The great actor of stage and screen, Harris Yulin ("Scarface", "Ozark"), returns to the podcast. He was in the 1987 film "Candy Mountain" which was recently re-released. New York City, 1980s. A struggling, deadbeat musician named Julius has fallen on hard times. With no guitar, band or paying gigs, he cooks up a get-rich-quick scheme – to find the legendary, yet elusive guitar-maker Elmore Silk. Considered one of the greatest luthiers in the business, Silk's disappearance from the scene has only made his work more coveted by musicians and executives looking to make a buck off his name. Julius agrees to track the man down and sets out on the road. Meant to be a simple journey upstate, Julius stumbles down a long, winding road full of dead-ends and wrong turns towards an eventual revelatory conclusion in the Canadian wilderness. One of the great cult classics of the 1980s and starring character actors Kevin J O'Conner and Harris Yulin, the supporting cast features real-life music legends Tom Waits, Leon Redbone, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, David Johansen and more. “A wry, laid-back Heart of Darkness" (Chicago Reader), Candy Mountain combines the keen eye of legendary photographer Robert Frank with novelist/screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer's mythic American prose to produce the quintessential road movie. "Candy Mountain" is currently available on various streaming platforms.

This week we are experiencing some technical difficulties because Apple absolutely wrecked my audio set-up with an unnecessary OS update that doesn't seem to have made anything better. That's beside the point, but I did want to apologize off the hop. Anyway. The Hunt For The American James Bond continues both in our hearts and on the show, as we dip our toes into the chilly waters of Lake Jack Ryan one last time with 1994's Clear and Present Danger, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, based on the book by Tom Clancy, and starring Harrison Ford, Willem Dafoe, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Donald Moffat, Miguel Sandoval, Benjamin Bratt, Anne Archer, Thora Birch and James Earl Jones. Patriot Games set the bar pretty low, and this movie comfortably clears it. But it doesn't hit the heights of Hunt For Red October either, leaving us with a somewhat satisfying if not overly long political thriller about drug cartels and American intelligence. There's room to have fun there if you're willing to acknowledge how skeezy the CIA actually is, but perhaps we weren't there yet in '94. Other works discussed in this episode include Poor Things, The Holdovers, Edge of Tomorrow, Top Gun: Maverick, The Flash, and 24. Plus, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One gets renamed for streaming. This is the third ADHD-DVD film with a Steven Zaillian writing credit. The previous were Mission: Impossible and Gangs of New York. If you'd like to watch the film along with us, good luck! It is not available for streaming in Canada, but is rentable on YouTube. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with a third consecutive Phillip Noyce movie, the admittedly very goofy Val Kilmer vehile The Saint (1997) that is also sadly not available for streaming in Canada. We'll be joined by gifted improviser (and J Mo's childhood friend) Mica Prazak to discuss whether it deserves to be added to the canon, or loaded into a cannon. Until then, see you at the movies!!

KIRA'S SOLEMN VOW leads to a shocking truth: vengeance is not moral. In the course of investigating a single Cardassian she comes to the realization that collective punishment of all Cardassians isn't justice, even if this particular Cardassian wants to face judgment for his people's crimes. It's one of the most intense episodes of Star Trek ever made and to help Bryan discuss this Deep Space Nine achievement is writer Andrew Bloom (Slashfilm, Consequence, The Spool). This week we say hello to the little friend as A DePalmber to ReMalmber begins with 1983's Scarface, directed by Brian DePalma, written by Oliver Stone, and starring Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia, F. Murray Abraham, Harris Yulin, Mark Margolis, and Richard Belzer. It's an opulent operatic journey to the American Dream, a slick and stylish directorial effort that truly proves subtlety is for cowards. It's an unseen from J Mo's collection that's been gathering dust for north of 17 years, and though a bout with COVID prevented him from joining us for the entire episode, Elite Prospects and EP Rinkside editor-in-chief J.D. Burke calls in and leaves a voicemail in defense of a hot couch classic, and one of his all-time faves. Other works discussed in this episode include Fight Club, Joker, Terminator: Salvation, Top Gun: Maverick, No Hard Feelings, Thanksgiving, Grindhouse, Totally Killer, The Final Girls, Freaky, Happy Death Day, Hostel, the Scream franchise, Payback, Pokerface, Paul T. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, Scarface is currently streaming in Canada on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Starz at the time of publication. We'll be back next week as A DePalmber to ReMalmber continues with Carlito's Way, a movie currently streaming on Amazon Prime in Canada. Until then, see you at the movies!

