Episode 191 of The Adventure Podcast was recorded live at Kendal Mountain Festival 2024 and features ultra-marathon runner and alpinist, Hillary Gerardi. Hillary recently broke the women's Mont Blanc fastest known time, setting a new record of seven hours, 25 minutes and 28 seconds. In the episode, Matt talks to Hillary about her skyrunning journey, what it took to break the FKT, and the importance of savouring that experience rather than immediately moving onto the next big thing. Hillary also discusses how to safely build individual pillars for alpinism and skyrunning before attempting to bridge the two. They talk about a lesser known project Hillary embarked on this year, imperfect activism, and how she approaches sustainable living as a competitive athlete. It's a broad-ranging, energetic, and inspiring conversation which will leave you wanting to dust off your running shoes and hit the hills. This is a live recording of a conversation at The Barrel House, Kendal as part of Kendal Mountain Festival on Saturday 23rd November 2024. Finlay Wild talks to The Selkies (Suzy Connor, Lizzie Goodfellow, Heloise Le Clanche and Cat Riaz) about their journey to the finish line of the 2024 Scottish Islands Peaks Race (SIPR), as the first all-female team to compete in 19 years. The SIPR is a gruelling sailing and running race involving sailing between - and running up peaks - on Mull, Jura and Arran in a non stop race from Oban to Troon, held in May each year. The fifth member of the team was sailor Kirsteen Woods. The team first had to find each other and a boat to even get to the start line. Muir Anderson lent his boat Dipper, and after a significant amount of work to make her race ready, the team were ready to compete. Navigating what is traditionally a male dominated race, they finished in a little under 68 hours in a close run race with the chasing boat. It was a pleasure to meet the team and hear their recollections of the journey - complete with anecdotes about purgatorial rowing, 7am champagne, and terrible singing! And if anyone has a spare yacht for 2025... Stuart talks to festival patron and bestselling writer Robert Macfarlane about his "mountain DNA" and unusual walking snack. Broadcaster and writer Louise Minchin loves a mountain too. Having put aside the extreme working practice of rising at 3am for Breakfast TV she now loves a triathlon, a free-dive at night under ice or the extreme experience that is learning to cook a soufflé from an online video for Celebrity Masterchef. Space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock - who is such a star there is even a Barbie doll in her image - on being inspired by the night sky, be that incredible telescope images or The Clangers as she was as a child. And for a counterpoint approach we have a relative newcomer to the country, the comedian Chris Cantrill who describes himself as a "rural imposter" and hosts a podcast about adapting to the northern wilds by competitive leek growing and donning a cape. Plus music from Lake District singer songwriter Olivia Fern and Cumbrian-born indie artist Melanie Baker, who loves mountains so much she once filmed a music video at the top of one. If you delve into the history of almost any endurance mountain running challenge in the UK you will likely see the name John Fleetwood. Usually flying under the radar solo and unsupported, his website www.longdistancechallenges.blogspot.com reveals a plethora of epic mountain adventures in the wild trackless bounds of Scotland, England and Wales. John first became 'hooked' on endurance runs in the late 90s following his 'first proper run' - the 100km Bob Graham Round. Long before the current boom in ultra running and 'FKTs' he was having intense experiences as he sought to bring dream lines on a map into reality by following them on the ground. More interested in 'first known completions' than speed itself, he has made huge aesthetic loops in wild places. A winter Broxap Round in Glen Shiel over 120km and 61hrs; the Glen Lyon Watershed, a 121km 47hr loop of rough grass, bog and heather; or the Strathfarrar Watershed, 99km over 50hrs in deep snow. We talk in more detail about John's Scottish Haute Route walk, his Lakes 40 Peaks at 40yrs challenge, and his mind bending Winter Rigby Round - a 54hr odyssey around the dark December Cairngorms in 2010. John is also an author of two Cicerone guides to Scrambles in the Lake District. His book Beyond the View is his 'pilgrimage through nature', a hardback photography book interlaced with his personal story and deep connections to these wild places. Seeing 'beyond the view' is about connecting with our surroundings in a deeper way. He has also worked with Big Issue vendors in a project which gave them new access to outdoor experiences. He hopes to set up a charity further expanding this work which aims to heal the disconnect many people (and arguably society as a whole) feels for nature. John is speaking at Kendal Mountain Festival next week (Sunday 24th November 2024)

