We've had a chance to talk with many instructional designers on IDIODC over the last 2 years. And most instructional designers are "ALL IN" on the trend in design thinking. But what if I told you the trend is actually not even a thing to be trending? This week we're talking with a UX/UI expert who specializes in improving the customer experience. She has a few strong opinions about design thinking and why it's not a thing. And if we look at our work as training professionals, we can see how building online eLearning experiences could benefit from a UX designers experience. Join us for what's sure to be a fun conversation about instructional design, customer experience, user experience, and design thinking. This is one episode you do not want to miss. Debbie Levitt, CXO of Delta CX, has been a CX and UX strategist, designer, and trainer since the 1990s. As a “serial contractor” who lived in the Bay Area for most of this decade, Debbie has influenced interfaces at Sony, Wells Fargo, Constant Contact, Macys.com, Oracle, and a variety of Silicon Valley startups. Clients have given her the nickname, “Mary Poppins,” because she flies in, improves everything she can, sings a few songs, and flies away to her next adventure. Debbie has presented at conferences including eBay’s Developer Conference, PayPal’s Developer Conference, UXPA, and WeAreDevelopers. She is an O’Reilly published author and one of few instructors on the planet recommended by Axure. Her “DevOps ICU” book and training teach non-CX roles about CX, why it’s done by specialists, and how to integrate it into teams and processes. Her “Delta CX” book and training teach companies how to improve customer satisfaction, predict and mitigate business risk, and increase ROI by investing in great customer experiences. Outside of CX work, and sometimes during CX work, Debbie enjoys singing symphonic prog goth metal, opera, and New Wave. With the average shelf life of an employee’s skills at less than five years, it is imperative that organizations support their employees in staying current in new and emerging skills and in learning how to learn. Learning management systems, once seen as a one-size-fits all learning solution, have not effectively kept pace with wider technology development, and the needs and expectations of workplace learning. Moreover, organizations tend to have too narrow a view when considering the elements that affect learning at their organization. The Rise of Informal Video-Based Learning With Chris Karel

Video-based learning is on the rise... and has been since the launch of YouTube in 2005. Mobile devices, apps, and social media, are some of the drivers behind this trend. It's a tech trend in businesses with cautiously curious executives wondering how to use it as a competitive advantage. There are many opportunities for training departments. But there are also legal and IT concerns. And despite the fact that's video is cheaper than ever to produce and deliver, there are still concerns over hidden costs of file storage and internal bandwidth costs. The good news is that all of the concerns associated with video-based learning can be solved. As an industry our first step is to learn how we can keep our video production skills current with these modern capabilities. Join us for a conversation on this weeks live eLearning podcast with Chris Karel who has been creating video-based learning for many years and now runs his own video learning company. Hang out with us and bring your questions...and a cup of coffee. "Ever since I used a popcorn bucket to defend the galaxy against the dark side of the Force,¹ I’ve been obsessed with visual storytelling. Cartoons, sitcoms, dramas, and even the commercials brought me joy. Then I found interactive storytelling. I used joysticks and direction pads to discover plot twists and adrenaline-fueled battles. Movies, TV, videogames, I couldn’t get enough, but my heart was drawn to the lifestyle of the teacher. I wanted to learn the ways of my father. I chose education over communications and earned my way to Master Teacher. Leading teams of teachers, parents, and of course padawans,² I furthered my quest. I learned that many of the “truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.”³ My POV changed. Returning to the ways of the Jedi, I chose to embody the adage: “Do or do not, there is no try.” ⁴ I became a Digital Storyteller. Writing, producing, shooting, and editing, I found my Road Back.