We're very proud to present Episode 10 of the Venom Skate podcast with now 2x World Cup Champion Harry Clarke. Harry is the most powerful force on the race circuit today. Coming off an undefeated season, his first World Championship, and his second World Cup Championship, Harry has been unstoppable and has no plans of slowing down. KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky discusses the year in theatre in the Bay Area in 2023, plus a top ten list and two honorable mentions. Text of the podcast. In the Bay Area, Live theatre companies continued in 2023 to adapt to the post-Covid world. While movie audience sizes seems to be returning to pre-pandemic numbers. live theater remains mostly on life support across the board, mainly because season subscriptions are down by at least a third or maybe more, which means theatergoers are buying tickets on a show by show basis. That makes planning difficult, and it also means artistic directors are less likely to produce shows that are more challenging in favor of audiences pleasers such as musicals, comedies, and most importantly, the warhorses that folks are willing to see over and over again. The great multi-theatre venue, Piano Fight, in the Tenderloin closed its doors in March, leaving a host of younger theatregoers bereft. Bay Area Musicals didn't survive the pandemic, and its successor Landmark Musicals did not get past 2023. Marin Theatre Company, ACT, and the Magic have had truncated seasons, and Cal Shakes chose not to have a season at all. Custom Made is on life support and may never return. But there was still quite a bit of quality theatergoing to be had in the plastic year, and here are ten examples fin no particular order. Clyde's, a former Tony nominee by Lynn Nottage had a sensational production at Berkeley Rep's Peets theatre. As did the creepy and scary Let the Right One in at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Margo Hall was phenomenal in Josephine's Feast over at the Magic, and it doesn't get any better than J. Jha in Gertha Reddy's adaptation of the Mahabharata at Z Space, co-produced by the Oakland Theatre Project. Poor Yella Rednecks, Vietgone II at ACT's Strand Theatre looked at a Vietnamese refugee family in America, and Cambodian Rock Band at ACT focused on the generational aftermath of the Killing Fields and the Cambodian Genocide. Then there was Nollywood Dreams, a screamingly funny look at the Nigerian film industry, and Billy Crudup's brilliant performance in Harry Clarke at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Rounding out the top ten are San Francisco Playhouse's brilliant production of A Chorus Line, and the very weird, funny and horrifying Locusts Have No King at New Conservatory Theatre. A couple of honorary mentions go to Kander and Ebb's brilliant The Scottsboro Boys at 42nd Street Moon, and William Finn's 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at TheatreWorks. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Bookwaves Kazuo Ishiguro, in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky, recorded October 6, 2000 while he was on tour for his novel “When We Were Orphans.” The winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature, Sir Kazuo Ishiguro is recognized today as one of the world's leading authors. Nominated four times, he won the Booker Prize in 1989 for The Remains of the Day, and was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for the 2022 film “Living.” In this interview, he discusses his most recent book at that time, When We Were Orphans, and talks about how he became a writer and the relationship of his Japanese heritage to his life in Great Britain, where he's lived since he was six years old. His most recent novel, a parable, is titled Klara and the Sun, and was published in 2021. This interview was digitized, remastered and edited in November 2023 and has never been heard in its entirety. Along with Living, which can be seen on Netflix, Kazuo Ishiguro has written screenplays for The Saddest Music in the World, now on AMC plus. An Adaptation of Never Let Me Go can be found on Starz, and one of An Artist of the Floating World is on Amazon Prime. Both The White Countess, for which he wrote the screenplay, and his adaptation of the Remains of the Day can be rented on various apps. Complete 43-minute interview. What better way to ring in the New Year than with a freeranging discussion of the dreaded thirteenth arcanum of the tarot? Of all topics, surely death needs the least introduction. Or does it? To those of us who inhabit the castellated compounds of post-industrial privilege, it is perhaps too easy to forget the uninvited guest who skulks in the shadows, touching each of us in turn as he sidles past. "Nothing is certain except death and taxes," Benjamin Franklin once wrote. He was joking, of course. The truth is that death is the only certainty. Charlie Patino shined as bright as expected in his debut and won man of the match in his first senior start. Blackpool fans already have a song for the wonderkid, singing it loudly throughout the stands. Folarin Balogun scored in his debut cameo for Reims, showing his ability to find the back of the net with his head and looked up to the speed of senior football in a top 5 league. 