Ep. 50 – NYPD Cold Case Det. Jason Palamara (Ret.) was with the department for 20 years and recently retired in 2020. Prior, he served in the U.S. Navy for three years. I've long wanted to interview a homicide or cold case detective about the challenges of their work and because of what I see as the public's misperceptions of their commitment. We start with the inauspicious beginning to his law enforcement career. He writes on his LinkedIn page, “I became a cop on July 2, 2001. Two months later, I would respond to Ground Zero.” We discuss his memories of that day and of his time deployed as a recruit. I also lived in New York during 9/11, so we discuss that shared experience. I once again get to thank an NYPD officer as I did in Ep. 45 with Det. Knocko Nolan for his service during that difficult time.In 2006, Jason joined the Detective Bureau with the 84th Precinct Detective Squad in downtown Brooklyn and then in 2015, was assigned to the Cold Case Homicide Squad. As stated, I've long wanted to show how dedicated homicide and cold case detectives are they are to solving their cases. You will hear in our conversation how deeply personal these cases were to Jason, and the impact the investigations had on him, both the rewards and the challenges.During his time with Cold Case, Jason became a peer support member with the NYPD Health and Wellness section. Since retiring, he has remained committed to health and wellness for veterans and law enforcement. He works as a crisis counselor, keynote speaker and life coach. He has an upcoming book with coauthor Barbara Rubel called “Living Blue: Helping Law Enforcement Officers and Their Families Survive and Thrive from Recruitment to Retirement.” We take the time to talk about the emotional challenges of retirement for LEOs, a subject I don't often hear discussed. I close with my favorite line from his website:“I find there to be no greater mission than of giving your fellow human being the hope that tomorrow is worthwhile destination.”Here is the link to his website:https://jasonpalamara.org/You can also find him on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram.Thank you, Jason. A college secret is said to be the motive behind the murder of an Ohio Mom. Brenda Powell was bludgeoned with a frying pan and then stabbed more than 30 times.   Daughter Sydney Powell, 19 at the time, was charged with murder.  Prosecutors claimed Sydney Powell did not tell her parents that she was suspended from Mount Union University months earlier for poor academics.  Brenda Powell was on the phone with college officials when her daughter struck. Defense experts argued that Sydney Powell suffered a psychotic break when she killed her mother. Three experts found she was schizophrenic and could not discern right from wrong.  Experts for the prosecution asserted Powell had mental health issues, but was not insane when she committed the crime.       Joining Nancy Grace Today: Brian Stano -   Summit County Assistant Prosecutor and lead prosecutor on the Sydney/Brenda Powell homicide case   Dr. Carla Manly - Clinical Psychologist, Author “Date Smart: Transform Your Relationships & Love Fearlessly”, drcarlamanly.com  Lt. Lauren Smith-Fields was found unresponsive inside her Plymouth Street apartment on Dec. 12 and later died. The medical examiner has not released the cause of death, and investigators are not commenting. Family says Smith-Fields met an "older white man" on Bumble and it was he who alerted police to her death. Lakeem, her brother, says he asked authorities about the man but was told he was a nice guy with no need to be investigated. Smith-Fields father says the only contact they've had with police is with a "very insensitive, condescending and arrogant detective." The City of Bridgeport issued a statement about the investigation saying, "The Bridgeport Police Department takes these concerns very seriously. The Command Staff of the Detective Bureau is reviewing the handling of this case to ensure that best practices were and are being followed. It is imperative to note that the death of Lauren Smith-Fields remains an ongoing investigation. Our department extends its deepest condolences to the family of Lauren." Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner Certified Enneagram Teacher Jane began her lifelong love of horses as a competitive rider. When she left the world of traditional horsemanship behind, she had no idea that horses would ever become an integral part of her life again. It was not until she began to study the principles and practices of natural horsemanship that she came to understand what horses had to teach us about how we come across to others, about being in the moment and how to bring out the best in ourselves. Read More about Jane I've worked in this way with horses for the past 10 years. Because horses engage all of our senses and ask us to be as present as they are, they can help people discover new ways of seeing themselves in relation to others. This work is both serious and fun, energizing and relaxing, easy to understand and deeply meaningful. By teaching us to stay present in the face of change, horses can help us develop our capacity to navigate transitions from one phase of life to another faster than any other mode of experiential learning or treatment I know. They invite the deepest, most honorable part of ourselves to come forward and meet life on life's terms. Chapter 28 begins with Ray and team feeling pumped.  