In this captivating second act with Mike Sweeney, I was treated to a treasure trove of hard-earned wisdom. Mike's journey from Army officer to corporate leader, and through the choppy waters of divorce and fatherhood, is nothing short of remarkable. I couldn't help but chuckle as he recounted how a forklift driver's casual "Oh well" became a pivotal moment in his leadership philosophy. It's fascinating how Mike evolved from a command-and-conquer approach to one of connection and inspiration, showcasing the power of emotional intelligence in both professional and personal spheres. As we delved into his experiences with divorce and co-parenting, I was struck by Mike's candid reflections on balancing societal expectations with personal growth. Our conversation was a rich exploration of leadership, fatherhood, and self-discovery that left me pondering the importance of embracing both masculine and feminine energies. Mike's parting wisdom? Sometimes, when life throws you a curveball, it's okay to just say "Oh well" and roll with it.Bio by Mike: In my career, I've applied my love of learning to coaching leaders, accelerating organizational change, and building high performing teams – often through digital learning. I enjoy the challenge of new industries so I can discover techniques that work everywhere.• Digital learning – I started with flip phone videos to help employees make label changes easier. This grew to personalized learning experience platforms, virtual facilitation, social learning, xAPI learning analytics, and content development in eLearning, video, simulation, and all the fun formats.• Coaching leaders – I've developed coaching skills through a Master's in organizational psychology, courses on positive psychology and appreciative inquiry, and the full curriculum from the Co-Active Training Institute. Nothing thrills me more than supporting people as they learn the craft of leadership. • Accelerating organizational change – I have experience leading large transformational change efforts – mixing new technology with behavior change. After years of studying change, I've found ways to weave the people side of change into projects. The outcomes have been higher engagement, faster change, and better results.• Building high performing teams – Working with a diverse group of people is where the magic happens. I know my strengths (and where I'm less good) and look for complementary all-stars to do great work together. My point of view on teams has evolved, but elements I learned as a platoon leader in the U.S. Cavalry still resonate – leader as servant, aligned ambition, and mutual respect.Outside of work, I learn from my three wonderful daughters, get outside to stay centered, and run often. I am enjoying watching my two oldest daughters run XC without being too involved. As a certified distance running coach, I often bite my lip. I ride the PMC to raise money for cancer research. Today I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Mike Sweeney, a Boston-born "country mouse," Army veteran, and father. Our conversation traced Mike's remarkable journey from an emotionally limited young man to a more self-aware adult. We explored his privileged yet conflicted childhood, delved into his transformative military experience, and discussed the profound impact fatherhood has had on his life and perspective. Mike's story illuminates the challenges and rewards of emotional growth, leadership, and finding purpose; from learning hard lessons in the Army to discovering new depths of empathy as a father to daughters, Mike's experiences offer valuable insights for any man grappling with personal development. Mike's ability to blend raw honesty, practical wisdom, and thought-provoking reflection is a powerful one, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Looking forward to Act 2, Mike!Bio by Mike: In my career, I've applied my love of learning to coaching leaders, accelerating organizational change, and building high performing teams – often through digital learning. As a concept, spaced repetition has been around for decades. Yet in many organisations, learning is seen in terms of one-off interventions, delivered through a classroom or an LMS. In this week's episode of The Mind Tools L&D Podcast, Ross D and Gemma are joined by Sarah Mercier, CEO of Learning Ninjas, to discuss: what spaced learning is, and how to design for it what good spaced practice looks like the technological boundaries to implementing spaced learning Show notes When speaking about her project with the US military, Sarah mentioned xAPI. If you're interested in learning more about xAPI, we covered it in episodes 102 and 113. Just because you have an instructional design degree doesn't mean you're limited to only working in training teams. The growing number of Software as a Service companies in recent years has placed Customer Experience teams above the standard training department. You might ask, but how could any department be more important than the training department? It's a long story, but here's the short version: Customer Experience directly impacts the company's bottom line. Internal training is important, but without customers there is no need for employees to be trained. But do not despair. Your ID knowledge and skills are useful and, as it happens, necessary. Onboarding new customers is the new "onboarding". It's different than onboarding new employees however both require learning. In this episode, we have the unique opportunity to talk with one of our own, Mel Milloway, who has decided to make the leap out of training into the world of CX. Mel is a former guest on IDIODC and you all have certainly come to know her through LinkedIn, other social media, and presenting at industry conferences. We'll talk with Mel about the transition and why she's doing it. But we'll also talk about the similarities between internal ID work and CX work. If you're also at a crossroads in your career, then you should join us and open up your options for your next career move. Mel is a Manager of Learning Experience Design at Miro in the space of Customer Education. Ex