We inaugurate the late Japanese master Shinji Sōmai with a discussion of his beautiful, melancholy coming-of-age drama Moving. The film follows the young Ren as she navigates her parents' recent separation, balancing loyalties to both her mother and father, dealing with gossiping classmates, and making attempts to reconcile the marriage. With a characteristic sensitivity and perceptiveness for the experience of youth, Sōmai excavates a universe of detail from the film's simple premise, arriving at a profoundly moving and cathartic emotional climax. We begin by discussing Sōmai as director, his style, and what we think might have drawn him to stories about the occasionally painful experiences of youth. Then, we explore how the film elicits nuance within the childhood experience of familial separation, acknowledging both the grief intrinsic to such experiences and the role children play as emotional anchors for their parents. Finally, we examine Sōmai's considerations about modern Japanese life and how he rallies against conservative social positions on divorce through the film's delicate character work. Top Gun is on trial this week. Is it a movie Maverick? Or is it a cooked Goose? Dave defends the classic, arguing that it was one of the biggest films of the 80s, with great action sequences and a stellar soundtrack. Gav is in prosecution and counters that the action is short and not very sweet, and that most of the film is focused on a poorly-written love story. There's an impression of Tom Skerritt and a quiz all about movie nicknames. All that plus the usual great debates and banter from the gang. We feel the need. The need to plead... our case! www.filmsontrial.co.uk/275

Muhammad Ali is widely recognized as one of the greatest athletes of all-time and one of the most important figures of the 20th century. In addition to his long and celebrated career as a boxer and three-time heavyweight champion of the world, Ali changed the conversation about race, religion, and politics in America. Ali's refusal to be inducted into the U.S. military during the Vietnam War on religious grounds—a profound act of resistance that resulted not only in Ali's three-plus-year exile from professional boxing, but also a criminal conviction and five year-prison sentence that Ali almost had to serve until it was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court—represented a pivotal moment of the 1960s. Ali has been the subject of numerous books and documentary films, including the Oscar-winning When We Were Kings (1996) and The Trials of Muhammad Ali (2013). He is also the subject of the 2001 Hollywood biopic, Ali (co-written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Will Smith as Ali), which focuses on the ten-year period from Ali's capture of the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston in 1964 to Ali's fight against George Foreman in Zaire in 1974 (the famed “Rumble in the Jungle”). Once a sharply polarizing figure, Ali became one of the most celebrated and eulogized individuals in America, whose rich, if not incomparable, legacy reverberates around the world today. Film writer and critic Brendan Hodges joins to discuss Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, a self-proclaimed love letter to the filmmaker's WWII veteran father and all the fighting men of the Second World War. Visceral, upsetting, and deeply conflicted, the film formally disavows many of Spielberg's more populist tendencies as director and creates a tension between the valorizing, mythic tone of its war movie forebears and its own aims as a subjective, hyperreal chronicle of boots-on-the-ground combat. Is the film a viscious, jingoistic piece of propaganda? A formally exhilarating but ideologically dubious piece of late 20th century moviemaking? Or is it, as our guest asserts, one of the most misunderstood texts in popular American cinema? We begin by reflecting on Saving Private Ryan's legacy and cultural context, its place as a cultural behemoth and its application as a load-bearing hagiography for American militarism that found new purchase in a post-9/11 context just a few years after its release. Then, we examine Spielberg's formalism, how images contradict text within the film, and what to make of the movie's propositions on its own terms. Finally, we address the movie's evocation of difficult realities of warfare, and ask if the film meets the mandate and responsibility of such images; how history and contemporary context color our interpretations, and what value there is in continuing to return to such questions in our current moment. In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of a revered American actor who found fame in a leading role across many different genres... Vel Kilmer! His career page on the stage, beocming the youngest person at the time to be accepted into Juilliard, and get his start in an off-Broadway musical The Slab Boys (1983) with Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn. His overnight breakthrouhg came with the 1984 comedy Top Secret!, marking his first major motion picture role, launching him into mainstream Hollywood almost instantly. A couple years later, Kilmer was fimly planted in the Hollywood A-list with his role as Iceman in Top Gun (1986). Kilmer became the go to leading man for every genre throughout the 1990s, raning from the likes of Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993) to Batman in Batman Forever (1995). The films he starred in would grossed more than a whopping $3.8 billion worldwide, which include but not limited to Top Gun (1986), The Doors (1991), Tombstone (1993), and Batman Forever (1995), Heat (1995), The Prince of Egypt (1998). His final role came in the form of a reprisal of Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick (2022). To learn more about this episode and others, visit the official Cinema Sounds & Secrets website!

For the "Audience Interrogation" cycle's Suggestion Box episode, Emilio, Julian and Madeline go with a pick that's been a long time coming: 'Bamboozled', Spike Lee's unapologetically confrontational satire from 2000 about racial stereotypes and the media. The group welcomes back multi-disciplinary artist, professor, and fellow appreciator of satire Idris Goodwin to the discussion, and consider why, now a quarter of a century after it was initially released, 'Bamboozled' continues to captivate audiences and grow in esteem. They discuss the film as a time capsule of the year 2000, how the mini DV format it's shot on creates a feeling of discomfort, how Spike Lee spotlights multiple forms of black expression in his films, the many cinematic influences the film wears on its sleeve, why Paul Mooney's scene is so pivotal to the narrative, the film's prescient "defense strategy" scene, and much more. It's an earnest and far reaching conversation about why this particular Spike Lee Joint is, whether you like it or not, one of the writer/director's most essential and important works. Filmmaker Christopher Jason Bell (Miss Me Yet, Attention Shoppers) joins us to discuss Last Action Hero, a meta action comedy featuring too many ideas, a healthy serving of great jokes, and a fascinating reckoning for its star Arnold Schwarzenegger as he was aging into the second act of his movie star career. We begin with a conversation about the action hero vehicle, its dominance in the 1980s, and its turn to self-reference and parody in the early 1990s. Then, we explore Last Action Hero's bizarre combination of action movie tropes and lighter cartoon comedy logic that makes its satirical targets more difficult to identify. After, we address the ways the film incidentally exonerates itself from some of the more ideologically thorny tendencies of police films by embracing fantasy and drawing attention to its artifice. Finally, we spend some time discussing Chris's latest brilliant and beautiful film Failed State, how its component parts all came together, and what it means to be a filmmaker in our moment of constant crises and social alienation.Follow Christopher Jason Bell on TwitterWatch Chris's films on Means.tv Watch the trailer for Failed StateGet access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Send us a textWelcome back to DMR!Sinners (2025) is a bold, genre-blending film that fuses supernatural horror with rich musical drama, all set in the haunting backdrop of 1930s Mississippi. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie follows twin brothers—played by Michael B. Jordan—who return to their hometown to open a juke joint and escape their violent pasts. What unfolds is a slow-burning, atmospheric story layered with blues, gospel, and soul music that doesn't just underscore the scenes—it drives the emotion and tension. The visuals are lush and haunting, and the story avoids cheap scares in favor of deeper psychological and cultural unease. What makes Sinners stand out is its emotional depth and originality. Instead of relying on franchise familiarity or overused horror tropes, it dives into themes of redemption, racial trauma, faith, and family legacy with sincerity and craft. Jordan delivers a nuanced dual performance, and the supporting cast brings authenticity to the story's gritty, soulful tone. Critically acclaimed and a box office hit, Sinners has earned major awards and resonated with audiences for being more than just a horror film—it's a powerful, character-driven experience that lingers long after the credits roll. This film has a near perfect score on RT from both the critics and audience. Also, the BIG NEWS, DMR is now part of the Audible Creators Program!
