If you've been managing IBS by avoiding certain foods but still experiencing unpredictable flare-ups, you're not alone. Emerging science shows that IBS is a complex condition involving multiple body systems: your nervous system, immune response, and gut microbiome all influence how and when symptoms appear. For something so physical, IBS is rarely just about the gut.I created this IBS Masterclass podcast episode to help you finally understand what's really driving your symptoms. And it's not just about food. Stress, sleep, movement, and even your gut-brain connection can all play a role in making IBS worse.Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, affects nearly 1 in 10 people worldwide, yet it's still so often dismissed as "just a sensitive gut." The reality? IBS sits in that quiet, complicated space between physical and emotional. And we don't need more elimination diets or shame. We need understanding, compassion, and space to heal.To give you the clearest answers, I've brought together the world's leading gut health experts:Dr. Will Bulsiewicz – gastroenterologist and NYT bestselling author of Fiber Fueled, helping us understand the role of fiber, fermentation, and plant diversity in long-term digestive healthDr. James Kinross – colorectal surgeon and author of Dark Matter, exploring how gut bacteria influence inflammation, immunity, and disease riskDr. Emeran Mayer – gastroenterologist & neuroscientist, author of The Mind-Gut-Immune Connection, bringing over four decades of research into how emotions, microbes, and immunity shape the IBS experienceProfessor Felice Jacka – Director of the Food & Mood Centre at Deakin University, pioneer in nutritional psychiatry, uncovering how food and mental health are deeply connected through the gutWe explore: • How stress and trauma shape gut-brain signalling • Why the vagus nerve is a key player in digestion• The misunderstood link between emotional health and IBS • Whether FODMAP diets help or simply mask deeper issues • And how to create a sense of calm in your body that supports long-term healingThis isn't just a masterclass. It's a myth-busting, life-affirming conversation that every person with IBS deserves to hear. You'll discover why your body reacts the way it does and learn how to listen with more compassion. Because sometimes, what looks like bloating or discomfort is your nervous system saying, "I don't feel safe."If IBS has made you feel frustrated, alone, or disconnected from your own body, I hope this episode brings you clarity and relief. You deserve to feel at home in your body again.Love,Sarah Ann

Shifting the Dark Matter of Education - A Conversation with Indy Johar and Adam Purvis

Which places might be the first movers in a radical educational shift? And by radical in this conversation we're not talking about small tweaks in the types of individual competencies and credentials we optimize for in our current version of schools. But a completely different set of logics, values, meaning and purpose for what education could be, set in a broader context of the transformation of systems and radical democratic renewal. This might all sound pretty grand but I believe, like my guests today, that building for this transition is the work we all have to do! I've been a huge admirer of the work of Dark Matter Labs for a long time and so it was an incredible opportunity for me to be able to sit down with Indy Johar and Adam Purvis to explore these massive and important issues.Indy is an architect and co-founder & Mission Steward of Dark Matter Labs. He is also a founding director of open systems lab, seeded WikiHouse (open source housing) and Open Desk (open source furniture company). Indy's work is focused on the strategic design of new super scale civic assets for transition - specifically at the intersection of financing, contracting and governance for deeply democratic futures.Indy is a non-executive international Director of the BloxHub, the Nordic Hub for sustainable urbanization. He is on the advisory board for the Future Observatory and is part of the committee for the London Festival of Architecture. He is also a fellow of the London Interdisciplinary School.Indy was 2016-17 Graham Willis Visiting Professorship at Sheffield University. He was Studio Master at the Architectural Association - 2019-2020, UNDP Innovation Facility Advisory Board Member 2016-20 and RIBA Trustee 2017-20.He has taught & lectured at various institutions from the University of Bath, TU-Berlin; University College London, Princeton, Harvard, MIT and New School. He was awarded the London Design Medal for Innovation in 2022 and an MBE in 2023.Adam Purvis has spent over a decade building mission led movements and networks. His primary role at Dark Matter Labs is holding the team and driving internal clarity. Previously, Adam was cofounder of FutureX, a major influence on how the Scottish Government supported entrepreneurship, startups and innovation. Adam served as the convener of the CAN DO Forum, on the MSc E&I Innovation Board of University of Edinburgh Business School, and the Advisory Board of Napier University Business School.  Since then Adam's focus has moved to the systems in which business and entrepreneurs operate, taking everything he learnt from the greatest doers on the planet who have humanity in their heart, and applying that to the systems that we all operate in today. Links:https://darkmatterlabs.org/https://www.linkedin.com/in/indy-johar-b440b010/https://www.linkedin.com/in/adampurvis/