11 Hale Enders total featured for their loan clubs this week, including a Harry Clarke goal, an Arthur Okonkwo clean sheet, and some sparkling displays of dribbling ability from Marcelo Flores. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Mika Biereth has exploded in preseason with RKC Waalwijk, scoring 5 goals and adding 1 assist in just 4 games. He's already scored with both feet, his head, and from the penalty spot, as well as exhibiting his excellent link-up play skills. Biereth isn't the only one hitting the ground running on loan, as Nikolaj Moller and Omar Rekik both have scored for their loan clubs and Harry Clarke assisted a goal in his Stoke City debut. There are 7 Hale Enders on loan so far, and likely more to come. Stay tuned... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Brooke Norton-Cuffy is a shining star for England in the U19 European Championships. His play from right back has garnered recognition from many rival fans and scouts alike. However, not many are talking about my new fascination with Norton-Cuffy's skillset. Moving pictures (de filums) were heavily censored but the state didn't officially scrutinise other visual art forms. Censure by covert means was the preferred method to control subversive art. Guest: Dr Róisín Kennedy author of Art and the nation state: the reception of modern art in Ireland (2021) · Part of the emotional response comes from a sense that modern art is conning us, hoodwinking us. Dr Róisín Kennedy· Censorship culture made access to visual art elitist. A very Happy New Year from everyone at HibsTalk and welcome to Episode 5 of HibsTalk Extra Time. This week Craig & Liam were joined by Joe Falconer to dissect the first transfer window under Shaun Maloney so far - discussing the signings of Elias Melkersen, Harry Clarke, Ewan Henderson & Rocky Bushiri as well as already known and eagerly awaited arrivals of Chris Mueller & Dylan Tait. We were joined for the first part of the show by Charlie, an expert on Norwegian football to give us the lowdown on Elias and where he can fit in at Hibs. We took some listener questions & Liam pitted Craig & Joe against each other for a fun quiz around Hibs transfer windows of years gone by. The lads also previewed the upcoming return to cinch Premiership action away to Celtic and had a discussion about a possible exit for the StarMan, Martin Boyle. It's another episode of Balls & Whistles, and because of a very busy Thursday Andrew takes you through some of the interviews he has done this week. First off, he was at the Ross County match against Celtic on Wednesday night, so there is immediate post-match reaction from Harry Clarke and then manager Malky Mackay's response to rising Covid concerns as well as the pitch invasion by Celtic fans that sent a steward to hospital. Then we move on to rugby, where clubs have played their final matches of 2021. For Highland's first team, it was a disappointing result away at Heriots, but head coach Dave Carson tells us why he does not feel the National One title - and a spot in the Premiership - is out of reach just yet. Finally focus shifts to Highland Boxing Academy, who held their first club show since the pandemic began in March 2020. Narrowly taking a winning record out of the card, head coach Liam Foy tells us what it was like for club boxing to return after such a long absence. Get in touch with the show on Twitter (@Balls_Whistles) or by emailing ballsandwhistles@hnmedia.co.uk, and thanks as always go to Forest Fires for our theme song Scared of the Dark.
This week, we hail Christian Ramirez, Dean Campbell and Scott Brown after Aberdeen's draw at Ibrox. A performance for the defender-less Dons to be proud of – despite John Beaton's soft, soft penalty award robbing them of the win - with the top-six within touching distance. We also fawn over Harry Clarke and Joseph Hungbo after Ross County's fantastic five against Dundee - their first victory in the Premiership. And Inverness' struggles to break teams down see them fall off Championship's top spot.