It's Die Hard in the war on drugs! For this very special episode, Phil and Liam are joined by a VERY special guest: actor, writer, director, comic book author, renaissance man and podcasting superstar PAUL SCHEER! That's right, the effervescent host of top film podcasts Unspooled and How Do This Get Made? chartered a helicopter and flew in to join Phil and Liam for an intensive analysis of this mid--90s classic! The film's complex plot is thus: after a close friend is murdered by international drug traffickers, the vengeful US President (Donald Moffet) tacitly instructs his National Security team to launch a series of secret military strikes against the parties deemed responsible. Soon the new CIA deputy director Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) discovers himself to be an unwitting pawn in a covert, illegal war between American paramilitary forces and the Colombian drug cartels. As the carnage escalates, Ryan must find a way to quell the bloodshed and expose the corruption at the heart of his own government.  CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is the third entry in the Jack Ryan film franchise that started with THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. That particular movie was of course directed by DIE HARD helmer John McTiernan, meaning that there is plenty of ‘DIE HARD DNA' in the mix here…but does this motion picture also share some key similarities with Christopher Nolan's OPPENHEIMER? The guys assess its influences and its legacy, while also wrestling with another burning question: is this the ultimate ‘Dad movie'? Paul talks passionately about his deep and long-standing connection with DIE HARD and his youthful love for all things Bruce Willis, and the guys go deep on the film's eclectic creative contributors, that includes personalities such as Tom Clancy, Harrison Ford, Philip Noyce, John Milius and Steven Zaillian. They also discuss the virtues of an outstanding ensemble cast that features the likes of Willem Dafoe, James Earl Jones, Anne Archer, Thora Birch, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Raymond Cruz, Benjamin Bratt and Miguel Sandoval. Paul even discusses the part he'd most love to play! The stacked cast makes for a particularly entertaining edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a tantalizing trivia quiz provides some stimulating brain-teasers…along with a warm and fuzzy moment or two. This highly entertaining episode is not to be missed - how DARE YOU not listen to it?! CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuYb6ZNQaZoAt the time of release, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER is streaming on Paramount + and is available to rent of buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu, Redbox, Direct TV, AMC and all the usual platforms.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's DIE HARD on a train! This time Phil and Liam discuss NARROW MARGIN (1990), Peter Hyams' highly underrated action-thriller remake starring Gene Hackman and Anne Archer. They talk about the differences and similarities to the original 1952 film noir, the Hitchcockian echoes, and the myriad of subtle Die Hard influences upon this highly suspenseful picture, that earns its place among a grand tradition of train movies. The lads also talk about their affection for the stellar supporting cast, including the two Walshes (M. Emmet and J.T. respectively), Harris Yulin, and James B. Sikking, as well as the ways that this film influenced subsequent action movies such as SPEED, UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY (Eric Bogosian forever) and UNSTOPPABLE. The trivia section goes off the rails (get it?), but the ‘Die Hard Oscars' soon bring things back on track (but do you get it?). "Laurie Anderson, Leslie Odom Jr. from Hamilton was here a couple of years ago. It was fantastic. Judd Hirsch. I got a chance to drive in my car with Charles Durning and Jack Klugman, two character actors that I admired all my life. It was a surreal experience. When I got here, I started to do some of the Shakespeare plays, working sometimes with kids from the community and professional artists. Michael Nathanson played Hamlet with us in 2005. Alec Baldwin, Eric Bogosian, Jeffrey Tambor, Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach, who lived in East Hampton about two blocks from here. They were involved in the John Drew Theater from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Through much of their lives, they were lifetime performers at Guild Hall, always in the summer doing a little something. Eli worked up until his 90s, and he was still working, as sharp as a tack. There have been so many artists here. Two summers ago, Questlove was here interviewing Jerry Seinfield on the stage and Alec Baldwin has been our board president for a number of years. He liked the renovations. He liked the show that Harris Yulin did with Amy Irving. He loved The Glass Menagerie and he loved the renovation. So he said, I want to get involved with you guys. The Hamptons is a wonderfully welcoming place to make art. I think going back to the time of Jackon Pollock and before him the tile painters, this has been an artist colony. And I think there is still a spirit of that around."Josh Gladstone has served as Artistic Director of the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall since 2000 where most recently he directed Alec Baldwin, Blair Underwood and Rob Morrow in the comedy Stan The Man by Eugene Pack, and acted alongside Mercedes Ruehl and F. Murray Abraham in Jules Feiffer's A Bad Friend, an evening celebrating the playwright's 90th birthday. At the Drew he's directed and produced such plays as Romeo & Juliet, Extinction, Steve Martin's The Underpants, All My Sons starring Laurie Metcalf and Alec Baldwin; Clever Little Lies starring Marlo Thomas; Tony Walton's productions of Tonight at 8:30 starring Blythe Danner, Equus starring Alec Baldwin and Moby Dick Rehearsed starring Peter Boyle; and The Glass Menagerie starring Amy Irving. Regional credits include Children's Theatre Co.; Shakespeare Theatre, DC; and four seasons as Artistic Director of Hamptons Shakespeare Festival.www.creativeprocess.info

