Links Wheatley Institute research reports Addressing Pornography Share your thoughts in the Leading Saints community Transcript coming soon Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights Kurt and Brian discuss the complexities of pornography use within religious contexts. Brian emphasizes that young adults will encounter pornography, often leading to shame and guilt. He highlights the importance of understanding the motivations behind pornography use, which can range from curiosity to emotional coping mechanisms. Brian also addresses the stigma surrounding addiction labels. He explains that only about 10% of users experience compulsive behavior, while many others face problematic use. Church leaders should focus on creating a safe environment for youth to discuss these issues. By asking questions about triggers and providing coping strategies, leaders can help youth navigate their experiences. Brian encourages a balanced approach to discussing pornography, emphasizing hope, understanding, and the potential for growth through repentance. 03:35 - Brian Willoughby's Expertise in Pornography Research 04:26 - Overview of BYU and the Wheatley Institute 05:57 - Research Impact on Policy and Society 06:57 - Teaching Future Therapists and Family Studies 07:37 - The Stigma of Pornography in Religious Contexts 08:50 - Understanding the Broader Impact of Pornography 09:51 - Meta-Analyses and Key Findings on Pornography 11:38 - The Concept of Addiction and Compulsive Behavior 12:58 - Potential for DSM Inclusion of Hypersexual Disorder 13:47 - Brain Chemistry and Pornography Use 15:29 - Distinction Between Addictive and Problematic Use 17:34 - Scripting Expectations from Pornography 19:24 - Social Media and Its Impact on Mental Health 20:34 - The Need for Open Conversations About Pornography 21:09 - The Role of Church Leaders in Addressing Pornography 22:13 - The Importance of Avoiding Labels of Addiction 23:47 - Understanding Youth Experiences with Pornography 25:56 - The Normative Context of Pornography Use 27:06 - Creating Positive Conversations Around Pornography 28:51 - The Role of Fear and Anxiety in Youth Discussions 30:05 - Normalizing Sin and Repentance 31:04 - Distinction Between Guilt and Shame 34:02 - Motivating Youth Through Guilt vs. Shame 36:57 - The Importance of Understanding Triggers 39:11 - Building Coping Skills for Youth 41:27 - Final Thoughts on Support and Guidance The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. The reality for Black individuals and families living in the U.S. is that death happens more often and earlier on than for their white counterparts. In the last two decades, these higher rates of mortality resulted in 1.63 million excess deaths for Black Americans compared to white Americans. Doneila McIntosh brings her personal and professional experiences with this reality to her work as a researcher studying the intersections of disenfranchised grief among African American families. Disenfranchised grief occurs when a loss isn't recognized or seen as valid, often the result of stigma. The disenfranchisement of Black grief is rooted in racism, which influences both the disproportionate rates of mortality and the lack of support for grief and grief expression.  Doneila McIntosh is a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota in Family Social Science with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. Doneila has a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) in Theological Studies and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology (M.A.). Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, she worked as a chaplain for nearly 10 years. We discuss:  Doneila's current research on understanding the impact of disproportionate rates of death and grief in the African American community.  Her personal and professional motivation to do this work.  The desecration of sacred Black grief spaces.  How structural racism leads to Doneila and other researchers having to “prove” the reality of disproportionate rates of death for Black people living in the U.S.  The disenfranchisement of African American grief.  How the language we use to talk about grief is rooted in culture and how that can be a strength.   The gap in the research literature about Black and African American grief.  Culturally specific interventions to support grief.  How culture shapes grief expression.  Doneila's work to become literate in the historical & current context of Black grief and the cultural strengths she uncovered along the way.  How her family honors her grandfather's legacy.  Follow Doneila on IG @doneila_mcintosh

Mom Enough: Parenting tips, research-based advice + a few personal confessions!