Tuesday, 18 May 2021, 1 – 2pm A lecture by Dr Angela Griffith organised by the Manuscript, Book and Print Cultures Research Theme in partnership with the Trinity Long Room Hub. Elizabeth Corbet Yeats used the term ‘art printing' to describe the work of the Cuala Press. She promoted the press as a hand-craft enterprise, one that celebrated the best of Irish materials and skills. Under Yeats' stewardship, the Cuala Press became a space where Irish artists had the opportunity to work in printmaking and to promote themselves professionally. This paper will explore the artistry of the prints produced, many of which were designed by her brother the painter Jack Yeats. It will examine the processes involved, including those that were at odds with other contemporary private press practices. It will also consider the aesthetic agenda of the press within the wider contexts of the period from its foundation in 1908, a time of political, social and cultural change in Ireland. Angela Griffith is an assistant professor with the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, TCD and is director of the Irish Art Research Centre, TCD. Recent and ongoing research; Cuala Press Project, Schooner Foundation 2020-2023, principal investigator in partnership with Trinity College Library, Making their Mark; Irish Painter-Etchers 1880-1930, (Dublin 2019) (co-author, and co-curator of National Gallery of Ireland exhibition of same title), Harry Clarke; Artistic Visions of the New Irish State, (Dublin, 2018) (co-editor).

Conor Tallon speaks to Michael Waldron about this weeks featured Work of The Week from the Crawford Art Gallery...Strike up the band! This WORK OF THE WEEK is a real winter warmer.Soon, up Aloft, the Silver, Snarling Trumpets 'gan to Chide (c.1923) by Harry Clarke gives us the best seat in the house, as we are placed front and centre before the artist's strange septet or musical ensemble. This watercolour study is dominated by the dramatic figure of the conductor of this not-quite orchestra. Rather than remaining faithful to his poetic source – “The Eve of St Agnes” (1819) by John Keats, in which angelic decorations are described ‘with hair blown back' – Clarke has instead incorporated the image into the conductor's appearance.Occupying a gallery space, the musical ensemble contributes to the Eve of St Agnes festivities, which are detailed in an associated watercolour study. Each figure has its own personality sketched out and evoked by the artist.Nicola Gordon-Bowe (1948-2018), the late great Clarke scholar, has suggested a source for the theorbo (long-necked lute) or sitar-playing figure to the right of the conductor: his balding head and pointed ears resemble the vampiric Count Orlok from F.W. Murnau's contemporaneous silent film Nosferatu (1922)!Harry Clarke (1889-1931), one or Ireland's most renowned illustrators and stained-glass artists, loved literature and music. At the time of making this watercolour study in 1923, he attended a Franz Liszt recital given by Tilly Fleischmann at the Abbey Theatre.Find out this and more in our new online exhibition HARRY CLARKE MARGINALIA, which runs until 14 February 2021. Em resposta a Arch F. Ramsey: "'Hoax' is precisely the word suited to Mr. Waldemar Case." ("'Lenda' é precisamente a palavra para descrever o Caso do Sr. Waldemar"). Mais tarde, quando questionado por George W. Eveleth, ele respondeu: "P. S: The Valdemar Case is a hoax of course" ("P.

Playwright David Cale, actor Billy Crudup, and director Leigh Silverman of Cale's riveting, one-man thriller “Harry Clarke” now Off-Broadway, produced by (and available at) audible. Jason Zinoman of The New York Times co-hosts with Susan Haskins.
There are several characters in the Off Broadway thriller "Harry Clarke." But they're all played by Billy Crudup -- who sure does get lonely up there sometimes.
The unique style of artist Harry Clarke and in particular two windows in St Joseph's Church, Terenure. We talk with husband and wife team Ken and Murial Ryan from Abbey Stained Glass Studios, about their work restoring these and other windows and science, meets faith when we talk with Irishman Brendan Owens about the Star of Bethlehem.
