It is a memoir of her journey into the science of attachment, a summary of what is known about attachment and the process of how this important theory was established. In this interview we talk about some of the basic features of attachment. The relationship an infant forms with their caregiver puts down a psychological foundation that biases development in certain directions. For the purpose of this podcast, we note that an insecure attachment increased the probablility of developing an anxiety disorder. However, developmental trajectories are complex and nothing is fixed in stone.  Bethany Saltman has many facets to her work, including being a writing coach and she can be found at https://www.bethanysaltman.com/strange-situationn.com

Many of us worry that our child may not be securely attached. How can we understand the science behind attachment to better understand our kids and their needs? And how do we promote a secure attachment?   Joining me for this conversation is Bethany Saltman, author of Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey Into the Science of Attachment. It's inspired by the birth of her daughter in 2006, who she loved dearly, but feared she was failing.    Why? Because she was not the kind of mother she hoped to become. Bethany spent ten years teaching herself the science of attachment, traveling to labs, trainings, and archives, in an effort to try to discover what kind of mother she really was, and if she was good enough for her daughter.   What she learned changed everything about how she thought of herself, her childhood, and the nature of love.   We go into: [2:25] Different attachment styles and why they're important [6:00] Where secure attachment comes from [13:35] The power of attachment and repair  [14:20] Why people make such a big deal about attachment styles [24:10] What Bethany learned through healing her insecure attachment style [27:40] Advice Bethany would give to her younger parent self  Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey Into the Science of Attachment, published in April, 2020 by Random House, is her first book.    Bethany is a bestselling book coach, helping writers envision and execute their books—from pitch, to platform, to proposal, to publication, to PR. , She is also an editor and researcher. This week Kevin and Niseema continue thier conversation about Attachment Theory with Bethany Saltman mother and author of Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey Through the Science of Attachment. We continue talking about the Strange Situation Procedure developed by Mary Ainsworth, in the 1970s as a way to observe the attachment styles of children between the ages of 9-18 months. In one stage of the procedure, the mother/ primary caregiver and a stranger sit in a room with the child, and then the mother leaves the room.  The way the child reacts to the mother's leaving and her return is carefully observed and information about the attachment bond is categorized into an attachment style. After documenting tens of thousands of separations and reunions three distinct patterns emerged: securely attached, insecure anxious, and insecure-avoidant, with 65% being securely attached. As Bethany elaborates: "You don't have to be anything special to be securely attached or to raise a securely attached child. All you have to do is to have some experience and some comfort with your own emotions, your own difficult feelings."In our adult life, these attachment patterns can become more apparent when our relationships are under stress like economic strife, pandemic quarantine, illness, or conflict. If your attachment pattern is insecure when stress arises you can feel like a loss is imminent, and a return to connection is impossible. If you both have a basis of secure attachment you can probably weather any of these storms. Knowing your attachment style can help you understand how you are in relationships.----------------------------For more information and to contact Bethany Saltman go to:www.bethanysaltman.comFor more information or support contact Kevin or Niseema at info@thepositivemindcenter.com, or call 212-757-4488. These are challenging times and we hope this episode served to validate and ease your anxiety about what you may be experiencing. Please feel free to also suggest show ideas to the above email. Thank you for listening,Kevin and Niseemawww.tffpp.orgwww.kevinlmhc.comwww.niseema.comwww.thepositivemindcenter.comPRODUCTION CREDITSOpening Music : Another Country, Pure Shadowfax, ShadowfaxBreak Music: Geoff BradyEnd Music : TFFPP Theme - Giullian Goiello for The Foundation for Positive PsychologyThe Positive Mind is produced with the help of:Engineering: Geoff BradyProducer/ Research: Connie Shannon Website Design and End Music: Giullian GioelloMarketing and PR: Jen Maguire, Maguire PR, jen@maguirepr.com