Amazon, JLL, and J&J. She's an avid blogger in the learning industry. Instructional designers and eLearning developers know SCORM has a ton of limitations. We are unable to know what exactly the learner is actually doing and interacting with in a course. xAPI has long been hailed as the next big thing to help pick up where SCORM leaves off. So to learn more about it, I chatted with Jeffrey Riley of Practical Learning Concepts to learn more about how he learned xAPI and the value it brings to instructional design. Understanding the basics of xAPI is a hurdle most instructional designers have already crossed over the last few years. We've all been waiting to see xAPI in action. Theory is great but seeing what new innovations can do changes minds and gets projects approved. If you've still been waiting to SEE it before you can believe it then this episode is the day we make that happen for you. Duncan Welder has been building xAPI solutions for a very long time and joins us to share a few examples of "xAPI in the wild".We'll look at a few examples:Tracking the Mastery of ObjectivesMicrolearning/Spaced RepetitionxAPI in Games and SimulationsAdaptive LearningVisualizations for L&DWe hope this conversation will also give you some inspiration to finally jump into the world of xAPI and begin building xAPI-enabled learning solutions.Duncan Welder is a Director of Client Services for RISC. He is an educational technology geek having spent over 20 years designing and implementing learning management systems, domestically and abroad, to manage regulatory compliance. №31 Julian Davis, Digital Learning SolutionsTell me if this is familiar to you: Your organization adopts a piece of tech, usually a learning app, with excitement and optimisms. Then they realize it might need more attention than anybody at your team has, and it slowly fades out of everyone's priorities. As a result, the elearning becomes orphaned. My guest today is Julian Davis. He describes himself as a Learning Solutions Architect, although in the story he's about to tell you, you might want to think of people like him as “EdTech Foster Parent.” This time we have for you a case study, that's actually the basis for an article Julian wrote called “Soufflé out of mud.” In the article, and this conversation, he sets the scene and walk us through the ways we turned a discouraging technology setup into a “wowing” solution for his client. In this exciting conversation we talk about:
Jumping into xAPI for the first time can seem daunting. Almost as daunting as learning to become an eLearning game designer. As luck would have it, we've found an eLearning game designer who recently took the plunge into the wonderful world of xAPI and used his knowledge of game design and blend the two as a learning opportunity. Jeffrey Riley is one of the hundreds of xAPI cohort attendees who decided to no longer lurk and learn, but to jump in with both feet and learn about xAPI by creating a project that connected with his love of game design. He learned all about the xAPI standard, and how to write statements without knowing any code at all. And going through the process he learned more about how to use an LRS and connect it to his LMS. And learning about the data analysis was an added bonus.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on twitter. The eLearning industry has had mobile learning, or mLearning, for well over 15 years now. Wow! Has it really been that long? Yep. So, are you creating mLearning? Have you moved to a mobile first methodology? What about your SCORM packages in your LMS are they mobile ready? And don't forget about xAPI... Aaahhh.... It can all feel a little overwhelming. But thankfully we have Robert Gadd with us on this episode of IDIODC. He's going to help us clear the air, and make sense out of the confusion. As one of the earliest proponents of mLearning, Robert has seen it all. He's developed many, many mLearning solutions and understands the frustration instructional designers have. When we're done, you'll have a much better idea of how to proceed with mLearning in your organization. And we'll sort out the big question: SCORM? xAPI? or both? Robert is an experienced technologist with demonstrable experience designing, developing and leveraging next generation technologies while building successful companies. Are you looking to venture into the xAPI, but don’t know where to start? Are you all thumbs when it comes to code? It may seem simple but for Andrew McGuire a journey with xAPI started by building the most basic of elements. Andrew is excited to share with you the details about how he found a simple (not easy) way to learn how to use xAPI. Andrew began working at his current position thinking xAPI as a nothing more than a replacement to SCORM. He had also done little more than edit code. Then he found an article on how to send statements to an LRS from a basic webpage. Through many failures, he focused on getting the core elements working and then adding on to that. In this way, he was able to implement a webpage utilization tracker with xAPI that fit his company’s business needs. Since then, he has been able to lead an effort that got xAPI implemented into an enterprise-wide performance support utilization tracking solution. This was done by developing iterative prototypes that added value, researching existing resources, and getting plugged into an active L&D network. What is xAPI? How do you send data? What data do you send? And where do you send it? How do you keep it all organized? As we move further toward a "data-centric" world, collecting, analyzing, and managing data has become a top priority among successful organizations. And in L&D, xAPI has risen to forefront of the tools for processing data. Megan Torrance is one of Learning & Development's premier experts on xAPI. And in this Data, Measurement, and Analytics Playlist episode, she offers an informative overview of what xAPI is, how you use it, why it's important, and guidance on how to get started. You can learn more about the Data, Measurement, and Analytics Playlist here: https://tldc.us/dma-playlist/.

