Brit Pop! A term used for good and bad to describe a bunch of excellent bands coming out of the UK in the 90s. As usual, they were leading the charge in sounds and style making the rest of the world observers. Echobelly, with their killer sound ("Great Things", "King of the Kerb", "Insomniac" and more) and beautiful lead singer looked and sounded different and made a dent because of it. Unfortunately, when Brit Pop moved on, so did the spotlight leaving bands like Echobelly in its wake. This week we hear from lead singer Sonya Madan and guitarist Glenn Johansson about it all, how they picked themselves back up, the music they make now, how they get by and more. If you don't know them, you'll fall in love. www.echobelly.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

This week David runs through the line up for next year's Creation Day Festival, including bangers from Echobelly, Cast, Sleeper, Black Grape, Ash and Happy Mondays.
Echobelly with Glenn Johansson & Sonya Madan in conversation with David Eastaugh Madan and Johansson first met in a pub, with Sonya expressing her desire to sing in a band "I used to sing to myself as a child. I suppose I had a secret desire to sing", They soon teamed up with bass guitarist Alex Keyser and drummer Andy Henderson, who had previously played with PJ Harvey's band. Guitarist Debbie Smith, formerly of Curve, came on board in 1994. According to the Epic Records' website, the group came up with the name Echobelly from the notion of "being hungry for something". With Madan and Johansson as the band's songwriters, they recorded their debut EP, Bellyache, on the independent Pandemonium label in late 1993.
Welcome to Indie Heaven, the part of the James McMahon Music Podcast where I – that'll be James McMahon – connect with the bands I adored as a sapling and ask… what happened next? It's a spin-off of sorts of my Indie Heaven website – you can find that at www.indieheaven.co.uk – and on this episode I'm speaking to Sonya Madan and Glenn Johansson, Echobelly's ever constant singer and guitarist since their inception way back in 1992. Which isn't that long before I became a fan. I was well onboard by the time their debut album, Everybody's Got One swung around in 1994 – I think that album is a dark, broody, swirl of noise and I still find myself listening to it to this very day - and by the time album number two, the extremely successful On, was released the following year, the London band had become one of Britpops most iconic groups. It was a no brainer to feature the band on Indie Heaven and I'm hugely gratefult to Sonya and Glenn for finding time to speak to me for this episode, about race, the 90's music press, Echobelly's fall from commerciality and – buoyed by Britpop nostalgia – their return to prominence. The intro music on this episode is by the band Mavis. Any other music is by the band Imp. Indie Heaven and The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. S*M*A*S*H special with Ed Borrie in conversation with David Eastaugh Ed Borrie and Salvatore Alessi formed S*M*A*S*H after meeting at school in the mid-1980s - Salvatore had previously been in a band called GLC.Rob Hague joined soon afterwards. The band's sound recalled the late 1970s and early 1980s punk and new wave bands. The Britishmusic press were enthusiastic about the band creating a scene called New wave of new wave, along with similar UK bands of the time such as Echobelly, Sleeper, Compulsion and These Animal Men.[3] The band's second single was a tribute to feminism called "Lady Love Your Cunt".[1] It appeared on their debut mini album "S*M*A*S*H" which was a compilation of their first two limited edition 7" singles, and was well received by critics. The band made some appearances on UK TV programmes such as Naked City, as well as live performances, including a collaboration with Billy Bragg during an Anti-Nazi League rally. With a recording contract, the band toured tirelessly, increasing press coverage and attention from fans. The trio still found time to laugh at themselves, occasionally performing under the name S*H*I*T*E. The trio made an appearance on BBC Television's Top of the Pops, singing "Shame". They became the first to appear on the BBC's flagship chart show without officially releasing a single - their debut EP having reached number 26 in the UK Albums Chart. Their only hit single was "(I Want to) Kill Somebody", which was only available in the shops for one day in 1994. It reached number 26 in the UK Singles Chart. Its controversial subject matter eventually lead to its banning. Their debut full-length album, Self Abused, was not a commercial success, although the group remained a favourite of the critics. The band recorded a single for the Seattle based label Sub Pop, but S*M*A*S*H remained virtually unknown outside the UK, despite a whistle-stop tour of the United States and support slots across Europe. The EP "Another Love Song E.P." followed in 1995, before the group released their final single, "Rest of My Life", a year later. The band split up in 1996. In 1997 bass player Salv joined Carter USM as a full-time member, but in 2004 the trio reformed, recording a number of tracks for a forthcoming EP and playing several gigs around the UK.