⁵ After sharpening my skills to a position of leadership, it was time to leap. Today, my passion is finding ways to help people learn how to use video for learning purposes. Story is the Force. I use Story to improve knowledge, teach skills, affect behavior, and occasionally entertain. Send an email to chris@learningcarton.com and we can add to each other's quest. References 1. You've probably heard about Learning Experience Platforms but have you ever thought about being a learning experience designer? It's not a new term or title, but we often blend conversations about experience design into instructional design. Perhaps it's time we talk about it as something different. Instructional design served us well for over 50 years and perhaps it should be replaced by Learning Experience Design. None of us have all the answers, but it's going to be a fun conversation to have with Jeff Tillett. Jeff is experienced with technology, and solving business problems through the training function within the Fortune 500. But don't ask him about instructional design because he's having more success being a Learning Experience Designer. We'll be talking with Jeff about how he defines Learning experience design and how thinking differently helped him transition training programs from old traditional methods to new learning experiences that support the modern worker. "I am a native of the Pacific Northwest and grew up in central Washington. As a young man, I worked on orchards and farms around the Yakima Valley. I learned to work hard and cultivated my “maker” skills set. In high school I explored architecture, fine arts, audio engineering. I also earned a certificate in Radio and TV Broadcasting. I am an Instructional Designer, Learning Experience Designer. I have a background in graphic design, media development and production. I have worked with computers and Internet technologies for over 20 years; a survivor of the Internet boom, I assisted many startups in successfully building business and eCommerce ventures. In the late 90’s my focus turned to interactive content for learning when I was part of a distance-learning Internet start-up. Since then I have worked for various companies as an interactive developer and Instructional Designer, including Adobe, T-Mobile USA, Microsoft, Entirenet, Float Mobile Learning, Apple. Most recently, I helped Amazon Machine Learning University move from classroom only to a blended model in order to scale their program. I help organizations leverage video, interactive media and mobile technology to create high performance engaging learning." - Jeff Tillett Jeff: @MojoTillett https://twitter.com/mojotillett?lang=en Brent: @BSchlenker https://twitter.com/bschlenker Chris: @Chris_V_W https://twitter.com/Chris_V_W IDIODC: @TeamIDIODC https://twitter.com/TeamIDIODC Brent Schlenker is dominKnow's Community Manager. With so many courses being created on a regular basis, and so few of them showing much level of improvement, how do we make a better learning mouse trap? Communities! People learn best when they are connecting with other people. And in the standard models of instructional design we typically leave participants on their own after the training event has occurred. But when we know that learning is a long-term process, why don't we do more to support that? Well... now we can. This week on IDIODC we'll be talking with Shannon Tipton who regularly engages the students who take her courses with a slack group for collaborative engagement before, during, and after the main training events. This idea isn't new, but executing it successfully certainly is. Join us and hear how Shannon has successfully integrated communities into her learning designs. We can't wait to start off September with a conversation over a much needed cup of coffee with just us learning folk. Reminder for season 3, if you want to catch us live on Crowdcast.com, we will now be airing at 10am ET. Don't miss us! https://www.crowdcast.io/dominknow For this first episode of IDIODC Season 3, we will be talking with the ever so intelligent, Anna Leach! There are very few data analysts who understand instructional design, or care about it for that matter. As we all hear about the coming tsunami of data via xAPI and other technologies, we need to figure out how to use it. More importantly, we need to understand why it's important to gather data and plan how we will use it to improve the learning solutions we provide. We'll have a great conversation with Anna about her journey and what she's learned while blending the fields of Learning Technologies and Data Analytics. Anna is a PhD student and graduate teaching associate at the School of Information at the University of Arizona. The iSchool focuses on the intersection of people, technology, and information. Her studies are focused educational technology and the information it produces or consumes and how it can or does impact humans. She is working to understand the value of the data collected and how it can empower learners and elevate learning. She is researching what data is collected in our LMSes (and other learning tools), how much we understand about data privacy, and how we interpret this data for assessment. Prior to the PhD program, Anna worked as a data analyst at the Ohio State University. She also completed her Masters in Learning Technologies in the Fall of 2017 through the Ohio State University online program. She has discussed her data analysis journey in a TEDxPSU talk titled Beyond the Numbers: A Data Analyst Journey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2oOFs4WgI0&feature=youtu.be In her free time, she spends time with her family and pug Skully or hiking or crocheting. The Beatles said it best. We get by with a little help