On today's episode, Ami Kassar interviews Scott Omelianuk, Editor in Chief of Inc. magazine and Inc.com, on his experience coming in as Editor in Chief just a few weeks before the pandemic hit. Mr. Omelianuk recently joined Inc. as Editor in Chief, where he oversees the brand's recognition programs, events, and content, and is charged with creating new lines of business to support the entrepreneurial community. Though in the role for less than a year, he has already redesigned Inc.'s digital and print properties, launched a data product for firms looking to invest in small businesses, partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on a series of SMB town halls and created its breakout Best in Business franchise. At the Stevens Institute of Technology—a U.S. News & World Report “Top 25 Innovation School”—he is a professor in the School of Business and Technology where he teaches marketing and entrepreneurship and serves as an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University's Venture Center. Prior to arriving at Inc., he advised start-ups and businesses in transition as a partner in HumanConsult.io, a consultancy at the intersection of content, commerce, and technology. There he employed the proprietary “Quid Si” methodology, a combination of rapid ideation, the lean canvas and transformation management to help businesses in transition develop strategic plans, sales and marketing strategies, investment theses and digital transitions. Additionally, he was co-founder of a wellness business for which he wrote the patent. Mr. Omelianuk is widely known for his 12-year tenure at This Old House, where, before its successful sale to private equity, he built a reputation as a creative strategist who took a beloved brand, polished its image, and built around it a tapestry of related businesses, including digital offshoots, Spanish-language TV, lead generation, affiliate revenue, licensed products, and a mobile game strategy. He oversaw English- and Spanish-language television shows, several websites, social channels and a magazine. In an intrapreneurial role at its parent company, Time Inc., he was a C-suite advisor, sought out partnerships and acquisitions and pioneered user-generated content, social video, AR, a mobile gaming strategy, lead generation and other now common digital technologies. Prior to This Old House Scott held senior positions in television, where he was variously an on-camera host and producer at Full Frontal Fashion and a partner at Kaufman Films, the creator of The Real Housewives franchise. Earlier in his career, Mr. Omelianuk was an architect of Esquire magazine's renaissance, increasing revenue 75 percent, overseeing brand licensing, and while there authored four books in the Things a Man Should Know franchise, which he created and then co-wrote with Chopped host Ted Allen. As a journalist, he has covered style internationally for GQ, been a columnist at Details and contributed to the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and other publications. Honored with Ad Age A-List and Media Vanguard awards, Scott is a sought-after speaker on entrepreneurship, marketing and branding, and often appears on television as a business, media and lifestyle expert. A graduate of Gettysburg College and the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, where he obtained an MS in Journalism, he sits on the board of the MIT Enterprise Forum or New York City. Maha Yahya (PhD, Director, Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Centre) Maysoon Pachachi (Film director) give a talk for the Middle East Studies Centre. Chaired by Professor Eugene Rogan (St. Antony's College, Oxford). Iraq and Lebanon: When the Arab world rose up against failed governance in 2011, Lebanon and Iraq stood out as exceptions to the regional trend. Yet by the end of the decade, massed popular demonstrations would demand the fall of the regime in both countries. With their electoral systems, the Iraqis and Lebanese did not confront deeply entrenched dictators. Rather, protestors rose against sectarian politics and called for a new order based on citizenship without reference to religion. Speaker biographies: Maha Yahya is director of the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center, where her work focuses broadly on political violence and identity politics, pluralism, development and social justice after the Arab uprisings, the challenges of citizenship, and the political and socio-economic implications of the migration/refugee crisis. Prior to joining Carnegie, Yahya led work on Participatory Development and Social Justice at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA). I caught up with Dr. Emma Fauss, co-founder & CEO of Medical Informatics Corp. (MIC), to talk about her her role at MIC, their business and it's relationship with Intel, and the amazing work both MIC and Intel have done in response to the COVID19 global pandemic to help hospitals cope with challenges related to the pandemic which most have never had to deal with till now. Emma Fauss is an engineer, researcher and entrepreneur - she is the co-founder and CEO of Medical Informatics Corp. and a Rice Alliance and DFJ Mercury Venture Fellow. She completed a BE degree in Chemical Engineering from The Cooper Union, her PhD from the University of Virginia in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and her MBA from Rice University with a concentration in healthcare. Emma also consults with early-stage entrepreneurs within the Texas Medical Center, as well as Rice University on business strategies and, as an advisor with the MIT Enterprise Forum, consults on biotechnology, nanotechnology, and risk assessment. Our conversation kicks off with some personal background and the journey which lead up to Emma