In her first year as a bikepack racer Jen Kelly has already racked up an impressive resume. She entered into 3 bikepacking races this summer and won them all! She's also a professional poker player who picked up cycling 4 years ago when she moved into a condo next to a rails to trails. She quickly fell in love with it and just wanted to ride further and further. Last year she put her career, as a professional poker player, on hold to focus on riding her bike. Her first bikepacking race was the inaugural Great American Wheel Race, a 3,600 mixed surface race across America which she placed 4th overall and 1st Female. Just 6 weeks later she entered the 900 mile Big Sky Spactacularie in Montana where she took 1st overall. Then only 5 days after finishing Big Sky she entered the 1,750 mile Montana Bike Odyssey and took the overall win again! Needless to say her gamble to focus on bikepacking is paying off! We had a great chat and it was great to talk to someone who is new to the sport and already having so much success. Exclusive to Forgotten Australia listeners, this episode comprises the first 20 pages of The Murder Squad, my new book about homicide investigation in Sydney and NSW during the worst years of the Great Depression. We start with Detective-Sergeant Tom McRae in Albury in September 1934 as he investigates the Pyjama Girl, before flashing back to the triple tragedies he endured in his early life and as he started his rise through the ranks.Check out The Murder Squad's awesome cover:https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-murder-squad-michael-adams/book/9781922863836.htmlHere's what some very nice folks have been saying about The Murder Squad:‘The Murder Squad is a cracking decade-long history of crazed killers and cunning cops – a triumph of true crime storytelling backed by exhaustive research.' – Stephen Gibbs, Daily Mail‘Michael Adams has that rare ability to drop the reader right in the heart of the action. He gives such precise and evocative detail that the reader can almost see, hear and smell each crime scene. Murder Squad is a riveting read, bringing Australia's Great Depression era to life through a series of cracking true crime stories starring the ingenious Sydney detective Tom McRae.' – Jen Kelly, Herald Sun, In Black & White column and podcast‘Michael Adams takes you on a tense journey into Sydney's historical badlands. Compelling, rich and meticulous: this is Australian true crime at its very best.' – Candice Fox, author of Fire With Fire, The Chase and Crimson Lake‘Michael Adams is a master true crime storyteller. His mastery is firstly, in digging out intriguing historical crimes – many of which have long been forgotten – and secondly, in recounting them in the most compelling way. The Human Glove Mystery, The Pyjama Girl and The Park Demon all get the Michael Adams treatment, but so too the stories that didn't attract the sensational headlines, but are no less intriguing. And all of it against a backdrop of historic Australia and the men of the Murder Squad who hunted out the killers and tried to bring them to justice. So thoroughly researched, this is the ultimate reference for true crime in Australia during the depression years.' – Mercedes Maguire, The Daily Telegraph Hosted on Acast. This is nacho typical Round Table episode—First, some serious gratitude, then some serious fun! Having the time and money to live their best lives, Mark asks the guys to dig deep to get to a more personal and intimate level to find out what they are most grateful for, that this business provides them.Joining Mark are: Mike ZainoScott BossmanTate LitchfieldScott ToddHere is a little sneak peek into their answers... Mike—To me it's time freedom. Everybody knows I still work the fire department, I'm blessed with a great schedule there, but as far as every other day of the week it's just basically do whatever I want, whenever I want. And not just the time freedom, but to be free of debt. I don't have that immense pressure of debt on me anymore. I don't feel the burden and that weight. Debt can be crushing and if anybody out there is suffering from any type of debt you know what I'm talking about, it affects you at all levels of your life. Scott Bossman—I'm just not rushed anymore. Like when you're working 8:00-5:00 and you've got to get kids to school in the morning and you've got to get them home in the afternoon and you've got to have dinner ready. It has improved my family relationships. This summer was my first summer home not working a job in 24 years and I was able to go golfing on a Monday with my son and go fishing on a Thursday with my other son and to be able to do these things with my boys that I was never able to do before.Tate—The money that this business creates, I'm grateful for that. But after all is said and done, it's allowed me to really spend time on things that I want to and that includes my health. I'm able to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle which is important because your health is wealth. I'm also really grateful for the time with my young family. It allows me to be a present dad. I don't miss the milestones. I get to go to dance practices and these kinds of activities