Inflammation is part of the body's defense mechanism. It is the process by which the immune system recognizes and removes harmful and foreign stimuli and begins the healing process. Inflammation can be either acute or chronic. However, harmful stimuli may not be so foreign, and can actually be induced by ourselves. Body shame, weight stigma, weight bias, is sizeism. Sizeism is a prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person's size or weight. This means that there is an ever present and chronic level of stress and negativity about their body. This stress, induced by emotional or mental negativity, can influence food choices. Often, we use hyper-palatable foods to help cope or soothe ourselves under these stressful situations. And, what's ironic is that stress is that very stimuli that increases inflammation. So is it the food or the stress that's leading to inflammation. In this episode I'll discuss the interplay between food choices, mental health, and inflammation. I will discuss... What inflammation isThe types of inflammationThe effects of inflammation on our health and longevityWhat we don't know about inflammationDiscuss how inflammation is connected to our nourishmentHow inflammation is connected to sizeism or weight stigmaProvide you with One Small Bite to manage inflammation

Just when you thought topics couldn't get more obscure! You may think it is far-fetched to say there is a connection between oral hygiene and fertility, but think again! Studies have shown that poor oral hygiene has been linked to fertility issues in both men and women and the root cause is almost always the same - inflammation. In this case, rooted in the proliferation of bad bacteria. Without good oral hygiene practices, we get a build-up of bacteria. It spreads to various parts of the body causing systemic inflammation to occur. This inflammation leads to fertility issues in both men and women alike as it can creep to a cellular level. Think sperm issues, egg quality challenges, miscarriage, autoimmune infertility and more. And issues don't stop there. Even after conception, during pregnancy, poor oral health is linked to gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, preterm labor and low birth weight. But this podcast isn't all about visiting the dentist. In this session, I aim to teach you how to foster the health of gums and teeth, without having to blast your mouth with fluoride and chemicals. Join me to learn about the ways in which you can avoid dental trouble. Hint: My answer might surprise you! You'll Learn:The ways in which poor oral hygiene can cause systemic inflammationThe research on how it can affect your ability to conceive The dangers of the chemicals introduced in dental offices How to avoid dental health-related issues with lifestyle changes Do's and Don't of dental hygiene products Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! There is no denying that western medicine has its importance when it comes to dealing with major illnesses, but there is a huge disconnect in our world when it comes to taking care of ourselves in between doctor appointments. The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes continues to rise, and we need to take action of our health instead of relying on medication, which doesn't come without many side effects that we need to be aware of. Today's guest is very passionate about helping others create a plan to stay on top of their own health.Mary Yuter worked as a cardiac ICU nurse in New York City for 13 years. Mary wrote her book Heart to Soul Cardiac Wellness as if she was having a heart-to-heart conversation with you. As a nurse, Mary saw the need to provide people with more practical, holistic health and wellness information to apply in their daily life, complementing their doctors' medical plan, in order to maximize their overall health possibilities. In this episode, Mary dives into the topic that so many people are sick due to their bodies being out of homeostasis, and what we can do live a vibrant life instead of just existing. Although our genetics can play a factor in the diseases we may be prone to, we have control over our habits and environment and need to take charge of our health.Key highlights:Our body isn't sick from a medicine deficiency, it is sick from not being in homeostasis due to environmental factors, foods, and toxic pollutants. Disease processes start when our body can't keep upWhat clues inflammation can give us and what its purpose isThe number one thing that we can give up to reduce inflammationThe problem with western medicine is we don't go to the doctor until we're sick. Inflammation and the Mediterranean DietThe https://www.yourdoctorsorders.com/2022/08/the-modern-mediterranean-diet/ (Mediterranean) Diet is the most anti-inflammatory diet studied. The inflammatory response is the body's mechanism to fight infection, repair itself and rid itself of cancer. Inflammation is a coordinated response to trauma, infection, and cancer. Without inflammation, we would be dead within twenty-four hours. Too little or too muchToo much inflammation results in wanton destruction of tissues, pain, fevers, and misery. It is associated with heart disease, cancer, aging. It is that delicate balance of inflammation we need. Does diet play a role with inflammation? The answer is "sort of." Short Course about InflammationInflammation is involved in: Wound healing, removing dead cells - breaking them down into components so they can be recycled Removing and destroying bacteria Inactivating and eliminating viruses Destroying cells that have changed into cancer cells Repairing injury from infection Destroying parasites Removes toxic chemicals The immune system is one branch of the inflammatory response. Five Signs of InflammationThe five signs of acute inflammation and their Latin names: Redness - in Latin this is called rubor. Swelling - in Latin this is called tumor. Fever - in Latin this is called calor Pain - in Latin this is called dolor Secretion - in Latin this is called https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(89)92957-7/fulltext (fluor) Medical school teaches inflammation as one of the first series of lectures. Simple InflammationYour finger was hit with a hammer. You have an injury to your finger. Some cells are injured. The cells send a distress signal, and immediately white blood cells begin to swarm into the area to help the