In many ways, our society has become more accepting of LGBTQ individuals in recent decades. But a current spike in hateful rhetoric and acts of violence against LGBTQ youth has derailed some of that progress and shaken the security of many vulnerable young people. Most of these young people already have faced challenges of bullying and isolation, as well the common fear and anxiety around coming out to their family, friends, teachers and faith community. So, what will help these young people establish security, confidence, and resilience in the face of these challenges? And what will help parents and other family members sustain loving connections with their child through what may be a difficult transition for everyone?   This week's Mom Enough guest, Derrick Jordan, is Director of the Gender and Family Project at the New York-based Ackerman Institute for Family, one of the top mental health providers and trainers of individual and family therapists since 1960. Derrick, both a licensed social worker and a pastor with a Master of Divinity degree, brings unique perspectives and experiences to his work with LGBTQ youth – and to his rich conversation with co-hosts Marti & Erin. Derrick describes his work as “navigating the complexities of faith and spirituality at the intersection of race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity and sexuality." Tune in and appreciate Derrick's warmth and compassion, along with the practical tips and helpful resources he offers.   WHAT CAN WE DO TO BETTER SUPPORT THE MENTAL HEALTH OF LGBTQ YOUTH? What did you find most interesting, helpful, or thought-provoking in this discussion about the mental health needs of LGBTQ youth? Wherever you live, work, worship, or play, what small steps could you take to help LGBTQ youth and their families feel safe, cared for and respected?   WANT TO LEARN MORE? ❉ PARENTING TRANSGENDER YOUTH: INSIGHTS FROM LESLIE LAGERSTROM & DR. ELIZABETH REEVE. Mom and blogger Leslie Lagerstrom (creator of Transparenthood) and child and adolescent psychiatrist Elizabeth Reeve join Marti & Erin for a candid and informative discussion on raising a transgender child. Tune in to learn how to help family and friends accept and support the child and develop a deeper understanding of both the risks and protective factors that influence mental health outcomes for transgender youth.   ❉ PARENTING TRANSGENDER YOUTH OR GENDER NONCONFORMING INDIVIDUALS. When young people question their gender identity or reveal that they are not comfortable with the identity they were assigned at birth, it is a deeply emotional time for the young person, parents and other family members. What parental responses will help or hinder the young person's health and well-being? What interventions, both psychological and medical, are available and appropriate? What are common feelings and concerns for parents as they navigate this major and complex change? And at what age – and to what extent – can young people be certain that gender change is the true path for them? Jenifer McGuire, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota, who joins Marti & Erin for a candid and informative discussion of this important topic.

Guest Info/Bio: This week we speak with Dr. Pauline Boss. Pauline is an educator and researcher who is widely recognized for her groundbreaking research on what is now known as the theory of ambiguous loss. All losses are touched with ambiguity. Yet, Dr. Boss's research and practice have revealed that those who suffer ambiguous loss, losses without finality or resolution, bear a particular and challenging burden. Whether it is the experience of caring for a parent who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, or waiting to learn the fate of a spouse or family member who has disappeared in a disastrous event like 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina, the experience of loss is magnified and is more significantly challenging to overcome because the loss is linked to a lack of closure. People who experience and live with an ambiguous loss find it hard to understand their situation, difficult to cope and almost impossible to move ahead with their lives without professional counseling, love and support. Since 1973, Dr. Boss has studied ambiguous loss, and trained and worked with psychologists and counselors to help individuals and families who have experienced a life-altering ambiguous loss, often described as a frozen grief, recover their resiliency despite the on-going ambiguity. Drawing on her research and clinical experience, Dr. Boss is committed to working with families to develop meaningful strategies that help them cushion the pain, cope with ambiguous loss and move forward to live productive lives. Pauline Boss received her Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975. From 1975 to 1981, Dr. Boss was an assistant and then associate professor with tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1981, she joined the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota and continued to work in that position until 2005. In 1995-96, Dr. Boss was appointed Visiting Professor at the Harvard Medical School, and in 2004-2005, she was the Moses Distinguished Professor at the Hunter School of Social Work in New York City.(Selected) Guest Publications: Ambiguous Loss: Learning to Live with Unresolved Grief; Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How to Find Hope while Coping with Stress and Grief; Loss, Trauma, and Resilience: Therapeutic Work With Ambiguous LossGuest Website/Social Media:www.ambiguousloss.comTheme Music by: Forrest Clay “This Water I am Treading & You Must Go” found on the brand new EP, Recover. You can find Forrest Clay's music on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, or anywhere good music is found! This episode of the Deconstructionists Podcast was edited, mixed, and produced by John Williamson Stay on top of all of the latest at www.thedeconstructionists.com Go there to check out our blog, snag a t-shirt, or follow us on social mediaJoin our Patreon family here: www.patreon.com/deconstructionists Website by Ryan BattlesAll photos by Jared HevronLogos designed by Joseph Ernst & Stephen PfluigT-shirt designs by Joseph Ernst, Chad Flannigan, Colin Rigsby, and Jason Turner. This episode is brought to you by Dwell. Have you found love in the pandemic? Decided it was time to break things off with someone? Anxiety, depression, and other signs of emotional difficulty are at an all-time high among young people today. While many factors contribute to that pattern during these challenging times, experts increasingly are seeing the various ways that relentless use of social media plays a role in undermining the health and wellbeing of young people (and adults too).   