Reading Wrestling

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2021 53:31

Your lovable group of misfit wrestling readers is back again, this time to talk about one of the most beloved and reviled figures in professional wrestling--managers.Existing somewhere in the hinterlands between a sports agent, a boxing trainer, and a hip-hop hypeman, the manager is an extension of a wrestler's character. The manager eloquently speaks for his or her client, instigates feuds, illegally intervenes when the ref is not looking, and generally serves as a catalyst for chaos.  We kick it off by trying to define the somewhat nebulous role of the manager. "What would you say...you do here?" Dave talks about the manager as an extension of a wrestler's character, and Chris suggests that being a manager is an act of care--speaking on the mic to help develop a character and make it work. Noell sees the role as one of crowd interaction, getting the viewers hyped up about the narrative happenings. As part of this question, we talk about a range of managers, including "Classy" Freddie Blassie, "Captain" Lou Albano, Don Callis, Gary Hart, Jimmy Hart, Woman (Nancy Benoit), and Reginald (the Sommelier). On Jimmy Hart, Chris notes how you always believed he was working for his client--to the point where he would be wearing a blazer with his client's face airbrushed on the back!--and strove to be "punchable" as would Noell put it. We also talk about how Nancy Benoit is believed to be the first female manager (versus other roles like a valet or handler). Noell's History Corner takes us back once again to the beginning, to the period at the infancy of modern wrestling known as The Pioneer Era (c. 1898-1942). We discuss Billy Sandow (the namesake of the former Damien Sandow) and his role as an early manager, doing  real-world work like making sure his clients, including Ed "The Strangler" Lewis, got paid. In the 1930s, Frank Smith, who managed Jim Browning, was also a writer for The Chicago Tribune. We close up the show with our favorite moments that were built around a manager's performance. Dave takes us back to Bob Backlund and the baggage created when his manager threw in the towel on him. Noell brings us to a favorite moment, when the star-bedecked Miss Elizabeth runs into the ring to save the Macho Man from Sensational Sherri's ire and reignite their romance. And Chris brings us to the second greatest betrayal of all time, which involved the Undertaker and Paul Bearer. We hope we managed to pull off a good episode for you, and we would love to hear from you on Twitter or via email with your picks for best manager!

Saturday Night's Main Event is a sports entertainment television program that was produced by the World Wrestling Federation (now known as WWE). Premiering in 1985, the program originally aired on NBC as an occasional replacement for Saturday Night Live on its weekend broadcast schedule. The program aired on an infrequent basis on NBC until 1991, then aired twice on Fox in 1992 before coming to an end. At the time of the original airing, it was a rare example of professional wrestling being broadcast on an over-the-air commercial television network after the 1950s. It coincided with and contributed to the apogee of the "second golden age" of professional wrestling in the United States. In a time when weekly programming consisted primarily of established stars dominating enhancement talent, Saturday Night's Main Event was made up almost entirely of star vs. star bouts, including title matches and specialty matches such as steel cage matches, handicap matches, etc. When WWE's flagship show, Raw returned to the USA Network in 2005, Saturday Night's Main Event was revived in 2006 as a "special series" to air on occasion on NBC as part of a deal between WWE and NBC Universal. The Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brand rosters were featured on the show.On this historic cardyou will hear about these awesome matches!Barry Windham, Mike Rotundo & Ricky Steamboat (w/Captain Lou Albano) vs. George Steele, Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik (w/Freddie Blassie)! For the WWF World Heavyweight Title its Hulk Hogan (w/Mr. T) (c) vs. Bob Orton (w/Roddy Piper)! In another big championship match we have for the WWF World Women's Title, Wendi Richter (c) vs. The Fabulous Moolah! And in the MAIN EVENT it'll be Pete Dougherty vs. The Junkyard Dog!Sit back relax and enjoy the show!

