This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with the author of the 33 ⅓ book dedicated to the legendary Britpop band Pulp's renowned album This is Hardcore, Jane Savidge. As co-founder and co-head of legendary PR company Savage & Best, Jane Savidge is widely credited as being one of the main instigators of the Britpop movement that swept the UK in the mid 1990s. During this time, Savage & Best represented Suede, Pulp, The Verve, Elastica and Longpigs, whilst representing many other artists of the era including the Cranberries, The Fall, and Jesus and Mary Chain. She is the author of Lunch With The Wild Frontiers (2019) and Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up and More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers (2022). This Is Hardcore is Pulp's cry for help. A giant, sprawling, flawed masterpiece of a record, the 1998 album manages to tackle some of the most inappropriate grown-up issues of the day – fame, aging, mortality, drugs, and pornography – and still come out crying and laughing on the other side. In this episode host Michael Shields and Jane Savidge dig into the weighty themes present in This is Hardcore revolving around fame, aging, success, and pornography. They expound upon the “Michael Jackson Incident” which propelled lead singer Jarvis Cocker to unfathomable fame, how Jarvis used music and the crafting of This is Hardocre as catharsis for his real life struggles, what the final legacy of Pulp might be, and ultimately they celebrate a 33 ⅓ book that serves as a love letter to a remarkable album.Grab a copy of Jane Savidge's This is Hardcore here!
Welcome to OUR BLOODY OBSESSION, a gorecast for the extreme created by two women whose bloody obsession is with all things nasty. Hosted by Zobo With A Shotgun (Zoë Rose Smith) and Venal Anatomica (Kelly Gredner). You asked and we of course delivered by covering low budget indie horror film LONG PIGS from 2007. In this episode Kelly & Zoë briefly chat about the mockumentary comedy horror (we're not so sure about the comedy bit...) and then answer some of our listener questions about extreme horror movies in general. From what's our post-disturbing movie watch aftercare to our expectations on Tom Six's The Onania Club to gateway extreme horror films.
This week we're talking about the award-winning musical Standing at the Sky's Edge, which finally transferred from Sheffield to The Olivier at London's National Theatre. It's based on the music and lyrics of songwriter, guitarist and producer Richard Hawley who's known both as a solo artist and for his work with the bands Pulp and The Longpigs. He collaborated with the award-winning playwright, lyricist and theatre-maker Chris Bush who deftly wove Richard Hawley's music into this compelling story. The musical tells the story of one flat in Park Hill, Sheffield's notorious brutalist housing project and moves from the early sixties, when Park Hill first opened, to today. Chris Bush intertwines three tales of the characters who lived there: an idealistic young couple seeing Park Hill as a step up, three asylum seekers escaping the Liberian war and finally a young middle-class woman from London fleeing a broken heart. It's directed by Rob Hastie the Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres and he tells us about how this extraordinary project came about and why what happened to Park Hill is so symbolic of recent British history, from post-war socialist optimism, via the decline of our major industries, to today's attempts to regenerate our cities. It's had rave reviews, and if you like Richard Hawley's poetic music, you're in for an absolute treat. It's fast-becoming the most talked-about play, so listen in to find out more.

25 years since the first ever V Festival, David runs through the line-up with songs from Pulp, Longpigs, Supergrass, The Wannadies, The Cardigans and Cast.
In this episode, I chat to Tim Woods, author of 'Love In The Time of Britpop'. He talks all things, Sheffield, from the bands - Longpigs, Pulp, er Gomez, student unions, beer and a chance encounter with TFI's Chris Evans.
In this episode, as you will discover if you listen, which serves as a bridge between what the podcast has been for the last two and a half years and where it is (hopefully) heading, Kevin interviews himself. Or, more accurately, his wife Wendy was kind enough to facilitate a discussion and the two of them chop it up about gateway drugs into girl pop, real hip-hop, and giving people their flowers. I love you so will you marry me". Escuchar audio

The Britpop Show with David Marsden, and songs by Oasis, Blur, Pulp, The Charlatans, Verve, Echobelly, Cardigans and Longpigs...
