Faith Fringes Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2023 41:18

Welcome to another episode of Soul Care for Therapists! In this episode, Dawn Gabriel is joined by Jane Carter, a renowned business coach and psychotherapist. Jane is known for her expertise in helping people achieve their goals and create a meaningful life. She brings a holistic approach to her work, blending spirituality and business principles. Dawn and Jane dive deep into the concept of treating your business like the slow food movement, emphasizing the importance of mindful growth and avoiding the pitfalls of comparison and rapid scaling. About Jane Carter As both a business coach and a psychotherapist, Jane loves helping people navigate the path to achieving their goals for a meaningful life. She applies these principles in her own life in the mountains of Asheville, NC, where she's an outdoorswoman, world-traveler, dog-mama, and coffee-shop connoisseur. Jane offers individual coaching as well as her 9-month Mighty Mastermind to help solopreneurs create a business (and life) they love. Embracing the Spiritual Side of a Therapy Practice Dawn introduces Jane Carter, an esteemed guest who has a well-rounded view of business and spirituality. Jane believes that our businesses are here to grow us, and they can be arenas where we experience spiritual growth. She quotes Teihard de Chardin, saying, "We're not human beings having a spiritual experience. We're spiritual beings having a human experience." Jane emphasizes the idea that everything we do can be considered spiritual, including our work and business endeavors. She encourages us to bring our full selves into everything we do, including our businesses. The Slow Food Movement of Growing a Private Practice Jane compares her coaching style to the slow food movement, which originated in Italy as a pushback against the fast-paced culture surrounding food. The slow food movement emphasizes savoring the food, appreciating where it comes from, and enjoying the process of its creation. Similarly, Jane encourages her clients to adopt a slow and deliberate approach to business. She addresses the pressure to scale and grow rapidly, which often leads to burnout and a loss of self. Jane suggests embracing the process and savoring each step along the way, allowing for personal growth and alignment with one's values. The Dangers of Comparison and Social Media Dawn and Jane discuss the harmful effects of comparison, particularly in the age of social media. Jane acknowledges that social media can make us feel bad about ourselves, especially when we compare our behind-the-scenes reality with others' polished highlight reels. She urges caution when consuming social media content and emphasizes the need to recognize the curated nature of what is being presented. Jane shares that she hires someone to manage her social media presence to avoid getting sucked into the comparison game. Practical Tips for Mindful Business Growth Dawn asks Jane for practical advice for her coaching clients who are looking for alternatives to rapid growth. Jane advises against comparing oneself to others and suggests getting clear on what you truly want. She emphasizes the importance of aligning your business goals with your values and creating a business that feels right for you. Jane shares her personal journey of realizing that a small boutique coaching practice was what she truly desired, rather than a large-scale operation. She encourages listeners to consider not just the financial aspects but also the overall feel and experience they want their business to embody. The Importance of Red Flags and Warning Signs Identifying Red Flags is key to being mindful. Jane emphasizes the significance of recognizing red flags that indicate a lack of balance and self-neglect. She advises paying attention to warning signs such as feeling burnt out, neglecting friendships, or neglecting personal well-being. "I'm feeling really burnt out. I'm feeling kind of crispy around the edges." Prioritizing Personal Connections to avoid burnout. You do not want to get to the point where you are exhausted and you hate your life. Dawn shares her experience of prioritizing personal connections over her to-do list. She emphasizes the importance of structuring business activities to align with personal values and goals. "This is the life I wanna live, so I am gonna let go of my to-do list." Recognizing Subtle Signs of Imbalance Listening to your body helps you recognize burnout. Jane points out the significance of paying attention to subtle signs of imbalance, such as increased irritability or discomfort. These signs serve as reminders to slow down and evaluate priorities. "If I'm cussing more than usual, that's a sign. I'm really irritable and that means I haven't tended to my soul." Remember to check in with yourself. Dawn highlights the importance of self-awareness and the need to slow down to recognize the nuances of discomfort or unease. She encourages individuals to evaluate the source of their anxiety or hesitation. "You have to slow down to know if it's fear-based or if it's not resonating with your soul." Action Steps: Identify Red Flags: Take time to identify personal red flags or warning signs that indicate a lack of balance and self-care. Pay attention to feelings of burnout or neglecting personal relationships. Listen to Your Body: Slow down and listen to your body's subtle signals. Notice signs of increased irritability or discomfort, as they may indicate the need for self-care and introspection. Evaluate Business Alignment: Regularly assess your business activities and marketing efforts. Notice if they align with your values and authentic self. Trust your gut instincts and make adjustments if something feels misaligned. Build a Supportive Community: Seek out a mastermind group or community of like-minded individuals who can provide honest feedback and support. Surround yourself with people who encourage personal and professional growth. Practice Self-Compassion: Celebrate your wins and achievements, no matter how small.   