When you have to google the spelling of “cuckold",” you know you're about to drop a hot pod! The Liberty Way reads like some kind of modern Footloose, forcing students to adhere to a moral code so strict, you expect the punishments to include stoning. That's why the revelation that when “America's largest Christian university's” President Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife Becki Falwell have a “cuckold” itch, they sneak off to South Beach to scratch, its a REALLY BIG DEAL. And because Falwell Jr. had the good sense to be exposed as the world's biggest religious hypocrite during the heavy news cycles of the Trump Administration he helped create by handing America's evangelicals to Donald Trump on a silver platter, this particular scandal may have slipped past you. That's a damn shame because it couldn't have happened to a more deserving person, which is why I'm deeply grateful to Miami filmmaker Billy Corben not only for making a doc about Falwell's sex scandal, but making it so compelling you have to watch it all. And as Billy says, “good night and good cuck.” Get full access to The Cycle- On Substack at thecycle.substack.com/subscribe
In this episode we discuss the Hulu documentary God Forbid about the downfall of Jerry Falwell Jr. after a sex scandal, but this documentary is about so much more than that. Falwell Jr. is the son of the infamous Jerry Falwell Sr., the deceased televangelist pastor and founder of the "Moral Majority." Falwell Sr. spent most of his life trying to influence American politicians to support his anti abortion, anti LGBTQ and anti feminist beliefs. Fallwell Jr. worked to continue that legacy on behalf of his father and while he was personally dethroned by a sex scandal, ultimately he brought his father's mission full circle by unwittingly helping to elect Donald Trump. The award-winning Gangster Capitalism team spoke with more than 80 former and current Liberty students, faculty, staff, high-ranking administrators, and those with intimate knowledge of Falwell Jr. What emerges is the inside story of how the university, and the family who founded it, have been rocked by power, greed, hypocrisy, and of course money. The work is considered one of the artist’s most important pieces from his series of “vandalized” oil paintings and features a defaced rendition of Albert Bierstadt’s 1890 painting of Mount Rainier National Park. Kathleen discloses that if she is ever up at 3am, someone needs to put her to bed because she’s gone down a rabbit hole in a bar. TIGER KING BILL PASSES: Like many listeners, Kathleen became mildly obsessed with the 2020 Netflix series “Tiger King.” As the series shone a light on personal or private zoos and the lack of care for the exotic animals, the US House of Representatives passed the Big Cat Public Safety Act last week which bans most big cat ownership. When they gave up driving in the snow, the local townspeople put up a Facebook message asking if anyone would be able to finish the drive to the Alaskan border. Gary Bath discussed the situation with his wife, and volunteered to drive the Marchessault family to be reunited with Tim. The group made it safely to the Yukon Border crossing, and Kathleen gushes that this has the makings of a Hallmark Christmas movie.AGING POLITICIANS: As mentioned in her act, Kathleen CANNOT believe that the US political system has so many members currently active well past the standard age of retirement. Diane Feinstein (Senator, CA) just turned 87 years of age, and Senator Chuck Schumer has had several painful conversations with Feinstein about stepping down from the Senate Judiciary Panel, but Feinstein continues to tell people that she’s running for another term. 2020 CHRISTMAS STAR: Kathleen has purchased a child’s telescope, and reminds listeners of a rare occurrence set to take place December 21st, 2020 when Jupiter and Saturn will cross paths and appear to be a mega-star, or “Christmas Star.”

SPORTS and FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE UPDATE: Kathleen’s favorite St. Louis Cardinal player is Kolten Wong, who has just had his 2021 contract option denied by the team and she is devasted. MH 370 UPDATE: Kathleen is obsessed with missing Malaysian Flight 370 (as is depicted in her “Malaysian Flight 370” bit from her Bothering Jesus special) which disappeared in 2014 with 239 people onboard. Key experts involved in the search recently confirmed their belief that the Boeing 777 plunged into the South Indian Ocean about 1,300 miles off the coast of Perth in Western Australia.JERRY FALWELL JR UPDATE: In Kathleen’s ongoing obsession with the drama surrounding Falwell Jr, she provides an update on the recent lawsuit filed by the ousted president of Liberty University vs the school and his absurd insinuation that The Lincoln Project was involved in his firing. She reviews the good and bad effects of the time transition, both scientific and common opinions from her comedian friends, and asks listeners if they want to continue with this practice of changing our clocks or not. Kathleen reminds listeners to NOT blame the US farming community if they don’t agree with DST, and instead look for the positive ways that families can benefit from the change (ie: more Happy Hour time “in the light of day.”)WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen tells listeners to watch “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix, as well as “The Inventor” on HBO or Hulu.MYSTERY OF THE WEEK: Kathleen discusses the mystery behind a 23-year-old Russian genius who claims to be from an extinct Martian race. Boris has spoken of life on Mars since childhood, and states that there are many Martian children like him who have been sent on the same mission from outer space. These reincarnates of the Martian Race are commonly referred to by other space creatures as “Indigo Children.”

