Hilary Johnson is a Ph.D. candidate in mechanical engineering at MIT and fellow at J-WAFS. Hilary is working on an integral and underappreciated part of our daily lives – centrifugal pumps. Centrifugal pumps are an affordable and common way many municipal systems distribute clean water, but the pumps are far from efficient and consume the same amount of energy 56 Hoover Dams could produce in a year. As the pressure of climate change pushes for more reliable and efficient systems to deliver clean water, Hilary has designed a new pump that fluctuates with water flow drastically improving the current systems. Hilary's broader research includes building a suite of design tools to improve the energy efficiency of pump systems. Hilary joined the podcast to talk about the pump she designed and how it came about. She addresses what problem is it solving for the user and In what ways will it make a user's job easier. Hilary also addresses the question about if will appeal to users in the U.S. and abroad – if so, will applications be different from one country to another for any reason? Other topics discussed: Why is there newly focused attention on centrifugal pumps and a need for improvement? Growth of the centrifugal pump market Other considerations engineers should be thinking of in regards to the energy efficiency and reliability of centrifugal pumps to distribute clean water? Email podcast host Drew Champlin at dchamplin@cahabamedia.com.

This week Bethany and Bekah talk about how the Instagram algorithm and how to use that knowledge to grow your audience. Then Charli interviews Hilary Johnson, an MIT doctoral student, all about her invention process and research that led to the invention of a new kind of centrifugal pump called a "variable volute" pump. [Interview Starts at 29:24] Watch this episode on YouTube.Hilary Johnson, an MIT doctoral student, who just won the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, has solved a big problem related to hydraulic pump inefficiencies. She has invented an entirely new kind of centrifugal pump (called a “variable volute” pump) that does something engineering experts previously thought was impossible -- it physically adjusts to more efficiently move water based on immediate need, resulting in energy and cost savings. The 5 percent energy improvement over the lifetime of a pump is a huge savings considering the hundreds of billions of kilowatt hours they consume. https://www.linkedin.com/in/hilary-anna-johnson/https://www.hilaryannajohnson.com/email: hilaryj@mit.eduResources and Links:Get the digital editionSign up for Empowering Pumps & Equipment newsletterNominate an Industry Person of the WeekEmpowering Brands Meetup - Tues. “Stop thinking and start doing! Fear and self doubt come when you’re thinking, not when you’re doing.” - Adi ArezziniAdi Arezzini is co-founder and CEO of Teami, a lifestyle brand centered around using all-natural, plant-based ingredients - like premium loose-leaf teas - to help customers live happier, healthier lives. Teami’s product line ranges from wellness blends to tea-infused skincare. From a young age, Adi was taught the benefits of holistic health and plant-based eating by her health-conscious mother. At 19, Adi served as a combat trainer for the Israel Defense Force, and later, after returning home to Florida, qualified as a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) certified personal trainer. After years of life in the army barracks, Adi realized her gut wasn’t functioning properly, due to a lack of access to quality nutrition. Despite trying different diets, supplements and more, nothing seemed to help with her lagging digestive system, inability to go to the bathroom and painful bloating.Soon Adi began experimenting with loose leaf tea blends as a natural remedy. These high quality teas Adi made uncovered the root of her problem: an excess of toxins built up in her digestive tract. After realizing her “secret sauce” blend also solved similar digestion issues with her friends, Adi saw the potential and began looking to different varieties of tea to combat other common issues: fatigue, depleted immune system, stress and insomnia. Researching, creating, blending and sourcing these teas wasn’t just a passion for Adi, it because her purpose and, soon, her expertise. At just 23, Adi created Teami in her mother’s bedroom. She saw Teami as a way to help people becom ehealthier and happier, with teas to solve everyday issues.Today, Adi has since grown the lifestyle tea brand to include tea-infused beauty oils and green tea mask + scrub.
