Dangerous Dan Tucker would arrive in the southwest in the mid-1870s, pin on the badge of a Sheriff's Deputy, and, in a very short amount of time, tally up a body count surpassed only by the likes of John Wesley Hardin and Deacon Jim Miller. To quote historian Leon Metz, Tucker was a better lawman and more dangerous than high-profile figures like Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickok. But who was he really? Is it true that Dan Tucker once took out half a dozen of the Tombstone Cowboys in one fell swoop? And what about the stories of Doc Holliday giving Dan a wide berth due to his deadly reputation? FYI: The photo used in the thumbnail is NOT Dan Tucker. There are no known photos of Tucker. Pictured instead is disgraced Dodge City marshal Billy Brooks. Even though a Town Company had organized the small settlement in August 1872, the city was still unincorporated. The town had no elected or appointed officials. A county government had not yet been organized; consequently, there were no courts, jails, or official law enforcement in the region. The closest known law was located in Hays City, over 100 miles away. Initially, there was no law enforcement in the burgeoning settlement, and Dodge City quickly acquired its infamous stamp of lawlessness and gun slinging. As the many buffalo hunters, railroad workers, drifters, and soldiers streamed into the town after long excursions on the prairie; they quickly found the saloons and the inevitable fights that ensued. The men who set up the business decided they would hire protection, and when they did, they found Billy Brooks.  Wild West Podcast is proud to present The Return of Billy Brooks: The Lawman who Turned Bad.

Halloween in Dodge City is posted once a year during the month of October. The podcast tells the story of some of the characters who lived in Dodge City, Kansas, during the early frontier days. The story takes place on October 31, when a fictitious character named Luke McGlue visits a resting site known as Boot Hill. While waiting to administer the Kelly Cure, Luke visits and tells the stories of individual characters buried at Boot Hill. These long-lost souls include Lizzy Palmer, a local prostitute, McGill, who is tracked down and killed by James Hanrahn, and the shooting of Essington, a carpenter who built the first hotel in Dodge City. But the most infamous story told here is about Billy Brooks, the first unofficial marshal of Dodge City.  To learn more about the Luke McGlue stories you can visit The Machiavellian of Dodge City.

The Tale of Two Gunfights and One Crazy Mule is an authentic story base on the first-person account of Emanuel Dubbs. Emanuel Dubbs's story takes place on August 20, 1871, when he arrives in Newton, Kansas. The story opens when Dubbs and his wife enter town-witnessing excitement in the streets. Dubbs takes it upon himself to explore a recent Hyde Park gunfight between Mike McCluskie, a burly local man who had worked in Newton as a night watchman, and a Texan named Billy Bailey. Dubs and his wife do not stay long in Newton, and Dubbs takes a job grading track for the Santa Fe Railroad. Then, during the spring of 1872, Dubs traveled with Mr. Wiley to the Arkansas River. Mr. Wiley, a head contractor, and Dubbs were to scout out a location for a new supply depot. Dubbs riding on his favorite mule named Marie, travel up the line from Fort Larned over what was then known as the Dry Ridge trail. They came off the trail in sight of the beautiful Arkansas valley about two miles above where old Fort Dodge stood. Dubbs describes the panorama view just minutes before he charges down an embankment to shoot a buffalo. After completing his work for the railroad, Dubbs decides to take in buffalo hunting, and while in Dodge City, he encounters a lawless character by the name of Billy Brooks. During this encounter, he witnesses a revenge gunfight between two Berry brothers from Hayes City over the killing of their brother.

The closest known law was located in Hays City, over 100 miles away. From August 1872 to July 1873, there were approximately thirty killings in Dodge City. Dodge City's privately hired lawmen like Billy Brooks were not up to policing the settlement, and by February of 1873, a Vigilance Committee had to be created. Most of the business people that formed the Vigilance Committee brought in hired guns to protect their holdings. Within four months, the vigilance committee killed two men, ran five others out of town, and brought in a buffalo hunter named McGill who had been shooting up the town. Brooks was a shabby character sporting a narrow mustache with a long rounded face trimmed out with a Van Dyke goatee. Brooks roamed about the town in a dark cloth coat. He brandished two revolvers well insight of those he chose to intimidate. He wore a tall circular crowned black hat supported by a collarless linen shirt. This slipshod dress gave the appearance to everyone who regarded him as dangerous.