In this week's episode of Mom Enough, co-hosts Dr. Marti Erickson and Dr. Erin Erickson bring their own professional expertise and personal experience to their discussion of this important topic. They talk about what parents and kids need to know about the addictive power of social media and the ways social media platforms use sophisticated algorithms to maximize the time both young people and adults spend on social media. Acknowledging the positive ways social media can keep people connected with each other, Marti and Erin also highlight various ways social media often undermines users' confidence, sense of self, and overall health and wellbeing. Most important, they offer effective ways to engage kids (and all family members) in reflecting on their own social media use and coming up with strategies for managing their use in ways that are healthy and balanced. Don't miss this timely, informative discussion!   WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A FAMILY TO CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA? Schedule a time for a family meeting to consider the following four questions about your own experiences with social media. Make sure to listen to each other's responses, both positive and negative; there are no right or wrong answers to the questions.  1) How do you feel when you use social media? 2) What things does social media squeeze out of your life? 3) How are platforms targeting you so you will keep going back to their site? 4) What strategies could our family (and each of us) use to manage social media in a healthier way?   WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA? ❉ MORE THAN A BODY: REDEFINING THE MEANING OF BEAUTY. Do you worry about the harms of social media, especially on body image? Do you find that you compare yourself to others as you scroll through Instagram or Facebook? In a culture where beauty is so often the primary focus, it can be a challenge to avoid harmful self-comparisons and to appreciate our bodies (and all they allow us to do). It can also be a struggle to see that we are more than a body. Dr. Lexie Kite joins Mom Enough to discuss “body image resilience,” navigating social media without harmful self-comparisons, and becoming more media savvy as we curate a healthier “body image environment.”   ❉ TECHNOLOGY AND YOUNG CHILDREN: GUIDANCE AND INNOVATIONS. Advice and warnings about technology and young children are confusing for many parents. Susan Walker, Associate Professor of Parent & Family Education in the U of M's Department of Family Social Science, offers guidance on appropriate use of technology and the ways technology can bring parent and child together, capitalizing on the importance of face to face interaction.   ❉ TEENS AND TECHNOLOGY: ENCOURAGING RESEARCH. Conversations about teens and technology often revolve around potential risks to health and development or negative effects on interpersonal relationships. But Jodi Dworkin, professor and associate department head in the U of M's Department of Family Social Science, brings research that contradicts some of those concerns. She assures parents that technology has benefits and cell phones have not replaced teens' more personal connections with peers and parents. Knowing that some teens do have negative experiences with technology, Jodi also highlights ways to monitor use and to be alert to signs that your teen might have a problem.

The pandemic is more than a physical crisis. It’s an emotional one, too. The year has been filled with anxiety, stress and sadness — a collective sorrow. Some people are mourning the loss of loved ones to COVID-19. Millions are grieving the loss of jobs and financial stability. But there’s also a sadness that lingers just beneath the surface related to the collapse of our normal systems — education, health care, work and personal networks.  So-called ambiguous loss is harder to define, because it’s ongoing and complicated. It’s what we feel after losing the more intangible parts of our lives due to social distancing and lockdowns. So how do we cope? Bill Doherty – A House UNITED?Restoring Civic Trust in Polarizing TimesAired Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Author and Family Therapist Bill Doherty, Co-Founder of Braver Angels“We need more visionaries, and fewer divisionaries.”— Swami BeyondanandaHere is an irony supplement to munch on.America is in the midst of the most politically polarizing times since the Civil War … and yet, a 2018 Pew Research Center poll found that nearly 80 percent of Americans in each party believe it’s important for Republicans and Democrats to work together on issues.Huh? How could that be?Are we that schizophrenic … or, is there a deep longing to find our sane and sacred center at the heart and soul of who we are?Our guest this week on Wiki Politiki is family therapist and author Bill Doherty, co-founder of Braver Angels, an organization dedicated to bringing the polarized sides together to find a new angle – where instead of dehumanizing the other side, we re-humanize the other. The problem is obvious. The political narrative and discourse on both sides is to paint the other as a dangerous enemy, and the less contact we have with the other side, the easier it is to demonize them. In December 2016, Braver Angels co-founders David Blankenhorn, Bill Doherty, and David Lapp brought together 10 Trump supporters and 11 Clinton supporters in South Lebanon, Ohio for their first Red/Blue Workshop. The goal was simple. They wanted to see if Americans could still disagree respectfully – and just maybe, find common ground. The results were surprising and heartening. And I quote:“Republican and Democrat, native born and immigrant: these Americans liked each other. But first they had to hear one another’s stories. Black and white, Christian and Muslim: these Americans could appreciate each others opinions. But first they needed to see where these opinions came from. They could listen