Have you heard the saying “research is me-search”? It means people often explore topics they personally need or want to understand better. Well, that's exactly what today's episode is for me. I've had migraines since I was a teenager, and after being diagnosed with ADHD a couple of years ago, I started noticing how closely the two seem to be connected. Conversations with clients, colleagues, and other people I know showed me that I'm not alone. It seems like many people who have ADHD also deal with migraines. I started researching to find out if there is a connection between migraines and ADHD, and it turns out, there is! I connected with Dr. Sarah Cheyette to learn more. Dr. Cheyette is a pediatric neurologist who specializes in both ADHD and migraines. Dr. Cheyette graduated from Princeton University and received her medical degree at UCLA. Following specialty training in pediatrics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and in pediatric neurology at Seattle Children's Hospital, she practiced at Palo Alto Medical Foundation. She now owns a private practice in northern California. Today, she brings her insight into how these two conditions overlap. In our conversation, we talk about what migraines are, why migraines happen, how they're triggered, and—most importantly—what we can actually do about them - both to prevent and treat. Dr. Cheyette shares strategies for tracking headaches, making small but meaningful lifestyle changes, how to make sure you're doing the right things and taking the right meds to manage these debilitating headaches. Whether you live with both ADHD and migraines, or you're supporting someone who does, I hope you'll find this episode informative and validating. I have shared some articles and research studies in the show Show notes:Learn More About Dr. Sarah Cheyettehttps://sarahcheyette.com/Migraines and ADHDThe Connection Between Migraine and ADHDhttps://www.migrainedisorders.org/migraine-and-adhd/Migraines and ADHD: The Overlooked Connection to Headacheshttps://www.additudemag.com/migraines-and-adhd-headaches-symptoms-treatmentsThe Connection Between ADHD and Migraineshttps://chadd.org/adhd-weekly/the-connection-between-adhd-and-migraines/Comorbidity of migraine with ADHD in adultshttps://bmcneurol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12883-018-1149-6ADHD Is Comorbid to Migraine in Childhood: A Population-Based Studyhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28587507/Learn More About Our MAP Programhttps://map.worksmartcoaching.comLearn More About 1:1 Coachinghttps://www.beyondbooksmart.com/how-it-works

Why do conditions like asthma, nasal polyps, or eczema become more severe when they coexist? Kortney and Dr. Payel Gupta are joined by Dr. Michael Blaiss to explore the common thread linking multiple allergic and inflammatory diseases: Type 2 Inflammation. If you've ever wondered why certain conditions often appear together, this deep dive will help you connect the dots. Type 2 Inflammation is a hot topic in immunology because it's the engine that drives many allergic and inflammatory diseases. It's also the key to modern treatment strategies, including targeted biologic therapies. Dr. Blaiss explains how clinicians recognize multiple Type 2-driven conditions in the same patient, why it is important to know the connection between multiple conditions and Type 2 inflammation, and the big-picture benefits of treating inflammation aggressively to prevent complications. What We Cover in our Episode about The Diseases Related to Type 2 Inflammation Conditions Related to Type 2 Inflammation: Explore how chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), prurigo nodularis, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), and food allergies can all share a common inflammatory pathway. The Likelihood of Having Multiple Type 2 Conditions: How often do patients have more than one condition related to Type 2 Inflammation, and why is recognizing overlap a potential game-changer for diagnosis and treatment? Treating the Root Inflammation vs. Individual Symptoms: Discover how clinicians decide whether to address each condition separately or tackle the underlying Type 2 inflammatory process affecting them all. Markers & Personalized Medicine: Dr. Blaiss discusses whether potential tests, such as eosinophil counts or IgE levels, can confirm Type 2 inflammation. He also explains how knowing you have Type 2 Inflammation can help guide targeted therapy. Prevention & Aggressive Intervention: Understand why it's crucial to treat inflammation early to reduce the risk of developing multiple Type 2 conditions and how this proactive approach benefits long-term health. Gelfand, Professor of Dermatology and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania, to explore the critical issue of comorbidities in dermatology, with a focus on psoriasis, and address why dermatologists should take an active role in recognizing and addressing these risks. Dr Gelfand reflects on his early observations of patients with psoriasis and their potential internal health issues, noting how in the past, psoriasis was primarily seen as just a skin condition. However, research and a pivotal article on inflammatory pathways in atherosclerosis led to improved understanding that psoriasis is linked to cardiovascular disease. Dr Gelfand then discusses the groundbreaking use of electronic medical records to track patients with psoriasis over time, revealing higher incidences of cardiovascular events and mortality. This research highlighted that people with moderate to severe psoriasis have a reduced life expectancy by about 5 years, underscoring the need for dermatologists to address comorbidities in their patients. The conversation then explores practical advice for clinicians, focusing on the role of dermatologists in identifying cardiovascular and diabetes risks in patients with psoriasis. Dr Gelfand suggests a simple yet effective approach: educate patients about their increased health risks, perform basic screenings like cholesterol and blood pressure checks, and collaborate with primary care physicians or cardiologists when needed. By fostering multidisciplinary care, dermatologists can play a crucial role in preventing life-threatening conditions in their patients. Tune in to the full episode for guidance on addressing the broader health risks associated with psoriasis and the practical steps dermatologists can take to help reduce these risks. From screening for cardiovascular disease to forming strong collaborations with other health care providers, this episode offers valuable insights for improving patient outcomes.
