When you purchase an item after clicking a link from this post, we may earn a commission.Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Ken: One of the things I've learned is that I work well with entrepreneurs. I've been a five-time entrepreneur myself, but I've also enjoyed working with other entrepreneurs.“We're the oldest, and we believe also the largest business accelerator in the clean tech climate space,” says Ken Hayes, executive director of Cleantech Open.Cleantech Open was created to help climate and environmentally-focused entrepreneurs get support, attention and financing they weren't receiving in the marketplace. The goal was to help these entrepreneurs build successful businesses. “If a business is not successful commercially, it won't also be able to succeed in the environmental realm,” Ken says.Over 1,900 companies have gone through the Cleantech accelerator.“We work with about 100 companies a year. We match them to business mentors. So we have over 1000 volunteers,” he says. “These are business people that volunteer their time. So, we're one big community working together to try to help these entrepreneurs become successful.”From each cohort, the team chooses a grand prize winner. Ken emphasizes the experience that all the participants receive over the four to five-month curriculum. They all benefit. The winner of the last cohort was Renegade Plascis, which is producing an environmentally friendly alternative to PVC-coated fabrics. “Our low-carbon coated fabrics curtail plastic waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” the website says. “They have a high UV, thermal and chemical resistance and do not contain any PVC, heavy metals, PFAS or phthalates.”The accelerator works with companies in eight categories:* Energy generation, * Energy storage, * Energy efficiency, * Information and communications technologies* Transportation,* Green building * Agriculture, water and waste* Chemicals and advanced materialsCleantech Open is also concerned with climate and environmental justice. Ken says:We all have the right to have fresh air, fresh water, clean, clean air. A lot of the companies that are going through Cleantech Open are targeting these communities in order to improve them, make sure that their technologies are not just for wealthy people or wealthy homes but can be used in many different situations and can become affordable and available to people of all backgrounds and all communities.Over his career, Ken has developed a superpower working to support entrepreneurs. How to Develop Working With Entrepreneurs As a SuperpowerOne key to Ken's success in building this superpower was the decision to develop it. “I've wanted to expand the scale of my impact in a positive way,” Ken says.“What I'm good at is starting small companies, getting them to about 20 people and selling them,” he says. “I wanted to figure out how I could leverage that skill to help others become successful.”“When you have your own startup, you're only impacting yourself and your direct colleagues, and all of your eggs are in one basket,” Ken notes. As an angel investor, he learned he could help more people but limited resources constrained his impact. He co-founded a venture capital fund called Canyon Creek Fund II. That increased the breadth of his impact with funds from limited partners, allowing it to invest in 40 companies.“Still, I thought there was an opportunity to do more,” he says. “I was approached by the leaders from Cleantech Open to join Cleantech Open. Here it was! Wow! We have 100 to 150 companies a year.”“I'm a catalyst; I'm a sounding board,” Ken says. “I can provide lessons from the trenches, from past wars, so to speak, and create the system and a platform that can help these entrepreneurs learn and become better.”“Going through the program for 99% of these companies, they do not give up any equity,” he says. “So we're not out here trying to make ourselves wealthy. We're here to help those entrepreneurs become better entrepreneurs.”Ken says, “We're here to make the world a better place and make these entrepreneurs successful.”As an example of the impact of his work supporting entrepreneurs, he highlighted FIGS, a company in which he invested early (and that was coincidentally featured on my show nearly a decade ago.)Although the successful female entrepreneurs bought him out after 18 months, they went on to list their enterprise on the New York Stock Exchange.Ken has two critical tips for learning to help entrepreneurs succeed. The first is “radical candor.” He says, “Be real. Tell them how it really is. Don't sugarcoat it because you're not doing them any favors. But do it from a place of sincerity and empathy.”The second point is to remind the entrepreneurs of an essential fact. “Those who learn fastest are the ones that are going to be successful.”He prefers the phrase “learn fast” to “fail fast.”There's another business technique called fail fast. I don't like that word because it connotes failure. Like, who wants to fail fast? Like, I don't want to keep failing. I would I rather use the term learn fast, which means you're testing. You're trying out new ideas. Maybe you're doing iterative campaigns, but the whole point is to learn as fast as possible about what's going to work, whether it's trying to discover a customer segment, trying to discover how a technology is going to get adopted. It's all about learning that as quickly as possible and ideally based on evidence.By employing Ken's example and counsel, you can learn to master the art of helping entrepreneurs succeed, making it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Recently, I read The Man Who Broke Capitalism by David Gelles. I keep recommending the book to people, so I figured I should take a moment share it with you. Get full access to Superpowers for Good at devinthorpe.substack.com/subscribe