"We heal the past by embodying the present. Now, now, now, now, now. That's all we have. When we change the present, history changes." ~ Bethany SaltmanBethany Saltman is a phenomenon. She's also the author of a brilliant and poignant book called Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey into the Science of Attachment (Ballantine Books, 2020). This book absolutely floored me. “A fascinating mix of memoir and the history of a major revolution in the scientific theory of the relationships we form in our first year of life…” —BOOKLIST (Starred Review)It was her pursuit of the answer to a daunting question - what kind of mother am I? -  that captivated me. This question led her to search for, find, and follow clues that offered no map, no timeline, and no guarantees...and also eventually led to unforeseen discoveries about herself, her family, the science of attachment, the guiding figures she would meet along the way, and of course the scientist she would only know through archives, records, recordings, and notes - Mary Ainsworth, the attachment researcher who captured Bethany's imagination and heart. From her Zazen meditation years seated on her cushion “being with what is” to the years of searching to discover what is, what was, and what might be, Bethany teaches us what it means to see ourselves and our children more clearly. We talk about the practice of awareness, the power of sensitivity, the reality of presence, the process of seeing and trusting in ourselves, self-care as child-care, and the predictive power of delight. This conversation is just a wonder. LISTEN, SUBSCRIBE, SHARE and FOLLOW us on social @theforeseeablenowpodcast. LINKS:Strange Situation is now out in paperback.Bethany's website https://www.bethanysaltman.com/Strange Situation ~ video https://www.bethanysaltman.com/related-videosA couple of Bethany's acclaimed articles:https://www.thecut.com/2016/06/attachment-theory-motherhood-c-v-r.htmlhttps://www.thecut.com/2014/10/we-fought-for-affirmative-consent-in-the-90s.htmlBethany's "Secret Teachings Study Group" ~ https://www.bethanysaltman.com/mary-ainsworth-attachment-study-group

June is allllll about attachment!  We kicked off this special series on attachment last week with my interview with author Bethany Saltman and her memoir "Strange Situation."Today- we are going back to basics.Attachment is something that gets a lot of airtime but also, a lot of confusion.  In today's episode we'll talk about John Bolwby and how he brilliantly noticed that attachment is about physical (and emotional) survival. We explore the difference between safe haven and secure base, and about how attachment is both about connection and autonomy. We look at the three attachment behaviors Bowlby identified:Seek, monitor, and maintain proximity Use the attachment figure as the secure baseFlee to their attachment figure when afraidGoing Back to Basics certainly means highlighting the work of Mary Ainsworth, which ultimately led to The Strange Situation and the attachment classifications we now know as secure and insecure. Bethany Saltman is the author of part memoir part biography Strange Situation- A Mother's Journey into the Science of Attachment.  Bethany is a professional researcher, writer, and longtime Zen student who went searching for what she felt was missing when she was a new mom. Like myself, Bethany discovered Dr. Sears' The Baby Book on attachment parenting when she was pregnant with her now 15-year-old daughter (my son is 15 and almost the exact same age!) and had expectations about what motherhood and parenting was going to look like: a blissful time where she enjoyed the natural awakenings of maternal instinct.Which did not happen.  Bethany remembers that she wasn't patient with her daughter.  She didn't feel very loving toward her.  And ultimately she felt broken because Dr. Sears had promised in his book that attachment parenting was easy because it ‘feeds on a mother's natural intuition.'  Bethany stated she was doing her best but also doing a lot of things wrong as a mom- and couldn't figure out why.   So she went on a deep-dive journey into exploring the science of attachment, in particular Mary Ainsworth and The Strange Situation.  Bethany's exploration into the science of attachment led her to the conclusion that behaviors have actually very little to do with attachment. There isn't a checklist.  Raising a child with secure attachment isn't about breastfeeding or co-sleeping. It has to do with how you think and feel about your attachments and how this is transmitted from mind to mind, generation to generation. This episode is particularly fitting Valentine's Day week as Bethany Saltman talks about how the science of attachment can bring us closer to ourselves and those we love. Bethany is an author, editor and researcher, and her work can be seen in magazines like the New Yorker, New York Magazine, Atlantic Monthly, Parents, and many others. Bethany's first book, Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey Into the Science of Attachment. It's inspired by the birth of her daughter in 2006, who she loved dearly, but feared she was failing. Why? Because she was still her, and not the kind of mother she'd hoped to become. She spent ten years teaching herself the science of attachment, travelling to labs, trainings, and archives, trying to discover what kind of mother she really was, and if she was good enough for her. What she learned changed everything about how she thought of herself, her childhood, and the nature of love. She is incredibly proud that, among other incredible reviews and accolades, New Scientist called Strange Situation One of the Best Science Books of 2020. She is also a bestselling book coach, helping writers envision and execute their books—from pitch, to platform, to proposal, to publication, to PR. Bethany received a B.A. from Antioch College, where she was one of the architects of the nation's first Affirmative Consent Policy. She went on to receive her M.F.A in poetry from Brooklyn College, where she studied with Allen Ginsberg and published her work in many national journals. She is honored that Antioch awarded her their 2020 Rebecca Rice Award for Achievement in Profession.   Shownotes: www.drkaitlin.com