from our friends. Or something like that. And it’s true. We learn more and become more productive when we’re with other people, especially our friends and trusted colleagues. However, bringing a group together for an impactful conversation with meaningful outcomes does not happen by accident. We used to solve this problem with single events. The newer, more successful approach is long term, connected groups, communicating virtually and in periodic group gatherings. It’s a cohort of professionals supporting each other in the long term process of learning, and behaviour change. While Brent is away this week, Megan Torrance is joining Chris to talk about the power of learning with your friends. You may know Megan from her years of experience running the xAPI Cohort, or her past episodes on IDIODC. In this conversation we’ll talk with Megan about how the cohort framework can be applied in so many different corporate situations as a comprehensive learning and development solution. Megan Torrance is CEO and founder of TorranceLearning, which helps organizations connect learning strategy to design, development, data and ultimately performance. Megan has over 25 years of experience in learning design, deployment and consulting. Megan and the TorranceLearning team are passionate about sharing what works in learning so they devote considerable time to teaching and sharing about Agile project management for learning experience design and, of course, the xAPI. TorranceLearning hosts the xAPI Learning Cohort, a free, virtual 12-week learning-by-doing opportunity where teams form on the fly and create proof-of-concept xAPI projects. Megan is the author of The Quick Guide to LLAMA, and two ATD TD at Work publications: Agile and LLAMA® for ISD Project Management and Making Sense of xAPI. She is a frequent speaker at conferences nationwide. TorranceLearning projects have won several Brandon Hall Group awards, the 2014 xAPI Hyperdrive contest at DevLearn, and back-to-back eLearning Guild DemoFest Best-In-Show awards in 2016/2017 with xAPI projects. Let’s admit it: most learning is a total failure! The sad reality is that most courses require learners to sit through a disappointing experience, where information is poorly organized, the content isn’t relevant, and the interactions seem contrived and without purpose. This is compounded even more when the slideshow-like presentation is interrupted with several poorly-written quiz questions and cheesy animations to make it all seem “fun.” In this IDIODC session, Brent and Chris bring on the one and only Tim Slade to talk about revamping ineffective eLearning! During this cast you will explore many of the reasons why most learning fails and the components that contribute to bad learning design. At the end of this session, you will walk away with several practical methods you can immediately apply to design learning that delivers results. Tim Slade is a Speaker, Author & Award-Winning Freelance eLearning Designer. Having spent the last decade working to help others elevate their eLearning and visual communications content, Tim has been recognized and awarded within the eLearning industry multiple times for his creative and innovative design aesthetics. Analyze need, identify objectives, curate content and then what? Design and develop the course? No! Try thinking about the design through the lens of a game designer. A gamified event or a serious game. This allows you to think about the behaviour changes that you want them (learners, employees, managers, etc) to realize by looking at: Game goal Mechanics Actions and Resources Failure and winning Whether you want to nudge behaviour changes by rewarding daily actions, encourage completion of a task, or reward for daily practice just by applying gamification elements, you can discover key components about the topic that you may have missed. Game thinking is the litmus test to whether you have fully considered and included all of the necessary content. Deborah Thomas is the President, Owner and Senior Consultant at SillyMonkey LLC. The training industry has a legacy of creating events that take learners out of the context of their work. Over the years new technologies have disrupted that model. We now have the tools to educate and support learners while they work. Workflow Learning is a relatively new concept but has it's roots in performance support. There is also a significant element of microlearning in the mix. All of these concepts have come together as a new comprehensive solution that improves business outcomes. And that is why businesses are asking for it. This week Brent and Chris bring back returning guest Shannon Tipton for her second appearance on the show! We'll be talking about workflow learning and how it works. She'll go over some of her tips and tricks and examples of success stories using workflow learning. Shannon Tipton is CLO of Learning Rebels, an organization focused on improving business L&D through unique blended and microlearning training designs. She also is the author of her book "Disruptive Learning: Discover Your Inner Learning Rebel".