Richard Hawley is a Sheffield musical legend and fellow Sheffield Wednesday fan. He is a critically-acclaimed guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer. Hawley initially found success as a member of Britpop band Longpigs in the 1990's, and formerly Treebound Story. Richard was asked to play with Pulp by his close friend and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker. Since then he has created many of his own solo albums to great acclaim and winning several awards, and even been responsible for a stage musical featuring his songs called 'Standing at the Sky's Edge'. His work proudly represents the mood and emotional meaning of growing up and living in Sheffield. He is also an in-demand session player, having collaborated with many world famous recording artists. Our discussion took place in a working men's club in Sheffield, and certainly tugged at my heartstrings... It's week two of Found Footage February and this time we're heading to Canada to chat with Chris Power, a guy who uses words like "verisimilitude", shares wisdom like "Killing is fun, murder isn't", and once interviewed a serial killer in the Canadian Fargo. Chris Power joins us to discuss his extremely overlooked faux-doc Long Pigs. Randy visits Mustang Island, Clark plays a game of Hide the Monster, Lord Battle (Russell) dicovers a long lost Ana Lily Amirpour film, and KillDozer (Justin) returns to share R.O.T.O.R.! Check out Chris' newest project, Blood Slinger below. We wrap up our reviews for 2014 with a Requested Review of the Longpigs, and their 1996 debut album The Sun Is Often Out. Smack dab in the middle of Britpop hysteria, Longpigs deliver an album that finds itself somewhere between the very British Suede and Pulp, while also nodding to bigger idea bands like Radiohead and Blur, while still maintaining a unique approach thanks to the guitar work of Richard Hawley. But is that enough? Tune in to find out. Ep. 34: “A Shit Barge Full of Long Pigs” - Roderick on the Line - Merlin Mann on HuffdufferThe Problems: Brobdingnagian morning cookies; the time LTJG David Roderick (USN) kind of maybe scared off a Zero with his rogue Colt M1911; Merlin windmills through his brief Kneepads and Floppy Epaulets Phase; why John thinks depths charges are a careless and potentially orphan-endangering pussy move; John discovers an oxidizing superpower—then struggles to find a cool name; Billy Joel and his stupid goddamned loose tie bullshit; Merlin tries in vain to keep his new bell a little special; fortifying your underwater home against an attack by Navy SEALs; nobody just “walks away” from a Coffeetology® audit; John poses for Playboy with his cripplingly handsome friend, Jon Hamm; post-mortem on ’30s gangster things; Pete Townshend is attacked by a long-range baby marmot cannon; “Oooooo, hey, everybody, look at me! I’m some Somalian guy and I give everybody tickets!”; that one time when John and Merlin shot big guns; methods for concealing your (standard) yacht from Malaccan pirates; The Dardanelles Mountain Goat; streamlining childbirth via the metaphorical ordnance of Battlestar Galactica (no, the 1978 one); a much-needed clinic for teaching ladies proper loogie aperture; Really? Wooden knife? Really?; no, sir, you can’t slip a urethra by John Roderick; fantasies of Elle Macpherson on a juicy and super-hot Copenhagen run; arriving late to the Damascan spy game—perhaps in a robe; in Soviet Ukraine, collaborators Vichy you; never hide stuff in the actual yogurt place, because that’s just what they’d be expecting; apolougies from the deferential bottom gangs of Canada; the gun that lets pirates know when business is meant; okay, so, we’ll give Turkey maaaaaaaybe a “7”; one headlamp per doorknob; years John was literally soaking in war; plus, John and Merlin finally prepare to launch Hitler ’n Stuff!
Julianne Moore and Ed Harris star in Game Change, HBO's television dramatisation of the 2008 Presidential Election. Moore plays Sarah Palin, the Alaskan governor plucked from relative obscurity to give Ed Harris' John McCain some much needed star power. Clare Short and Peter Hitchens review the programme. Brit Award and Mercury Music Prize-nominated musician Richard Hawley first found success as a member of the Longpigs and later, Pulp. His subsequent solo music has been strongly influenced by his childhood in Sheffield but his latest album is a change of musical direction. Standing at the Sky's Edge is a psychedelic rock album that Hawley describes less black and white than previous material. He told Mark why it was time to focus on more intricate guitar playing. As Swedish author Sven Lindqvist celebrates his 80th birthday, he explains why he thinks all his books are the same. Producer Nicki Paxman.
