Over the past few years, the health and wellness space has been flooded with the concept of the "gut microbiome," or the ecosystem of microorganisms in our stomachs. Probiotics, which have become prominent on social media, are said to strengthen this bacterial community and can result in benefits like improved nutrient absorption, skin inflammation, and even mental acuity. However, this connection of the gut to the mental sphere has actually been shown in research as the "gut-brain axis" (GBA). In fact, according to a 2015 journal from the Annals of Gastroenterology, a bidirectional relationship between our gut and our brain has been shown to influence our responses to anxiety, stress, and even functions of memory through interactions with the central nervous system.We are joined today by behavioral neuroscientist, toxicologist, neuropharmacologist, and international fashion model Dr. Aya Osman. She received her BSc in Biomedical Sciences with Honors from the University of London, MSc in Toxicology focusing on the role of adenosine and glutamate receptors in cocaine addiction from the University of Surrey, and PhD in Toxicology and Neuropharmacology from the University of Surrey, where she investigated the development of brain opioid and oxytocin receptor systems in response to early life dietary manipulation. She then worked as a Toxicologist at the Centre for Radiation, Chemical, and Environmental Hazards for the governmental body Public Health England. Critical minerals are non-fuel minerals or mineral materials essential to the economic or national security of the U.S. They have no viable substitutes yet face a high risk of supply chain disruption. Layman introduces his new Ontario Depth Adaptation (ODA) project, and then discusses with Charlotte and Sophie the genesis and mission of their Thrivespring project, and the practical, political, and psychological dynamics of preparedness for an uncertain future and the likelihood of systemic disruption or collapse. Charlotte Cecil studied emergency management at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada. She has been a volunteer responder with various response and recovery groups, and worked for many years as a security consultant in the UK. Following a life-threatening incident in her early 20s, she became interested in emergency preparedness and security, which evolved into a passion for community resilience. She strongly believes that communities which engage in inclusive resilience-building help create safer, healthier and more cohesive societies. Sophie Allen studied Climate Change, Development and Policy at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, and Environmental Hazards and Disaster Management at Kingston University, London. Her professional experience includes disaster risk reduction and response, sustainable development and volunteer management. Annual burned forest area has increased by ~1,100% since 1984.In this new Q&A, Cary forest ecologist Winslow Hansen discusses why wildfires are increasing in the western US, how he and his team are projecting future wildfires and forest response, and ways that science can guide management strategies. Large fires are becoming more frequent and severe across the western US. Since 1984, annual burned forest area has increased by about 1,100%. Lives, property, and livelihoods are routinely threatened and burned landscapes can be left ecologically transformed. What is causing recent trends in fire activity? What will forests of the future look like? How can modeling wildfires and forest response guide adaptation strategies? These are among the questions to be explored. Panelists will also discuss the importance of tailoring fire and forest management to the local context, considering regionally specific factors like forest type, environmental conditions, and the presence of people. Meet the panelists Catrin Edgeley is an assistant professor of natural resource sociology in the School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University. As a wildfire social scientist, her research focuses on community adaptation to wildfire across diverse local contexts. Edgeley is particularly interested in how communities navigate postfire recovery, and how local experiences with past fire events influence responses to future risk. Edgeley holds a PhD in Natural Resources from the University of Idaho, and both an MSc in Risk and Environmental Hazards and a BSc in Geography from Durham University in the United Kingdom. Winslow Hansen is a forest and ecosystem ecologist at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Hansen is investigating the changing Earth system by uncovering rules that govern interactions among forests, disturbances, and climate. His current work is focused on how wildfires and forests are changing globally, to predict where fires will pose the greatest threat, and how landscapes will change postfire. Episodes are available HERE: More about Dr. Zelikoff: Dr. Zelikoff is a professor in the Dept. of Environmental Medicine at the Grossman School of Medicine in NYC. She has over 25 years of experience in toxicology and environmental health which is that branch of public health concerned with reducing those factors in the environment like air and water pollution that affect human health and disease. Her scientific research focuses on the toxic health effects of inhaled air pollutants like ozone and air particles, as well as effects from toxic materials from tobacco and electronic cigarettes, fires and diesel exhaust. Over the last decade, studies in her laboratory have also focused on the effects of inhaled environmental toxic materials, including electronic cigarettes during pregnancy and their effects on neurodevelopment, cardiovascular disease, birth outcomes, obesity, behavior and reproductive success. Her studies have revealed that early life exposure to e-cigarette aerosols can affect childhood behavior, brain function and lung disease in the adults and that such effects can occur even without nicotine present. In addition to a very active research program, Dr. Zelikoff is a Director for Community engagement in the Center for Investigational and Environmental Hazards working with underserved populations and Native Americans in the NYC metropolitan area. Over the last 20 years, she has also guided over 50 graduate and undergraduate students in the field of environmental health.

International Environmental Law and Environmental Hazards of the Nicaragua Canal.Discussion with Professor Daniel Magraw on the environmental consequences of the Nicaragua Canal, which planned path will cut through some of the most biologically diverse areas in the world as well as Central America's largest freshwater lake, Lake Nicaragua, the country's main freshwater supply. We will also look at whether Nicaragua is violating its obligations under international law, including numerous environmental treaties it is a party to in developing the canal through such biologically diverse territory and for failing to provide an adequate environmental impact assessment of the consequences of its construction. Daniel teaches international environmental law at John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and has previously taught at the University of Colorado, the University of California, Berkeley and Georgetown University Law Center. Before joining SAIS faculty, Daniel was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Environmental Law (CIEL) and continues to work on substantive matters with CIEL. Before joining CIEL, Daniel was the Director of the International Environmental Law Office at the U.S. Environment Protection Agency.