injured cells. All that extra blood flowing to the area will lead to redness (rubor) and swelling (tumor). Soon, the finger will feel a bit hot (calor) and will have pain (dolor). Some cells are so badly injured that they are no longer viable. Your inflammatory reaction breaks down these cells, removes the debris, and recycles the parts to create new tissue in the area. Unwanted InflammationI love nature walks but like to avoid Poison Ivy. Sometimes, we want to decrease the immune response. Inflammation is the response of our skin to poison ivy. We reduce the immune response by reducing hives and itching. Rheumatoid arthritis is another example of unwanted inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease. The resulting inflammation leads to pain, fever, and joint destruction. The aim of the treatment is to reduce the inflammatory response that saves joints and improves well-being. The inflammatory response of COVID, influenza, or the common cold is reduced by the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin or Motrin. Acute Disease and InflammationHeart disease is partially the result of inflammation. When you have a heart attack, the coronary arteries are blocked. As a result, a part of your heart muscle is without oxygen. The cells send out inflammatory signals, and you begin to feel pain (dolor). If the blood flow is restored, your cells can heal, but if it takes too long, some of those cells will die. Then your body will get rid of those dead cells and replace them with scar tissue. The result is that your heart becomes less effective. Cardiovascular disease and inflammationPlaque formation in the arteries is the result of genetics, https://www.yourdoctorsorders.com/2022/08/the-modern-mediterranean-diet/ (diet), and inflammation. The increased cholesterol, either from the genetics or from a diet high in saturated fat, is deposited in the arteries. When cholesterol enters the artery wall, the body's inflammatory response tries to get rid of it, causing inflammation in the arteries. Did you know that 18-year-olds already have signs of early plaque formation in...

He has an extensive research background in the fields of molecular medicine and microbiology. His particular expertise lies in gut commensal spore bacteria microbiology. He's been a guest on the show before to educate listeners about probiotics and the connections between your microbiome, inflammation and immune function. This time, he's sharing exciting research about a probiotic strain that's tackling the gut-brain axis, called Bifidobacterium longum 1714™.Kiran says, “One really important message that I want people to really wrap their heads around and understand when we're talking about the gut-brain axis is, of course, the gut. A healthy gut is incredibly supportive to the brain. It supports the brain in a number of really important critical functions like recovery, for example, or production of serotonin and dopamine and all these important neurotransmitters, but on the other end of the spectrum, an unhealthy gut is not only not supportive, but it's arguably one of the most toxic things for the brain.”Big topics covered in this episode include:Basic mechanisms by which the gut microbiome can influence neurochemicals and brain inflammationThe gut-brain connection as it relates to stress coping and mental healthHow cortisol and interleukin 6 drive stress response and inflammation in your whole bodyVariables that can cause a breakdown or dysfunction in the psychobiomeTherapeutic interventions, including psychobiotics that can help correct gut-brain axis dysfunctionKiran's great at explaining the science so you clearly understand what the studies mean and can apply new knowledge to your own biology. Three of the biggest barriers to long-term weight loss I often hear are: negative self-talk that leads to self-sabotage; a lack of healthy boundaries with little time and energy to focus on YOU; and frequently putting the needs of other people above your own - at the expense of your own health. Dr. Jane Tornatore has a PhD in Family Social Science and Family Therapy. As a recovering perfectionist, she knows the pain of being bogged down by old beliefs, feeling responsible for everything, and never quite measuring up to expectations. Through her own ongoing inner growth work and exploration, she continues to discover the freedom and peace that come from questioning old beliefs, being gentler on herself, and living more from her heart, not expectations of others or old beliefs. You'll find this episode extremely valuable if, like me, you're a recovery perfectionist and people pleaser! Here's what we cover in this episode:Why removing “should, must, have to, and need” from your vocabulary can drastically reduce your unconscious stress. Why Dr. Tornatore pivoted from 20 years working in Alzheimer's research to Family and Marriage therapy. What is a thought inhibitor, and how do they get in the way of following-through on our good intentions? If you struggle with overeating, emotional eating, food addiction, or binge eating disorder, this interview will give you ideas and inspiration to gain control over your food habits. Here's what we cover in this interview: The rule that started Dr. Livingston's end to binge eating. Why “loving yourself thin” often doesn't work for overeating. The parts of the brain you NEED to know about for overeating. Vital information why we can't love our way out of an addiction - those two parts of the brain don't work well together. Why some food companies are taking money OUT of the nutrient-density of food and INTO colorful and creative marketing. What your salt, sugar, and starchy food cravings tell you about your underlying emotions. Are you lonely, stressed at work, or stressed at home? How Glen discovered his “inner pig” and how this concept changed his life. Are there actual differences between overeating and food addiction? What percentage of people who struggle with overeating can regulate their “trigger foods” versus needing to abstain from them completely?CoachingIf you're ready to lose the weight for good, you've come to the right place!Join our online insulin resistance weight loss program, Zivli, to learn the science behind weight loss and habit change so you can lose weight, get healthy, and prevent disease. Many women start their weight loss attempts at the action step and get frustrated when they fail to follow-through. While