Send us a textWow, what a fantastic conversation with the fabulous Emily Williams - and our first to be released on YouTube (you can watch it here!)Emily is the Director and Co-founder of Every Body Outdoors and loves the outdoors - at the moment mostly cycling and wild swimming, but also paddleboarding, canoeing, camping and exploring and anything else that looks like fun. In her day job she works as a self-employed knitwear designer and technical editor (specialising in plus size grading of hand-knit patterns) and is a campaigner advocating for better active travel infrastructure in the highlands. Emily shared with us how she has always loved outdoor activities and adventures and how she became an activist to lobby for size-inclusive clothing. She has been putting herself out there, representing how those in plus-size bodies can have the adventures that we usually only see straight-sized and thin folks go on. Every Body Outdoors is building a community exclusively for people in larger bodies who want to explore outdoor activities. They review clothes and gear, and they run regional walks. We also talked about the brilliant short film 'Capsized' that showed Emily and her friend Lisa on a canoe adventure in the Scottish Lochs. We chatted about their journey, how getting the right gear was so much more difficult and labour intensive for Emily than Lisa, and how the film is meant to show people that there is a place for every body outdoors. The Outdoors Fix is a podcast to inspire you to make the outdoors a bigger part of your life. It's hosted by Liv Bolton. In this episode, Liv Bolton goes for a walk on Harborne Walkway in Birmingham with hiker, runner, model and founder of We Go Outside Too Marlon Patrice. We Go Outside Too is a group which aims to make the countryside more accessible for the black community and to increase representation in the outdoors. It was set up in 2020 after the tragic death of his son through knife crime, when Marlon realised how much nature was helping him and that he wanted to engage his community with it too. We Go Outside Too is based in Birmingham and they offer days out in the countryside, walks, tree planting and outdoor poetry workshops. Transport and kit are often provided and they are supported by brands and organisations, including Merrell. They've organised more than 30 walks so far and engaged more than 1,000 people with their events. The social enterprise won a Head Outside Award in 2023 at Kendal Mountain Festival - awards which celebrate people or organisations helping people with mental health challenges to get outdoors. Marlon lives in Birmingham and he took Liv for a walk on Harborne Walkway to record their podcast episode. Formerly a railway line, it's now a green, quiet oasis in a bustling, noisy city. Liv sought to find out why Marlon wanted to engage his community with the outdoors, and what's been the impact of We Go Outside Too so far? If you enjoy this episode, it would fantastic if you could subscribe. And do tell your family and friends about it - thank you! Episode 164 of The Adventure Podcast is a special live episode recorded at Kendal Mountain Festival 2023. This is a definite deviation from our standard episode format, and instead of focussing on a single individual, this is the recording of a live panel discussion in front of a crowd. Matt co-hosted this discussion alongside Matt Barr, who runs the Looking Sideways podcast, and is joined by guests Adam Raja, Soraya Abdel-Hadi and Lauren MacCallum. The theme of this roundtable was The Power of Storytelling - New Perspectives, and covers vulnerability in storytelling, how to take climate storytelling out of the echo chamber, and is long-form content dying? This podcast gets a bit full on, and is emotional, deep and perhaps a little controversial. In a good way. There's some regular fruity language as well, so consider that a warning...Photo credit: Joe KershawSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Hosted on Acast. Farmers who continually have bovine TB outbreaks on their farms should ‘find another business'. That was what Labour Welsh Senedd member Joyce Watson suggested on the floor of the Senedd earlier this week. Ms Watson was responding to a statement from the Welsh Rural Affairs Minister Lesley Griffiths about bovine TB. The Welsh Government published a new 5 year eradication plan for bovine TB earlier this year and the Minister was updating members on progress, announcing increased testing responsibilities from February next year. This Sunday sees the first screening of a short film about a long distance swim from ‘source to sea' along Cumbria's River Eden. It's part of the session on outdoor swimming at the Kendal Mountain Festival and was undertaken by a familiar voice on this programme, common land and uplands expert, Julia Aglionby. Her aim was not just to enjoy the swim but assess the health of the river. All this week we're talking about brassicas. Mustard is a specialist crop, mainly grown in the east of England for the company Colman's. The majority of mustard seed that's used in Europe is brown seed, grown in Canada and last year drought there caused a shortage. The mustard grown in England tends to be a white seed, but now work is underway to enable English farmers to grow a new overwintered brown seed so the mustard market can be less reliant on Canada. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

In October 2022 Victoria Thompson and Janie Oates came First in the Female category of the Elite OMM, and were the only female team to finish in this category since 2016. The OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) is a 2 day test of navigation and mountain craft held in late October each year, typically in harsh weather conditions. It was first held in 1968 and occurs in a different geographic area each year, with competitors having to carry all food and equipment such as tent and stove, navigating through a series of checkpoints to a midway camp, then doing it all again on Day 2 after a suboptimal sleep. There are various distance courses (Elite, A, B), as well as Score courses (3 distances - these courses are about choosing checkpoints to collect in a given time). We talk about what made them want to take on this challenge, the preparation and the wet event weekend itself, as well as getting into some of the potential barriers to women in this type of event, and hill running in general. This chat was inspired by an interview of Janie and Victoria at Kendal Mountain Festival 2022 by Becky Vale.