Stop Comparing Yourself to Others: Break free from the comparison trap and stop measuring our worth based on others' highlight reels. Constantly comparing ourselves to others on social media can foster discontentment and hinder our ability to appreciate and embrace our own unique journey and accomplishments. As we enter year three of the pandemic, the virus is winning. That sober assessment comes from a Special Envoy of the World Health Organization, Dr. David Nabarro. “Its winning because we have not presented a united front against it,” Nabarro explains. “and that can only be possible if world leaders work properly together.” Global GoalsCast sits in on one of Nabarro's Covid-19 briefings with public health workers from around the world. “Unless we do this together this virus is going to beat us,” Nabarro warned, saying he and others were planning to focus next year on lobbying governments to improve cooperation against this pandemic, not just future ones. Vaccines need to be more equitably distributed, Nabarro said, yet at the same time the world needs to recognize that vaccines save lives but do not end transmission of the virus, especially with the more transmissible Delta and Omicron variants. Stopping them requires better adherence to non pharmaceutical measures like masking and social distancing. “There is no excuse for not wearing face masks,” Nabarro said. “We cannot fight the virus if we are fighting each other,” said Co-Host Edie Lush. “Amen,” replied Co-Host Claudia Romo Edelman. Looking at photos of young Rosie as a child, it is almost impossible to comprehend that she would grow up to become one of Britain's most notorious female murderers. But Rose's early life made her the perfect partner for Fred West, and the two committed a string of murders in Gloucester throughout the '70s and '80s. Her part in the killings is very different to that which many people believe even today. What happened to that little girl to make her capable of such violence? Or was there something wrong - a predisposition to cruelty - which she was born with? Crime writer Jane Carter Woodrow goes back to the start of Rose's life to piece together what it was that turned her into a monster. In doing so, she presents us with a profile of the young Rose West and a fascinating insight into the mind of a killer. Rose West is a gripping listen that sheds light for the first time on the real story of Rose West - taking the listener on a journey from her childhood through to her becoming the country's biggest and most infamous female sexual predator and serial killer.

'Leave No One Behind' is the central, transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Translating this bold global commitment into an action-oriented mindset and result is a tall order. Is it possible to achieve a better future for all? It's hard to deliver this in practice, but it's also easy to be sceptical about inclusive development. In this episode, Jane Carter joins the show. We speak about why your mindset in private practice will change everything, especially during COVID-19. Jane's motto is imperfect action. Instead of experiencing constant panic, we can use this moment to relax and reframe. Jane explains the various ways we can use our time during the coronavirus and why we need to focus on the things that we can control. Meet Jane Carter Jane Carter, LPC is a counselor and business coach from Asheville, NC. Jane has spent the last several years in private practice as a counselor and has recently begun focusing more on business coaching, not only for therapists but other businesses as well.  Her website is: JaneCarterCoaching.com Jane says, “As a therapist, business coach, and life coach, I love helping people navigate the path to achieving their goals for a meaningful life. I apply these principles in my own life in the mountains of Asheville, NC, where I'm an outdoorswoman, world-traveler, dog-mama, food-and-wine lover, reader, and coffee-shop connoisseur. (I'm also known for making up great puns on the fly).” The Mindset in Private Practice We've all got crap. Our job is to help people turn it into fertilizer, which is the work of what all therapists are doing. The way you grow your business can be very healing of some of that deeper stuff without you even realizing it. It just feeds Jane's soul to do this work. It's fun to be with people on this journey. Imperfect Action Jane's motto is imperfect action. Right now, we're recording this podcast during the current virus crisis where we're in lockdown; we are at home. I think a lot of people experienced this kind of sudden panic. Jane put together a mindset checklist of short-term strategies and long-term strategies. A lot of people are feeling overwhelmed at this moment. So Jane hopes that people mostly focus on their mindset right now. To be in business is just to be dealing with the problems that come up regularly. We should relax, reframe, and use this moment. Have a Moment Anxiety and fear make us want to contract and get small and hide under the covers. It's hard to see