Welcome back friends to the first episode of IDIODC back from summer vacation! We gotta say, we missed you guys. We can't wait to start off September with a conversation over a much needed cup of coffee with just us learning folk. Reminder for season 3, if you want to catch us live on Crowdcast.com, we will now be airing at 10am ET. Don't miss us! https://www.crowdcast.io/dominknow For this first episode of IDIODC Season 3, we will be talking with the ever so intelligent, Anna Leach! There are very few data analysts who understand instructional design, or care about it for that matter. As we all hear about the coming tsunami of data via xAPI and other technologies, we need to figure out how to use it. More importantly, we need to understand why it's important to gather data and plan how we will use it to improve the learning solutions we provide. We'll have a great conversation with Anna about her journey and what she's learned while blending the fields of Learning Technologies and Data Analytics. Anna is a PhD student and graduate teaching associate at the School of Information at the University of Arizona. The iSchool focuses on the intersection of people, technology, and information. Her studies are focused educational technology and the information it produces or consumes and how it can or does impact humans. She is working to understand the value of the data collected and how it can empower learners and elevate learning. She is researching what data is collected in our LMSes (and other learning tools), how much we understand about data privacy, and how we interpret this data for assessment. Prior to the PhD program, Anna worked as a data analyst at the Ohio State University. She also completed her Masters in Learning Technologies in the Fall of 2017 through the Ohio State University online program. She has discussed her data analysis journey in a TEDxPSU talk titled Beyond the Numbers: A Data Analyst Journey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2oOFs4WgI0&feature=youtu.be In her free time, she spends time with her family and pug Skully or hiking or crocheting. The Beatles said it best. We get by with a little help from our friends. Or something like that. And it’s true. We learn more and become more productive when we’re with other people, especially our friends and trusted colleagues. However, bringing a group together for an impactful conversation with meaningful outcomes does not happen by accident. We used to solve this problem with single events. The newer, more successful approach is long term, connected groups, communicating virtually and in periodic group gatherings. It’s a cohort of professionals supporting each other in the long term process of learning, and behaviour change. While Brent is away this week, Megan Torrance is joining Chris to talk about the power of learning with your friends. You may know Megan from her years of experience running the xAPI Cohort, or her past episodes on IDIODC. In this conversation we’ll talk with Megan about how the cohort framework can be applied in so many different corporate situations as a comprehensive learning and development solution. Megan Torrance is CEO and founder of TorranceLearning, which helps organizations connect learning strategy to design, development, data and ultimately performance. Megan has over 25 years of experience in learning design, deployment and consulting. Megan and the TorranceLearning team are passionate about sharing what works in learning so they devote considerable time to teaching and sharing about Agile project management for learning experience design and, of course, the xAPI. TorranceLearning hosts the xAPI Learning Cohort, a free, virtual 12-week learning-by-doing opportunity where teams form on the fly and create proof-of-concept xAPI projects. Megan is the author of The Quick Guide to LLAMA, and two ATD TD at Work publications: Agile and LLAMA® for ISD Project Management and Making Sense of xAPI. She is a frequent speaker at conferences nationwide. TorranceLearning projects have won several Brandon Hall Group awards, the 2014 xAPI Hyperdrive contest at DevLearn, and back-to-back eLearning Guild DemoFest Best-In-Show awards in 2016/2017 with xAPI projects. This week, Brent Schlenker and Chris Van Wingerden bring on special guest, master of xAPI from RISC, Duncan Welder to chat xAPI applications. - xAPI is a step in the right direction for learning technologies. But many struggle with identifying a good use case within their business to justify the upgrade in their systems. On this episode we talk with Duncan Welder live about how xAPI can support and track spaced repetition. And if you're new to the idea of spaced repetition, we'll get you up to speed on that as well. Since spaced repetition is most effective with short bursts of content, we're certain we'll be making the connection to the latest trend in micro-learning as well. It's going to be an eye-opening episode with real world application for you and your eLearning team. Join us, live from Learning Solutions! Duncan Welder is a director of client services for RISC. He is an educational technology geek, having spent over 20 years implementing learning management systems, domestically and abroad, to manage regulatory compliance. Ben Betts from HT2 Labs is back on the podcast in this interview. Ben is passionate about using social learning to build high-impact learning experiences. HT2 Labs are also the people behind Learning Locker, which is an open source learning record store for xAPI data. At the Learning While Working conference, Ben talked about the work that HT2 Labs have been doing on how they are measuring social learning. The recording of that conference session goes into more depth on that work than this podcast does, so if you’re interested in what Ben is doing I encourage you to watch that recording. The work HT2 Labs is doing is built around a series of machine learning methods that are called ‘natural language processing’, which I think of as a series of methods that look for patterns in language. It’s maybe the most complex area of machine learning. The podcast starts by exploring data, AI, and automation in L&D, then moves into using natural language processing and measuring social learning data. To go along with the podcast series we have released an eBook with all transcripts of the interviews. To go along with the podcast series on How artificial intelligence is changing the way L&D is working, we have released an eBook with all transcripts of the interviews. The eBook also gives a brief explanation of what AI is and an overview of how it is being used in L&D. How are companies building learning management systems to train their employees? xAPI and SCORM help companies design eLearning courses for their employees so that they can do their best work on the job. In this episode, Mike Rustici, CEO Watershed LRS spoke with Zack Parnell, President of ITI to discuss how Mike came up with the idea of xAPI and innovated with SCORM. Wastershed LRS is trying to change the face of corporate learning by introducing the concept of learning analytics, and the concept of using data to drive the culture of continuous improvement within companies.