In this monologue, Danielle covers the headline topics surrounding Jerry Falwell Jr., Cardi B. and WAP, and sex-trafficking.What happens when we go beyond the surface level of judging what we've read and listened to about these topics and asking bolder questions? What if Falwell Jr. was crying out for help and we didn't see the signs? What if we ask more important questions about open marriages and cuckoldry? What happens when we juxtapose Cardi B. lyrics with Bible verses? Due to the rapidly-unfolding series of scandals surrounding Jerry Falwell Jr--and his wife Becki--I turned to one of the most qualified people out there who could knowledgeably discuss this story: Kristin Kobes Du Mez, recent guest and author of the recent book Jesus and John Wayne. Kristin and I try to make sense of the narratives swirling around the many scandals that have not only dogged Falwell Jr for years now, we want to know: why has it take this long for him to be removed as the president of Liberty University? And how does it fit into the larger picture of evangelical toxic masculinity and biblical patriarchy, of which Falwell Jr may have indeed served as a poster boy for years now. Supercharged 90 minute episode where we tackle Kenosha, Falwell Jr., and both conventions.
Matt Castro and Jackson Van Dyke are back to talk about the current issues of the evangelical movement. The guys discuss the hotline news about Jerry Falwell Jr, who resigned recently from his position as the President of Liberty University. The news of Falwell Jr. highlights the authority problem in evangelicalism.
Transcribed highlights of the show can be found in our episode summaries. Jerry Falwell Jr. resigned as president of Liberty University on Monday. The news came after Reuters reported that a friend and business partner of the couple had sex with Becki Falwell while Jerry Falwell Jr. watched. Falwell Jr. himself submitted his resignation only to reverse course twice. Falwell Jr. was already on an indefinite leave of absence after he posted a picture on Instagram of him posing with his arm around a woman at a party with their zippers down and midsections exposed. With one notable exception, Liberty’s board has staged largely silent in the wake of Falwell Jr.’s increasingly controversial public statements and financial dealings. For ministry boards which have run into moral or ethic issues with their CEOs, one common mistake is allowing the CEO to recommend too many board members, says Bob Andringa, the managing partner of the Andringa Group who specializes in governance and the relationship between boards and chief executives. “Who's a CEO going to recommend? They’re going to recommend friends,” said Andringa, who has written several books on board governance, including The Nonprofit Board Answer Book and Good Governance for Nonprofits. “And so when it comes down to crunch time, those friends have more loyalty to the CEO than they do to the mission of the whole organization.” Andringa joined global media manager Morgan Lee and editorial director Ted Olsen to discuss the blind spots of Christian boards, what encourages and discourages them in holding leaders accountable, and why more retired people should serve on boards. Mayor Richard J. Daley in 1968 said he ordered police "to shoot to kill any arsonist or anyone with a Molotov cocktail in his hand . . . and . . . to shoot to maim or cripple anyone looting any stores in our city." Maybe this is why Chicago didn't become Detroit. Thomas Sowell turned me on to a point: By forcibly putting down riots with overwhelming force, lives are saved. Egregious violations of basic privacy have erupted in recent days: Falwell Jr's consensual sex life, Trump's sister's phone call. And yet not a peep from anyone on behalf of privacy? The liberal assumption, in this as in most things, is that to understand is to approve (or at least to pardon), and therefore my disapproval indicated a lack of understanding. –Theodore Dalrymple
Prophetic News- Todd White moans, Paula White the heretic Falwell Jr update part two
Kathleen opens boasting her love for Dolly Parton with a few Dolly quotes, and promotion of Dolly’s version of Led Zepplin’s “Stairway to Heaven”.Kathleen expands on her Episode 1 conversation about Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado as she reads a few lines from his 1997 book “Beyond The Horizon,” which includes predictions for the future. She shares that if she could have two experiences in her life, she would want to see the HistoryMiami Museum’s exhibit honoring Mercado, and also Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul museum in Mexico City.Fast Food From the Road: Kathleen confesses that after decades on the road, she’s just tasted her first Popeye’s famous chicken sandwich. She loves Taco Bell and KFC UNLESS they are a combo restaurant, which is also how she feels about Baskin-Robbins + Dunkin Donut establishments. Kathleen is completely disappointed in how mergers like this usually result in customers needing to beg for extra hot sauce, be subject to insane new menu items such as the KFC Donut Chicken Sandwhich, or be forced to accept the loss in quality of one of her favorite treats: mint chocolate chip ice cream (WHY isn’t it even green anymore?).Parental Update: Kathleen has a phone conversation with her mom and is warned to stay out of the “doughnut hole of health insurance.” Her dad is dominating his men’s golf league, but is the only player adhering to COVID-19 cart restrictions.Sports: Kathleen provides an update on her COVID-19 Sports predictions: an update on the surging cases in her St. Louis Cardinals’ locker room (whom she refers to as “dirty birds,” her predictions on the success of the NHL’s “bubble” Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA tournament. Kathleen reviews the NCAA football conferences that have chosen to opt out of the 2020 Fall season, and reminisces how she was first introduced to good college football when the Missouri Tigers