Summary In this episode, Kimberly and Bethany discuss “The Lost Daughter” (2021) which follows Leda (Olivia Colman), a middle-aged woman on holiday in Greece as she recalls her experiences as a wife, professor, and mother. The film has received much critical and popular attention, but particularly caught the attention of Bethany Saltman, researcher of attachment, for its complex and nuanced perspective into Leda's experience as a mother. Together, Kimberly and Bethany analyze the film from their backgrounds in attachment, somatic experiencing, and nervous system perspectives. Bethany and Kimberly discuss the film on a live Zoom call.   Bio Bethany Saltman is a longtime researcher, writer, Zen student, and author of “Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey into the Science of Attachment,” a book that explains the research and theories behind attachment in addition to describing Bethany's own complex relationship with parenting. Additionally, “The Lost Daughter,” directed by Maggie Gyllenhall, is the visual adaptation of the novel written by Elena Ferrante, premiered on Netflix on December 31, 2021 with Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, and more. What She Shares: –Why Bethany and Kimberly wanted to discuss the film –How the film portrays motherhood and humanness in its complexity  –Conflict, messiness, and resisting binaries in womanhood and motherhood –Symbolism of various aspects of the film   What You'll Hear: –Bethany's background and interest in the film –Split between staying connected to self and child –Desire and motherhood –How film relates to human experience –Physicalness of motherhood portrayed in the film –Leda and young mother's fascination with each other –Physical differences between younger Leda and older Leda –Who is the lost daughter? –Differences between fathers and mothers leaving children –What makes us feel found versus lost? –Why Leda takes the doll –All characters searching to be found –Containment of feeling found –Pendulum between lost and found/attached and contained –Doll as a compulsion, wish fulfillment, trying to go deep into meanness –Crippled by shame causing a dorsal reflex –Layering of sexuality between Leda and Nina –Symbolism of the snake, doll, and worm –Generational attachment is unbreakable (despite pain, trauma, etc) –Ending of Leda being dead or alive –What makes Leda “alive, actually” –Daughter calling Leda after bad haircut demonstrates attachment –Resisting cultural urge to label Leda as good/bad –Village-mindedness versus isolated parenting –Trauma within the film, flashbacks within films as constricting –Trauma as a catch-all for stress, meaningful experiences, etc. –Puritanical demand for everything to be good and if not it is traumatic/wrong –Leaving space for messiness, complexity, contradictions, and ambivalence in human experience –Leda not as a traumatized human, just as a human –Trauma narrative has become another cliche or attempt to understand difficulty and complexity –Assumptions of lack of resilience in cultural understandings   Resources Website: bethanysaltman.com IG: @bethany_saltman

Revisiting The Science of Attachment with Bethany Saltman Bethany Saltman, author of, "Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey into the Science of Attachment," introduces us to the Strange Situation Procedure developed in the 1970's as a way to observe the attachment styles of children between the ages of 9-18months. In one stage of the procedure the mother, or primary caregiver, and a stranger sit in a room with the child, and then mother leaves the room.  The way the child reacts to the mother's leaving and her return is carefully observed and information about the attachment bond is categorized into an attachment style.  This procedure revolutionized the understanding of child and adult psychology specifically in relationships and bonding. Join us as we discover how knowing about your attachment style provides a clue as to how you manage the stresses of relationships and parenting as an adult. Knowing this, you can start healing relationship wounds and foster secure relationships with your children and loved ones. ------------------------For more information and to contact Bethany Saltman go to:www.bethanysaltman.comFor more information or support contact Kevin or Niseema at info@thepositivemindcenter.com, or call 212-757-4488.

If you've ever wondered what kind of a parent you are, and whether your kids are going to wind up spending the equivalent of a college degree in therapy (or maybe they already have), I think you'll be grateful for my conversation with Bethany Saltman. Her journey as a mom and her book Strange Situation: A Mother's Journey into the Science of Attachment is a gift to every parent, who like me, has been bombarded by well-intended advice about how to be the best parent in the world. In some ways Bethany is just an average mom. But she's also a mom that—for much of her life—questioned if her mom ever loved her and in turn, questioned a lot about her own parenting. Bethany's a writer, and she became obsessed with a woman named Mary Ainsworth. Really obsessed. Mary Ainsworth was a pioneer in the psychology of child development—she died in 1999. And she came up with a procedure to systematically study how attached a child is to his or her caregiver. This is in the 1960s. Now terms like “secure attached,” "anxious attached," "avoidant attached," are tossed around pretty commonly if you eavesdrop into consultations with child psychologists and counselors. And the key to this diagnostic label is that attachment is, bar-none, the most researched area of psychology. It is bedrock. And it predicts mental illness and stability in adulthood. According to Saltman, “Attachment is if you can receive your child when the child asks you, in a time of stress. And the way that we are able to do that is that we need to be able to receive ourselves.” It's so refreshing to hear Bethany tell us we don't have to be perfect parents to the best parents for our children and I hope you'll share it with moms and dads and grandparents and anyone that might ever consider being a parent. The science is fascinating but I really loved that this was a coming-of-age story about motherhood that explored her own upbringing to who she became as a parent. We talked about expectations about what motherhood "should" feel like, Bethany's Buddhist practice, growing up in a 1970's household of "benign parental neglect," and unpacking the heavy things she was carrying from her childhood in order to be the parent she envisioned for her daughter.