beyond what we are going to do today, what are we going to do tomorrow? Sometimes we can get into that very reactive place. There are three things we need to do: Look at the big picture. Be intentional. See the expansion at this time. Fear and anxiety want us to contract, and this time may seek to expand us, some amazing things could come out of this time. How can we see an expansion at this moment? Private Practice as a Tool For Spiritual Growth We need to look at the big picture. The big picture is this will pass. Every challenge throughout history has given. The coronavirus will pass, we are going to get through this. Keeping that long view helps us to look at it kind of from a distance and go, okay, so what is our sense of purpose? When we look back at this moment in a couple of years, how do we want to say that we handled it? That's a spiritual thing. Do we want to make decisions from a place of love or a place of fear? When we're looking at the small picture and fear, it's easy to get into those thoughts of, well, how are we going to get the money?  When we look at the big picture, it gives us space to think about how we are serving people. We are here to fulfill our most profound purpose. So, when we go through a crisis, it's an excellent opportunity to think about your “why.” It's a gift to recommit and realign with why we are doing this. Figure Out What You Can Control We need to figure out the things that we can control. And then, the flip side is learning to just be with those feelings, to learn to be with the lack of control, to learn to be present with our grief and our fear, and just kind of allow it and wear it like a backpack. Jane wants to encourage people to be intentional at this time. We need to figure out how we want to use this time and who we want to be at this time? Look at the checklist and start checking things off. We can also be intentional about our goal for this time. What if it's possible that this is the greatest thing for our private practice? Thinking about that question then allows you to start seeing that. In this episode, Gordon talks again with Jane Carter, LPC about finding your “Superpowers” and priorities in private practice. Jane and Gordon share how their mindsets have shifted over time and how it has changed the focus of their practices.  Jane also shares how getting some business coaching changed her practice and helped her to grow exponentially. She also shares how she made the shift to doing more coaching rather than traditional therapy in her practice. They also talk about being able to embrace change and taking some risks. And, at the same time, being genuine to yourself and knowing your gifts. I apply these principles in my own life in the mountains of Asheville, NC, where I'm an outdoors woman, world-traveler, dog-mama, food-and-wine lover, reader, and coffee-shop connoisseur. (I'm also known for making up great puns on the fly).” First Pancakes Jane talks about how she has tried a few things that really have not worked so well for her as a counselor and a business coach.  She refers to these as “first pancakes”. If you have ever cooked pancakes, the first ones you try to make never turn out that good.  But you have to make that first one for the rest to be perfect. Our private practices are the same way. How you start out is probably not going to be at all like you end up.  There will be a huge learning curve and you will experience some failures along the way. But you have to always make the first pancake… Finding Your Superpowers Your “superpowers” are your gifts and talents as a person. Superpowers are also found in what you are passionate about.  Finding your superpowers means being able to discover what you do better than anything else. And when you do those things, you can do them almost effortlessly.  To find your superpowers it is important get feedback from others to know what they see in you that you might not have really noticed before. This is where coaching and finding a mentor can help so very much. Another way to think about “superpowers” is really to think about what your strengths might be.  By understanding and knowing yourself well, you can be more genuine and authentic with people. In many ways, it is what we help our clients with day in and day out.  We help them find their strengths and gifts to help them thrive in life. When we know our own “superpowers”, we are better able to live into how we can best help people. It makes us more authentic and genuine with what we do.  People will notice that and be drawn to it. Using Your Superpowers To Market Your Practice One of the keys things to remember about marketing is that people are drawn to what is genuine. In many ways, it is all about helping people discover how you can help them in their lives.  It's putting yourself in front of others and sharing with them how your superpowers can help them transform their lives. Building the Long Game The other thing to remember about growing a private practice, or any business for that matter, is to think about the “long game”. “Get rich quick” rarely works. But by being able to think long-term and be content with steady growth, we are usually much more satisfied and content.  Sharing your superpowers as a clinician, people will notice it as being genuine and authentic. Ultimately, being able to know yourself well and discover your true strengths and abilities will help you be much more successful.  It is where our superpowers live. By embracing our superpowers, we become much more effective as clinicians and human beings in general.