co-founding MIC with her colleague Dr.Craig Rusin in 2010 and the decade since, as well as a peek into what a day in the life of Emma Fauss looks like today, the amazing journey by which Intel came into the picture and became your partner and lessons learned along the way. We also discuss how something as simple as a series of phone calls by Intel’s Bryce Olson to hospitals asking, “What do you need” led to the Intel/MIC collaboration to put your technology into hospitals in record time and completely transform the Intensive Care Unit environment such that it is now literally saving lives. Emma shares insights into what it took for MIC and Intel to put together and run their world leading initiative called “Scale to Serve”, a programme designed to leverage the combined strengths of MIC and Intel to rapidly deploy remote ICUs to 100 US Hospitals using MIC’s Sickbay™ platform. The MIC Sickbay platform is designed to help hospitals rapidly expand intensive care unit (ICU) bed capacity and create more efficient care of the most critical patients while also reducing risk of COVID-19 exposure for critical care providers who are at a higher risk of exposure due to the nature of their work. Tune in now for all of these amazing topics and more. This podcast was made in partnership with Intel. Ukończył London South Bank University, Szkołę Biznesu Politechniki Warszawskiej (MBA) oraz Leadership Academy for Poland. Ten czas doprowadził go do momentu, w którym zaczął zastanawiać się nad celowością pewnych działań. Wyjechał do Londynu aby studiować biznes i finanse. Tam zaangażował się w budowę polskiego kluby Toast Makers - inicjatywie, która skupiała się na krzewieniu wystąpień publicznych. Andrzej uświadomił sobie, jak bardzo jest to dla niego fascynujący temat. Niestety, wraz z powrotem do Polski odsunął go na dalszy plan. Excerpts of a recent panel discussion offered by the MIT Enterprise Forum in a Get Smart program  entitled "Angel Investing. It's Right for Many Startups.  Is it Right for Yours?" The program was hosted by Nutter, McClennen and Fish, LLP, a Boston-based  law firm with corporate, litigation and IP practice, and  was held on October 30, 2012,  at the law firm's Louis Brandeis conference center, in downtown Boston. Panelists were from Boston Harbor Angels,  a Boston-based angel investing group made up of business leaders who invest in high-growth, early-stage companies. Since 2004 the group has made investments in companies in medical devices, IT, consumer products, business products, specialty materials, Internet, aviation, etc.    In the session, you'll hear from Mic Williams, the founder and president of Boston Harbor Angels.  He has been an investor for over 34 years, with investments ranging from commercial real estate to manufacturing, mining, movies, lumber products, ships and a television enterprises. Since he founded the Boston chapter of Keiretsu Forum in 2004 and then Boston Harbor Angels in 2006, he has personally invested in more than a dozen "portfolio” companies.  You will also hear from Jeff Arnold, a member of Boston Harbor Angels and the CEO of Arnold Strategies, LLC, which assists early stage and growth companies in strategy, marketing, financing, organizational development and strategic partnerships. He was formerly a CEO of multiple technology and life science companies who raised over $140 million in venture capital and public financings and achieved four exits through acquisition and IPO. Jeff is a mentor to early stage companies at the MIT Venture Mentoring Society, on the grant review board at the MIT Deshpande Center and an investor with Boston Harbor Angels and Mass. Med. Angels. He was formerly Chairman of the Greater Boston Chapter of the American Heart Association. He received a BSEE from MIT in 1972. And, finally, you will hear from Bill McPhee, also a member of Boston Harbor Angels who currently serves as the director of outsourced business development services for Health Advances LLC, a life science strategy consulting boutique.  Bill has 25 years experience in transactions, strategy and operations consulting and venture capital. He has served as founder and managing general partner of Mi3 Venture Partners, an early stage life science fund; founder and managing director of Lucas, McPhee & Co., an international strategy firm; and, a consultant at Bain & Co.  You can read more about the panelists and the MIT enterprise form of Cambridge get smart program at http://www.mitforumcambridge.org/events/get-smart-on-angel-funding Here's a little background . . .  Angel investment in startups totaled over $22 billion in 2011 and funded some 66,000 companies, according to UNH’s Center for Venture Research. With average funding-round sizes well over $500k, angel groups are increasingly joining forces with other investors to bring that average closer to $1.5 Million. So says the Halo Report, which also notes that Internet, healthcare and mobile/telecom companies are the largest beneficiaries of those monies. So who are angel investors? Many are former successful entrepreneurs, who provide advice, in addition to money, to target companies. Angels, however, can also be individuals of lower wealth and/or with non-entrepreneurial background who are drawn to startups for a higher rate of return than might be expected in the stock market, notes the Kauffman Foundation. The popular press suggests that venture funding is the key to every startup’s success. But that sort of funding comes at a high price in terms of equity and performance expectations. Angels expect equity and performance, too—yet at levels better geared to the realistic trajectories of many startups. Angels, according to the Wall Street Journal, are a “good funding source to consider after you’ve tapped your friends and relatives.”
