This is how you go from not wanting to be unhappy to working your passion to Shark Tank to Lipstick Empire. Way to go, Melissa Butler. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is ... well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [No Bull RV Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here along with Stephen Semple. And today you may say, gosh, they sound a little different. And maybe I hear birds or- Stephen Semple: We have no idea what these mics are picking up. Dave Young: We don't know what you're going to hear, but we're sitting outdoors. We're sitting on the north patio of the dining hall in the tower at Wizard Academy in Austin, Texas. And for the first time in, I don't know if we've done this before or we've recorded a podcast face-to-face in the same room. Stephen Semple: I don't think we have. Dave Young: We're always on some either Zoom or Riverside FM or some magical internet based thing. Stephen Semple: Yeah, no, I don't think we've done in person. I don't think so. Dave Young: Well, welcome to my world here. We're at Wizard Academy. I'm the vice chancellor, by the way, and also one of Stephen's business partners with Wizard of Ads. And you're here to teach a class this week. Stephen Semple: Yes. Dave Young: Which is exciting. Stephen Semple: Very exciting. Dave Young: I don't know if people are going to hear this long after the fact. Stephen Semple: Yes. But we're going to do it again. Dave Young: We're glad that you're here and excited about the class. Stephen Semple: Yes, yes. It's going to be very exciting. How to market professional services, so it's going to be awesome. Dave Young: It's going to be fun. I didn't even ask you as I started the countdown, what the topic is. Stephen Semple: I know. Because we're used to the countdown thing being on the screen. Dave Young: My countdown was, I'm just going to hit the go button and see if this is sticking to the tape. I think it is. Stephen Semple: We're going to lean into a category you know really well. Lipstick. Dave Young: Lipstick? Is there a particular brand? Stephen Semple: Yes. Lip Bar. Dave Young: Lip Bar? I'm a total blank. Stephen Semple: Well, they've done pretty well. Lipstick's a huge market. Lipstick itself is a $9 billion business. Dave Young: Trust me, we wash a lot of it off of wine glasses here. Stephen Semple: But Lip Bar was founded by Melissa Butler, and today they're in like 500 stores, Target and things along that line. They're a private company, so I had a really hard time finding actual sales figures for them. But when you're in 500 stores and growing, you're making things happen. Dave Young: Mm-hmm. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: 500 stores. Stephen Semple: But what was really cool about learning this story is Melissa Butler started making her own lipstick in her apartment. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: That's how this all started. Dave Young: I'm trying to think of how, if I set out ... First of all, I'm not going to, but if I set out to make lipstick, what would I even .... like what's on my shopping list? Stephen Semple: Oh, you're melting waxes and you're getting color agents and you're pouring it into tins and you're having to cure the tins and then you're having to get it out of the tins and into the packaging. It's quite a process. Dave Young: Do I have to go kill a whale? Stephen Semple:
Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Melissa Butler. She is a Detroit native who has skillfully and strategically launched a start-up beauty brand, The Lip Bar, into a nationwide phenomenon. Melissa obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Business Finance from Florida A & M University before going on to work on Wall Street as a licensed stock broker. Her journey from stocks and bonds to beauty is one that she describes as natural, not because she loved makeup, but because she was frustrated with the industry and therefore created a solution. She wanted to create a brand that would be inclusive, non-toxic and easy to use so that everyone could see themselves as beautiful. “Everyone deserves to have representation. Without it, we are left seeking validation” she says. It was her belief in health and inclusion that lead her to make lipstick in her kitchen and develop the vegan line, The Lip Bar. A career pivot is usually described as, “Changing from one career to another within the same industry or general field.” Well, Melissa Butler is here to let everyone know that this definition is not always accurate. Going from a career as a Wall Street Banker to founding, owning, and running her own vegan-based, woman-focused cosmetic line is a testament to how widely this word can be applied. Finding your true path in life is never easy, but taking the first step and pursuing a business that you believe in is worth any risk as Melissa can attest. On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Melissa Butler to the Friends in Beauty guest chair! Increasing representation and empowering women one day at a time, Melissa Butler, is a Detroit native who has skillfully and strategically launched parent company The Lip Bar Inc, which houses the cruelty-free, disruptive, and innovative beauty brands The Lip Bar and Thread Beauty, into a nationwide phenomenon. Her pivot from stocks and bonds to beauty is one that she describes as natural and necessary, as her frustrations with the beauty industry's lack of diversity, inclusion, and non-toxic offerings. Melissa decided who better than herself to provide a solution. When Melissa started The Lip Bar in 2011, there was little to no conversation about inclusion in the beauty industry, and lines with large shade ranges were often laden with chemicals or incredibly expensive. While Melissa did not think of herself as a makeup maven or as an entrepreneur, she was a consumer who couldn't find what she needed. As a result, she started experimenting with cosmetic chemistry in her kitchen creating