Mar. 5, 2025 Dr. Simon Steel (SETI Institute)Dr. Steel discusses the Copernican revolution and how it changed humanity's view of its place in the universe. He then talked about other "Copernican" discoveries that displaced us from a central perch, including the revision of our place in the Galaxy, the discovery of other galaxies, and now our finding a remarkable number of planets (including Earth-like planets) orbiting other stars.  He explains how such discoveries give context for, and have prepared us for, the next potential Copernican revolution, the discover of intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos. He concludes by describing some of the most exciting experiments now underway to find evidence of such life among the nearest stars and busiest galaxies.  Dr. Steel is  Deputy Director of the Carl Sagan Center for Research at the SETI Institute.

Welcome to Higher Density Living, where we delve into the profound principles that govern the universe. In this episode, Alexander and Jason will discuss Exo-Biospheric Organisms. As humanity continues to expand its knowledge of the cosmos, the search for extraterrestrial life remains one of the most intriguing and significant scientific endeavors. This episode delves into the enigmatic world of EBOs, discussing their potential existence, characteristics, and implications for our understanding of life beyond our planet. This breakthrough went viral in a Reddit social forum.   The interesting part about this is not its artificial construction but the actual similarities of these organisms to the real, natural design found in our biology. Exo-Biospheric Organisms are proposed to be living entities that thrive in the harsh conditions of space, particularly in the upper atmosphere of planets, moons, or even interstellar space. These organisms would need to be highly adaptable and resilient, capable of surviving extreme temperature fluctuations, radiation exposure, and vacuum conditions.   Given the precedence of this internet sensation, EBOs are the latest in the pipeline of multinational government efforts to sustain and slowly proliferate the declassification of extraterrestrials.   Moreover, the discovery of EBOs could raise ethical questions about human exploration and colonization of celestial bodies. Implementing strict planetary protection protocols will be vital to preserve the pristine environments where EBOs might exist and to avoid disrupting potential ecosystems.   Exo-Biospheric Organisms (EBOs) represent a captivating aspect of astrobiology, fueling our curiosity about life beyond our planet. While their existence remains speculative, the pursuit of discovering these enigmatic organisms pushes the boundaries of our understanding of life's adaptability and the potential for extraterrestrial life. As technology advances and our knowledge of the cosmos expands, the quest to unveil the mysteries of EBOs becomes an integral part of the ongoing search for life beyond Earth.   The discussion then turns to EBOs, organisms believed to exist outside our biosphere that have captured the public imagination. The episode draws parallels between the design of religion and EBOs, highlighting how both resonate with individuals on a spiritual level. The hosts explore the environmental impact of humans versus EBOs and discuss the benefits of copper in human and EBO biology, suggesting artificial intelligence may play a role in EBOs' creation.   While urging a healthy dose of skepticism, we criticize the U.S. military's secrecy around UFOs and argue that independent research is needed to discern truth from misinformation. Ultimately, we argue that the objective of life is to nurture and perfect evolution as close to nature as possible. They advocate for a state of "apotheosis" where we become one with nature.   Let us join Alexander and Jason as discuss Extraterrestrial Organisms.   Please Support our sponsor TARTLE.CO. June 2012Frank Drake (1930-2022) was known as the "father of SETI science" -- he was the scientist who conducted the first radio survey for signals from extraterrestrial civilizations, and came up with the formula for estimating the likelihood of such civilizations, now called the Drake Equation. In June 2012, the SETI Institute sponsored a three-day public event called SETICon. One highlight of the program was an interview with Drake (who served as the founding President of the Institute board. )  It was conducted by SETI Institute board member and veteran astronomy educator Andrew Fraknoi.  The discussion ranged widely over Dr. Drake's career and current thinking.  It included reminiscences of Project OZMA, that first experiment searching for signals from civilizations among the stars, and his current view of the Drake Equation.  He also reflects on a number of modern developments, including the discovery of numerous planets orbiting other stars and new ways of searching for extra-terrestrial civilizations.During the Summer, when the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lectures take a vacation, we thought you might enjoy this special podcast for its historical value, now that Frank Drake has passed away.