Why do we so easily form ‘us vs. them' mentalities, and how does it impact our society? In the second part of this series, Kurt and Tim dive into the psychological roots of polarization, starting with the famous Robbers Cave Experiment. They explore how easily group identities and loyalties form, even among strangers, and how this translates into in-group loyalty and out-group hostility. The discussion expands to cover the role geography plays in shaping political views, as explained by researchers like Ryan Enos. There's also a compelling debate about whether polarization is truly worsening or if we're just more aware of it due to better data. Kurt and Tim then turn to economists who have studied how our political identities drive us to make decisions that sometimes go against our own interests. Wrapping up the episode, they examine the societal impact of polarization, from trust and cooperation to the functioning of democratic institutions. The conversation underscores the complexity of polarization and the diverse approaches needed to fully understand and address its consequences. In this episode of the Bendy Bodies podcast, Dr. Linda Bluestein, the Hypermobility MD, welcomes Dr. Alan Hakim, a world-renowned rheumatologist and expert in Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD). Dr. Hakim reveals for the first time something about his own health. Listen in to find out what Dr. Hakim really thinks about the Beighton Score and the 2017 hEDS Classification Criteria. He also shares when he feels genetic testing is indicated and how to interpret variants of uncertain significance (VUSs). Takeaways: Difference Between Connective Tissue Disorders: Dr. Hakim clarifies the difference between hereditary connective tissue disorders like EDS and autoimmune connective tissue disorders such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Evolving EDS Criteria: The 2017 classification of EDS has improved the understanding of conditions like hypermobile EDS, but there's still ongoing research and work being done to refine the criteria. Dr. Hakim shares his thoughts on the criteria and the process. Comorbidities in EDS and HSD: Conditions such as POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and GI disorders often accompany hypermobility-related disorders, though more research is needed to establish how these comorbidities are connected. The Importance of Instability: Joint instability, rather than just hypermobility, may play a more significant role in patient symptoms, making proper diagnosis and treatment plans essential. Future of Genetic Testing: While genetic markers for hypermobile EDS have not yet been identified, significant research is underway to find biomarkers and better understand the genetic components of these disorders. Dr. Hakim shares his thoughts on when genetic testing should be performed and covers red flags for more rare types of EDS and other hereditary connective tissue disorders. Included in this episode: Over 43% of menopausal women have obesity. **hormonal changes don't just happen to women. We need to be focused on preventative measures to live your most fulfilled, aging life. For many women there is a decrease in estrogen and progesterone, combined with general aging, that triggers metabolic changes in the body. More often than not these metabolic changes are negative - causing a decrease in muscle mass which results in fewer caloric needs for the body. ***just because you have hormonal changes and metabolic changes in the body, the laws of thermodynamics do not change. You don't magically change how you process calories as you age. What largely contributes to the overall issue within menopause and weight gain is a chain reaction of events. Women gain on average of 1 pound per year. The overall increase being 10 lbs on average. In short, menopause is a hormonal change in the body which causes behavioral impact that makes you overeat and gain weight. Why should you care about addressing menopause? Comorbidities - heart disease, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, cancer, respiratory insufficiency, sleep apnea. What are the solutions? Lifestyle and behavior modifications Nutrition, calorie deficit Exercise 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity. Full body muscle strength training more than two days a week. Medications that help you be more consistent with lifestyle changes. GLP1Hormone therapy. Common issues I see: Alcohol.People underestimate just how much your body needs to be healthy. Having compassion for where you are and where you have been but discipline and harsh truth to get you where you want to go. The reality is, if you want a different outcome, different body composition, things have to change. I see a lot of women who have spent their entire lives neglecting their health, taking care of everyone else, wondering why the years of neglecting their health have ended up so badly. For all the years you have spent not doing the necessary requirements for healthy weight and health prevention is all of the years you are going to have to spend undoing it. Language and executive functioning have a bidirectional relationship (Baron & Arbel, 2022; Larson, et al., 2019). This means that building language skills can impact executive functioning, and vice versa. A significant amount of executive functioning skills are required to comprehend language-based academic tasks like reading and writing. Yet strategic thinking (which is part of executive functioning) requires a significant amount of internal dialogue; which is very difficult to engage in without adequate vocabulary or ability to use and understand complex syntax (Fahy, 2014). Complex sentences are loaded with language that indicates cause and effect or temporal information; all which are essential for strategic planning. On top of that, many students continue to struggle with reading comprehension without direct work on foundational language skills; even if they're taught comprehension strategies (Eberhardt, 2013; Scott, 2009; Scott & Koonce, 2014; Nippold, 2017).One might make the argument then (which I often do), that these underlying language skills are necessary to developing strong executive functioning skills. This makes both treatment planning, diagnosis, and determining eligibility for educational programming complicated; especially when it comes to legal guidelines as well as state and local policies. That's why in episode 166 of De Facto Leaders, I'm sharing a Q & A session I did in my Language Therapy Advance Foundations member's group to talk about the relationship between syntax, processing and higher level cognitive processes like executive functioning. In this episode, I share: ✅How to create a strategic plan if you need to build a system for language therapy and a system for executive functioning intervention?✅Should you focus on the students' needs or your own needs when planning your professional development goals?✅Common comorbidities and diagnoses to consider when focusing on language, executive functioning, and reading/writing.✅The impact of syntax on other language and cognitive processes.✅Common sentence types that are difficult for individuals with DLD and other diagnoses that impact language.✅Ineffective strategies used to comprehend difficult sentence types.✅Why do these difficult sentence types impact comprehension, processing, and our ability to engage in internal dialogue and strategic planning? In this episode, I mention Language Therapy Advance Foundations, my program that helps SLPs create a system for language therapy.