How half of the normal matter in the universe is finally confirmed to exist, not that most of us knew it wasn't. Also, why the next big collider should be muon-muon, and a spider that hangs out around underwater methane seeps. The universe is thought to consist of 70% Dark Energy, 25% Dark Matter, and just 5% Baryonic matter which is the atoms that make up you and me. At least, that's what the models suggest. But a well-kept secret between astronomers and cosmologists for all these years has been that they haven't actually ever seen almost half of that 5% normal matter because it is thinly dispersed as gas between the galaxies and galactic clusters. This week, two studies have been published putting that right.Satisfactory model-match #1: Liam Connor of Harvard University with colleagues from Caltech have been using a mysterious phenomenon called Fast Radio Bursts (FBRs) to infer what the intergalactic medium is in between, and how much of it there is. Satisfactory model-match #2: Konstanios Migkas of Leiden University and colleagues have been looking at the very faint x-ray signal from the intergalactic medium, removing the incidental x-ray sources such as black holes, and have managed to identify some structure - in this case a mind-bendingly huge filament of ionised gas stretching between two galactic superclusters - confirming the state of “Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium” (WHIM) as predicted for much of the universe.Of course, there is not just the cosmological standard model (lambdaCDM) that these satisfy in science today. There is also the remarkably resilient Standard Model of particle physics. A report this week from the US National Academies recommends the US begins building the world's next particle collider to follow the work of the LHC (and FCC) at Cern. It should, as University of Tennessee at Knoxville's Tova Holmes tells us, collide not ordinary, stable, easy to manipulate particles like protons and electrons, but muons. Finally, Shana Goffredi of Occidental College in California, has found a VERY odd spider. Diving to depths in the submersible Alvin, they have found that a species of small sea-spiders, Sericosura, actually farm bacteria on their exoskeleton. Why? Because they hang around methane seeps on the ocean floor, where a specialist bacteria can metabolize methane – something the spiders themselves can't do. Not only do the spiders then graze on the bacteria they carry around, they even pass samples of the bacteria onto their offspring by leaving bacterial lunch-boxes in their egg-sacs.Presenter: Roland Pease Producer: Alex Mansfield, with Sophie Ormiston Production Coordinator: Jasmine Cerys GeorgePhoto Credit: Jack Madden, IllustrisTNG, Ralf Konietzka, Liam Connor/CfA

Dr Charlie Andrews talks to Dr James Kinross, PhD, FRCS Dr. Kinross is a senior lecturer in surgery at Imperial College in London. He is also a practicing colorectal surgeon in the NHS with a clinical interest in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer. He leads a team of amazing researchers working to better define how the microbiome causes cancer and other chronic diseases of the gut. He is increasingly interested in how the gut microbiome develops in newborn babies and the implications on our long-term health. He is the author of the well know book DARK MATTER.Here are the key learnings for primary care on the microbiome from the attached transcript of the Ingest podcast with James Kinross:Key Learnings for Primary Care on the Microbiome1. What the Microbiome Is and Why It MattersDefinition: The microbiome is the collection of all microscopic organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.) and the environment they inhabit within a specific niche in the body, such as the gut, skin, or lungs. Symbiosis: The microbiome has a symbiotic relationship with the host, evolved over millennia. It is not static but dynamic and changes throughout life. Personalization: Each person's microbiome is unique, impacting how individuals respond to treatments and develop diseases[1].2. Microbiome Development and Early LifeEarly Colonization: The microbiome starts developing in utero, influenced by the mother's microbiome, and is further shaped by birth route, breastfeeding, and early environmental exposures. Critical Window: Early life is a critical period for microbiome development. Disruption, especially through antibiotic use, can have long-term effects on immune system development and disease risk[1]. Antibiotics Impact: Repeated or broad-spectrum antibiotic use in early life can lead to persistent changes in the microbiome, increasing the risk of immune-mediated diseases (e.g., allergies, asthma, eczema), obesity, and other non-communicable diseases[1].3. Microbiome and the Immune SystemImmune Regulation: The microbiome plays a crucial role in shaping both the innate and adaptive immune systems. It influences how the body recognizes and responds to threats. Disease Risk: Early disruption of the microbiome can increase susceptibility to autoimmune diseases, allergies, and chronic conditions later in life. Gene-Environment-Microbiome Interaction: Disease risk is not just about genes and environment but also involves the microbiome (GEM interaction), which is highly personalized and dynamic[1].4. Probiotics, Prebiotics, and DietProbiotics: There is evidence supporting the use of probiotics, especially multi-strain, high-dose formulations, during and after antibiotic courses. However, probiotics must be taken consistently for weeks to have an effect. Prebiotics and Diet: Feeding the microbiome with a high-fiber, plant-based diet is crucial for maintaining a healthy gut ecosystem. Processed foods and sugary drinks should be minimized, especially during illness or antibiotic treatment[1]. Practical Advice: Clinicians should recommend probiotics and dietary changes as part of a holistic approach to gut health, but the evidence for specific strains is still evolving[1].5. Microbiome TestingDirect-to-Consumer Testing: Online microbiome tests are not currently recommended due to lack of stand... This theory, proposed by physicist Mordecai Milgrom, modifies Newton's laws to explain the gravitational behavior observed in galaxies without relying on dark matter. We delve into the latest findings that support MOND, including a novel method for measuring gravity in wide binary star systems, which indicates that gravity may actually be stronger than Newton's predictions under certain conditions.Earth's Hidden Gold ReservesA groundbreaking study reveals that Earth's core may contain vast reserves of gold and other precious metals, far beyond what is accessible on the surface. Researchers discovered traces of ruthenium in volcanic rocks from Hawaii, suggesting that these metals originated from the core and are leaking into the mantle. This research opens new avenues for understanding Earth's internal dynamics and the movement of materials from the core to the surface.Searching for Life's Chemistry on TitanNASA's upcoming Dragonfly mission aims to investigate the intriguing chemistry of life on Titan, Saturn's largest moon. With its organic-rich environment and unique geological features, Titan presents an opportunity to study prebiotic chemistry in a way that Earth cannot. We explore how Dragonfly will analyze the moon's surface and atmosphere to uncover clues about the processes that may have led to the emergence of life, potentially reshaping our understanding of habitability in the universe.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstrophysical Journalhttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/0004-637XNaturehttps://www.nature.com/nature/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.00:00 This is Space Time Series 28, Episode 68 for broadcast on 6 June 202501:00 Modified Newtonian dynamics as an alternative to dark matter12:15 Earth's hidden gold reserves22:30 Searching for life's chemistry on Titan30:00 Science report: Ancient tool-making from whale bones and quantum computing breakthroughs

