In this episode, Colin Rule interviews dispute resolution giants Bernard Mayer and Peter Salem about the chapter they co-wrote in the new book Family Dispute Resolution: Process and Practice. Peter and Bernie's chapter is titled "Family Mediation" and it covers the evolution of the practice of family mediation over the past few decades and makes some predictions about its future evolution as well. Our conversation takes a wide sweep over the evolution of the field, and even gets into some of the ways recent political changes might affect it moving forward. This podcast is part of a continuing series interviewing authors from Family Dispute Resolution: Process and Practice. About the book: "Over the last 50 years family justice systems in the United States and elsewhere have evolved from a predominant adversarial approach focused on litigation to the significant integration of more collaborative, settlement-oriented approaches, especially mediation. In Family Dispute Resolution: Process and Practice some of the field's leading practitioners, researchers, teachers, and policymakers provide an overview of the modern family dispute resolution processes designed to help separating and divorcing parents make decisions about the future of their families. Chapters in this book address the growth of divorce mediation and other specialized processes including parenting coordination, arbitration, child-inclusive mediation, and online dispute resolution. They describe how to work with families experiencing issues including domestic violence, high conflict, substance misuse, and the lack of legal representation. Case management initiatives and special issues, including social science research and conflicting standards of practice, are also explored. Family Dispute Resolution provides a wide-ranging look at contemporary family dispute resolution processes and is essential reading for everyone interested in learning more about working with separating and divorcing families, including professionals, and law and graduate students." Co-parenting after divorce is hard enough—but when every decision turns into a battle, it can feel impossible. Are you stuck in a cycle of never-ending arguments over schedules, school decisions, or medical choices? Do your attempts at communication seem to fuel more conflict rather than resolve it? If you're navigating a high-conflict co-parenting dynamic, you may be wondering if there's a way to break free from the chaos. In this episode, we explore an underutilized yet powerful resource: Parenting Coordinators—who they are, what they do, and how they can help you move from constant tension to a more peaceful co-parenting arrangement. We'll dive into the complexities of parenting coordination, exploring how these professionals act as neutral facilitators to help parents make decisions, reduce conflict, and create a more stable environment for their children. What does a Parenting Coordinator actually do? When should you consider working with one? And how can they help enforce or modify a parenting plan without dragging you back into court? If you're feeling exhausted by the emotional toll of co-parenting disputes, this episode will give you insights into how a Parenting Coordinator might be the missing piece in your post-divorce journey. Joining us is Carolyn Kalos, a seasoned family lawyer, mediator, and parenting coordinator with over 25 years of experience in family law. Carolyn has seen firsthand the toll that ongoing conflict takes on parents and children, and she specializes in helping families find practical, sustainable solutions outside of court. From her work as a trial attorney to her extensive mediation and training experience, Carolyn brings a wealth of knowledge on navigating high-conflict parenting situations. I have had the pleasure of interviewing Nurit Zubery in this episode of Conversations To Cut The Conflict. I sat in Nurit's presentation at the Mediation Conference in New Zealand last year and I asked her to come on the podcast as this is not a topic that gets talked about a lot.Women deal with challenges in the family court system, in mediation and men do as well. In this episode we explore the research of Nurit who researched the experience dads have in the mediation and family court system.Listen to this episode to get tips on how as professionals we can improve dad's experiences of the system and mediation, which leads to them engaging more in mediation.I enjoyed the conversation. It is always great to reflect on our practice as professionals to see what we can do better and see situations from a different perspective. You can read the full article that Nurit mentions in the interview here:https://bit.ly/3TKbhqjFor more information about Nurit and her works, visit her website:www.beyondconflict.co.nz

Listen to the newest Be Bold for Jesus Podcast with special guest Pastor Tim Remington senior pastor of The Altar Church in Coeur d'Alene, IDhttps://altarcda.com/ Tim was born in Riverside, California and moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in 1968. After graduation from Coeur d'Alene High School in the late 70's, he moved back to California where he met and married Cindy. In 1984 he became a Pastor in Loma Linda, California. Tim and Cindy also ran a coffee house called the “Supreme Bean Coffee House” for years and served the streets of San Bernardino. It was there they became interested in street ministry and the people that are typically ignored; those who have problems with drugs, alcohol, and perversion. In 1985 they began taking people into their home to help them. That has since grown into their Mentor Home Ministry and Good Samaritan Rehabilitation. The street ministry days, from San Bernardino to LA, taught Tim more about drugs and alcohol than all the education he ever had. Since that time, he received his degree in counseling. To Tim however, the degree is much less meaningful than actually leading an addict to Jesus. Now his life consists of Victim Offender Mediation, Family Mediation, Drug and Alcohol Counseling, Critical Counseling, Idaho Character Council, executive member of the Community Christian Coalition, and Director of Good Samaritan Rehabilitation drug and alcohol residential facilities. In addition, he is the Senior Pastor of The Altar Church in Coeur d'Alene, which he and Cindy began 18+ years ago in the Silver Valley.Tim and Cindy have been blessed with four children, and over three hundred people have lived as a part of their family in their home.“My love is my family and my Lord.”“My passion is to worship.”“ My desire is to show the joy of the Lord to others in all that I do.”“Changing our community one soul at a time.”

