This is one of those full-circle stories that makes our dusty hearts glow a little brighter. It's the tale of big art that emerged from a fossil-filled trash heap, came to life in Black Rock City, then returned to its source as a proud symbol of what a community can accomplish together.Tahoe Mack, a Las Vegas artist, tells the story of the Black Rock City Honoraria art piece she started when she was 15 years old. Her final Girl Scouts project became, oh, so much more. Over a few years, she learned to weld, fundraise, and work with acclaimed artists Dana Albany and Luis Varelo-Rico.Her vision drew attention to an urban park with a rich archaeological history. Built from metal detritus that had accumulated there, “The Monumental Mammoth” dazzled Burners in Black Rock City 2019, and is now a permanent installation at a trailhead near the fossil field that inspired it all, and forged new connections between dozens of people.https://www.tahoemariemack.com/themounumentalmammothhttps://protectorsoftulesprings.org/monumental-mammoth-projecthttps://www.danaalbanyart.com/mammothhttps://burningman.org/podcast/dana-albany-dreaming-in-metal-and-glass LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG
For our landmark 30th episode we talked to artist Darren Cullen a.k.a. Spelling Mistakes Cost Lives. Here in the UK, lots of people have seen his art at bus stops, on the Tube and on billboards, occupying the space normally reserved for advertisements. And that's because much of his work takes the form of commercial images, messaging and design—but turned against the giant corporations and political actors who usually have a monopoly on our attention through these channels. Darren has made short films with Veterans For Peace, produced installations for Banksy's Dismaland, co-curated The Museum of Neoliberalism in London as well as authoring countless other acts of artistic sabotage. The tone of Darren's work is comical: he makes satire. It's faithful to the format that it parodies, which often makes for nauseating viewing because the subject matter couldn't be more serious. We talk about growing up (and out of) being right-wing, how the military preys on working-class children, the porous line between politics and PR, satire and bullshit in a post-Trump world, PFI and privatisation in the NHS, why neoliberalism needed a museum, and finally about Comrade Ant'ny converting to catholicism.

Can a duct-taped to a wall banana be art? Why do people criticize Andy Warhol's creations? Banksy is the world's most famous living artist, yet no one knows who he is. For more than twenty years, his wryly political and darkly humorous spray paintings have appeared mysteriously on urban walls around the globe, generating headlines and controversy. Art critics disdain him, but the public (and the art market) love him. With Banksy: Completed (MIT Press, 2021), artist and critic Carol Diehl is the first author to probe the depths of the Banksy mystery. Through her exploration of his paintings, installations, writings, and Academy Award-nominated film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Diehl proves unequivocally that there's more to Banksy than the painting on the wall. Seeing Banksy as the ultimate provocateur, Diehl investigates the dramas that unfold after his works are discovered, with all of their social, economic, and political implications. She reveals how this trickster rattles the system, whether during his month-long 2013 self-styled New York “residency” or his notorious Dismaland of 2015, a full-scale dystopian “family theme park unsuitable for children” dedicated to the failure of capitalism. Banksy's work, Diehl shows, is a synthesis of conceptual art, social commentary, and political protest, played out not in museums but where it can have the most effect—on the street, in the real world. The questions Banksy raises about the uses of public and private property, the role of the global corporatocracy, the never-ending wars, and the gap between artworks as luxury goods and as vehicles of social expression, have never been more relevant. This week our guest is Jason Headley - a writer, director and teller of tales. In the episode, Jason talks about the risks he took along the way to becoming a movie writer for Pixar, and shares the initial reason he moved to San Francisco (one that had nothing to do with writing and his reasoning is brilliant). He talks about his creative process, how he was introduced to meditation, and why he created "F*ck That: An Honest Meditation." Tune in for a few laughs, and deep wisdoms. Jason is the co-writer of Pixar's film "Onward" which was released last year. He wrote and directed the feature film "A Bad Idea Gone Wrong" which won a Special Jury Prize at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival. His short film "F*ck That: An Honest Meditation" has been featured at Banksy's Dismaland and he's released a book by the same title with the purpose to help you find peace with the challenges that surround you, because they are (fucking) everywhere. You can find out more about Jason and his work here, listen to his meditation here, buy his book anywhere you buy books, watch the move Onward on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, and follow along with Jason on twitter @jason_headley or instagram @heyheadley. Timestamp for the episode: 8:30 Those who claim that superheroes having secret identities that nobody can figure out is unrealistic, they should check out the artist that chART will talk about in this week's episode. Banksy is the pseudonym of an England-based artist (or group of artists, as some conspiracy theorists claim) whose real identity remains a secret since they became active in the 1990s. Although their journey began as a graffiti artist, Banksy has transcended to several other mediums and disciplines, going as far as being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2011 for Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), as well arranging the installation of Disneyland's dark amusement park twin, Dismaland, in 2015. There is plenty more to be learned about this mysterious and fascinating figure, so be sure to tune in for this week's episode! Paul Holdengräber is joined by Nadya Tolokonnikova on episode 122 of The Quarantine Tapes. Nadya is an artist and activist and a member of Pussy Riot. Nadya talks about her early awareness of political and social issues coming from the environmental conditions in her hometown. Nadya emphasizes the importance of community and being informed as a key part of making change. Nadya tells Paul about what she has been reading lately and Paul asks about the writers and artists who have been her biggest influences. In a conversation that takes a sharp look at the intersection between art and politics, Nadya and Paul discuss her recent work around environmentalism as well as Nadya’s perspective on anarchy, community, and the ongoing activism in the US. Nadya Tolokonnikova is a Russian conceptual artist, political activist, and the founder of the art collective Pussy Riot, which has been the world’s most prominent art group in recent years and a global symbol of activism. In 2012 Nadya was sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment following an anti-Putin performance by Pussy Riot in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Shortly after her release in December 2013 Nadya announced the opening of an independent Russian news service Mediazona. Nadya has spoken before the US Congress, British Parliament, European Parliament and has lectured as an honorary speaker in Harvard, Cambridge, Glastonbury music festival and at many other universities and events. Nadya is a Lennon Ono Grant for Peace recipient, has appeared as herself on season 3 of House of Cards and has performed the song "Refugees In" as part of Banksy's Dismaland. She’s created the music videos "Chaika", which exposes Russian corruption, "Make America Great Again" was eerily made before the 45th American president was elected, and other law enforcement tracks “I Can’t Breathe” (in honor of Eric Garner), “Police State”, “Bad Apples” and most recently “Elections” in protest of the Russian “elections”.
No singular artist has ever been so popular or controversial as the international man of mystery, Banksy. He’s a real troublemaker on the streets, but never nefarious when he strikes. In this episode, we’ll put him on a shelf (or wall) next to Picasso, Michelangelo, and other famous artists to compare how this guerrilla graffiti artist got his start and the influences surrounding his rise to fame. Betty and Quinn discuss the famously anonymous graffiti artist Banksy. Is he overrated? Hypocritical? Brilliantly subversive? They puzzle out their thoughts on his complicated public image by examining several prominent events, including Dismaland and the 2018 shredding of one of his paintings.

Zaria Forman's large-scale compositions of melting glaciers, icebergs floating in glassy water and waves cresting with foam explore moments of transition, turbulence and tranquility. Zaria's drawings convey the urgency of climate change by connecting people to the beauty of remote landscapes. Her works have appeared in National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine, the Wall Street Journal and The Huffington Post. Her drawings have also been used in the set design for the Netflix TV series House of Cards. Her most recent achievements include participation in Banksy’s Dismaland (Aug-Sep 2015), a solo exhibition at Winston Wächter Fine Art in New York City (Sep-Oct 2015), and a four week art residency in Antarctica aboard the National Geographic Explorer (Nov-Dec 2015). Her next solo show is at Winston Wächter Fine Art, Seattle, WA, opening Sept 7th, 2017. In this episode, Zaria discusses: -Some of her earliest influences, especially her mother, Rena Bass Forman. -How a trip to Greenland opened up her eyes and heart to the topic of climate change. -Why she chooses to draw on such a large scale. -Why she uses her hands instead of tools. -The difficulty that she sometimes has in choosing which reference to go forward with, knowing how many hours she will be devoting to the piece. -How she attempts to give the viewer the experience of being where she was, and why a simple photograph isn’t enough of a reference. -Her attempt to get people to fall in love with the landscapes, because it is that emotional connection that spurs people into action. -Working with NASA’s Operation IceBridge and the new perspectives she was able to get as a result. -The fear that often sets in before starting a new large piece. -Her new body of work and how she is moving in a more abstract direction. -Her experience of being a part of Banksy’s “Dismaland.” -Details about her upcoming show. Zaria's Final Push will inspire you to have a personal connection with your work, because that it what speaks to your audience the best. Quotes: “I realized that I have to go as big as I possibly can to give viewers that sense of massiveness.” “I want to be as true to the landscape that existed at that point in time as I can.” “Things that scare me are usually a good thing. It means I’m going to learn something.” “It’s always a scary thing to start a piece that’s the biggest I’ve ever made.” “If I’m drawing what inspires me most and what I feel most excited to make, that excitement is going to translate into the finished product and make it the best that it can be.” Links mentioned: Zaria's upcoming show at Winston Wachter Fine Art Rena Bass Forman (Zaria's mother's work) Reduce Your Carbon Footprint NASA’s Operation IceBridge Zaria's TED Talk Banksy's Dismaland Connect with Zaria: Website / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter / Vimeo On the next episode: Matthew Miller : Website / Instagram Share your recent work and join the discussion in the Facebook group!