We are honoured to bring to Accidental Gods, a recording of three of our generation's leading thinkers in conversation at the Festival of Debate in Sheffield, hosted by Opus. This is an unflinching conversation, but it's absolutely at the cutting edge of imagineering: this lays out where we're at and what we need to do, but it also gives us roadmaps to get there:  It's genuinely Thrutopian, not only in the ideas as laid out, but the emotional literacy of the approach to the wicked problems of our time.  Now we have to make it happen. Kate Raworth is a renegade economist, author of the groundbreaking book, Doughnut Economics: 7 ways to think like a 21st Century Economist and founder of the Doughnut Economics Action Lab which is seeing companies, cities and nations around the world working towards an economy that prioritises flourishing of people and planet ahead of growth for growth's sake.  Kate is a Senior Teaching Fellow at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, where she teaches on the Masters in Environmental Change and Management. She is also Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.Indy Johar is an architect, co-founder of 00 on behalf of which he cofounded  multiple social ventures from Impact Hub Westminster to Impact Hub Birmingham. He has also co-led research projects such as The Compendium for the Civic Economy, whilst supporting several 00 explorations/experiments including the wikihouse.cc, opendesk.cc.  More recently he  founded Dark Matter Labs - a field laboratory focused building the institutional infrastructures for radicle civic societies, cities, regions and towns. Dark Matter works with institutions around the world, from UNDP (Global), Climate Kic, McConnell (Canada), to the Scottish Gove to Bloxhub (Copenhagen). Indy has taught at various institutions from the University of Bath, TU-Berlin; Architectural Association, University College London, Princeton, Harvard, MIT and New School. James Lock is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Opus Independents Ltd, a not-for-profit social enterprise, working in culture, politics and the arts. Opus works to encourage and support participation, systemic activism and creativity with project strands that include Now Then Magazine & App, Festival of Debate. Opus Distribution, the River Dôn Project and Wordlife.  James was on the podcast quite recently - in episode #279 - and we talked about the upcoming Festival of Debate and the fact that, amongst many other outstanding conversations, he'd be talking with Kate and Indy who are easily up their in my pantheon of modern intentional gods.  Afterwards, James and I discussed the possibility of our bringing the recording of that conversation to the podcast - and here we are.  Enjoy!Opus Independents https://www.weareopus.org/Festival of Debate https://festivalofdebate.com/Kate Raworth https://www.kateraworth.com/Doughnut Economics Action Lab https://doughnuteconomics.org/Doughnut Economics book https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Kate-Raworth/Doughnut-Economics--Seven-Ways-to-Think-Like-a-21st-Century-Economist/21739630Indy Johar https://about.me/indy.joharIndy's blog at DML https://provocations.darkmatterlabs.orgDark Matter Labs https://darkmatterlabs.org/Indy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/indy-johar-b440b010/Indy on Substack https://indyjohar.substack.com/James Lock on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-lock-964a8014/Rob Shorter of the Doughnut Economics Action Lab on Accidental Gods #41 https://accidentalgods.life/doughnut-economics-action-lab/Indy on Accidental Gods #205 https://accidentalgods.life/becoming-intentional-gods-claiming-the-future-with-indy-johar-of-the-dark-matter-labs/James on Accidental Gods #279 https://accidentalgods.life/now-then-building-networks-of-citizen-power-with-james-lock-of-opus-in-sheffield/What we offer - Accidental Gods, Dreaming Awake and the Thrutopia Writing Masterclass If you'd like to join us at Accidental Gods, this is the membership. This theory, outlined in the journal Physical Review Letters, proposes that these particles formed during the early universe's chaotic conditions, akin to steam turning into water. We discuss how this model could be tested using existing cosmic microwave background radiation data, potentially revolutionizing our understanding of dark matter's properties and formation.Visible Light Auroras on MarsIn a historic achievement, NASA's Perseverance rover has captured the first visible light auroras on Mars, confirming long-held theories about Martian atmospheric phenomena. This event, triggered by a massive solar flare, opens up new avenues for auroral research and suggests that future astronauts could witness these stunning displays on the Martian surface. We explore the implications of this discovery and how it enhances our understanding of solar interactions with planetary atmospheres.Quasiperiodic Eruptions: A New Type of X-ray ExplosionAstronomers have identified a new type of X-ray outburst known as quasiperiodic eruptions, occurring near supermassive black holes. Observed in a galaxy 300 million light-years away, these eruptions exhibit a unique pattern, with events occurring every 4.5 days. We discuss the mechanisms behind these eruptions and their significance in understanding the dynamics of black holes and their surrounding environments.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesPhysical Review Lettershttps://journals.aps.org/prl/Science Advanceshttps://www.science.org/journal/sciadvAstrophysical Journalhttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/0004-637XBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.00:00 This is Space Time Series 28, Episode 62 for broadcast on 23 May 202501:00 New theory explaining the birth of dark matter12:15 First visible light auroras detected on Mars20:30 Discovery of quasiperiodic eruptions near supermassive black holes30:00 Science report: AI chatbots exaggerate research summaries

