Dallas Morning News (DMN) publisher Grant Moise explains the decision to reintroduce the public editor position despite industry trends of cost-cutting, stating, "We looked at data points, we looked at our own internal reasons why subscribers were leaving us, and we just decided we couldn't afford not to make a bold move like this. So, we said, some papers will say, 'They can't afford it.' We said, ‘We can't afford not to do this.'" Stephen Buckley, who recently began the role of public editor at DMN, explained: "I'm a bridge between our audience and the newsroom. So, as I get feedback from readers about our work, I will pass that on and investigate and inquire. I'll be asking questions about their coverage of stories and issues." Buckley added, "Independence is a really important part of this job, and, almost by definition, that means that it's going to be lonely sometimes, and that's okay.” Buckley's impressive journalistic background includes over 11 years at the Washington Post as a local reporter and as Africa and Brazil bureau chief. He also spent over seven years at the St. Petersburg (FL) Times (now Tampa Bay Times) in senior management positions that included managing editor, moving eventually into the Time's parent company's Poynter Institute as dean of faculty. In 2021, he accepted a position at Duke University as the Eugene C. Patterson professor of practice and public policy studies, which he will maintain as he works for DMN. During the interview, Moise expresses optimism about the journey ahead, anticipating both successes and challenges. He emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and improvement to enhance the organization's journalistic standards. Moise further explained that reintroducing the public editor position at the Dallas Morning News reflects a strategic effort to rebuild trust and credibility in journalism. He reflected that: “32% of people in Gallup polls trusting the media these days, which means two thirds don't really have any trust.” Moise and Buckley both expressed a shared hope that this move would enhance the newspaper's reputation and strengthen its relationship with the community.
New series of related courses at Duke University explore civil discourse and democracy. --- Today's guests argue that the January 6th storming of the Capitol in the United States is a stark example of the violence that can come from the way in which people talk to each other across the political divide. To address the issue, Duke faculty members Stephen Buckley and Sue Wasiolek have developed a series of courses for students focused on civil discourse and democracy. Their goal is to “deepen understanding of how public debates shape–and are shaped by–policymakers, higher education, and the media.”

Today we welcome Peter Hine and Stephen Buckley of the Vayse podcast Peter C Hine is a lawyer, a writer and a dirt worshiping heathen. Stephen James Buckley is an electronic musician and audio producer. Their podcast was born out of their experiences and exploration into the world of the weird and the mystic. Hello, I'm Stephen Buckley, and this is part 2 of Genesis 3, working verse by verse through the pivotal moment in the history of man, shortly after the creation week. In part one we witnessed Satan as the serpent deceive the woman; she ate; he ate; and when he eat everything changed. God inquired of the couple beginning with Adam as head, and began his judgment with the serpent, before turning to the woman, and today we are going to look at the remaining verses 17-24, beginning with Adam's judgment and the aftermath: the consequences immediate, lifelong, and those that remain. Let's get straight into it. Adam is held responsible for his own sin but also the corporate sin of his family and humanity as representing leader, and all under his rule are affected in his judgment. The buck stops with him. This priest-King is not immune to discipline. Prepare to sin, prepare to suffer.
Hello, I'm Stephen Buckley, and we're in a series working our way through the grand narrative of the Bible, from Eden to Zion, in which you will build a biblical worldview, to function by as a Christian and mature in your relationship with Christ Jesus. Having taken a substantial detour since chapter 2 of Genesis, to step back and develop in our understanding of the aspects that make up the biblical worldview – God's law and order, the canvas of existence or what we call the field of play with its historical and eschatological narrative, and the players or characters that are active within – so that we can understand who the Creator God is, how he has designed and established his universe, his boundaries, how we are interact with others and so forth… and today we are turning to Genesis 3, the pivotal moment in the history of man, up until the cross. Understand what took place in the garden, and you better understand the questions of suffering, temptation, judgement, the devil's schemes, the nature of man, the foundation of the gospel, and you blame God less for your own circumstance. Such is the significance of what took place, this will be the first part, with part 2 shortly after. We're going to be patient with the text and let the questions and answers soak in and simmer.
This is second part looking at the order and economy of man. Hello, I'm Stephen Buckley and we're in a series where you will build a biblical worldview through the story of the bible. We've taken time between Genesis 2 and 3 to tighten up our understanding of the order of God's cosmic kingdom: God's Order, the order of the field (the universe), the order of the players (those who dwell within the field of play), and last time as we turned to mankind, we began to major on home order and societal order, and today we turn to order within the church. And as we do that, we are viewing the discussion within the wider context of the bible as a whole. We refreshed our frame of the original order of man in the garden; we briefly surmised the order of man throughout the OT, before turning to the instructions given to us by the apostles. And so far, we have witnessed the continuity of male-leadership from the first chapters of Genesis to the NT. And as we continue the New Covenant Economy of man, we will examine the so-called controversial passages on church order, and lastly we'll touch on the order and economy of man within the future kingdom. Hopefully then, we will have a much better grasp of the universal principles God has delivered to man: proper Christian ordering of activities as players within his field, and under his throne. By the end of today you should appreciate the gravity and urgency of why this subject is of such significance, especially upon the hour the church finds herself. The order of the bride of Christ is no small matter, in the same way the preparation of your bride, or you as the bride, was no small matter.