Are you challenged by conflict? Do you have what it takes to be a successful mediator? If you feel like you are constantly navigating a maze of disagreements, misunderstandings, and hard feelings, know that you are not alone. Conflict is a significant part of human interaction, and it's particularly present in our professional lives. After all, we spend more than a third of our lives in the workplace, a space that brings together different personalities, perspectives, and values. When conflicts arise, as they inevitably do, they can be buried, mishandled or left unresolved, marring our experience and performance. In this episode, we delve into an in-depth exploration of the nature of conflict and its role in both our professional and personal lives. We attempt to unpack the complexities and dimensions of conflict, looking at its root causes, its evolution, and its potential to catalyze change and growth. Rather than viewing conflict as an undesirable aspect of our lives that needs to be eradicated, we aim to understand it as an integral part of human relationships that, when handled properly, can lead to innovation, empathy, and collaboration. With Kimberly's expert guidance, this episode will equip you with a fresh perspective and effective tools to transform how you perceive and handle conflict in your personal and professional life.THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOWWhat is involved in mediation? My guest on today's episode is Laurie Israel. Laurie Israel is the author of The Generous Prenup. She is an attorney, consultant, and mediator, concentrating her practice on both prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. Many of my clients have had questions about how to handle finances when remarrying on partnering again after divorce, so I was excited to bring her on the podcast to talk about prenups and how they could be useful. And for those just considering a divorce, she explained how marital mediation or arbitration may be more effective than divorce court. Our conversation revealed that what is commonly assumed about prenups and what is talked about in the media and celebrity divorces isn't the truth at all. Laurie pulled back the curtain on prenups and laws around money, contribution and shared her views about generosity and its role in relationships. Enjoy the episode!“What else is marriage, but being considerate to each other?...that's the key to it, really caring about another person.”“A lot of people are encouraged by the media, and what they're reading to make money more important, and protecting your money more important than your marriage…that's the problem.”“There's a lot of pushback on my views by younger people like millennials, and they say…why shouldn't we have a plan for our marriage? You know, why should we take the risk? But the problem is that these people have not experienced what a long term marriage is. And they also don't understand what the laws about marriage and divorce and estates are.”If you want to start making serious progress in your dating journey TODAY, sign up for a coaching consultation call.Click here to ScheduleGet my FREE PDF Download: 50 Green Flags of a Healthy RelationshipFeatured on the Show: Laurie Israel Laurie Israel is an attorney, consultant, and mediator, concentrating her practice on both prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. This week on the Divorce & Beyond podcast, Susan Guthrie, Esq., is joined by Certified Divorce and Mediation Coach, Kelly Myers. Together they discuss how you can start your divorce on the right foot and avoid a divorce hangover! Kelly Myers' goal is for individuals to not have any regrets after the divorce is over. She refers to it as the divorce hangover – the if only's, wouldas, couldas, and shouldas of divorce. In this episode, Kelly shares some of the things she wished she had known or done differently during her divorce. One of the lessons Kelly learned and shares today: You may not get everything you want from your divorce, but with the right tools, mindset, and professionals, you will know exactly why you made every decision you made, you'll understand the pros and cons of each choice, and you can move forward with confidence in your vision. Topics and Golden Nuggets include: Why it is important to look at your divorce as the opportunity to build the foundation for your future. You must become your own advocate. You can't rely on other professionals to do that because they are not an expert in your life. You are. Create a vision of what you want your post-divorce life to be Once you have your vision, use it as a tool for creating your support team and convey not only what you need, but why you believe you need it “How can you use the law as a tool to get what you and your family need, including the ability