The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Ed Templeton is a professional skateboarder, contemporary artist, and photographer. A teen skate prodigy from Orange County, California, Ed turned pro in 1990, just before graduating high school. He did a lot of touring for skate demos, along the way picking up a camera and documenting the scene around him. He painted and drew, and later incorporated his artwork and graphics for Toy Machine, the skateboard company he founded in 1994, which he continues to own and manage. Templeton's visual artwork first gained recognition in the late 1990s as part of the Beautiful Losers collective loosely gathered around Aaron Rose's Alleged Gallery on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He and his wife Deanna—also a photographer—are the subjects of the 2000 Mike Mills film, Deformer. Templeton's subject matter focuses on the ethos of suburban and street life, which sometimes includes beach culture, surfers, and surfing. He has published over thirty books and zines of his photographs and artwork, including one of his most famous titles, “Teenage Smokers.” His work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world, most recently at the Long Beach Museum of Art, in an exhibition titled: Wires Crossed: The Culture of Skateboarding, 1995-2012. In this episode of Soundings, Templeton and Jamie Brisick talk about crafting a sustainable career as a skateboarder, capitalism, skateboarding's DIY ethos, documenting skate culture, becoming a painter, identity, individualism, and Mark Gonzalez.

From ads to political rhetoric and real violence, you've probably noticed racism is in vogue these days so long as it's hatred and intolerance towards white people, specifically white males. This week, 1819 News CEO Bryan Dawson sits down with Jeremy Carl, a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute and author of the hit book The Unprotected Class: How Anti-White Racism is Tearing America Apart to discuss the one subject we all see but aren't supposed to talk about. Dawson and Carl discuss the manufactured baby boom of “Native Americans” on the census due to Whites selecting Native American instead of White to gain better treatment; the deleterious effects of anti-white hiring policies on healthcare, our national security, and our military readiness; and even what really happened with white-flight. Is the racism and hatred aimed at a lack of melanin or is it because “whiteness” is perceived to represent Christianity and Western Civilization? If you're curious, you'll want to listen. The answers to these questions will surprise you and leave you wondering what can be done. Thankfully, Carl gives some great thoughts on solutions moving forward. 4X4: HARMONY KORINE PT. 1 OF 2: BEAUTIFUL LOSERSPEANUT BUTTER SISTER F*CKERGUMMO & JULIEN DONKEY-BOYYou must out-plastic them this episode: Jack “The Jammin' Jabber” along with regional chair-wrestling champion Ken join Thomas (it's just Thomas) for the second director in our 4x4 series Harmony Korine (1973 – 4ever) covering not just why angels ain't got no hooves but Korine's first two films GUMMO (1997) and JULIEN DONKEY-BOY (1999). Auteur of “mistakist art” and partially raised by circus folks before his buddy got his head cut off in this park in Nashville—Harmony Korine—yes, we could cover more of the life of this enfant terrible in these show notes but if you invite Hitler into your home make sure you have ground rules about eating titties. TOP 100 SECRETS KNOWN TO THE ILLUMINATI THAT MAY HAVE KILLED BOB HOPE #62 – The connection between Meryl Streep and Harmony KorineGUMMO – Fictionally located and originally meant to be shot in Xeno, OH, home of Alien World Skateboards and many devastating tornadoes (instead shot in Harmony's hometown of Nashville, TN), this premiere film reintroduced to the world Nick Sutton (in the role of Tummler), previously unseen since his appearance on the Sally Jessy Raphael episode “My Child Died From Sniffing Paint” and Linda Mantz back onscreen after 16 years as mother to Nick's friend, fellow entrepreneur, and occasional narrator Solomon. Layering of images and sound and little rooster goes cock-a-doodle-doo-doo-la-doo-la-doo and blurring the line between script and fiction and the lives of those the camera normally doesn't see and sure, sure, nothing new for trash like you. JULIEN DONKEY-BOY – Invited to make the first film in the U.S. under Dogme 95 rules (which it'd break and be the second American film to do so), Korine chose to induce schizophrenia in viewers through digital cameras, editing, and a titular character based on his uncle who would have been cast in the film but failed to receive institutional release. With blind ice skaters, armless drummer, and a cast of non-professional actors, this film in 2022 remains ranked in the Top 20 films of all times starring a Black albino straight from Alabama. Plus, Werner Herzog as Julien's father holds court at the dinner table, recounting a scene from Dirty Harry. Sit back with a brown paper bag of your favorite brand of huffing glue (or vintage cough syrup and house slipper if that's your poison) and enjoy the careening visual lyricism that is Harmony.(episode write-up by Thomas)THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

ART WORLD SPECIAL: How can an emerging artist approach a gallery? How does Blue Shop Cottage live up to its mantra of ‘Help Artists Grow'? What is it like ‘behind the scenes' at the gallery? Why is documenting your work as an artist so important? How can great design build the story of an artist?I spent a wonderful morning in the beautiful Blue Shop Cottage drinking tea and chatting to Founder Ocki Magill about the gallery's mantra of ‘Help Artists Grow'. Combining her passion for art and design with a genuine determination to support creative talent (all topped off with an incredible sense of fun), Ocki supports early career artists in many ways: hosting exhibitions in the gallery, running international residencies, shooting ‘in-process' videos, and using her design background to develop unique identities for each artist. Also mentioned in our conversation:Beautiful Losers (2008): youtu.be/ldAIy81l1CwPADA Residency: www.padastudios.comFollow Blue Shop Cottage @blueshopcottage____________________________________________Hosted and produced by Sophie Loxton Lucas, The Visible Artist podcast features individual artists and their paths to success within the creative world. A Strategy for the RightIn 1992 Murray Rothbard penned a blistering manifesto outlining a strategy for the right to take when Neoconservatism would inevitably fail. The NeoConservative Cancer that has served as an astroturfed Vassal State of FDR's New Deal for the better part of a century is dead. And The Managerial Complex that the New Deal has pampered having been subsidized by the most violent century in world history is scared. I highly recommend Jeff Deist and Ryan McMacken's discussion in the Human Action Podcast released on November 24, 2021 in which they discuss Garet Garrett's essay “The Revolution Was.” In the previous essay I read from Rothbard - his review of Sam Francis' Beautiful Losers, Rothbard mentioned the Garrett essay briefly, and I cannot recommend enough Jeff and Ryan's discussion of Garet Garrett because it helps put all the pieces together on why Garrett's essay should be the focal point on where not just The Right, but where America went wrong. In this essay I'm reading today, called A Strategy for The Right, which feels like it was written yesterday, not 1992 - Rothbard picks up where Garret Garrett left off, and gives us the inklings of where we can go next, if we will just cast off the rules of the game the Fraud FDR has imposed upon us. Buckle up. Because Ding Dong Bill Buckley is dead. LINKSFull Text of Murray Rothbard's Essay: https://mises.org/library/strategy-rightHuman Action Podcast “The Revolution Was” - https://mises.org/library/garet-garretts-revolution-was

As climate change-induced flooding and wildfires wreak havoc across the globe, and the Delta variant brings us into another perilous phase of the pandemic, the Jewish Currents staff is thinking about political depression—and how to cope with it. What does it mean to bring political feelings into therapy? Editor-in-chief Arielle Angel, publisher Jacob Plitman, culture editor Ari M. Brostoff, and contributing editor Joshua Leifer discuss the relationship between melancholia and the left, the difficulties of reconciling the therapeutic subject with the social collective of movement politics, and how therapy might be radicalized.