that my daughter finds interesting and I love it. I love being the only dad who goes to scissors classes.Scott Todd—I'm thankful that this is a business that has allowed myself and others to enjoy the life that they want on their own timeframe, being able to do what you want, that's the coolest thing to me about this business. It allows you to give back to the community, to give back to mankind. It's not ‘all about me',  it's about living and being a better person because you have the time freedom to do it. And you have the economic freedom to help other people. When you can do that, man, life all of a sudden gets a lot more better. What is Mark grateful for? “I'm so grateful for so many things and everything you guys were talking about I'm super, super grateful for. When I was younger, I was Tate and then as I was going through my career I felt like what Scott felt like, being able to get out of my job in 18 months. Then to be able to spend time with my loved ones like, you know, just that morning routine like what Zaino was saying and Bossman being able to have those special moments throughout the week with my family. I've experienced all of those things. So today, I think what I'm most grateful for is The Land Geek community and being able to live vicariously through other people's success. On Facebook yesterday with the Dude Buddy and the Zen Master, out of nowhere Nick Ringling is like, 'Yeah, you know, I'm 8 months out of Flight School"...I think he made $187,000. And Paul Brewers like, "Yeah, I paid for Flight School tuition in my first deal." Josh Deel same thing. I mean this is out of the blue. Like we're not asking them to go on and do this. And I think through me hearing these stories of success... like a Tyler and Jen Kelly, I feel like now I can really die in peace, at least professionally, that I've made enough of an impact to do that. I think having that ability to make an impact in other people's lives I'm most grateful for.”Mark also shares a story about a recent heartwarming rescue mission that Scott Todd was on. Then the guys get on topic of Thanksgiving and their family traditions which, for obvious reasons, leads to the topic of food…. Cheesecake Factory may or may not have been mentioned. Ok, it was.  Then, have you ever been in a nacho emergency but didn't know where to go? During the most recent Bootcamp, a question came up that the team wanted to address in this week's Round Table discussion and that was, is it bad etiquette to ask another investor which county they work in?Joining Mark this week to Round Table that question are:Scott BossmanMimi SchmidtMike ZainoScott ToddBut first, just coming from the latest Bootcamp in Scottsdale, Team Land Geek shares their biggest takeaways.“To echo on what Mike said, what I love is hearing from people about how different their life is today compared to a year ago. Tyler and Jen Kelly had done one deal last year and now they've done 80. I mean, that's insane and there are a lot of stories like that. Now some journeys take longer than others but really, I just love hearing those comparison stories from people of where they were then and now. I think that really motivates people to take action and ask themselves, okay, where can I be a year from now if I just start this journey.” -Scott BossmanSo, is it bad etiquette to ask another investor what county they work in?Join Team Land Geek as they round table that question and share their views and thoughts on the subject. The one opinion that was reiterated by all was, yes, it is bad etiquette… and for a number of reasons. One reason being that it's a huge disadvantage for the person asking the question because part of learning and growing in this business is digging in and going through the pain of learning the processes yourself, and that includes the county research.Mike points out the better, “should have asked” question and that is, how do I learn to educate myself on good areas?I see a lot of people waste a lot of money on mailings because they are just going to a county with something someone told them but they haven't actually done the research right. -MimiThen Mark makes the counter argument on abundance mentality—If we think it is bad etiquette to disclose our counties… which is just one google search away anyways, does that mean that we really don't have abundance mentality?Find out the teams response along with all the reasons why it really is just bad etiquette to ask another investor which county they work in.And then, the chirp... how do you handle that darn chirp!?Listen in for details in this, “Hey, can I have your fish?" episode of The Land Geek Round Table!Be you and find properties or counties that you like to work in so that you can create the company that's unique to you and you can hold that as your strategic advantage too or your competitive advantage over me. -Scott Todd*Special thanks to Ashley for such a great question!TIP OF THE WEEKMimi: I learned that Trello integrates with PipeDrive; you can learn more by clicking HERE. Also, check out DeedClaim.com for information on corrective deeds.Isn't it time to create passive income so you can work where you want, when you want and with whomever you want?