This past August-September, a seaside town in England hosted a very different kind of holiday attraction: a dystopian theme park by the anonymous street-artist-turned-legit-artist Banksy. Called "Dismaland," the park, erected on the site of a derelict lido, was actually a curated exhibition of works by dozens of artists, all of which expressed critical views of mainstream culture and politics. In this episode, we introduce you to Dismaland through a discussion of street art and Banksy's oeuvre; look closely at a few works on display; consider the ways in which Dismaland intersects with three major trends in contemporary art; and talk about the fate of Dismaland as recycled materials for a notorious refugee camp near Calais, France.

Then we ask the question whether photography an art or not, which gets us into war photography and Kevin Carter's 1993 notorious photo. The gang then talk about their own individual passions including photography, woodworking & metalworking, puppeteering, and the environment. We talk about the different challenges social we face day-to-day to pursue these passions. Inside The Mouse Castle: Disney News, Information and Commentary
Pirates of the Caribbean with the lights on, a Haunted Mansion scolding, hard root beer and coconut-flavored vodka. And yeah, Tim and Anthony talk about some Disney news too. Inside The Mouse Castle this week, we revisit a few more items from the D23 Expo and Anthony's trip to Disneyland with his parents. We also imbibe a few tasty beverages as has become our habit since we started recording the show late at night. Don't judge. Here's what else is going on: The long-rumored Jungle Cruise movie, at one time expected to star Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, is back on track, this time with Dwayne Johnson on board. John Lasseter played Jungle Cruise skipper for real last Tuesday, taking guests on a trip through the exotic waterways. And, wouldn't you know? Josh Gad was there to document it. Disney's live-action Cinderella comes out on Blu-ray and Digital HD on September 15th. In the spirit of the little cinder girl's upbeat philosophy, fans are encouraged to "have courage and be kind" at www.CinderellaKindness.com. Also available on video beginning October 13th is Brad Bird's Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson and Hugh Laurie. Tim was disappointed the first time he saw it, but not so much that he won't give it a second look. Japan's largest airline, ANA, is launching a fleet of Star Wars-themed airplanes (okay, four) featuring droids R2-D2 and BB-8. They'll start transporting passengers, both domestic and international, this fall. A federal judge refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed against Disney, DreamWorks and several other animation studios accusing them of collusion and wage fixing. This follows on the heels of a similar suit that was thrown out in April for falling outside the statute of limitations. Graffiti artist Banksy is taking a satirical shot at Disney parks with his new exhibition "Dismaland." This "bemusement park" takes up space at an old public pool in Weston-super-Mare in southwest England. Its centerpiece is a rotting, decrepit castle surrounded by a warped mermaid statue and a crashed police van. The exhibition is, of course, staffed by surly greeters and security guards. Over 50 artists from 17 countries have contributed to the project, which takes swipes, both good-natured and cynical, at not just theme parks, but at immigration laws and 21st-century activism. The exhibition will be open through September 17, 2015. Enjoy! www.TheMouseCastle.com
