This week was the opening of the 2025 World Zionist Congress Elections.  On the show, I welcome Rabbi Josh Weinberg to talk about the meaning of this momentous opportunity to support Israel.  Rabbi Weinberg is the URJ Vice President for Israel and Reform Zionism and the Executive Director of ARZA.  Please listen to have your voice heard and direct more than $1 Billion of funding for Israel. The World Zionist Organization (WZO) and the World Zionist Congress (WZC) are central nongovernmental institutions in Israel.  While not a part of the Israeli government, “The Parliament of the Jewish People” represents a variety of Israeli political parties, their platforms and visions for Israeli society.     The WZO was founded by Theodor Herzl in Basel, Switzerland in 1897 at the first World Zionist Congress. Even though they predate the State of Israel, the country's founders knew that to succeed it had to be a project of the entire global Jewish People. They baked the WZO and WZC into the Democratic process of Israel as the one way for Diaspora Jews to have a say in the important Issues facing the Jewish People and Jewish State.  Often called “The Parliament of the Jewish People,” the WZC convenes every five years to bring together representatives from Jewish communities around the world to decide on key issues affecting the Jewish people in Israel and globally.  The Congress elects the leadership of the WZO, sets policies, and influences the allocation of significant funding of about $1 billion annually.  VOTE HERE:  www.azm.org LEARN ABOUT THE REFORM MOVEMENT SLATE HERE: https://www.vote4reform.org/ Check out this video to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGWRp7_vZH8&t=10s If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe and follow Temple Israel on social media to stay up to date on Waking Up To Life.    Edited by: Alex Wolf Original Music Composed by: Dan Hacker   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/templeisraelmi  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/templeisraelmi/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLn9spWvsCBvcQ-o5XLeFLHKcLoj2nBAfM  Web: https://www.temple-israel.org/wakinguptolifepod  You can get this podcast anywhere you get your media.  Join over 10,000 listeners who have been inspired by the show. The World Zionist Congress turns 125 this week. The international organization bills itself as a kind of global Jewish parliament, setting policies for major Israeli institutions and allocating more than a billion dollars a year to support them. Usually, the delegates meet every five years in Israel; this Sunday, August 28, however, they'll be meeting in Basel, Switzerland, where Theodor Herzl convened the very first iteration of the congress in 1897. The World Zionist Organization is holding two days of events in Basel to mark what's being called the most significant Zionist gathering this decade, featuring leading speakers such as Israel's president and Canadians Gil Troy, Sylvan Adams and Danna Azrieli. Given the weight of the event, it's no surprise that David Matlow, the world's leading collector of Herzl memorabilia and a regular CJN contributor, is heading to Basel to attend. Matlow joins the show to give a taste of what the first Congress was like and what challenges still face Zionists today. In a signing ceremony in Yerushalayim two weeks ago of the World Zionist Organization,a coalition that included the Orthodox Union, Yeshiva University, Touro College, Bnei Akiva, AMIT, the RCA, the National Council of Young Israel and Torah Mitzion resulted in Yaakov Hagoel, being named the organization's first religious Jew to serve as the Chairman of the Executive. The agreement signed distributed control over Zionist institutions and departments to a wide range of Jewish organizations and factions, from Orthodox to Reform and from Right to Left. This prompted Agudath Israel to issue a "Statement on Charedi Principles" explaining why they did not join and claiming that those who did were acquiescing to the dogmatic statements that were part of the The Jerusalem Program's foundations of Zionism which are:"Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, it brought about the establishment of the State of Israel, and a Jewish, Zionist, democratic and secure State of Israel is the common responsibility of the Jewish people for its continuity and future. The State of Israel and Jerusalem, its capital, is central in the life of our nation.Aliyah to Israel from all countries and the effective integration of all immigrants into Israeli society is a goal we must work for.Strengthening Israel as a Jewish, Zionist and democratic state and shaping it as an exemplary society with a unique moral and spiritual character, marked by mutual respect for the multi-faceted Jewish people, needs to be inculcated to our children as something to constantly strive for.Eretz Yisroel's destiny is rooted in the vision of the prophets, striving for peace and contributing to the betterment of the world. We will ensure the future and the distinctiveness of the Jewish people by furthering Jewish, Hebrew and Zionist education, fostering spiritual and cultural values and teaching Hebrew as the national language;Despite being geographically spread throughout the world,we will nurture mutual Jewish responsibility, defend the rights of Jews as individuals and as a nation, and represent the national Zionist interests of the Jewish people, and struggle against all manifestations of anti-Semitism.We will do all in our power to further thesettling of the country as an expression of practical Zionism."The Agudah deems these ideas, which give such prominence to statehood as a rejection of Torah as the major factor that defines our people and in essence condemned persons identifying as Charedi for joining the group. It may be early in the game to play the holocaust card, but in a desperate effort to hold onto the radical Right, Benjamin Netanyahu took a page out of history, erased all evidence of accuracy and rewrote a version palatable only to the most rabid of rabbis. So consumed with the need to remain in power, Netanyahu is willing to give Adolph Hitler a pass on being the architect of the Holocaust. In order to cast the Palestinians in the worst light possible to date, Netanyahu told the World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem that it was the Palestinians who gave Hitler the idea of exterminating the Jews. Without a shred of proof to back up the outrageous claim, the distressed leader went on to relate a farfetched tale of a meeting between Haj Amin al-Husseini, (the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem) at the time and Adolph Hitler himself where the Nazi maniac sought Husseini’s advice on what to do with his Jewish problem.According to Netanyahu, Hitler only wanted to expel the Jews from Germany, but Husseini convinced Hitler to burn them, because they’d only come to Palestine. According to Benjamin Netanyahu, if only those two men had never met, Adolph Hitler would have come up with a more humane solution than his Final Solution. According to Netanyahu’s version of events, were it not for Palestinian influence, six million Jews could have been spared. Facts be damned, that’s what Netanyahu said.