Correct dynamics in the home and church are vital to build the foundations of relationships on – between each other, and our Lord Jesus. But are we orderly? We are in dismay at the world, we expect it of the world, but is the bride of Christ orderly? Principally there are two sides of the debate within Christianity when it comes to home and church order, with a sliding scale between them. Complementarianism vs Egalitarianism. As we look at the economy of man, we're going to look at the classic NT passages within the full scope of scripture. The original economy of man (the order in Eden); the mosaic economy of man (the order of the patriarchs and Israelites); then we'll concentrate more fully on the New covenant economy of man as described and prescribed by Jesus and the apostles; and lastly, of which I've never heard anyone include in the subject when preaching on the matter: the future kingdom economy of man. We will demonstrate there is a continuity of leadership principles from beginning to end. It must have been from God, because what I saw blew me away and the infantile understanding that I'd gleaned. I literally nearly fell of my chair. In that moment I knew the bible was true. Only a decade and more later when I began a deep dive into Genesis 2 did it confirm that image. You've probably heard it said before that summer is the "happiest" season. But while sunshine and warmer temperatures may be blissful for some, for others, summer can bring about its own set of challenges. In fact, did you know that summer can actually make anxiety symptoms worse? “Anxiety can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations”, Stephen Buckley, Head of Information at mental health UK charity Mind explains. “Symptoms might include feeling a sense of dread, a faster heartbeat, feeling light-headed or dizzy or having panic attacks. While experiencing some or all of these symptoms is common enough, anxiety can be classed as a mental health problem if it starts to impact your day to day life.” Buckley continues: "If your feelings of anxiety are lasting for a long time, very regular or out of proportion to the scenario, you might have an anxiety disorder. There are a number of different kinds, including generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, perennial anxiety or panic disorder.” Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is usually experienced in the dark, gloomy months, but as Web MD explains, 10% of people who have SAD experience reverse seasonal affective disorder in the summer. Specific symptoms include loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, weight loss, and – yes – anxiety. But why is this? Speaking to Web MD, Ian A. Cook, MD, the director of the Depression Research Program at UCLA, says that, for some, depression in summer will be purely biological. For others, there may be external factors at play: Warm weather can contribute to health issues such as dehydration and lack of sleep, both of which can lead to anxiety among certain people. On top of this, many of the symptoms associated with overheating mimic those experienced in an anxiety attack, such as sweating, dizziness, and faintness. The overlap between the two can definitely be confusing, and at times, scary. The long days of the season can also affect your body clock and throw off your circadian rhythms, which can be crucial in looking after your mental health. The sun may have us rising earlier or going to bed later, plus the heat can make it difficult to get the same hours sleep you usually would. Although allergies like hay fever are considered minor health problems, the impact they can have on mental health is significant. In a 2018 study published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, scientists looked into the effect hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and hay fever with eye allergies (allergic rhinoconjunctivitis) on adolescents. Lead study author Dr. Michael Blaiss said: "The emotional burden of hay fever can be huge." He added: "Three of the studies in our review examined how adolescents are emotionally affected by hay fever [...] and hay fever with eye allergies (allergic rhinoconjunctivitis). They found adolescents with hay fever had higher rates of anxiety and depression, and a lower resistance to stress. [They] also exhibited more hostility, impulsivity, and changed their minds often." Stephen Buckley explains that exercise is good for your mind and body and, although the weather is warm, it's still important to try and get some sort of physical movement in. If it’s a particularly hot day, try walking in the morning to beat the heat. Maintaining a balanced diet is also key, Buckley says. “Try to eat foods that contain lots of protein and fibre, get plenty of veg, fruit and nuts, and enough water,” he explains. He suggests avoiding too much caffeine and – although tempting during summertime – avoid too many alcoholic or sugary drinks. When it comes to sleeping, try to do everything you can ahead of going to bed to cool down your room so that the heat doesn't disturb you too much. Buckley adds that, "if you’re having trouble sleeping, try to establish a routine when you do things that you find relaxing before bed." These kind of small adjustments may make all the difference.

Anxiety's a natural part of life - under certain circumstances. And we know that med students and junior docs are more likely than other groups to suffer from anxiety disorders and depression. This week, the Sharp Scratch team talk about their anxieties, and hear from some expert guests on how we can manage anxiety day to day, and how to recognise when we might need a little extra help. This week's expert guests and contributors: Dr Stania Kamara is an ST6 Specialist Registrar in Forensic Psychiatry, and current Medical Director's Clinical Fellow at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges with NHS England and NHS Improvement. She is passionate about trying to improve access to good quality mental health care across the globe and has worked to develop services and build the capacity of the mental health workforce in a number in number of low and middle income countries. In 2015 she was shortlisted for the Royal College of Psychiatrists Core Trainee of the Year award and awarded the Queen's medal for service during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