beginning with your beliefs and thoughts isn't as fun or sexy, it's far more effective than starting ANOTHER weight loss program without realizing why you keep jumping from one program to the next, leading to yo-yo weights, a slower metabolism, negative self-talk, and massive frustration. Former Mrs. Nebraska, Season 2 Titan Games contender, wife, mom of 3, entrepreneur, and OBGYN, Dr. Jaime Seeman's story will inspire. She shares her own experience with reversing her insulin resistance, prediabetes, and hypothyroidism. After menopause, a woman's risk for hypothyroidism, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis all increases. The common thread to these conditions is insulin resistance. Properly dosed, administered, and timed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help reduce your risk for these conditions. Research by the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine studied the effects of coexisting asthma and obstructive sleep apnea on sleep architecture, oxygen saturation and systemic inflammation in women. Three hundred eighty-four women ages 20 to 70 years underwent overnight polysomnography. The subject also completed questionnaires on airway diseases and sleep complaints. The study analyzed the effect of asthma, OSA, and the combination of asthma and OSA on objectively measured sleep quality and systemic inflammation.Asthma and OSA show higher levels of inflammationThe study found that the group with both asthma and OSA had higher CRP and IL-6. CRP is a type of protein that is associated with inflammation in the body and can cause unexplained exhaustion, pain, muscle stiffness, soreness and weakness. Very high CRP levels can also cause symptoms like headache or insomnia. IL-6 is an important mediator of fever and of the acute phase response. An elevated IL-6 may mean that the person tested has an inflammatory condition.Less Quality Sleep for those with Asthma and OSAThe group with both asthma and OSA also had a longer sleeping time in stage N1 sleep and stage N2 sleep. This group also had less time in REM sleep or “rapid eye movement” sleep than the control group with no asthma or OSA.Stage N1 sleep occurs right after you fall asleep and is very short (usually less than 10 minutes). It involves light sleep from which you can be awakened easily.Stage N2 sleep lasts from about 30 to 60 minutes. During this stage, your muscles become more relaxed and you may begin to have slow-wave (delta) brain activity. As REM is often considered the most important and most restorative sleep stage and individuals with both asthma and obstructive sleep apnea get less of it, the study concluded that individuals with both asthma and obstructive sleep apnea are strongly associated with poor sleep. Asthma and Obstructive Sleep Apnea sufferers also have higher levels of CRP and IL-6. These markers denote higher levels of systemic inflammation which can cause fatigue, fever, and joint and muscle pain.Treating OSAAirway and Sleep Group employs the latest technology in treating obstructive sleep apnea. Your path to a better night's sleep begins with a comprehensive examination and diagnosis. Learning how to lower insulin resistance after menopause will help you lose menopause belly fat. Is saturated fat good or bad? Nina Teicholz's book, The Big Fat Surprise, took the diet industry by storm. In it, she discusses the science and politics of fat, and red meat. Learn why butter, meat, and cheese belong IN a healthy diet during this interview. While the whole-foods, plant-based diet is being touted as the healthiest diet for humans, if you already have insulin resistance (which 85% of adults do), this approach won't be the most effective for you to lose weight and keep it off. While you may have heard that saturated fat is linked to heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, Nina provides a compelling argument otherwise based on thousands of hours of research. She talks about what's wrong with the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020 Update, and benefits of eating red meat. If you're one who's been struggling with wanting to eat more fat, but afraid that eating a low carb high fat diet isn't healthy, this interview will give you a fresh perspective and peace of mind. Learn the top 3 things women get WRONG about weight loss. These 3 weight loss mistakes may be what's keeping you on the diet roller coaster and preventing you from seeing long-term weight loss that you want and need for your health. Most women can't lose weight because they fail to recognize these mindset blocks because they've been ingrained from different diet programs or intuitive eating programs. Lasting weight loss requires habit change with an optimizing mindset and strategy. If you don't have the right mindset going into weight loss, no program will work. If you don't have the best strategy, the strongest mindset will fall short. You need both a strong weight loss mindset and optimized weight loss strategy to get long-term weight loss results. Ryan and Hillary Lampers are the husband and wife the team behind “Hunt, Harvest, Health,” a health and wellness company dedicated to promoting a healthy backcountry lifestyle. They offer everything from a Podcast, Nutrition Consultations, A Western Hunting Summit, and even natural supplements. Ryan and Hillary are passionate about helping others achieve a healthy lifestyle and have the experience and knowledge to do just that.On this episode of The By Land Podcast, I sit down with Ryan and Hillary to discuss the benefits of CBD for backpackers. This is, as we all know, resonably new territory for the majority of the population, but as I'm sure you've heard by now through the grapevine, CBD is a pretty incredible and NATURAL supplement you can use to battle a number of ailments, to include inflammation while on the trail. For my PCT hike in 2017, I popped Ibuprofin 3 times a day for 5 months straight and it worked, but I'm also not one to rely on medication for much and it bothered me that I was taking so much of it. This is why I wanted to learn about the benefits of CBD from Ryan and Hillary. We cover not JUST CBD, but how to achieve a healthy body AND mind. Hillary takes this episode by storm and deep dives into the science behind what is happening in our bodies so if you're looking to gain a better understanding of how everything works, this is the episode for you!