After fooling around in Europe for almost a couple of years, just because I'd gotten out of the army...and didn't really know what to do or how to do it. And so I just went and while there I did some acting, but nothing very remarkable except doing a nightclub with William Burroughs. That was great fun. BackTrekking returns again to look back at the real-world inspirations of classic Trek episodes! The 20th century has been the host to an unbelievable number of genocides, across the continents of Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America and if you consider the last 50 years of the 19th century, too, you add some impressive work from North America and Australia, as well. Antarctica, thankfully, lags far behind in mass deaths. It’s foolish to believe that genocide is a modern invention, though modern weapons have certainly made it a more efficient process. But, the spread of telecommunications, journalism, and mass media has certainly made every genocide and act of atrocity more visible and more haunting. The horrors of the Holocaust stand out as almost medieval and are even more shocking when you consider that you can still email people who were victims of it. Immediately after the fall of Fortress Europe and the end of World War II, the effort began to bring the perpetrators of the Holocaust to justice, but that effort quickly became somewhat ambiguous. Many who were put on trial claimed to be “just following orders”, German citizens claimed to have no knowledge of the death camps, and the Allied authorities were more concerned with the looming Soviet menace than disrupting the lives of the Germans they would rely on to hold the line against communist encroachment. That’s where “Judgment at Nuremberg” begins. It’s 1948 and the trials which were meant to bring truth and reconciliation to the German people and the world are quickly becoming a political liability. Former circuit judge Dan Haywood arrives from Maine ready to impartially dispense justice on war criminals, but he soon finds himself navigating a morass of resentful Germans and fearful witnesses. The opposite is true of 1975’s “The Man in the Glass Booth”, in which Mossad agents kidnap a wealthy American immigrant who was secretly Col. Adolf Dorff, the SS master of a notorious death camp during the war. He is brought to Jerusalem to stand trial, ala Eichmann, for his crimes against the Jewish people. Only trouble is, gee whiz, Dorff may actually be Arthur Goldman, a Jew and a Holocaust survivor who has taken his effort to combat Holocaust denial to the nth degree. Star Trek, which has never met a historical event it couldn’t allegorize, throws its own hat in the ring with “Duet”, a DS9 episode that features Aamin Marritza, a Cardassian impersonating *another* Cardassian, Gul Darhe’el, who was the commandant of the notoriously deadly Gallitep work camp. His purpose in doing so is presumably to call attention to the Bajoran massacre at the end of the Occupation, an event that unlike our real-world Holocaust has no concentration camp footage, no somber documentaries detailing the loss of life. It’s an event that is easily dismissed by many Cardassians and Marritza is willing to cast himself in the role of the villain in order to see his people’s crimes revealed. On this episode, we discuss the complicated emotions present in these works, the multi-generational cast of prodigies that lent their talents to "Nuremberg", the open-ended mystery of the unhinged "Booth", the superlative work of Harris Yulin and Nana Visitor in "Duet", and how each reflects the unique views on the Holocaust from the eras in which they were made. We also discuss Young Sheldon books, judges judging judges, classic and modern acting styles, wacky '70s plays, bleeding feet symbolism, hanging with JC, boiling frogs, a lot of corona talk, empty wrestling arenas, dying over Bloodshot, gritty '80s punk Cardassians, stabby drunks, and our tech exchange takes a turn for the depressing! We're not recording in our usual places due to quarantining, so the sound isn't perfect. Only three more episodes to go of Third Watch and today we bring you a look at the 20th episode of season 6, How Do You Spell Belief? Is this one of the weirdest episodes ever of Third Watch? Is it odd that so much happens all on the same day in the next few episodes? Why are we all over the shop too when it comes to talking about this episode? How does this episode once again waste the opportunity to show firefighters in a bigger capacity? How did Yokas not know that being a detective would have longer hours? How great is it to have Harris Yulin in Third Watch? Are there some old school elements to this episode? When does this episode 'fall over a cliff' when it comes to the quality of how good it is? How interesting does the Cruz character arc get in this episode? How great is the actor who plays Stephen? How terrible is the vampire stuff and why the hell are we back here? Is the scene with Grace and the priest just so odd and out of place? How deep is the scene between Yokas and Stephen and the photos and should it have been in another episode? And does this episode have the worst cliffhanger in the history of Third Watch? We're so close to the end you can smell it so tune in!★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