Best-selling author of “One Nation Under Blackmail”, Whitney Webb, is back to discuss her latest article on the covert moves that are being made by one of the most polarizing figures in recent American history, Erik Prince. While his former company Blackwater underwent multiple rebrandings to attempt to remove the bloodstains from the carpet in the lobby, Prince was busy launching new ventures from his home base in the United Arab Emirates, such as Comframe and Dark Matter, which seek to help the Chinese acquire technology from Israel to assist with its Belt and Road Initiative. While China attempts to rebuild the fabled Silk Road to connect the world together, the United Nations is busy devising new ways in which to destroy it. Using the imagined threat of “climate change” as the new invisible enemy, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals are leading the world into a digital panopticon where the public is treated as fenced livestock and the Globalists are the only ones with the keys. JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE KEEPS DISCOVERING THE UNEXPLAINED IN THE CREATION OF GALAXIES.  3/4: Flashes of Creation: George Gamow, Fred Hoyle, and the Great Big Bang Debate, by Paul Halpern https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PV5CLZQ/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i0 A respected physics professor and author breaks down the great debate over the Big Bang and the continuing quest to understand the fate of the universe. Today, the Big Bang is so entrenched in our understanding of the cosmos that to doubt it would seem crazy. But as Paul Halpern shows in Flashes of Creation, just decades ago its mere mention caused sparks to fly. At the center of the debate were the Russian-American physicist George Gamow and the British astrophysicist Fred Hoyle. Gamow insisted that a fiery explosion explained how the elements of the universe were created. Attacking the idea as half-baked, Hoyle countered that the universe was engaged in a never-ending process of creation. The battle was fierce. In the end, Gamow turned out to be right—mostly—and Hoyle, along with his many achievements, is remembered for giving the theory the silliest possible name: "the Big Bang." Halpern captures the brilliance of both thinkers and reminds us that even those proven wrong have much to teach us about boldness, imagination, and the universe, itself. 2007 DARK MATTER?

Categorizing things is central to science. And there are dozens of systems scientists have created to name everything from the trenches on the sea bed to the stars in the sky.But names have consequences. What's in a name is a series exploring naming in science and how names impact the world. We look at whether the system of naming species remains in step with society, how the names of diseases can create stigma, and how the names chosen by scientists can help, or hinder, communication with the public. In episode three, we're looking at how the names chosen for concepts in physics can inadvertently send researchers down very specific research avenues while distracting them from others. In this podcast we hear five stories about the importance of names and how much can be lost in translation when physicists try and label the unknown. For a list of sources and music used, please visit the podcast show notes Hosted on Acast.