En la hora extra de antes sonaron: Deacon Blue, Swing Out Sister, Terence Trent D´Arby, The Christians, Los Lobos, Steve Earle & The Dukes, T´Pau, Julian Cope, Pastels, Dinosaur Jr, Wedding Present, Pixies y Go Betweens. In Part two, of the Emanuel Dubbs story takes you back to the late spring of 1872. Emanuel Dubbs with Mr. Wiley a head contractor scout out a location for a new supply depot. Dubbs riding on his favorite mule named Marie travel up the line from Fort Larned over what was then known as the Dry Ridge Trail. They came off the trail in sight of the beautiful Arkansas valley about two miles above where old Fort Dodge then stood. Dubbs describes the panorama view just minutes before he charges down an embankment to shoot a buffalo. Emanuel Dubbs has an encounter with Billy Brooks. Brooks was a shabby character sporting a narrow mustache with a long rounded face trimmed out with a Van Dyke goatee. The story you are about to hear is fictitious, but portions of the story are based on factual accounts. This is the story of a mischief-maker by the name of Luke McGlue. The Luke McGlue character transcends from the perceptiveness of his personality; the way this fictitious character might have perceived Dodge City through the realization of his times. In the mid-1800s, the people of Dodge had a legendary person in which they could blame all sorts of mayhem. His name was Luke McGlue. He was credited with many devious deeds. Many individuals within the community would pull a prank, then pass it off on another individual or on to a fictitious person by the name of Luke McGlue. The story takes place in 1877, a time when Dodge City Kansas was full of pranksters. In the story, Luke visits the Boot Hill resting grounds and meets up with a few unknown characters to administer the Keeley Cure.

In Part three Emanuel Dubbs has an encounter with Billy Brooks. Among the many lawless characters, who in the beginning drifted into Dodge City, was Billy Brooks. Brooks was a shabby character sporting a narrow mustache with a long rounded face trimmed out with a Van Dyke goatee. Brooks roamed about the town in a dark cloth coat. He brandished two revolvers well in sight of those he chose to intimidate. He wore a tall circular crowned black hat supported by a collarless linen shirt. This slipshod dress gave the appearance to everyone who regarded him as a dangerous.

The Boy They Called Bushead

They called him "Bushead", and he is no longer on death row. That's only because "Bushead" is no more. He died on Sunday, June 29, 2008, in the early evening, after a long and valiant struggle against the ravages of Hepatitis C, which had wreaked havoc on his liver. For those who have known him, they are undoubtedly sad at his passing, but as they remember him, perhaps they can't help but snicker, for "Bushead" was a man gifted with a priceless sense of humor. His jests and jokes were so keen, so sharp, that men often laughed until they cried, their sides gripped in delicious pain. On the prison rosters he was recorded as Billy Brooks, but he was born Larry Shavers on April 1, 1958. On the mean streets of Philadelphia, and throughout the meaner halls of state and county prisons, he was known simply as Bushead. Relatively short in height, of once stocky build, Bushead was, simply put, a hell raiser. He took no stuff from anyone, and would fight at the drop of a hat. His fiery temper would send him to Death Row in the '80's when he got into a conflict with a prisoner in Philadelphia county prison over a bathrobe. When they fought over possession of knife, he gained control, and he stabbed the other young man, which would've normally resulted in a voluntary manslaughter, or third degree homicide conviction, except the deceased was the son of a prominent state prison warden. The notoriety meant the State would seek and receive the death sentence against him. Stories about him abound from all who knew him. One fellow on Death Row recalled: "Once, me and Bushead was in the yard, and I was braiding his hair. A guard came out and said I had to stop doing this because it violated the rules. Bushead told the guard,'If you don't stop that dumb stuff, I'm gonna ball your old ass up!' Later, when we was at work, Bushead found a rule book, strolled into the office, and said, 'Find that rule in the rule book!' The Sgt. had to admit there wasn't such a rule -- and Bushead hollered, 'I told ya'll! I told ya'll!" That was Bushead; outspoken, loud, earthy, and wildly funny. When he was housed at the state prison in Pittsburgh, he participated in the Scared Straight program, and spoke to young people coming into the prison, deeply impressing upon them the emptiness and loss of imprisonment. He did all he could to convince them to avoid this fate. Bushead was 50 years old. He lived from the streets to the prison, a high octane, high energy, high volume life. His illness, which led to his long and tortuous suffering, was utterly debilitating. Hi memory among many prisoners, will evoke smiles, and hearty laughter, despite the manner of his passing.