lipsticks, and eventually left her job on Wall Street to expand The Lip Bar as the vegan, non-toxic, and inclusive beauty brand. In the midst of celebrating the 10th year anniversary of The Lip Bar, Melissa launched Thread Beauty in February 2022 as the first-of-its-kind, unapologetically inclusive and cruelty-free brand inspired by the authentic experiences of Gen Z people of color. The brand challenges the lack of representation for the gender fluid community while offering inclusive and multi-use products at an amazing price point, with all of the Thread products at $8. Today The Lip Bar is sold in its flagship store located in Downtown Detroit, and sold on TheLipBar.com, Target, Walmart, and recently launched in 3,000 CVS stores nationwide. Thread Beauty is available for purchase at threadbeauty.co, Target.com, and Target stores nationwide. Enjoy this episode!! While working long hours as a Wall Street analyst, Melissa Butler started making lipstick in her kitchen as a hobby. But it soon turned into an obsession, costing thousands of dollars. She was frustrated by the lack of diversity in the cosmetics industry, and as a Black woman, wanted to create lipstick colors that complimented her complexion and style. So in 2010, she launched The Lip Bar, with bold colors like green and purple, and boozy names like "Cosmo" and "Sour Apple Martini." Undeterred by a disastrous appearance on Shark Tank with her partner Rosco Spears, Melissa was motivated to pitch her lipstick to Target, and in 2016, launched a new color on Target's online store. Today, The Lip Bar—rebranded in 2021 as TLB—has expanded to stores nationwide and is now the largest Black-owned makeup brand sold in Target stores. This episode was produced by James Delahoussaye, with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Neva Grant, with research help from Daryth Gayles. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Recently touted as the largest Black-owned beauty company at Target, Melissa Butler's Lip Bar is truly in a league of its own. But Melissa's rise to the top was anything but linear. Starting her career out on Wall Street, the Detroit native quickly grew tired of the pressure to represent her entire community in predominantly white spaces. And as a lifelong beauty lover, she couldn't help notice parallels when it came to diversity and inclusion within the cosmetic industry. From there Lip Bar was born. Tune in as we break down the intersection of colorism and beauty, the importance of giving grace to Black founders, launching her new Gen-Z beauty brand Thread, and so much more. Makeup isn't just about accentuating your cheekbones or plumping up your lip color. For Melissa Butler, former Wall Street worker-turned-beauty-entrepreneur, makeup is more about confidence than anything else. Even so, it took time to build the self-esteem and inner belief that has helped take The Lip Bar, and now, Thread Beauty, from her kitchen to Target and Walmart across the country. Starting out experimenting with her own recipes in an industry where she didn't have experience, Melissa was bound and determined to create a makeup line that celebrated creating one's own standards of beauty rather than pandering to men or media. The Lip Bar and Thread Beauty continue to shake up the status quo, offering vegan, non-toxic, cruelty-free options that are fun and affordable to people of color and beyond. Thanks for listening! On this episode of Woke By Accident Podcast, we share a moment of inspiration derived from the appearance of Melissa Butler, CEO of #TheLipBarInc on #TheSharkTank on 2015. While she did not leave the show with a deal from one of the "Sharks" and faced negative feedback, she did not let this moment define her and it actually catapulted the company in a position to be even more successful. We find inspiration in the determination of the company, which is black-owned and woman-owned; and we salute them. Unlike many beauty entrepreneurs, Melissa Butler, founder and CEO of The Lip Bar, wasn't a makeup or skin-care fanatic. Butler started her professional career at Barclay's, and her entree into beauty was driven by being frustrated with how women were judged by their looks -- this was especially true on Wall Street. "I oftentimes was having to show up for myself in a multitude of ways, thinking about what my hair looked like, what my makeup looked like, and also, ultimately, thinking about what my core work performance was," she said on the most recent episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. "In thinking about how I showed up and what beauty meant to me, I became incredibly frustrated -- frustrated with the beauty industry, its lack of diversity, not seeing people who look like me. [It] really was just this idea that beauty was linear. And I was like, 'Wait, no'. Beauty doesn't look like one thing. It looks like all things, and I'm included within that." In many ways, The Lip Bar, launched in 2011, was the opposite of what was prevalent in beauty at the time. "I very vividly remember the beauty industry and the media essentially putting the Kim K. look on a pedestal. That Kim K. look was supposed to be aspirational for every single woman in the United States. Meanwhile, only probably 2% of the women in the country look like her," said Butler. "It's like, 'Well, if she is the standard of beauty, then how am I to be made to feel?' That's something that I was questioning -- I was questioning it for myself, for my friends, for my family and just everyday women." The Lip Bar, which first debuted with lip products, launched with unexpected colors like purple, blue, yellow and orange. "We didn't even have a single red or nude lipstick... [That was] really to say I'm making a statement that beauty is a matter of self-expression," she said. Ten years later, the once DTC-only Lip Bar has expanded beyond lip to complexion products, launched in national retailers like Target and Walmart, and doubled its sales every year for the last four years.