Joy is...Love.Robbie Phillips is is a professional adventure climber and filmmaker from Edinburgh. His intrepid spirit has carried him across the globe, climbing, in his own words, 'every type of rock, in every style'. From an early career competing as part of the GB team and then working as the Scottish climbing team's head coach, he is now best known for his cutting edge ascents on alpine rock, including becoming the first Briton to climb the infamous 'Alpine Trilogy'. One of his latest challenges was climbing the world's hardest sea cliff ‘The Longhope' on St John's Head, Orkney, along with his climbing partner, Alex Moore. This big wall sea cliff had previously only been attempted by the most famous rock climbers, including Ed Drummonds and Dave Macleod. The documentary film that Robbie made of the effort, ‘Not a Hope in Hoy', premiered at Kendal Mountain Festival in 2022. I spoke to Robbie as he was putting the finishing touches to preparations for his upcoming 'Edge of the World' speaking tour, in both his capacity as a world-respected athlete and as a content curator with a flair for telling stories in an incredibly human, relatable manner.Robbie is nothing but himself, and our conversation gives a flavour of his deep and sincere connection to his country, to the natural world and to the 'tribe' that he has found few climbing. What became clear as we spoke is that Robbie's drive and hunger for adventure comes, not from the destinations, but from the journeys: the most significant of which has been with himself. He comments at one point that he doesn't really remember who he was before climbing: for him, it is the start, the vehicle and the fuel. Here are the traces of Robbie's journey, told with his characteristic, candour, humour, creativity and heart. There is no destination, only discovery – that's what makes it exciting.Instagram: @robbiephillips_You Tube: @RobbiePhillipsNot A Hope in Hoywww.robbieclimbs.comwww.urbanuprising.org Hosted on Acast. My guest this month perhaps understands this better than most. After all, he's dedicated his life to documenting remarkable journeys; whether that's first ascents on Baffin Island or following my recent guest Jesse Dufton lead up the Old Man of Hoy, a remarkable feat for someone almost entirely blind. Al Lee's resulting film Climbing Blind has so far won the Grand Prize at the Kendal Mountain Festival and the Best Climbing Film at the Torello Mountain Film Festival. Inevitably there are plenty more gongs on its way. Why? Well, Al makes his films with such humanity, such a strong narrative hook, and avoids all the cliches. Let him tell you how he does it.

What is it that pushes them to the limit of human endurance and why do they feel the need to do it. This time we’re speaking to Jesse Dufton. So who is Jesse? Well, he’s a climber. A good one. His dad first took him climbing at the 2. At the age of 11, he led his first route. His climbing life continued through his uni years, and then recently he led a climb on the Old Man of Hoy. So far, so impressive, but what you may not know about Jesse is that he is almost completely blind. His story, told in the film Climbing Blind, is touring now. Catch it at the Kendal Mountain Festival or on the BritRock tour. But first, listen in to his remarkable story.

