Director Kyle Edward Ball had a nightmare as a child: "I was in my parents' house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster." Turns out, this is a nightmare a lot of people have had. After honing this craft on his YouTube channel, he finally made his film… and then it leaked online. Joined by Ball himself and Dread Central's editor-in-chief MaryBeth McAndrews, Anna explores how SKINAMARINK became the perfect haunted house movie for the internet age. Season 6, titled Haunted Homes, explores how haunted house movies have mirrored our relationship with our homes. Each episode visits a horror movie that changed the way we imagine a haunted house, from the crumbling Gothic mansions to white picket fences, what it says about the people who live in the houses and what scares them the most.  Guest written and hosted by Anna Bogutskaya. Find her book on horror films and feelings, FEEDING THE MONSTER, online and in all good bookshops. A voi, come sempre l'ultima parola.

In this episode the Hanna's dive into one of the scariest, if not the scariest movie of the 2020s, Skinamarink. They are joined by friend of the show and resident scardy-cat, Preston, who surprisingly was not the only one in over his head when it came to this twisted film. Skinamarink was written and directed on a shoestring budget by Kyle Edward Ball. The film takes audiences on a chilling journey into the depths of human depravity with a focus on psychological terror and unsettling imagery. Our hosts dissect the film's eerie atmosphere and its exploration of the darkest corners of the human psyche. From the negative space that lets your mind run wild to the erie performances by disembodied voices, they analyze the elements that make "Skinamarink" a standout entry in the horror genre. One of the things we find so interesting about Skinamarink is that it might just be unspoilable. Don't get me wrong… we try to spoil it, sure. But, just as all films are largely a partnership between viewer and creators, this one is supercharged by your own fear in a way that we find difficult to classify. It was Tommy's pick this month, and he went with this single film as a marker of the first time in his own memory as a horror movie lover that he reports geniune fear in the watching of it. Turns out, writer/director Kyle Edward Ball's journey through childhood trauma and fear in western Alberta has some real legs. If you haven't considered it, this show is just a part of The Next Reel Film Podcasts membership program. Kim und Denise erforschen, wie Liminal Spaces ein Gefühl der Entrücktheit und (Alb-)Traumhaftigkeit erzeugen. Few mediums can capture the abstract and often contradictory nature of “dream logic” the way film can. Particularly genre film. Anyone familiar with the works of David Lynch knows that well. And to define the dream logic, perhaps Lynch summed it up best when he said “Cinema can say abstract things. It can say things that are difficult to say with words. And sometimes, if I'm lucky, ideas come for those types of things in the middle of the story – things that are difficult to say with words.” Occasionally, a filmmaker comes along who takes all the preconceptions we have about our beloved genre and flips them on their head. By ditching the safety nets we're used to – the tropes, the narrative beats, in this case…THE SCORE! – well, all bets are off. We're now in the hands of someone who wants to show us things we may not understand but if we can be open to it and connect with the film on its terms, the results can be nerve shattering. Which is exactly what has happened with the film “Skinamarink”. Kevin sat down to watch this movie knowing next to nothing about its premise or style, he just knew that its eerie poster (a child sitting on the floor, his back to us, in a blue tinged dark hallway, the image upside down) and the title which touched upon childhood memories of sing-song that shouldn't be unsettling but are when placed in this context, had him more than a little intrigued. This isn't a film you watch. It's a film you surrender to. The films creator is Kyle Edward Ball. We highly encourage all our listeners to watch the film (it's available now on Shudder) before listening to this discussion with Kyle. “Skinamarink” is an experience you want to have with as little knowledge of its machinations as possible.  Kyle and Kevin explore Kyle's love of 70's cinema, both genre and otherwise, why a filmmakers influences may not come from genre filmmakers, the impact having his movie leaked online before its release had on his film and making a movie that is deliberately loaded with contradictions. Turn of the lights and throw on some public domain 1930's cartoons and let's immerse ourselves in the upside-down world of “Skinamarink” with Kyle Edward Ball.  ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Then (37:34-End), they discuss the box office hit of the year thus far, "M3GAN" including how the conceit of a maniacal life-size doll was played for both scares and laugh, if it was at all held back by its PG-13 rating, if it conveyed a meaningful message about outsourcing parenting to technology and much more! This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt relive their lo-fi, what the hell is HD, glory days of the 90's with the experimental horror film that's dividing audiences, ‘Skinamarink'. Has director Kyle Edward Ball redefined horror cinema? Or is this a one-off shiny little trinket easily forgotten? Then it's on to the Netflix adaptation of ‘All Quiet On The Western Front', this time actually made by a German. Does the fervent anti-war message carry through or are we just revisiting another ‘1917' debacle. There's the luminous yet refined rundown of the big releases on Physical Media, featuring the Streaming and Straight to DVD Picks of the Week. Finally, Matt and Chris close out the show with having to make some impossible choices. It's Call It! So settle in, bust out those Lego sets and don't get shot trying to steal some eggs Dave! In undoubtedly the most twisted double feature we've yet to conceive, this episode focuses on a pair of films centered on the vulgar, animalistic urges which threaten to undo not only our relations with those we thought we loved but even our own attainment of anything resembling contentment or peace. You guessed it, we're tackling The Misfits and Dunston Checks In! But before we get around to horse wrangling and monkey business, this edition's Blue Plate Special prompts a discussion of two flawed yet thrilling new releases in Gerard Butler's latest action flick Plane and the feature film debut of Kyle Edward Ball with Skinamarink, an experimental chiller certain to divide audiences. We have a bit of a divergence on the relative artistic worth of John Huston's 1961 neo-western starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, a project weighed with perhaps too much pretext for its own good. But rest assured, we reconcile in firm agreement over the profane profundity of 1996's premier pongo pygmaeus. In the latest ep, Robs Daniel and Wallis talk a whole bunch of movies. The pair open by giving their verdict on Babylon, Damien Chazelle's new picture, starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, and a cast of thousands. The movie takes a look at the wild days of Hollywood 1927, but does it capture the party atmosphere? The Robs end with M3GAN, the new killer doll movie from Blumhouse, starring Allison Williams. Is this one a slick, well-oiled fear machine or do the gears grind? Listen in to find out! Rob Wallis has been a particularly busy cinemagoer and gives his opinion on two indie horror flicks. Enys Men, the new folk horror from Mark Jenkins, the director of Bait, and Skinamarink, the unnerving mindscrambler from Kyle Edward Ball.