They are confident the big break is about to happen. Many Cones is a podcast novel based on true crime. The murders inspiring this crime fiction took place 30 miles from Chicago in Northwest Indiana, and captivated the area from the initial brutal crime scene all the way through and beyond discovery of a shockingly bizarre motive. By 8:00 A.M., the Detective Bureau was a hive of activity. The entire special team had arrived, all with the same idea. Each tiny desk was littered with white styrofoam cups, brimming with steaming black liquids and multicolored rectangular boxes of donuts. The men and women were pumped. Ray’s belief that a break would come from the publicity was infectious. He purposely allowed them to mingle, without purpose, until the meeting. They were hyping each other. No matter what happened, today would be a good work day. Grandisha remained seated in his office. He didn’t mix. The dark wooden desk was piled with information from the two massacres. His balding head barely hovered over the stacks. The stoop didn’t help. He looked busy, but was doing nothing. Waiting for time to pass until the meeting started. The plan had been reviewed in his mind, over and over again. They would start from the beginning. Go over every printed word a fifth or sixth time with an eye toward young men and teens, and brace themselves for the break. The break had to come. At approximately 8:30, Ray sauntered into the bureau, centered himself amongst Long Johns, Danishes, and Bismarks. The meeting was easy. Everyone wanted to listen, wanted to work. The constantly ringing phones didn’t disrupt. Calls were answered without an interruption of attention. Two of the men transferred the files from Ray’s desk to Ray’s side. He passed them out to the group with specific instructions. Each team had a separate road to travel, but all roads would meet at the same place. Not a lot of questions were asked. Every person was required to man the phones, in addition to everything else. The phones had been ringing since 7:30. Kooks, revenge seekers, little old ladies with too much time on their hands, and do gooders trying to help. Some with the right mix of suspects, setting, and description. Each member of the team was experienced enough to separate the wheat from the chaff. Grandisha wanted the wheat brought to him immediately. Even if it was the end of the day. The meeting lasted a half hour. The call came at 9:15. A female detective sitting one desk over from Margie was the lucky one. The caller was a person with a Spanish accent. Male. Wouldn’t leave a name. Claimed to be a student at the high school. Could have been. Sounded young. But could have been older too. Knew a student by the name of Ricardo Morales. Had heard him say “Maricon” during the last couple of years, always said it in an angry way. His best friend was Richard Sparne. A white kid. They did everything together. The last couple of months they had been acting like Al Capone and John Gotti. End of conversation. Call traced to a public pay phone. The female detective hung up the phone, stood and yelled, “I got one,” like a greedy stockbroker. She had been writing on a notepad during the conversation and waved the paper sheet in the air. The bureau quieted and watched her triumphant march to Grandisha’s office.

Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—YOU can be TOUGHER!” podcast is honored to feature Rick Tirelli, retired NYPD homicide detective, Film Producer at Kauffman Films, and entertainment industry’s technical advisor for crime documentaries, films and TV shows—most notably for the legendary “NYPD Blue” television series. Rick Tirelli is best known for being the heart and soul behind the legendary series “NYPD Blue”—one of the most successful law enforcement TV series! Rick joined the NYPD on January 4, 1984 and worked in the 114 precinct’s (in Queens) anti-crime. In 1988 he was assigned to the Detective Bureau with the 105 Detective Squad. Rick is considered one of the greatest interrogators in the history of the NYPD and was nicknamed “Master of the Box”. He worked his way up to the Manhattan South Homicide Squad and the 26 years he served as a homicide detective, saw over 700 cases cross his desk and is proud to say “...solved 575 of them.” In 1996 Rick was elected the Queens Trustee for the union representing the Greatest Detectives in the world—The DEA (Detectives Endowment Association). Shortly thereafter he was elevated to DEA Secretary, where he served for 6 years, negotiating contracts, grievances, hearings, health benefits, annuities and all other union related matters. Remarkably, while investigating homicides, Rick also closely worked with the producers of the legendary series “NYPD Blue”, advising intimately with the casting, writing, development, post-production and locations—with his access to police departments throughout the country proving to be his strongest asset. He has also worked behind the scenes on “Big Apple” and the feature films “Pride & Glory” (advising Jon Voight, Ed Norton, and Colin Farrell) and “Exposed” (coaching Keanu Reeves in specific police lingo). Rick was Executive Producer of “Watching the Detectives” on A&E, and “The Perfect Murder” on ID. Rick first forged his friendship with Titus Welliver on “NYPD Blue” and later, on “Big Apple.” Rick wore many hats during “The Perfect Murder,” “Watching the Detectives,” “I Married a Mobster,” and while producing “Godfather and Sons” working with several actors to teach accurate terminology and sometimes even giving them a tour of the precinct. He also played the instrumental role of conducting interviews for the shows. “One of the things we always try to do is show that the cops are out there to do the right thing,” Tirelli says of projects like Ace, “...and that means, stories showing how the police and public work in tandem to solve crimes.” Rick retired from the NYPD on March 1, 2015 as a 1st Grade Detective to further his television producing partnership with Kevin Kaufman from Kaufman Films. “Kevin and I do everything together, pretty much from the beginning to the end,” Rick says. “We basically put our minds together … not only for the police stuff but for all of it.” Join Dustin and Rick for a deep dive into his 31-year career with the NYPD and learn some of the “behind the scenes” work that goes into making the greatest cop shows and films ever produced!