Not a lot to work with on this episode of HDTGB which covers, My Breakfast with Blassie. So, this podcast episode contains more substance than this movie??? Heck, this episode of HDTGB has a longer run time than My Breakfast with Blassie. In fact Zane & Jake have a far more in depth conversation about hand washing than Andy Kaufman & Freddie Blassie in this movie??? Mostly because Jake & Zane's hand washing conversation details the hygiene habits of a certain $5 Wrestling superstar. As always for corrections tweet at Jake @manscoutmanning or email him at Jake@SSLShow.com. This week, it is our privilege to bring you an interview with TV producer and New York Times bestseller, Keith Elliot Greenberg! You may know him from co-authoring Ric Flair's, Freddie Blassie's, and "Superstar" Billy Graham's autobiographies (among many, many others). We talk memories of "Classy" Freddie Blassie and the man who had the largest penis in professional wrestling and how his misadventures shaped the WWE! An incredibly fun conversation you don't want to miss! Topics discussed: Keith's memorable write-up on Randy after he passed away, Freddie Blassie's knack for exaggerating the truth, Bruno Sammartino saving Freddie's life from the mafia, vicious ribs played in the locker room and why Ric Flair (who was revered amongst the boys) would get ribbed but Randy would not, Angelo Poffo's thoughts on ribbing, which manager quit the WWF and threatened to burn down wrestlers' homes with their children inside due to wrestlers leaving “treats” in his shoes, Lanny's memories of Freddie from when he was younger and living in Hawaii, Freddie's regret on being an absentee father and how he sadly died before making peace with his children, the love/hate relationship between Freddie and Lou Albano, the reason Freddie never drank, what stopped Freddie from partnering with Gorgeous George and Don Carson, the mental sickness of Dr. Jerry Graham and how he attempted to steal his dead mother from the hospital, who had the largest penis in professional wrestling and how his man part changed the wrestling landscape forever, how the autobiography of Iron Sheik was co-written by Greenberg but was deemed too colorful to ever be published, the time all the boys in the back sang in the tune of John Lennon about Iron Sheik's umpteenth return to the WWF after one of his many drug charges, a deeper look on the story of Hacksaw Jim Duggan getting suspended after being caught in the car with Iron Sheik with marijuana and cocaine right before he was set to have a massive push, what makes a good heel according to Nikolai Volkoff, Lanny discusses going 20% heel on commentary for New Japan, and so much more! Also in this week's show: Lanny and JP discuss their friend "Mean" Gene Okerlund getting involved with The Genius Cast, Chicago winters, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan's health, Jake "The Snake" Robert talking "bullshit" on a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan "Experience" podcast, Lanny's memories of Newfoundland and singing old traditional Newfoundlander folk songs, a fan writes a "thank you" card to Lanny, how Angelo Poffo's relationship was with Pat Patterson and Ray Stevens, the story behind Lanny's "Killer Bees-esque" trunks from old promo photos, why Lanny was once billed from Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, the content of an exchange between Randy Savage and Donald Trump at Trump Plaza, Lanny's thoughts on the Bushwackers' Jamison, Randy and Liz separating on screen but being together still in real life, Lanny's thoughts on Liz and Randy's breakup, whether or not there's an ICW tape library, and so much more! This is a jam-packed show you don't want to miss! Recommended reading to go along with this week's show: The Night Bruno Sammartino Saved Freddie Blassie's Life The Time WWE Hall of Famer DR. December 21st, 1998: Vince McMahon leaves the arena to go train for the Royal Rumble, and so he leaves his son Shane in charge for the night. However, that may prove to be a mistake as an out-of-his-element Shane ends up booking himself into his very first wrestling match against Mankind. Triple-H & X-Pac team up to face The Rock and a man who is also making his in-ring debut: Test! Mark Henry & D'Lo Brown are scheduled to face The Headbangers, but "Sexual Chocolate" may not be able to resist the advances of Terri Runnels and Jacqueline. Ken Shamrock puts his Intercontinental Title on the line against "Badd Ass" Billy Gunn.... or does he? WWF Hardcore Champion The Big Boss Man squares off with "The Road Dogg" in what is supposed to be a non-title match, but Jesse James may be able to convince him to put the belt up for grabs. Five weeks after being pushed off the TitanTron, Road Warrior Hawk returns to the WWF and reveals some dark secrets about his relationship with Droz. Even though The Blue Blazer was unmasked last week, the caped superhero returns to seek revenge on Steve Blackman. Gangrel steps into the ring with Al Snow, and a post-match "bloodbath" may cause Al to go completely insane (well okay, more than usual). The Acolytes take on J.O.B. Squad members Bob Holly & Scorpio in what turns out to be the final "Raw" match for the man formerly known as Flash Funk. Plus, Jeff Jarrett rants about what pisses him off, "Classy" Freddie Blassie dresses up as a perverted mall Santa Claus for some reason, and The Corporation shockingly adds a new member to its growing ranks! Meanwhile in WCW, we get the final episode of "Nitro" before the controversial "Starrcade 1998" pay-per-view, with the highlight of the show being Scott Steiner mocking someone for using steroids (yes, seriously). It's another pay-per-view week, as the guys break down Payback, despite The Main Event being late to the show. It's ok though, as another Washington player, linebacker Trent Murphy, picks up the slack as a guest picker. They ask if Seth Rollins needs the win over Samoa Joe, if Bayley should drop the title in her hometown, and what the hell is a House of Horrors match. In segment 2 (35:00) they shift over to Smackdown, and look at the big win by Tyler Breeze and Fandango. What does that win say about the state of Smackdown's tag division, and is it a step in the right direction? Plus, Nakamura's odd segment, Rusev's decision to hold out before a title shot, and Jinder Mahal stealing the WWE title. In segment 3 (1:09:30) they're joined by NFL and DC-area legend, Doc Walker. He talks about growing up watching wrestlers like Freddie Blassie and Mil Mascaras, and getting to see Braun Strowman dump the ambulance a few weeks ago. He talks about some of the guys he tried to get into wrestling, including some Redskins legends, and why he likes to see guys move from football to wrestling. After the OG leaves, the guys wrap up by talking about CM Punk on MTV, Mauro Ranallo's departure from WWE, and they cast Vince McMahon's biopic.

We welcome back Vandal Drummond (@vandaldrummond) from the Luchaworld podcast for a variety of subjects. We talk the Reyes de Aire match between Barbaro Cavernario and Volador Jr and its polarizing finish, what they have left for the rematch and Cavernario's main event future. We also talk about the recent CMLL legends show and how not all 50-+ year old wrestlers are like Negro Casas and Negro Navarro. Next, Vandal explains how he acquired some of the infamous Monsul's Powder, made famous by an angle with John Tolos and Freddie Blassie in 1971. We discuss other blinding angles and, based on the Last Battle of Atlanta footage, the importance of context when watching a match from the past cold. Then we discuss the European vacation Vandal and his wife took this summer, including being in London right after Brexit and Paris right after the Nice attack following Euro 2016. He also mentions what city (home to a former podcast guest and friend of the show) they loved so much they inquired about retiring there. We end with talk of the next Luchaworld podcast with Alfredo Esparza (@therealfredo) and some of the other shows Vandal has done recently, including the 605 Superpodcast (@605pod).
