? It's called a Pomodoro because Mr. Cirillo used to use a kitchen timer that was shaped like a tomato, and I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, pomodoro is Italian for the word tomato. Now, I'm going to have to double check that on Google. One second. Phew. According to Google, I am indeed correct. That is why the Pomodoro technique is named as such. How Does it Work? You're chunking up work into 25-minute slots and after you've done your 25 minutes of work, you have a five-minute break. Just to outline really clearly how the Pomodoro technique works: You select a task that you need to complete, then you work out how many Pomodoros you're going to need in order to complete that task. Personally, I class the Pomodoro as 30 minutes because five minutes of that is your break. Say you've got a job that's going to take an hour and a half, that means you're going to need three Pomodoros. What you do is you set your kitchen timer or your timer on your mobile device for 25 minutes and then for 25 minutes you work uninterrupted, 100% focused on the task in hand. When your alarm goes, you then take a five-minute break. Your five-minute break is best spent doing something very different to the task in hand. For example, if you're doing computer-based work, spend five minutes getting a breath of fresh air or moving away from your computer to get a cup of coffee or something along those lines. Put the timer on for the five minutes, though, because that five-minute slot needs to be managed with the same care as the 25-minute slot. Then it's a case of rinse and repeat. For every four Pomodoros you do, you should take a slightly longer break. It's recommended that you take, say, 20 or 30 minutes after you've done four Pomodoros, which is two hours work. Timers As I mentioned, this method was invented in the 80s where we didn't use smartphones, so Francesco Cirillo used a kitchen timer. A simple kitchen timer. And, of course, you can perform the Pomodoro technique in exactly the same way. Personally, I tend to use the alarm on my mobile device. There are a number of apps that are set up for use with the Pomodoro technique and a very, very quick search for Pomodoro on the iOS app store comes up with a load. There is Focus Keeper, which is a free app that I've used and it's really good. Be Focused, rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/workflow-timer/id733300214?mt=8">Workflow Timer and a number of other options. Flat Tomato is not one I've tried, but I rather like the name of it. There are a variety of apps that can help you utilize the Pomodoro technique. Perfect for Teachers Why am I telling you that the Pomodoro technique is a great productivity tool? In fact, the perfect productivity tool for teachers? Good question. I think one of the biggest shocks for me moving from private sector to public sector and working as a teacher was working to a timetable. I haven't worked to a timetable since being at school. It was quite overwhelming initially. I really enjoyed the structure of it, but what I found very, very challenging was the fact that non-contact time seemed to be very short, snatched moments of time between lessons, and because of that day structure, because teachers often don't have long stretches of time to do focused work, the Pomodoro technique works brilliantly for us. When you work in short bursts and they are timed, you get into a state of flow much more quickly. You train yourself to get in the zone, and you are less inclined to be distracted. The Pomodoro technique makes you focus more, and for that reason alone I think it can revolutionise the way teachers deal with their non-contact times, so the time that they are not in the classroom. Your task might be marking, it might be preparation, anything like that. If you break it into Pomodoros and you do that really focused work, you'll get into flow more quickly and you will ultimately get more done. Parkinson's Law Parkinson's Law suggests that activities will expand to fill the time allotted to them. Meetings are an amazing example. If you set an hour for a meeting, it's going to take an hour, even if you only needed 20 minutes for that meeting. By using small chunks of time, 25-minute slots, you get to be more in control of the time it takes to complete a task. And the other thing you end up doing is more accurately estimating how long something is going to take you. If you have a pile of assignments to mark, you have a really good look at that pile, and you get better and better at estimating how long that's going to take. I really believe that Pomodoro technique is the ideal productivity tool for teachers. Why don't you give it a go? I'd love it if you let me know how you're getting on or perhaps you use the technique already, perhaps you're already Pomodoroing. I don't think that's even a thing, but let's go with it. Do let me know, I'd love to hear from you. The Teaching Space Staff Room The best way to chat about productivity tips for teachers is to join my Facebook group, The Teaching Space Staff Room. Wrap Up Okay, that's all from me today. I hope you enjoyed this episode. If you did, please consider leaving a positive iTunes review for the podcast, because that way the show can be found by more people and I'd really love that. I'd like to speak to as many teachers and people working in education as possible. Thanks for listening, and I hope you'll join me next time.