On today's episode I discuss having a small mindset versus having a big mindset. Having limiting beliefs stop you from achieving your goals while having a big mindset empowers you to go after your goals with tenacity. When we think small we have to ask ourselves if we believe in having an abundant life because we all deserve to. But you have to know that you are worthy of having an abundant life. Having a big mindset is about seeing the bigger picture in life and getting out of your limiting beliefs and comfort zone. When you are in your comfort zone that means you are afraid to take on challenges. So to change your mindset you must Be Focused, Be Fearless, Be Willing, Be Open and Be Ready. I also discuss a woman by the name of Melissa Butler who owns The Lip Bar and how she did not let a "NO" stop her from achieving her dreams. Melissa said it lit a fire underneath her to go after her dreams relentlessly. Melissa's Instagram is https://www.instagram.com/melissarbutler/ and her business The Lip Bar is https://www.instagram.com/thelipbar/ I try to live by Walt Disney's quote he said "All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to Pursure them. Then, former first lady Michelle Obama is collaborating with a Detroit native and founder of The Lip Bar, Melissa Butler. Their goal? To increase voter registration, get voters to the polls, and change the culture around voting. Melissa joins me to talk about it. Detroit native Melissa Butler went from working on wall street to skillfully and strategically launching a start-up beauty brand, The Lip Bar, into a nationwide phenomenon. When the Florida A & M University grad took her line of custom-made, vegan lipsticks on ABC's “Shark Tank” in 2015, she was laughed out of the room. But the experience only further ignited her ambition to succeed. And it taught her an important lesson about persistence that would years later allow her to land The Lip Bar's products on shelves at 142 Target stores across the country. Take a listen as we discuss her journey from stocks and bonds to beauty and how she makes a healthy lifestyle a priority. On this episode of the Impact Michigan podcast, we talk to Melissa Butler of The Lip Bar. She is a Detroit native, Cass Tech and Florida A&M grad who left a career on Wall Street to solve a problem that she just had enough of. After being fed up with how the beauty industry's norms were reeking of excessive chemicals and a linear mode of thinking, she created The Lip Bar. With The Lip Bar, she's been on Shark Tank, given a TEDx Talk, and is selling in Target stores across the nation. She famously said that “Everyone deserves to have representation. Without it, we are left seeking validation.” I got the chance to chat with her minutes before she gave her talk at TEDxDetroit this past August. We had so many gems from our talk with Melissa Butler, that we had to make two episodes! The first episode can be heard here. In this episode, Melissa discusses how she started The Lip Bar and her advice to would be entrepreneurs out there. QUOTE IT “If you don’t like your situation, change it.” (6:21) “Don’t rush it … Launch with something that is electric.” (11:58) “Reinvention leaders have to tie whatever they're doing to the bigger story.” (18:49) DIG IN (3:54) From Detroit to Wall Street and back. Melissa Butler is a dynamic person. We met her when touring Pony Ride with our spring STARTERS program. She is the founder and CEO of The Lip Bar. She was on Shark Tank and although they didn't get funded, they got tremendous exposure and Melissa had the ability to take advantage of the added interest in her product. Her marketing shatters all traditional molds for beauty products and she knows her target audience so well that she's named her and knows what she does on any given day. We got so much from Melissa that we broke the interview into two parts. The second part will be released later this fall. Both podcasts are inspiring! QUOTE IT “You’re not just selling products, you’re selling yourself. You’re selling a story.” (4:52) “People don’t buy what you sell, they buy what you believe.” (10:45) DIG IN (4:52) Basics of brand loyalty. (6:40) Craft a compelling story (The Why). (14:20) How to tell the story. (15:41) Build a profile of your customer. Tip of the Week Simplify your marketing by developing a persona of your target market. Think about that person when creating your promotional materials.
College Archivist Beth Swift chats with Butler, professor emeritus of political science, about her experience teaching at Wabash College. (Episode 27)