He shares his knowledge of strategy, design, and entrepreneurship at ASU, SEEDSPOT, and The CleanTech Open. But the main reason that i wanted him to be on the show today was this piece of wisdom, taken from his website. "We believe that design and technology should serve humanity and that anything worth doing is worth doing beautifully. Challenges can be big and complex, but the best solutions are elegantly simple. How The Dots Joined Up For Andrew The best part is the process is no secret. Building high quality applications and websites is as much about great communication as it is about good design and code. Isn't that what I say on Join Up Dots all the time? The first stage of business is to find something that people want, then let them see it, and open up communication to chat. So did he fall into the traps of making things more complex than they should be - but extremely pleasing on the eye? And of course when people dont know who there customers are, how do they know how to speak to them directly? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Andrew Phelps Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Andrew Phelps such as: How Apple might have just fallen from the wayside of the magic years driven through the Andrew shares the steps that he took to where he is today....and it certainly wasn't where he thought he would end up. Andrew remembers meeting his first mentor and being amazed that a fifty year old was so happy with what he was doing. And lastly…….. What’s it all about? As you will hear on the podcast I was introduced to Liam Berryman via a mutual friend and previous podcast guest, Michael Hopkins. I’m so excited about some of the unseen (literally) technologies that are playing such an important role in the fight against the climate crisis. Nanotechnologies are one such area, and this is what we explore on this podcast. I hope you enjoy the episode. About Liam Berryman Liam is CEO and Co-Founder at Nelumbo, a company making physical products resistant to the elements, higher performance, and environmentally sustainable by creatively applying nanostructured materials. As CEO, Liam has led Nelumbo from garage start-up to an emerging company solving major problems for top tier clients. Nelumbo has received greater than $17M in private funding, is developing multiple products that provide breakthrough results for customers and the climate and is forging a defining culture to enable continued excellence in materials innovation and commercialization. Liam is also a personal advisor and mentor to select CEOs building big, unique ventures. He supports areas including deep technology and climate spaces, market analysis and financial planning, fundraising, clarifying story, public speaking, strategic deal structuring, and building growth teams. Liam is a proud member of the Young President’s Organization (YPO), the Thiel Fellowship, and Forbes 30 under 30 for Energy. He has been a featured speaker at a variety of energy and climate conferences, including: Cleantech Forum, European Venture Fair, NREL Industry Growth Forum, Energy & Impact Symposium, Cleantech Open, Verge, Hive, National Investment Banking Association (NIBA), SinBerBEST, and the Cleantech University Prize. About Nelumbo Nelumbo is democratizing the use of nanostructure to solve problems for people and the planet. When a surface is nanostructured, it can be used to create game-changing benefits like ships that never corrode, planes that don’t have problems with ice, machines that are permanently clean, air conditioners that don’t leak refrigerant, and production processes that use far less energy and resources, but this outstanding capability is not regularly used in products today. To change this, we have created the first technology that is able to apply relatively precise nanostructures to surfaces in a low cost, scalable, and environmentally sustainable manner. We focus today on products such as air conditioners / refrigerators and textiles, which represent an aggregate opportunity greater than $200 billion dollars and 500 million tons of mitigated carbon equivalent emissions per year. We are continuously expanding how our platform changes products and lives with new partnerships that push forward the adoption of nanostructure as a powerful tool to solve pain points for products and the planet. Copyright 2019 - The Energy Show, Barry Cinnamon California was the first state to set aggressive goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Senate bill 32, AKA Cap and Trade, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030. We are well on our way to meeting these goals, and happily a dozen other states are pursuing similar paths. In 2018 Governor Brown issued an executive order to go even further: achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 and negative greenhouse gas emissions afterwards. The Governor and Legislature have allocated more than $6 billion dollars — collected from the Cap and Trade Program -- to fund the transition away from polluting fossil fuels. Greenhouse gas emissions come from a variety of sources: 40.6% transportation, 25.8% industrial processes, 12.6% commercial (mostly buildings), 11.9% residential, and 9.2% from agricultural and forestry. As a result of previous policies, most significantly renewable portfolios standards, solar and wind — we have hit most of our goals in the electricity generating sector. Excellent progress is also being made in transportation, most notably with electric cars. California is also making progress in the commercial vehicle segment by incentivizing electric buses and trucks. Nevertheless, almost 25% of our GHG emissions still come from buildings: natural gas for space heating, hot water heating, clothes washing and drying, cooking, and pool heating. New construction standards, both for commercial buildings and residences, will almost completely eliminate natural gas in new buildings. However, natural gas appliances are embedded in our existing homes and commercial buildings, and many of these buildings will be with us for another hundred years (if they are not under water by then). It's a big job to change out the appliances in our current building infrastructure. To learn more about these challenges and realistic solutions, please Listen Up to This Week's Energy Show as we speak with Jeff Byron. Jeff served as the Commissioner at the California Energy Commission for 5 years and more recently a member of the Cleantech Open and Band of Angels. Jeff actually walks the talk, and currently lives in a net zero carbon emission home.

By innovatively solving a technical exhaust problem, this creative team from NG1 Techflo Exhaust won the Clean Tech Open – and all the funding and contacts that come with it. What can you learn from their experience – and do you want this on your truck? “One class 8 truck can save 40,000 lbs of carbon /year” with the NG1 system, and potentially $5,000-$10,000 in related costs, according to the NG1 website. That’s huge! Listen to NG1 TECHflo and Co-Founders Cynthia O’Donnell and Dustin Nord tell Green Connections host Joan Michelson about how it dramatically improves fuel efficiency while decreasing emissions and reducing sound. Live from the Cleantech Open... (Note: We didn’t know they had won when we did this interview.) It seems like if the NG1 Exhaust system was on every diesel truck in the transportation, hauling, construction, agriculture, mining, marine, locomotive, and military industries we’d reduce CO2 pollution considerably.