This week my guest is Beth French. Yep, the Beth French. For anyone who doesn't know, Beth set out to swim the Oceans 7 in 12 months. Seven channel swims in a 12 month period. That's one every 7 weeks. A filmmaker recorded her journey, and the film, Against the Tides, is currently being screened around the UK. I saw the film before I spoke to Beth, and before we had even talked about her being on the podcast I had messaged her just to tell her what an impact it had had on me - one line in particular. The line was, "You just need to let go of whatever is holding you back". You're right, I thought. But if it was that easy we'd all be doing it and therapists would all be out of a job. There is so much to reflect on in what Beth shares in the 50 minutes we spoke for. But one of the most interesting things is about the stories that get told, and who gets to tell them. The narrative for the film quickly became about, in Beth's words, a rags to riches health story where she overcame ME and did the Oceans 7. Beth had hoped it would be an environmental story, drawing the contrast between not only being fit enough to swim in the sea, but the fact that the sea has to be fit enough to swim in. This isn't the angle the media were interested in. A central part of Beth's story in Against the Tides is Dylan. Dylan is Beth's son. Beth became an adventurer after having Dylan, which in no way fits the dominant narrative in our culture about adventurers. In the stories that get told most often, the adventurers are men. When they are women, they are single and childfree. Adventuring is given up when they become mothers. Not so for the men, who can continue adventuring as fathers, without external judgement, it would seem. It is extremely rare for women to take up adventuring after becoming a parent. This is what Beth did, and the reasons are central to her story. She talks a lot about listening to her own voice, and 'choosing different'. Beth's adventure narrative is also unusual, in that it doesn't conform to the 'never give up' or the 'bigger, better, faster, more' narrative that many outdoorsy documentary films follow. Beth does not complete the challenge (spoiler alert!) and her exploration of that is fascinating. People who are the first at anything that we haven't seen before are always curiosities. They have to pave the way for others to follow in their wake. Beth certainly demonstrates what it means to find your own path, to follow your own voice and to make choices that other people may not like nor understand, but that are right for you. She is just a normal person. But she is also so much more. Full episodes and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com Episode 065 and it is the final part of my loose Kendal Mountain Festival omnibus this week as I chat to photographer Dan Milner about his career and life in travel. A truly fascinating story this, as Dan recounts the long, strange trip he has been on since the early 1990s. As a photographer and writer, Dan is equally at home documenting political unrest in South Africa, following Jeremy Jones throughout the making of the Higher/Deeper/Further trilogy, or undertaking pioneering bike trips to North Korea. He’s also an articulate, wry and sometimes spiky presence, alive to the experiences on offer throughout the world, but also aware of the inherent contradictions involved in living such a lifestyle. Naturally, our conversation covered all of this ground, and we also delved deep into Dan’s motivations for following this roving life for so long. This one is also an object lesson in how, if you're lucky, being single-minded, talented and dedicated to a life of experience can enable a career to unfold around you. I always enjoy Dan’s company, and we had a great time catching up and looking back over his career in this one. Big thanks as ever to Matt Ward for the theme tune.

Full episode info and Show Notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com New favourite guest alert! I very much enjoyed this serendipitous conversation with climber, adventurer and explorer Leo Houlding, recorded at the Kendal Mountain Festival in November 2018. Leo was at the festival to promote his film Spectre, about the expedition of the same name that saw him and companions Mark Sedon and Jean Burgun kite ski across Antarctica before attempting to climb Spectre, a peak deep in the Transantarctic Range, before kiting back across the continent to get home. This hugely ambitious project is an example of what Leo calls ‘21st century exploration’, and as we chatted I realised that through such expeditions Houlding is quietly reinventing our notions of adventure by marrying the scale and ambition of traditional exploration with a modern action sports sensibility. It’s a completely innovative approach that raises some rather interesting ethical questions about the whole business of polar exploration and the very notion of adventure itself in the modern era, something we discussed at entertaining length during our chat. We also explored one of the great over-arching themes of the Looking Sideways podcast: the relativity of risk, and the ways in which athletes like Leo justify risk in the face of the danger they voluntarily place themselves in, amid the wider arc of encroaching maturity. Leo is a great conversationalist, transparent and honest, and as all great conversations do this one took on a life of its own as we explored his recent adventures, inner motivations and utterly unique viewpoint on the current state of adventure. Thanks as ever to Matt Ward for the theme tune.

Full episode info and Show Notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com I welcomed true adventure royalty onto the show for episode 027, when I met up with the great Rick Ridgeway. Rick, a legendary mountaineer and adventurer, was part of the first American team to summit K2; just one highlight in a career full of firsts and achievements. Today, he is Vice President of Public Engagement at Patagonia, using the insights accrued from a lifetime of adventuring to help shape Patagonia's environmental activities. Whether it's the hugely influential Worn Wear, or the recent campaign against President Trump, Rick is involved and leading from the front. In this conversation, recorded at the Kendal Mountain Festival in November 2017, we discuss the environmental challenges we all face, how nature and wildness can influence an individual’s sense of mortality and humbleness, and the importance of safeguarding your own values. It was a true privilege this one, and I hope you enjoy listening to the wisdom of this wonderfully articulate and generous orator as much as I did. Thanks to Scott Nixon (www.scottnixon.co.uk) for post-production help and Matt Ward (www.linguistine.com) for the theme tune. Big thanks to Alex Weller and Chloe Longstaff for helping hook this one up.