were admitted into the SEC in 2012.Controversy: Kathleen discusses her thoughts on the Dixie Chicks transitioning their name to be The Chicks, and remembers where she was and the fallout of that band’s 2003 dissidence of then-president George W. Bush at a concert in the UK. She moves on discussing public figures whom she appreciates even though they have ideological differences, and how those differences probably wouldn’t be known without social media. Kathleen includes actor Jon Voight and Jerry Falwell Jr, and the repercussions when Falwell Jr. recently posted a picture of himself on a yacht with his pants open.Lake of the Ozarks: Kathleen discusses her home at the Lake of the Ozarks, which has a new fame thanks to the Netflix series “Ozark,” but most recently made international news as local lake bars surged with people, resulting in mass spreading of COVID-19 cases. Kathleen reviews the history of the Lake, growing up as an Osage Indian at School of the Osage, and the difference between the “pre-flood” and “post-flood” communities. She shares tales of the famous Party Cove, as well as a family story of what her brother traded for outboard motor oil on a particular summer afternoon in the gauntlet. Weather Obsession: Kathleen confesses to being a complete weather junkie, and her obsession with weather and The Weather Channel. She talks about how hurricanes are named and the history of hurricane names, as well as her preferences in weather apps such as the Weather Channel app versus Weather Bug.What to Watch This Week: Kathleen is fascinated with the documentary “Project Nim,” which is the story of Nim Chimpsky, a chimpanzee who in the 1970’s became the focus of a landmark experiment to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised like a human child. She shares her opinions regarding the content, especially her hatred of a particular professor in the movie.Mystery of the Week: Kathleen provides her opinions on the Maracoxi, which are mysterious South American sasquatches.

Last week, a Houston Chronicle reporter tweeted an image from Jerry Falwell Jr.’s instagram. The image showed the Liberty University president posing with his arm around a woman at a party with their zippers down and midsections exposed. By Friday, Falwell Jr. agreed to take an immediate and indefinite leave of absence from Liberty University, which he has led since 2007 as president and chancellor. As CT’s reporting noted: During his tenure—succeeding his father and the school’s founder, Jerry Falwell Sr.—the younger Falwell has expanded Liberty into one of the biggest Christian colleges in the world, now reporting an enrollment of over 120,000 students. But his leadership has also drawn controversy, including around his politics—such as his friendship with President Donald Trump—and personal life—like photos of him and his family at a Miami nightclub. In June, Falwell apologized for a tweet that included an image of the yearbook photo from Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s blackface scandal. Dozens of black alumni said he should “withdraw the racist tweet” and resign to focus on politics. This week on Quick to Listen, we wanted to discuss how Liberty University and its president fit in the larger landscape of Christian higher ed. Bill Ringenberg is faculty emeritus at Taylor University, where he was a longtime history professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and the author of The Christian College: A History of Protestant Higher Education in America and The Christian College and Academic Freedom. He joined global media manager Morgan Lee and editorial director Ted Olsen to discuss where Liberty is positioned the Christian higher ed world, how athletics make a difference in how the school sees itself, and why it took a photo on Instagram for Liberty’s board to react to Jerry Falwell Jr. Take Quick to Listen’s survey! Oh, Liberty, what has happened to you? Once a shining beacon for evangelical conservatism, has now been rocked with scandals. Scrutiny and allegations are hitting Liberty University's emperor, dictator, grifter, president, Jerry Falwell Jr. He's cronies with Trump, a proponent of political evangelism and turned Liberty U into a cash grab through financial mismanagement. Liberty University is just a more successful version of Trump University. Falwell Jr. rules the campus with an iron fist of fake piety and conservative purity, but apparently he leads with the mantra, "do as I say not as I do." He's used Trump's fixer, Michael Cohen, to bury salacious photos and let's not even talk about his weird relationship with his pool boy. Yeah, that's actually a thing. And at the end of the day, we can rest assured that he learned it all from his dear ol' dad, Jerry Falwell. So join us today as we talk about the recent scandals that surround Liberty University. We'll also read some fun hate mail and descend into the pit of insanity with the Christian Crazy of the week. Buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride. Come along for the ride as we skewer through life, culture, and spirituality in the face of a changing world. www.SnarkyFaith.com

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode includes discussion of sexual violence. Listener discretion is advised. Today's episode continues with the subject matter of alleged sexual misconduct on the part of famous and powerful figures, and how we react to these accounts. This time, Jaye focuses on the case of Roy Moore, the former state court judge running for the US Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions in the state of Alabama. Moore, a controversial politician strongly aligned with the Religious Right, has been accused of making sexual advances towards teenagers, including a 14 year old girl, in the late 1970s. Why are many of us inclined to take the word of the accused if we can relate to them, or if they are powerful figures we like? Is “winning” more important than standing by our word?
