In this episode, we tackle one of the hardest truths in entrepreneurship—knowing when a business isn't ready to stand on its own. Too many people pour thousands of dollars, years of time, and even money from family into ventures that simply aren't producing enough income to survive. At some point, determination can turn into financial damage. We discuss how to recognize when it's time to shift gears, get a steady job to stabilize your finances, and move the dream into a side hustle instead of letting it destroy your bank account and relationships. Hey, Heal Squad! Here's the thing… starting a business is hard,  but keeping it profitable and growing? That's where the real work begins. And today, Bar Rescue's Jon Taffer is telling us what to do. He breaks down why businesses really fail (spoiler alert: it's rarely just money), how ego and excuses (like fear!) quietly paralyze growth, and what real accountability actually looks like, in business and in life. We also talk about how to approach conflict in a healthier, more productive way and how businesses are leaning into wellness trends to bring in more conscious customers. If you've ever watched Bar Rescue (btw, season 10 is streaming now on Paramount!), you know things can get really heated, but Jon is sharing the #1 thing he's done to help him turn his health around. And you'll want to stay till the end,  because we reveal some seriously dirty truths about bars and restaurants… including menus, fruit flies, ice bins, salt shakers, and what you should absolutely not touch when you sit down for a drink.

Have you ever thought saving a dying business might be a fun challenge—or even a legacy move? Randy Cohen did. After building TicketCity into a $100M+ company from just $1,200, he figured reviving Z'Tejas (a beloved Tex-Mex chain in Austin) would be a way to give back and preserve something special. It wasn't. In this episode, Randy opens up about what really happened when he bought the restaurant chain out of bankruptcy and tried to turn it around. Spoiler: it didn't work. And the reasons why are something every entrepreneur needs to hear. Randy and I also talk about: What it means to be an owner vs. an operator How ego can wreck even the best intentions Why culture doesn't stick unless you're showing up every single day How COVID became the final gut punch that forced Randy to shut it all down  What it emotionally takes to walk away … and so much more! This one's raw, real, and loaded with hard-earned wisdom—especially if you've ever held on to a business too long or felt the weight of trying to keep it all together. If your business is struggling, can you save it by turning it into a nonprofit? Short answer: probably not. It's Jess Birken here, and I'm back with my co-host Meghan tackling a super common question from business owners who think running a nonprofit might be an easier path. Real Listener Question: "I'm an instructor at a small figure skating school. It's been around for 30 years, but we're not making ends meet. The current owner doesn't want to run it anymore. Can we convert it into a nonprofit so we don't have to make a profit or have an owner?" We hear this one a lot. A business isn't working, and people assume nonprofit status will solve everything. I mean, it's right in the name – you don't have to make a profit, right?! Meghan and I walk through why this logic doesn't hold up, the realities of converting to nonprofit status (hint: you can't), and what it really takes to start and sustain a nonprofit. If you're dreaming about skipping taxes and raking in grants, this episode will help you get real about what actually works. What You'll Learn: Why you can't convert a for-profit business into a nonprofit What nonprofit status actually means and why it's not a business model Why fundraising isn't a magic solution How conflicts of interest complicate nonprofit governance What to do before starting a nonprofit if you're serious about it Why starting a nonprofit requires a plan, not just a tax filing What to think about if your org isn't financially viable right now Bottom line: Nonprofit status isn't a quick fix. If your current business model isn't working, you need to solve that problem first — not just switch IRS categories and hope for the best. This week we've got a special episode, a longer one than we normally do. But when you have an opportunity, to talk to the person who built the Rotman School of Management into the powerhouse it is today, you have to use every minute you get.  Roger L. Martin was told that the Toronto's Rotman School wasn't worth his time, that it was a quote – cesspool of intrigue. Roger himself will say that he didn't do much in his 15 years as dean, just tinkering and prodding. He's a bit of an understated enigma, as you'll soon find out. But when Rotman's prestige today ranks up there with Stanford and Harvard, you can't really argue with his results.   There's so much to mine in this conversation, we thought it would be a shame to cut it down and fit it within our normal episode length. If you have the time, I'd love for you to give it more than just one listen.

Happy September, listener! I've read that September is the new New Year and I agree. As a mom we're getting back into the routine of life and there is a natural reflection that happens. In this first podcast of September I'm reflecting back on my business “failures” and sharing the lessons I took from them. I can't help myself. My human design profile lines are a 3, have to try things out for myself, and a 5, have to show people what I learned. But that doesn't make it easy. Failure (or what I have perceived as failure in the past) is my biggest fear. I've learned a lot over the last few years and hope you'll find some takeaways in this vulnerable solocast. Key Takeaways It's taken some time for me to be able to talk about my business “failures” from a non-emotional, neutral space, but I'm giving it a try. In this podcast I'm recounting my three biggest failures and what I learned from them. Failure One: Big News in June 2022 (4 min) In June 2022 I had a whole podcast sharing my big news of my realized goal of purchasing an old historic property downtown. Demo was great, but as the time came for making decisions I was totally frozen. Saboteur Assessment (8 min) My saboteur type is avoidance, and avoid I did. I knew in August that this building wasn't right for me but I didn't admit it until winter. Finally in March I met someone with big dreams and a vision for the building. Passing the building on felt right, even though I was ashamed to let go of such a publicly shared goal. “People's businesses pivot. And actually, a sign of a business that has longevity and has stood the test of time, they aren't the same business 5, 7, 15, 20 years down the road that they were when then started out.” (13 min) “You set out to save a historic building. You may not have been the person to see it through the whole process, but you still held that building and made sure it went to someone who would care about it. So you did in fact satisfy what you set out to do” - My friend Kara of the BC Barnburner (16 min) Failure Two: Business Finances (18 min) My business grew faster than the systems I had (or didn't have) in place could sustain. I waited way too long to seek help. I'm so grateful for Sheila Hansen and the changes she helped me make. We put so many systems in place, like billing for the month ahead with ACH, but she also made me examine my money mindset.  She didn't just do it for me; she coached me through. (25 min) Failure Three: Trying to Out-Hustle (31 min) I thought I could just “Do one more thing” to try to outrun the problems I had with my business administration systems. “There is no way you can outrun the systematic and structural deficiencies of a business by adding more to your plate.” (32 min) “Be clear on your end result but be flexible on the path that gets you there.” (40 min) P.S. This month marks the 3-year anniversary of the pod! It's taken on some changes over that time, like all good things do, but I'm so grateful for your support. Thanks for listening! Every week we're learning from some of the world's most brilliant minds in business. Like Jane Lu, the founder of Showpo. Jane's story is so inspiring and full of ups and downs and what really stood out to me was her sheer determination to succeed and the absolute resilience to keep going no matter what because failure just wasn't an option. I came off this episode feeling so inspired and I know you will too. Jane is the queen of building a business while having some serious fun along the way and she shares so many gems to building her biz to $100m in revenue in this episode! Stick around to the end where she shares some of her crazy stories! A great piece of advice in this episode came down to putting in place systems and processes that will mean that you can then start hiring people to work in the business, so you can start working on the business; it's the first step. It's so hard for an entrepreneur because you're so busy doing it that you don't want to slow down and think about systems, but you've got to think about the bigger picture. Build that foundation. From there on, you can start hiring for your weaknesses. Hiring people to work on the business, people to bounce ideas off. Understanding what you don't like and what your blind spots are. A bit of outsourcing but also in-housing. Before we jump in a quick reminder on the girl codeeee - you know we love it! And I'm doing a call out for our loyal listeners to be involved in our new content series where you DM me a voice note or a question about anything across business, life, or relationships to feature on the show!
