It's a fun Halloween week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to our special guest JANE CLARK and her new film WITCHY WAYS; plus my exclusive interview with ROEL REINE discussing CLASSIFIED. Kicking off the show is my exclusive interview with director/DP/composer ROEL REINE disclosing all the secrets about making his new film, the action thriller CLASSIFIED starring Aaron Eckhart, Abigail Breslin and Tim Roth. Written by Bob DeRosa, the script is tight, the plot has some original elements in the hitman genre, first-rate performances, superb action, and the location of Malta is glorious. Then writer/director JANE CLARK joins me talking about her magically enchanting new film WITCHY WAYS! My regular readers and listeners may remember Jane from prior appearances on #BTLRadioShow talking about the fantastically fun and funny "Crazy Bitches", the movie and the tv series! I love WITCHY WAYS and Jane and I have the best conversation here as she breaks down her filmmaking process from script to screen with WITCHY WAYS – finding a shooting location, writing for the specific location, themes, research into the "witch community" and its customs, practices, and spells, casting, production logistics and overcoming the perils of Mother Nature, working with her cinematographer, score and needledrops, some lovely witchy visual effects, and so much more. A perfect way to welcome in Halloween! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

The concluding poem from Jane Clark Scharl's 2024 debut collection Ponds addresses the risk God takes in creating a world that can be almost mesmerizingly beautiful – a risk, Scharl writes, that “entices [us] to look / no further than” the world itself, to miss perceiving God through the radiance of what strikes our senses. We can make so much meaning in our lives by telling the stories that live within our bodies and within the land that we inhabit. In this conversation with author Jane Clark, we explore what it means to be what she calls a “story carrier,” and how telling our stories is a way to root ourselves firmly in the midst of collective change and capitalist pressures. About Jane: Jane Clark is an author, retired writing professor and former journalist who lives close to the land near the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. She leads writing workshops focused on giving life to our stories as a form of currency in a capitalistic system that defines us as workers/producers and separates us from ourselves. She loves to help writers bring their stories to life as a way to reclaim identity and agency as story carriers. Much of her work is an attempt to ground writers in the land, in nature, to help them see the stories that surround all of us, including those stories held in the land and beyond those told by this system. Today we speak with Harvard professor Robin Bernstein about her new book, Freeman's Challenge: The Murder that Shook America's Original Prison for Profit. While researching a book to develop her earlier interests in race and childhood, Bernstein came across the case of Afro-Indigenous teenager William Freeman, who in the late 19th century was convicted of stealing a horse and sentenced to five years in the federal prison in his home town, Auburn, New York. Forced to work for only nominal pay, beaten so much he lost the hearing in one ear, when released Freeman had the audacity to sue to recover lost wages. He stated repeatedly, “I am not going to work for nothing,” meaning both that he had not committed the crime he was convicted of, and that as a free man, he was not going to work for nothing. Bernstein's book quickly became about the intimately connected stories of Freeman and Auburn prison, about the ways the prison insinuated itself into the town's economy. So much so that any one who might testify against Freeman would likely be compromised by the way they benefitted financially from the prison. This remarkable study has everything to do with today's abolitionist movement, and Bernstein tells how, in the course of writing this book, she herself became an abolitionist. Robin Bernstein is the Dillon Professor of American History and Professor of African and African American Studies and of Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University. Her previous books include Racial Innocence: Performing American Childhood from Slavery to Civil Rights, which won five awards. Her new book, Freeman's Challenge: The Murder that Shook America's Original Prison for Profit, was written with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She has published in the New York Times, African American Review, Social Text, J19: The Journal of Nineteenth-Century Americanists, and many other venues. She recently published the forgotten 1897 slave narrative of Jane Clark, who liberated herself from slavery in Maryland by undergoing an arduous three-year journey that ended in Auburn, New York in 1859. The full text of the narrative, along with annotations and an introduction, was published in Commonplace.

Jane Clark Scharl discusses her play Sonnez les Matines, in which a young Ignatius of Loyola, Jean Calvin, and Francois Rabelais, together in 1520s Paris, find themselves implicated in a murder. Publisher's description (from Wiseblood Books): One Mardi Gras night in 1520s Paris, college students Jean Calvin (founder of Calvinism and autocratic ruler of Geneva), Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Counter-Reformation Catholic religious order, the Jesuits), and their bawdy friend Francois Rabelais (the humanist novelist) find themselves mixed up in a gruesome murder—and any one of them might be guilty. The ensuing investigation sparks a battle of wits and weapons, plunging them into questions of justice and mercy, grace and sin, innocence, guilt, love, and contempt. Before the bells ring in the start of Lent, they must confront the darkest parts of their souls and find the courage to pursue truth in a world that seems intent on obscuring it. Sonnez Les Matines imagines what might have happened if these three brilliant, volatile men had to put their convictions to the test while navigating a brutal crime and their own involvement in it. When left to his own devices, each character speaks in his own verse form, giving the play the feeling of a fierce sparring match between masters. Calvin's blank verse toys with despair as he wrestles with doubts about the goodness of God and the possibility of freedom; Ignatius commands situations in clipped iambic tetrameter, revealing his background as a disciplined soldier, while his passion for order shows through in frequent alliteration; and Rabelais dances around with iambic rhyming couplets, cracking profane, bawdy jokes that unexpectedly become profound meditations on the mysteries of God, creation, and grace. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Judge, author, litigator, wife, step-mom, mother of twins, and civic volunteer, are all words used to describe Debra Goldstein. Debra's life and writings are equally diverse. She's the author of the Sarah Blair mystery series (out by Kensington Press). The main character, Sarah, like her, is a cook of convenience who might be scorched if she gets too close to a kitchen. ABOUT THE BOOK - FIVE BELLES TOO MANY (Sarah Blair Mystery, Book 5) When Sarah Blair's mother participates in a reality show competition for brides in Wheaton, Alabama, things get a little too real as a murderer crashes the wedding party. Sometimes Sarah's mother, Maybelle, can be higher maintenance than her Siamese cat RahRah. Maybelle and her friend, Mr. George Rogers, have been chosen to be one of five couples competing for a small-town “perfect” wedding and dream honeymoon on a Southern Belles reality show—and guess who has to be chaperone. Even more vexing, the producers have decided to put up the crew and participants at the restaurant/bed and breakfast owned by Sarah's nemesis Jane Clark.

Nutritionist and Cordon Bleu chef, Jane Clark, joins Liz on the Liz Earle Wellbeing Show to discuss eating challenges, with a particular focus on dementia. While memory loss and confusion are the most well-known symptoms of this neurological disease, it can also negatively affect a person's ability and desire to eat. This is something Jane experienced first-hand when her father was diagnosed with the disease in 2006. Saddened to discover that most people with dementia are served puréed ‘brown mush', she set out to develop a different approach to the eating challenges these people faced. If they change your mind, and they can experience that, they’ll speak truth to you more.” Dr. Donna Lowry, President & CEO, Ready For School “The opposite of truth is not a lie.” Javier Olivera, CEO, Supermercado Mexico “For entrepreneurs, sometimes it is important to slow the business down so that it can be prepared for the next bigger or faster race.” Dr. Diana Wong, Associate Professor of Management, Eastern Michigan University “Leaders must learn to hold the space: The key to doing this is designing time to really listen to what people have to say, bring all the ideas together so people see the impact of their ideas on the plan, and the outcome is a team engaged and supporting the plan they spoke into.”