to move forward and thrive? That's the goal here.” The power of organizing your thoughts and fears in a divorce notebook If divorce is in your future, listen to this episode to gain clarity and build a strong foundation for your beyond! Host Jodie Sweetin is joined by Amy McCarthy and divorce mediator Judith Weigle, who discuss the importance of consistency in co-parenting as well as the need for security while co-parenting. In this episode we will discuss the importance of dealing with your own pain, establishing a consistent message, the role of stepparents and other elements that come into play in co-parenting situations. Oftentimes stress is a trigger for substance use and these are all factors that need to be managed in co-parenting situations. IN THIS EPISODE: [3:41] Co-Parenting and positive communication [5:36] How to be able to present kids with tools and how to begin the conversation of divorce with their kids [7:54] Talking with a therapist helps parents have their own place to process emotions [10:08] Consistency and communication in co-parenting [18:02] How to talk to kids about dating or the role of a stepparents KEY TAKEAWAYS: Statistically children of divorced parents are 3 times more likely to suffer from drug and alcohol abuse than children of non divorced parents Consistency is a key component here. Humans are creatures of habit. Having routines and expectations set up are critically important for developing minds and children. It's not really an argument up for debate. There's ways to be honest with your children without having to reveal all of the information or all of the details. Divorce doesn't have to be a recipe for disaster. It can be an opportunity for all people involved to show up, to have honest conversations, and to continue to support their children. ***DISCLAIMER***The views, information, or opinions expressed during the Awkward Conversation series are solely those of the individuals, speakers, commentators, experts, and or hosts involved and do not necessarily reflect nor represent those of the production, associates or broadcaster, or any of its employees. What is adult family mediation? Join us on this episode where we welcome guest Halee Burg, an Affiliate Mediator with Elder Decisions®, a division of Agreement Resources, LLC. Sometimes families get stuck. We can't agree and we don't know how to move forward. Adult family or elder mediation is an effective method of making difficult family decisions. Mediators are highly skilled, neutral, conflict resolution experts who do not provide advice or "take sides" but, instead, facilitate purposeful and directed conversations in which family members are encouraged to express their interests and concerns. Three key takeaways from this episode: First, mediation is one of the least adversarial methods to resolve disputes. It is a method of facilitated negotiation. There are other options, including arbitration and litigation, that leave the ultimate decision up to a third party. Second, the process may not be a quick one. It is a future-orientated, problem-solving process. While this method is designed to be short-term, it doesn't necessarily mean a resolution will come quickly. Third, mediation is not the same as therapy, but it can feel therapeutic. The goal of mediation is to come to a resolution with solutions and actionable plans for moving forward but the process itself often feels helpful and productive. Agreement Resources, LLC - Adult Family and Elder Mediation About Halee Burg: A former practicing attorney who now focuses solely on mediation, to give back and help ensure broader access to mediation, Halee participates in community and court mediations through a number of greater Boston community mediation programs. As an active member of the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation, the Academy of Professional Family Mediators, the National Association of Divorce Professionals, and the New England Association for Conflict Resolution, Halee continually expands her knowledge of the field, regularly participates in dialogues with colleagues about best practices and approaches, and develops relationships with professionals in related fields whose expertise helps support clients as they work to make informed decisions. A graduate of the University of Rochester (BA, Psychology, summa cum laude) and the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley (J.D), Halee discovered she also enjoyed being on the other side of instruction, and regularly teaches adult education classes regarding divorce in Massachusetts. When not helping people become unstuck, Halee keeps busy pursuing her other passions – photographing beautiful landscapes, getting lost in a good novel, traveling, cooking, golfing, or spending special time with friends and family.