The European Space Agency’s Exobiology on Mars (ExoMars) program includes a series of missions designed to study the potential for past life on the red planet. The first phase ExoMars was the launch of the Trace Gas Orbiter in 2016. The next step for ExoMars is the delivery of the rover, Rosalind Franklin, to the martian surface. Rosalind Franklin is equipped with cameras as well as a drill that will allow the rover to drill up to two meters and collect data from the sub-surface of the planet. An onboard laboratory will process samples and deliver them to three instruments. Minerals will be characterized by the MicrOmega instrument; a Raman spectrometer will provide data concerning mineralogical composition; and part of the Mars Organics Molecule Analyser (MOMA) will study and identify soil chemistry.

If extraterrestrial life is out there — not just microbial slime, but big, complex, macroscopic organisms — what will they be like? Movies have trained us to think that they won't be that different at all; they'll even drink and play music at the same cafes that humans frequent. A bit of imagination, however, makes us wonder whether they won't be completely alien — we have zero data about what extraterrestrial biology could be like, so it makes sense to keep an open mind. Arik Kershenbaum argues for a judicious middle ground. He points to constraints from physics and chemistry, as well as the tendency of evolution to converge toward successful designs, as reasons to think that biologically complex aliens won't be utterly different from us after all.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Arik Kershenbaum received his Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology from the University of Haifa. The crew discuss incoming Comet Atlas, parabolic orbits and the expectations for splendor or demise as it progresses through its life cycle. RC reads from his 2014 article referencing "exobiology" and the Snake Bros recall their interview with Dr. Chandra Wickramasinghe - wondering if life is prevalent across the universe, and whether or not plagues/pandemics are due to cosmic activity. Then RC digs deeper into studies that reveal concentrations of Platinum at the Younger Dryas Boundary in the Greenland Ice Sheet Project cores and at North American archaeological sites.   Support Randall Carlson's efforts to discover and share pivotal paradigm-shifting information! In Part 3 of an extended three part interview, our featured guest is again Professor Jonti Horner, the Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia. With thousands of citations, he is an esteemed Astronomer and Astrobiologist who researches Exoplanets, Exoplanet Habitability and the evolution of our Solar system. Jonti has lead the construction of the newly commissioned MINERVA-Australis exoplanet search and follow-up facility at the USQ Mt. Kent Observatory. In todays episode we hear about how the media needs to stop speculating about Earth II until we actually find one, and how often we can expect meteor impacts on earth cities. Jonti explains the origins and causes of meteor showers Our regular host Dr Ian Musgrave tells us what to look for in the night skies for the next two weeks, and in ‘Ian’s Tangent’ we find out about XXXXXXXX Now our news is truncated today, because I’m pretty determined to keep our podcasts under 60 minutes, so I’ll just give you the summary and provide the weblink for you. .1. Ironically, given Jonti’s presentation today about rogue asteroids, we hear that we had a ‘near-miss’ asteroid transit between the earth and the moon’s orbit, which was not detected till *after* the fly-by. Ooops! No need for Bruce Willis and the nuclear option. Lol That article is at tinyurl-DOT-com/hahamissed .2. The MINERVA-Australis exoplanet search and follow-up facility led by Professor Horner at the USQ Mt. Kent Observatory has seen first light and been commissioned. That story is at tinyurl-DOT-com/minervaDASHaustralis .3. Congratulations to the people in the Australian outback who thought they witnessed an alien spacecraft, and to Jonti again, who explained in the media how they had actually seen the Indian Moon mission launch. That rather amusing story is at tinyurl-DOT-com/sorrynotaliens .4. Bigger congratulations to the Indian space agency ISRO for their fabulously successful launch for their mission to put their rover and lander on the south pole of the moon. There's a great story about the trajectory they are taking at tinyurl-DOT-com/indianmoonlaunch

In Part 2 of an extended three part interview, our featured guest is Professor Jonti Horner,  the Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia. With thousands of citations, he is an esteemed Astronomer and Astrobiologist who researches Exoplanets, Exoplanet Habitability and the evolution of our Solar system. Jonti is leading the construction of the MINERVA-Australis exoplanet search and follow-up facility at the USQ Mt. Kent Observatory. In todays episode we hear about not contaminating space with our earthly bacteria as we explore the cosmos with robotic spacecraft, the history of exoplanet discovery, the different techniques used to discover exoplanets and fingerprinting exoplanet atmospheres, and how he is in a team working with NASA to confirm TESS’s exoplanet discoveries with the new MINERVA telescope facility using  'off the shelf' optical instruments at the University of Southern Queensland