"Then once we started to get some traction and proof of concept we got a huge amount of press. When we launched Milley Cyrus actually endorsed the product on our first ever event... took a picture of herself of having a champagne ice lolly...put it on the internet - but she forgot she said she hadn't been drinking! It created a frenzy of "back on the booze with these ice lollies" in the tabloid press which created huge coverage. It was this crazy kind of adventure that kicked it all off. I speak to Harry Clarke and James Rae from Pops who produce premium ice lollies aimed at adults. These aren't any ordinary ice lollies, with everyone from Milley Cyrus to Father Christmas being snapped consuming them. Watermelon martini, Champagne, Prosecco and Pimms and lemonade are just some of the flavours. Harry and James talk to me about leveraging celebrity endorsement to grow their brand as well as raising two rounds of finance in under three years as well as entering into a joint venture with Diageo for the Pimms and lemonade product. Let's startup!

A unique combination of talents is required for an artist to move back and forth between conserving historic stained glass and creating original work that can pass the test of time. Since 1976, Mary Clerkin Higgins has been doing just that. An internationally renowned contemporary stained glass artist, Clerkin Higgins brings inspired creativity and a fascination with color to her original work. However, in the role of conservator, she checks her artistic voice and relies upon the finely honed technical skills and careful attention to detail of past masters. During the 2017 American Glass Guild conference held in Rochester, New York, Clerkin Higgins was awarded the first Nicholas Parrendo Lifetime Achievement Award. In September, she presented a paper to the Corpus Vitrearum Conservation forum, titled Bringing Back the Ghosts. An original co-founder of the American Glass Guild, Clerkin Higgins received New York’s Landmarks Conservancy Lucy G. Moses award for her work at Packer Collegiate Institute Middle School Project; and a New York Construction Award of Merit for her work at Lady Chapel project, Cathedral of St. Patrick. In 2014, Clerkin Higgins’ original creation, Oh! won the American Glass Guild’s inaugural American Glass Now Award for Excellence in the Art of Stained Glass, acknowledging the creative use of materials, original expression, aesthetic impact, clarity of narrative, and complexity of execution in the work. The 12-inch-by-40-inch piece rendered in blown glass, vitreous paints, and lead was subsequently selected for Corning Museum’s New Glass Review 36. Last year Clerkin Higgins spent considerable time conserving two 13th-century pieces, one for Harvard Art Museums from Canterbury Cathedral and one for the Baltimore Museum of Art from the Tours Cathedral in France. Higgins’ conservation work can be found in the foremost museums and public and private collections across North America. She has conserved stained glass from the 12th to the 20th centuries, made by renowned masters and notable moderns, including John LaFarge, Tiffany Studios, Henry E. Sharp, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marc Chagall, and Frederick S. Lamb. She has also worked on windows by Harry Clarke, William Morris, Daniel Cottier, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Clerkin Higgins, the conservator, currently works on three Tiffany windows for a museum in Washington DC. As artist, Clerkin Higgins creates a new window with Sabra Field for a hospice chapel at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire; a new window for a church in Winston Salem, North Carolina, filled with Rowan LeCompte windows made with Clerkin Higgins’ assistance; and a 15th- century martyr for a collector. Her personal work is on view in the juried show Workhouse Glass National 2017 in Lorton, VA, from October 28 through January 14, 2018. Higgins feels lucky to have kept busy working these past decades without the need to advertise. For 17 years she worked on more than 100 pieces in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters, all while maintaining her own studio.
The episode focuses on one of the most elaborate artworks to be made in Ireland in the 1920s, Harry Clarke's Geneva Window. The work, intended for the League of Nations, illustrates extracts from the texts of fifteen Irish writers. Clarke's innovative approach to the technique of stained glass and his wide knowledge of ancient and modern art and literature made him one of the most remarkable and versatile visual artists of his generation.