Welcome to the 100th episode of Giving Back Insights!  Insights is our solo show to celebrate how our guests and their charities serve others, explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and connect. Today we're talking about Miracle Messages in San Francisco –  amazing work, amazing people!  Enjoy today’s episode and keep your comments and feedback coming.ent. Enjoy! Key Takeaways: To start off, thank you for being with me on Insights.  We always have great guests on our Monday shows, people who are doing amazing things for people in their communities.  The Giving Back Insights episodes are a way to share what I’m learning along the way in the hope of continuing the conversation about how you and I can make a difference in people’s lives.  Sometimes the Insights shows veer toward my own journey of creating a life of purpose and meaning, and I appreciate you hanging with me and the terrific comments I’ve received. Much mahalo to everyone. The impact of an emergency or terrible circumstances is always felt most deeply when it’s close to home.  When it’s personal, it’s our own story. It’s also when we’re most likely to jump in and get busy ourselves, whether it’s donating, volunteering, or participating in some way that will help solve the problem. On Thursday I joined Kevin Adler and some members of the Miracle Messages crew on a Street Walk through San Francisco’s Tenderloin District.  It’s a weekly event to hand out food, engage in conversations, and help people reconnect with their loved ones. That happy fella on today’s cover is Brian, and his t shirt is the slogan of Miracle Messages: Everyone is someone’s somebody. #StreetWalks @MiracleMessages The Tenderloin is a rough area; there are lots of homeless people, lots of drug use, and lots of mental health issues.  It is also, as Kevin reminded us, one of MANY neighborhoods across the US struggling with homelessness. Over 536,000 people in America went to sleep that night without a shelter.  The challenge is to move beyond the number and the stereotypes and to remember that each of our unsheltered neighbors is a mother, father, son, daughter, niece, nephew, uncle and aunt.  That’s what makes an issue, a problem, a cause --- important to us personally and keeps us engaged. All of us came to Street Walk on Thursday to remember that “they” are us.  Each of us came in from different backgrounds and for different reasons to serve where those in need are at.  Some of us were challenged by the harsh reality of life on the streets, some us challenged in our beliefs. All of us came with the conviction that everyone is someone’s somebody. Brian and Kevin did a fine job keeping us all safe, helped as much by people on the street who know them and Miracle Messages’ mission as their own presence and direction.  We passed out food, engaged in conversations, played some music, and recorded videos for a couple of people who want to reconnect with their loved ones. Imagine being apart from family for 10, 20, even 30 years.  Miracle Messages has fostered 150+ reconnections and are going strong with over 80% positive reunions. Listening to each of the night’s crew talk about their experience at our debrief after our walk, I felt a deep gratitude for what I have in my life.  That I have an abundance and can share SOMETHING with someone who needs a hand up is a blessing. I also felt a profound sense of appreciation for each person who came out that night to support Miracle Messages.  Each of them came to serve and make a difference in someone’s somebody. I wanted to connect them to the impact they have so I shared a short text between my brother Tom and me that we exchanged that very night.  A simple “Hello” and setting up a breakfast get together. So normal, so absolutely mundane, right? I hadn’t seen Tom in over 20 years until Miracle Messages reconnected us.  I missed him terribly, and I cherish every moment we’re together. Brett, Nim, Brian, Katie Beverly, Emme, Nancy, Fernanda, Jen Kelly, Kevin and all the staff, volunteers and supporters of Miracle Messages: Thank you for giving me my brother back.  He’s my somebody. Special thanks to Salesforce for providing a wonderful venue for Miracle Messages’ first annual Un-gala!  Special shout out to Kevin Adler for kicking off the donations by raising his paddle to fully support reuniting a family.  Major kudos to Union Square for their new partnership with Miracle Messages to reunite our unsheltered neighbors with their loved ones.  HUGE thanks and love to Nancy for putting me and my bro back together. To Kevin, Jessica and all the staff, volunteers, Detectives, Ambassadors and supporters of Miracle Messages, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Remember: Always err on the side of love & kindness.