“If we accept where we are, then we can actually manage our neurosis and we can be kinder, we can be more attuned, we can be better parents, and we can be better parents to ourselves.” ~Bethany Saltman Our host Sarah Buino welcomes author Bethany Saltman to share the lessons she learned while writing Strange Situation: A Mother’s Journey Into The Science Of Attachment. Bethany and Sarah explore the different roles that curiosity, delight, anxiety, shame, and acceptance play when looking at parent-child attachment, and ultimately one’s connection to themselves. Bethany’s journey of researching and ultimately writing about attachment theory began when she became a mother. Motherhood can unleash a wide-range of emotions for many new mothers. For Bethany, she was surprised by the duality of feeling an unwavering maternal love for her new baby, while also experiencing strong resentment, anger, and pain in motherhood. After jumping at the opportunity to write a column for a local magazine about being a Buddhist mother, she embarked on a 10-year quest to understand her struggles. This led Bethany to delve into the world of attachment theory - one of the cornerstones of the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) in addressing Complex Trauma.  Her research on attachment led her to the works of the late Mary Ainsworth, a developmental psychologist and attachment researcher. In the 1970s, Ainsworth devised a study to observe attachment between children and their caregivers. Dubbed the ‘Strange Situation’, the study is, as Bethany describes it, an elegant formulation of how attachment systems work. Sarah and Bethany discuss the connection between Ainsworth’s Strange Situation narrative and NARM’s core teachings about attachment, relational, and developmental trauma. NARM therapy supports the connection within a person to themselves, which in turn allows for deeper connection to others.  Bethany, who shares openly that she is a client of NARM Therapy, reports her embodied learning that “the other side of shame is radical acceptance.” This honest and moving conversation weaves together exploration of self-inquiry, self-love, and how to take a second look at shame in order to heal from developmental trauma.   Bethany Saltman is an author, award-winning editor, and researcher. Today Dr. Dan welcomes author Bethany Saltman to discuss her new book STRANGE SITUATION: A Mother’s Journey into the Science of Attachment.  Her fascinating discussion with Dr. Dan about parenting, attachment, love, and the current pandemic is riveting and revealing.   In her 2016 New York Magazine feature that went viral, writer Bethany Saltman asked: “Can Attachment Theory Explain All Our Relationships?”.  She wrote about how surprised she was by her anger and frustration as a new mother, and her desire to find out what attachment (or a lack of secure attachment) might have to do with it all, ultimately discovering that attachment isn’t a checklist of behaviors developed by physical closeness but the product of secure relationships from one’s own past. While attachment science describes how we relate to others, it also shows us how truly entwined the success of our relationships is with our deepest sense of who we are.    Bethany’s book STRANGE SITUATION grew out of this article;  the book is a memoir hinging on science, biography, psychology and spiritual practice, and an indirect look at parenting, and how we are all interconnected by the feelings of attachment, but not by what experts and others typically suggest, or by co-sleeping or  baby slings but instead.    Dr. Dan and Bethany unravel what attachment is and how it happens. The good news:  the actual science of attachment makes it clear: every single one of us is attached, though some more securely than others. Dr. Dan and Bethany agree that who we are -- and our own self-awareness -- is enough for attachment.      “At the heart of the attachment system is a primitive kind of call and response that keeps the species alive.” And that’s what we all do—keep our kids alive, even those of us who work outside the home and supplement with formula.  Bethany’s book shifts paradigms by demonstrating that from an attachment point of view, self-awareness is other-awareness. Self-care is childcare and therefore we’re all attachment parents. There’s no other kind.   Dr. Dan and Bethany also explain and explore: Being “Attachment Aware” Shame and Guilt Self-Care Adult Attachment  Experts (Mary Aisnworth) Myths (Dr. Sears) Delight as the “North Star” Bethany’s Parent Footprint Moment In addition to being an author, Bethany Saltman is also an award-winning editor, mindfulness mentor, and researcher. Her work has appeared in magazines including the New Yorker, New York Magazine, Atlantic Monthly, Parents, and many others.