In our second visit to the land of xAPI, Ross G and Jonny from the GoodPractice team are joined by experts from overseas. Instructional Designers In Offices Drinking Coffee In this episode, Brent and Chris chat with the one and only Megan Torrance from TorranceLearning. With the xAPI Fall Cohort just getting kicked off, the three go over the ABC's of xAPI and get you a full scoop of what the xAPI Cohort is all about. (Don't need to read anymore on xAPI Fall Cohort and want to get started ASAP? Well, here's the link! https://www.torrancelearning.com/xapi-cohort/ ) The xAPI Learning Cohort is a free, vendor-neutral, 12-week learning-by-doing project-based team learning experience about the Experience API. (Yep, you read that right – free!) It’s an opportunity for those who are brand new to xAPI and those who are looking to experiment with it to learn from each other and from the work itself. Participants form teams based on shared interests and work together on an xAPI project. Each cohort features some predefined projects so you can jump right into something that sounds interesting and of course you can come with your own project idea and gather a team around you to get moving (or bring your team!). Past projects have included an onboarding checklist that leverages the Internet of Things (IoT), a game that tracks user clicks as a way to identify UX gaps, and exploration of LMS-LRS interoperability. xAPI Learning Cohorts run twice a year in spring and fall “semesters” with weekly all-group web meetings on Thursdays 2pm US Eastern Time chock-full of introductory information, practical how-tos, and high-level discussions of the implications for our industry. Teams work on real-life projects that interest them and set their own meeting and working schedules. Oh, and it’s ok to just hang out on the sidelines and observe the action if taking on a team project is too much right now. It’s also ok to participate on more than one project team during a Cohort session. Megan Torrance is CEO and founder of TorranceLearning, which helps organizations connect learning strategy to design, development, data and ultimately performance. Learning data - it's a huge topic. How do you collect and use information generated by the employees/students taking your courses? There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to collecting and using learning data, but in today's episode we talk about some things to consider. You may be wondering how motorcycles and learning data connect - listen in today as my guest Anthony Altieri talks us through this burning question. Anthony is a proud IDIoT - instructional developer for the Internet of Things, xAPI enthusiast, LMS guy and all round tech geek - so you know I enjoyed talking with him. More bio to be updated shortly. During our conversation, a major thunder storm rolled through and interrupted our conversation, but we rescued it and were able to finish up. Good think I had my Monk's Prayer tea to keep me calm, cool and collected! (Did I mention it is delicious? Are you hearing buzz about the Tin Can API and wondering what it is and what it can do? Do you want to spread your wings and take advantage of modern technologies? In this episode, Megan Bowe demystifies the Tin Can API (a.k.a. Experience API or xAPI) and discusses its potential for advancing the learning environment. Megan's knack for explaining the Experience API helped it become the most successful and most quickly adopted learning technology innovation in the last thirty years. She worked hand-in-hand with innovators and early adopters implementing the specification at Rustici Software, teaciing others and designing products, early content and application prototypes. In many ways, Megan invented much of what the emerging community of practice advocates around this learning technology. She continues the charge today at Making Better. WE DISCUSS: How SCORM started and it's limitations What the xAPI offers to designers and learners What an API is and what it does The beauty of the Learning Record Store (LRS) Systems that can create and use xAPI data Using xAPI for tracking and sharing your own learning or for creating a portfolio Innovating with Learning Locker Use cases for xAPI (getting insights in so different ways) How to combine Tin Can and Open Badges The big picture view Getting started with xAPI TIME: 33 minutes RATE: Rate this podcast in iTunes TRANSCRIPT: Download the [Download not found] RESOURCES: Making Better (Megan's website) xAPI Overview IEEE Working Group on xAPI Research Report: The Experience API Learning Locker Curatr Rustici Software SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS: Share your thoughts about xAPI in Comments below.