Astrophiz 85: Professor Jonti Horner - Exobiology Part 1 'The Myths of Jupiter, Comet impacts & the search for life elsewhere’ + ‘What’s Up Doc’ with Dr Ian ‘Astroblog’ Musgrave Listen: In Part 1 of an extended three part interview, our featured guest is Professor Jonti Horner, the Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia. In today’s episode, we glimpse Jonti's great career trajectory and he introduces us to some of the complex myths and realities surrounding Jupiter, and Jupiter’s role in the development of life on earth. Another highlight to listen for is how astrobiology could have begun with Giordano Bruno being burnt at the stake in 1600 for maintaining that the thousands of stars were like our sun, also with planets revolving around them. Then Jonti gives us a crystal clear view of the development of astrobiology research and the current searches for water beyond our earth, ‘because that’s the best place to look for life’. You will also love his analysis of why the future is likely to see silicon-based ‘life’ representing humanity in space, and you’ll be introduced to the term ‘Panspermia’. In our regular feature of observers and astrophotographers, ‘What’s Up Doc’ with Dr Ian ‘Astroblog’ Musgrave, we set our sights mainly on the evening skies, and in ‘Ian’s Tangent’ we hear about upcoming eclipses and with the imminent 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing, how ’Snoopy’ the lunar lander may have finally been found, lost in space.

In the first half hour is KGRA's Carole Carle who discusses the connection between different paranormal phenomenon and varying scientific fact and theory. Alan and Carole also discuss hidden agendas within the alien disclosure movement. Featured guest, professor emeritus, theologian and pastor Ted Peters takes the question of “why do we exist?” into the deep outer and inner cosmos. Or did it all start on its own? Theology meets E.T. where science and religion are joined again. Ted brings up the potentially concerning thought among a growing number of scientists that we should not consider being an off world species by colonizing other planets like Mars. Ted cares deeply about our planet and makes the connection between planetary sinning and the cosmic sinner. The question is also asked: if there is a God who's creation was meant only for humankind, why create such a vast, billions of year old universe for just our short history? http://www.tedstimelytake.comPlease check out our other pages and social media! https://kgraradio.com/paranormal-now/https://www.paranormalnow.netTwitter: https://twitter.com/Paranormal_NowIG: https://www.instagram.com/paranormalnow/YOUTUBE-Paranormal Pop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz2FIUUshS8

The Definition of Life.   "To seek out new life...." Such is the mission statement of Federation starships, to discover and learn as much as possible about life in the universe. But given the diversity of life forms in the Star Trek universe, here on Earth in the real world, and possibly elsewhere in our own galaxy, how do you recognize a new lifeform as life when you first encounter it, especially exotic or non-carbon-based lifeforms?   In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison discuss the philosophical and scientific challenges of determining a precise definition of "life," both inside and outside of the Star Trek universe. Is it possible to give a definition of "life" that is broad enough to include radically different forms such as silicon-based life (e.g., the Horta in Star Trek: The Original Series) and non-corporeal life (e.g., the wormhole aliens in Deep Space Nine), but also narrow enough to exclude nonliving entities that merely mimic signs of life?   Chapters  Welcome to Episode 63 (00:01:07)  Dr. Crusher's Definition of Life (00:02:01)  Defining "Definition" (00:02:40)  Silicon-Based Lifeforms (00:47:30)  Non-Corporeal Lifeforms (01:12:09)  Other Fringe Lifeforms (01:19:30)  Closing (01:30:05)   Hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison   Production Mike Morrison (Editor) Zachary Fruhling (Producer) Matthew Rushing (Executive Producer) Ken Tripp (Executive Producer) C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer) Patrick Devlin (Associate Producer) Kay Shaw (Associate Producer) Kit Loffstadt (Associate Producer) Richard Marquez (Production Manager) Brandon-Shea Mutala (Patreon Manager)   Send us your feedback! Twitter: @trekfm  Facebook: http://facebook.com/trekfm  Voicemail: http://www.speakpipe.com/trekfm  Contact Form: http://www.trek.fm/contact  Visit the Trek.fm website at http://www.trek.fm/  Subscribe in iTunes: http://itunes.com/trekfm   Support the Network! Become a Trek.fm Patron on Patreon and help us keep Star Trek talk coming every week.
