Taking place within a future apocalyptic wasteland, Denzel Washington plays the titular Eli and he's traversing through this wasteland with an all-important book (hence the title)...along with a super-sharp machete blade, shotgun, killer instincts, and car battery-powered IPod Classic.  Things get hairy once he arrives in the wrong town where the local villain Carnegie (Gary Oldman) wants to take possession of this mysterious book.  And what results is an increasingly violent stand-off between Eli and Carnegie's small army of marauders lead by Redridge played by the late, great Ray Stevenson.  Along the way, Eli takes in a sort-of-protégé Solara played by Mila Kunis.  Directed by Allen and Albert Hughes (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents), this bleak action thriller borrows a LOT from The Mad Max Saga but it has a strong enough cast to keep things interesting....   Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The year is 2004. George W. Bush is president, Britney is married to K-Fed, and the iPod Classic is the ultimate Christmas gift. But anyone about to upload Baby, It's Cold Outside to their MP3 device might think twice after reading an article published by Canada's National Post on December 20th, which argued for the song's immediate ban from Canadian airwaves. Written by Rob McKenzie and Joe Bodolai for their humour column, the piece is widely regarded to be the first to publicly question some of the song's lyrics by stating, “the song in question has a lovely melody but it's an ode to statutory rape. In sum, the man gets the girl drunk amid her protests so he can take advantage of her.” Since this takedown of the song was written with a sarcastic tone, the piece was widely viewed as tongue-in-cheek. But this marked the beginning of countless thinkpieces cross-examining the song's controversial lyrics. So is this 1940s festive favourite really just a thinly disguised celebration of sexual violence? Let's take a closer look… This episode was written by Rory Boyle  This is a Broccoli Production  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There seems to be an ever-growing list of examples that reminds us we are living through an age of nostalgia for past media. Black and white photography, vinyl records and the iPod Classic are all experiencing renewed popularity, but what can we put this down to? In this week's podcast, we discuss future nostalgia. What are the technologies and media we will feel nostalgic about in the future and are they simply a reflection of current limitations and imperfections? We discuss The Commitments, hauntology, 90s website revivalism, artificial intelligence language models, and share some of our predictions for future technology nostalgia. Double Tap Canada is back to save the planet, with a look at upcycling old phones and just what Steven has bought that makes him an eco-warrior… After a few technical issues with the intro music and a group therapy session on what's annoying the team this week, it's on to Steven's retro tech purchases. He's incredibly happy to have picked up an iPod Classic with its 80GB storage, click wheel interface and 30-pin connector. There's no denying it's a blast from the past but there is one problem: it's not accessible. Of course, Steven's solution to this is to also buy a 2012 MacBook Air. Has he gone mad, or is he really an eco-warrior hero? Staying with old tech, it's on to a look at Samsung's Galaxy Upcycling project. Although still in it's beta stage, Samsung announced they will be releasing updates to some of its older smartphones, which will allow them to be used as smart home sensors. Once you've updated your old device, you can either use it as a sound sensor that will notify you when it hears a certain sound - such as a baby crying or dog barking - or an ambient light sensor that can turn off or on lights if it detects certain light levels. Although it's great to see old tech re-purposed like this, we hope Samsung will add more features, such as motion detection via the camera, etc. In Amazon news, some sellers on the platform have been removed due to allegations of trying to solicit positive reviews from people by offering full refunds on products as long as they leave a video or text review. Have you ever experienced this, and can we really trust product reviews? The popular audio-only app Clubhouse has finally come to Android. Well, as long as you live in the U.S., that is. It won't be long until it's available to Android users all over the world, but is it to late? Steven thinks so. In other audio news, Steven and Shaun have been trying out the new Twitter Spaces. Just how does this compare to Clubhouse? Finally, the show wraps up with a chainsaw attack, news on answering calls with just your voice and how Marc uses Air Tags to cheat at hide and seek. It's a tech show … honest.

The Busy Creator Podcast, episode 24 with Word-of-Mouth Marketing Guru Saul Colt 2014.09.22 by Prescott Perez-Fox |  Edit » The Busy Creator Podcast, episode 24 with Word-of-Mouth Marketing Guru Saul Colt Saul Colt (@SaulColt) is one of the world's leaders in word-of-mouth marketing. Over the years, he's bolstered the reputations of his companies and clients by connecting audiences with brands, and by making people think, laugh, and cry. A well-known and well-liked figure across North America, Saul has built a network of creative pros and in turn those relationships have help build his own reputation. In this discussion, we hear how Saul became a connector, how he spent his character-building years as a comic book writer, and how he still struggles (surprisingly) with his own shyness and fear of rejection. Video shows Saul's skywriting stunt, mentioned in the episode. Saul is now Chief Evangelist at Xero, a small business online accounting software company. Catch up with him on his blog,Saul.is.       00:00   00:00         Show Notes & Links “Do you know Saul?” is the question; not a Breaking Badreference. Saul describes himself as “North America's best word-of-mouth marketer” Creative Mornings Tina Roth Eisenberg, aka Swiss Miss “I do more listening than talking.” Debbie Millman's appearance on The Busy Creator Podcast The Crying Indian in those “Do Not Pollute” ads Design Matters, Debbie's long-running podcast Saul grew up in a family business; came up writing comic books Malcolm Gladwell talks about The Connectors in The Tipping Point The Cult of Saul “I want to be known for my accomplishments, not just for being the life of the party.” America's Funniest Home Videos Saul spoke at 38 conferences in one year “People shouldn't try to fail. They should try to be as awesome as possible.” Jen Mussari is also not a fan of failure on purpose. “There's a fine line between boldness and foolishness.” Microsoft's $900 million flop Saul coordinated a skywriting stunt for Xero “If you get those ideas that are worth being fired over, you have to do those ideas.” Saul did an Evel Knievel stunt (mainly just to wear the jumpsuit)
“Everything has been done already. To think you have any original ideas is ridiculous.” Laugh-Think-Cry: Saul's formula to include humour, insight, and emotion in any event or stunt. Be “crazy with a purpose” “Not everything measurable is great and not everything great is measurable.” Snapple's giant popsicle stunt … that failed. Likemind or Meetup to connect with people Prescott has a very personal workflow for podcasts and audiobooks involving the now-retired iPod Classic and several iTunes plugins Every Which Way But Loose Tools Xero LinkedIn and Facebook, for planning lunches and events in different cities Notebooks (and presumably pens/pencils) Techniques Do more listening than talking Fearless execution. Don't be frightened by crazy ideas or blow-back. Let others get credit, but also list your own accomplishments Tell first-hand stories, it has a greater impact Pick an end-goal first and work backwards Pick a unifying icon or reference that can resonate with everyone Vet an idea against “Laugh-Think-Cry” Use your network to meet cool, interesting people Always try to be home on weekends, and don't ask people to hang (because they might say no?) Habits Carry a notebook; allow yourself to be inspired by anything Email your people to get together in different cities Look for odd street art and museums; treat each visit to a city as if it's the last time you'll be there Arrive in town early and ask people if they want to hang out. Umarmung, anybody?
