Phil and Emily bring in writer Lindsey Romain for the fourth installment of the Angelina Jolie action films miniseries, and it is the one LaToya Ferguson was promised. Lindsey's work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Vulture, and Bright Wall/Dark Room, and she saw this movie four times in theaters as a teenager. She still has the promotional pin from when she worked at a movie theater in high school. She is the right person for this.Mr. and Mrs. Smith follows two upper-class assassins who are also, it turns out, married to each other and working for rival agencies. It opened June 10th, 2005 against Madagascar, Star Wars Episode III, The Longest Yard, and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D, and made $487 million on a $110 million budget. The script originated as Simon Kinberg's graduate thesis. Carrie Fisher, Akiva Goldsman, Jez and John Henry Butterworth, Ted Griffin, and Terrence Winter all took passes at it. Angela Bassett and Keith David filmed scenes that were cut entirely. What remained was Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, which Roger Ebert correctly identified as the only thing that needed to remain.The conversation covers the Doug Liman of it all, specifically his "we'll make it up as we go along" approach and what that costs the film in its final act. Emily identifies the half hour from when they can't kill each other through the home improvement store sequence as the movie locking in completely, and the final action sequence as where it loses her. Phil compares the last scene to Eyes Wide Shut. Drop Dead Fred has an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics absolutely hated it. But it's really good! Seriously. Let Matt and Laci tell you all about it... ...for the second time. That's right, it's time to return to a movie we've covered already. The first time was nearly a decade ago, on the tenth episode of this podcast. Back then, the show was called Load Bearing Beams and it came out every 73 days. We've gotten more consistent since then. Back then we were stunned at how sweet, funny, and insightful Drop Dead Fred is... and it still is! It's nice when that happens. Before diving into an in-depth discussion of the movie, we go through its production history, and then look at the careers of stars Rik Mayall and Phoebe Cates. The Rik Mayall portion shows us how badly we need a Britain Correspondent (email us!) to understand television over there. Then, while going through Phoebe Cates's career, we saw some, uh, interesting stuff that may have informed her performance as a woman who's spent her life being handed from controlling adult to controlling adult. There are many reasons to watch movies. We watch them to learn, to laugh, to cheer, jeer, and fear. One of the most wonderful things about film is that they allow us to escape reality, if only for a couple of hours. Like many of you I have a long list of “feel good” films I put on when times are bleak and I want to escape. The Private Eyes was part of the resurgence of “darl house” movies we saw in the 1970s and 1980s that included Murder by Death, Clue, and Haunted Honeymoon. Next is 1981's Under the Rainbow, a film that did terribly at the box office but found a second life on cable television. When a German spy (who happens to be a little person) and a Japanese spy (disguised as a tourist) make plans to exchange secrets at a hotel, they never could have predicted that the location would be overrun by all the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz along with an entire busload of Japanese tourists! Chevy Chase once called this film “the worst film ever made” while Carrie Fisher simply said it was “the worst film I ever made.” They can say what they want; this slapstick comedy always puts a smile on my face.In 1989's Loveryboy, Randy picks up a job delivering pizza while serving extra anchovies and a slice of love to a growing list of female customers. As someone who delivered pizzas in college I can tell you all of us dreamed that someday we wold get a delivery for “extra anchovies.” Loverboy was one of four films Patrick Dempsey starred in during the 1980s and 1990s before going on to become “McDreamy” later on Gray's Anatomy. Featuring Carrie Fisher, Kirstie Alley, and lots and lots of anchovies.Our final film this week is 1986's Back to School. When millionaure Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield) discovers his son Jason has lost interest in college, he agrees to enroll himself so that the two of them can become freshmen together. Thornton gets accepted into college after making a large donation, sends his personal secretary to classes for him to take notes, has a staff of employees doing his homework and spends most of his nights partying. Both father and son eventually learn that money can't buy everything — not pride, respect, or love.What are your favorite “feel good” movies?
