That's when our Declaration of Independence was ratified by the Second Continental Congress establishing the United States of America as an independent country. The fight against tyranny is never complete. That was the lesson of January 6th in our country when a failed former president tried to usurp control of our country. Fortunately, he was defeated by law - abiding, just Americans. The threat is still here. So this week, we're celebrating Independence Day with Celtic music. The Celts also know what it means to be oppressed by tyrants. We have a whole slew of songs on the topic. Today, we're gonna share a small sampling of songs of independence and freedom by Celtic musicians. It's also officially Plastic Free July. You can help break free from the single - use plastic problem by refusing them in the month of July so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities. Will you be part of the solution this month? If you are a Celtic musician or in a Celtic band, then please submit your band to be played on the podcast. You don't have to send in music or an EPK. You will get a free eBook called Celtic Musicians Guide to Digital Music and learn how to follow the podcast. It's 100% free. Just email Email follow@bestcelticmusic and of course, listeners can learn how to subscribe to the podcast and get a free music - only episode. THANK YOU HEROIC PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! ABOUT THE NEW ADS IN THE PUBLIC FEED If you've been listening to the show over the last couple of weeks, you will have noticed something new to the show. Ads placed at the beginning and ending of each episode. The show has been published regularly for almost 19 years with very few ads, outside of those for my Celtic Invasion Vacations and Patreon. I'll be honest. I'm not a huge fan of advertising…or corporations in general. And I'm still deciding whether I'm gonna continue having ads in the show. The fact is that this podcast costs a decent amount to produce as I'll tell you about later. We've built something incredible here. We have a large number of Patrons of the Podcast who support this show each and every week. It's mind - blowing the amount of support this show gets. But it doesn't cover all of my expenses. And there's so much more I'd like to do to reach more Celtic music fans, which requires money. This would be one way to help us grow our podcast. So if you don't like those ads, please become a Patron of the Podcast, because they are not included in any of the Patreon shows. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! You are amazing. It is because of your generosity that you get to hear so much great Celtic music each and every week. It is such a fun weekend." Ryan Weyls emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I've attached photos from a pair of shows I went to this weekend: Dàimh at the Town Crier in Beacon, NY and Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones at the Rambling House in the Bronx. The lighting at Rambling House was a bit harsh and didn't agree with my phone, so I've only included two photos. Both bands sounded excellent. Irish-American John A. Logan was an American soldier and politician who served admirably in the Mexican–American War and was a general in the Union Army in the Civil War. An Illinois native, he served as a State Senator, a Congressman, and a U.S. Senator and was on the ticket as a Vice Presidential candidate in 1884. He is widely regarded as the most important figure in the movement to recognize Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) as an official national holiday.General Logan's likeness appears on a statue at the center of Logan Circle, Washington, D.C. and of course right here in Logan Square in Chicago. Logan is one of only three people mentioned by name in the Illinois state song along with President Lincoln and President U.S. Grant.Tune in for our Memorial Day tribute in honor of General Logan and those who have fought with songs and tunes from KC's The Elders, Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones, Steve Earle with The Pogues, Danny Burns with Tift Merritt, Flogging Molly, Eileen Ivers, Dónal Clancy, Tupelo, The Byrne Brothers, Leaping Lulu, The Logues, and Emma Langford. Tonight's broadcast pays tribute to Ellis Island, the great gateway to the United States, that closed on November 12, 1954 after more than 12 million immigrants passed through it's doors. Ellis Island's first immigrant, was Ireland-native, Annie Moore, who at age 15, along with her two brothers, were the first immigrants to pass through the newly opened Ellis Island on January 2, 1892. More than 40% of all American's can trace their roots through Ellis Island which, after $160 million dollar renovation, serves as a museum paying tribute to the millions who paved a better life in the U.S. We feature immigrant songs from Hothouse Flowers, Derek Warfield and Wolftones, and Scythian as well as music from We Banjo 3, Mountain Dew, the Chieftans, The Pogues, Colin Farrell and much more. Tune in weekly live on WSBC 1240AM Chicago and WCFJ 1470AM Chicago Heights or find us on our website at www.windycityirishradio.com.