to each other’s points of view once they saw one another, not as stereotypes, but as neighbors in a country they shared.”We will be talking with Bill Doherty this week to hear more about this ongoing dialogue and project, and the implications for “political climate change” in the near future. Bill Doherty is a co-founder of Braver Angels and the creator of the Braver Angels workshop approach. Bill is a Professor and Director of the Minnesota Couples on the Brink Project in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota. Bill combines a background in family therapy and community engagement.Keep in mind that the intention of Braver Angels is not to change minds, but to change hearts so that the two sides disagree more constructively and dueling dualities can evolve into dynamic duo dance partners. If you’re ready for a true American EVOLUTION, please join us this Tuesday, August 25th, 2-3 pm PT / 5-6 pm ET.To find out more about Braver Angels, please go here. https://braverangels.org/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In the “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks) Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! Sometimes I go on Twitter – not much – but what I do notice is there are a lot of people who talk about how the system needs to change but then they don't do anything about it. My guest on today's podcast – Sara Messelt, the Executive Director of PROOF Alliance - saw a need, gathered resources, and together they did something about it. I hope you will be as inspired as I am by the end of this episode to invite or join others and go make a change in your community. Sara's origin story is a little different. She started her passion for FASD through a desire to ensure healthy families by volunteering for March of Dimes while in high school in a Youth Peer Education Network! She graduated with a degree in Family Social Science from the University of Minnesota then worked with the March of Dimes for 18 years. She has spent the last 20 years with the former Minnesota Organization for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS) – now known as PROOF Alliance. In this episode, we talk about what do we need to do as a Society to really make the deep commitment that is required to have every person have every support they need to have an alcohol free pregnancy. We also dive into: • Sara's background and the mentors that inspired her to dream big.• The philosophy that drives PROOF Alliance in its work.• The journey of rebranding MOFAS to PROOF Alliance.• The role of advocacy and a step by step plan to achieve change. Her vision for the future is one I think we all have. That one day: That child and that family have an experience of the world understanding and aligning around their disability as opposed to having it seen as some obscure thing. With the roadmap PROOF Alliance has laid out and the resources they are open to sharing, I think this is a vision we can all work toward. We know that FASD reaches into every area and it is time to break down the silos and work toward a common goal. Just like her mom challenged her to make a difference all those years ago, and the mentors along her path fueled her fire, I think you will be inspired by her and her team.Let me know what you think and what your community or you are doing to build advocacy and capacity. Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/FASDSUCCESS)

When we think about kids and money, most of us probably know a young adult who has maxed out credit cards, failed to live within a budget, been blindsided by unexpected expenses and gone running home to Mom and Dad for a bailout. So, what can we do right now, whatever the ages of our children?   Dr. Joyce Serido, from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Family Social Science, has focused her career on studying how families interact around financial matters and helping parents build effective skills and practices in what she calls “financial parenting.” Tune into this lively and informative discussion about raising kids who are financially competent. It’s a big change for parents when children begin college. Parenting college students is a new phase of parenting!   If our kids go away to school, we may wonder what is really going on in their lives. How often should we or the kids phone or text or email each other? How will we know if our kids are keeping up with their coursework or building positive friendships? Or, most important, how will we know if they are healthy, both physically and emotionally? If our kids are attending a local school and living at home, how do we figure out new boundaries and house rules to accommodate our students’ growing autonomy and maturity?   Jodi Dworkin and Marjorie Savage, from Family Social Science in the U of M’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), are familiar with all of these concerns related to parenting college students. They know the challenges can be even greater for parents of international students or parents who didn’t attend college themselves.   Jodi and Marjorie have put their knowledge and experience to work in developing a rich new website, Parenting College Students, to help parents of college students wherever they are. Marti & Erin are glad to know this website will be here for them when the next generation in their family head to college! Guest Info/Bio: This week we speak with Dr. Pauline Boss. Pauline is an educator and researcher who is widely recognized for her groundbreaking research on what is now known as the theory of ambiguous loss. All losses are touched with ambiguity.  Yet, Dr. Boss’s research and practice have revealed that those who suffer ambiguous loss, losses without finality or resolution, bear a particular and challenging burden.  Whether it is the experience of caring for a parent who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, or waiting to learn the fate of a spouse or family member who has disappeared in a disastrous event like 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina, the experience of loss is magnified and is more significantly challenging to overcome because the loss is linked to a lack of closure. Boss was appointed Visiting Professor at the Harvard Medical School, and in 2004-2005, she was the Moses Distinguished Professor at the Hunter School of Social Work in New York City.