Echobelly special with Glenn Johansson in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1992, Madan and Johansson first met in a pub, with Sonya expressing her desire to sing in a band "I used to sing a lot as a child. Saddle up, partners! This week we're piling into the old sheepdog-mobile as we discuss the soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber! 1994 was Jim Carrey's breakout year, and this film solidified him as a comedy force to be reckoned with. It's also wildly problematic and many of the jokes have not aged well. C'est la vie. However... The soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber is secretly brilliant! It features an all-time classic cover from Crash Test Dummies, as well as some true jangle-pop bangers from Pete Droge, The Sons and The Gigolo Aunts. We've also got Echobelly, The Proclaimers, and whatever the hell it is Green Jelly thinks they're doing... It's another fascinating snapshot of the rock-pop landscape of the mid-nineties. So join us as we embark on a multi-part journey through the soundtracks of the Farrelly Brothers! SHOW NOTES: Dumb and Dumber is available to watch here The cartoon that broke the universe INTRO: "Dance Rocket" by Jesse Spillane OUTRO: "Mockingbird" by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels MUSIC VIDEOS: Crash Test Dummies - "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" Deadeye Dick - "New Age Girl" Green Jelly - "The Bear Song" Willi One Blood - "Whiney Whiney" Have a soundtrack you'd like us to cover? My Life Story with Jake Shillingford in conversation At the time of their debut single, "Girl A, Girl B, Boy C" (1993) produced by Giles Martin son of George, the group had a regular line-up of twelve members. Though the membership fluctuated continually, it rarely dipped into single figures until 1999, when their third album credited just four regular members, though most of the former line-up were still used as session musicians. Their orchestral sound led them to be compared to groups such as Tindersticks and especially The Divine Comedy. Their debut album, Mornington Crescent was released on 10 January 1995. My Life Story enjoyed the most success at the time of their second album The Golden Mile, which was released on 10 March 1997. It spawned five singles that entered the lower half of the UK Singles Chart, but finally disbanded after a series of farewell concerts in December 2000. On 26 May 2006 the band reformed with the full line-up of thirteen members, to play at the Mean Fiddler (LA2) on Charing Cross Road in London, in support of their forthcoming Best Of album. The gig got a review rating of 10/10 from Planet Sound. A second reunion show took place at the Astoria in London on 8 December 2006. Further reunions have taken place every two years on 13 December 2007 at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, and Koko on 26 November 2009, where the band performed their debut album, Mornington Crescent, for the first time in its entirety. In 2009, it was announced that, to mark 15 years since their debut album, the group would reform and perform the album in full, together with later songs. This concert took place at KOKO which is next door to Mornington Crescent tube station. My Life Story announced that they were to reunite again to perform The Golden Mile at the Shepherds Bush Empire on 3 March 2012 to celebrate fifteen years since the album's release. In mid-2013 the group announced their first UK tour in 14 years. Singer Jake Shillingford is reported to have said: "For many years we have only been able to play a big London show due to the sheer size and scale of the band. Now I am able to take my songs out on the road with a stripped down tight rocking outfit." "I will be joined by various members of My Life Story along my journey around the UK, culminating in our traditional annual London concert with the original bunch, I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone again, expect a big, bold and brash performance, all foxy horns and horny foxes." In September 2016 My Life Story released their first single in 16 years, "24 Hour Deflowerer". The launch was marked with a two-night residency at The Borderline in London on 14–15 October, with all audience members receiving a numbered limited edition 7" vinyl of the single. My Life Story performed in the Star Shaped Festival, a Britpop revival tour, alongside The Bluetones, Space, Dodgy and Salad, in July/August 2017 and again in August/September 2018 together with Echobelly, Black Grape and The Supernaturals. The band's current five-piece line-up features Jake Shillingford (vocals), Nick Evans (guitar), Chris Hardwick (drums), Jack Hosgood (bass) and Aimee Smith (keys). The fourth My Life Story studio album, World Citizen, was crowd-funded with pre-orders from fans and was released on 6th September 2019. Described as "the best My Life Story album ever", World Citizen received review scores of 4/5 in The Express, 85% in Hi Fi News and 7/10 in Uncut The release will be followed by a UK tour in November.

The latest episode of the podcast which asks: is there such a thing as a trendy wank? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, drags us back to the dark Civil War of the mid-90s, when brother fought against brother over whether Roll With It was slightly less rubbish than Country House, and Oasis-loving loving wives imposed a 'nookie strike' upon their Blur-supporting husbands. Yes, it's the aftermath of the Battle of Britpop, and we fly over the rubble, dropping crates of analysis and sniping at assorted wrongness along the way. If you're expecting non-stop Sons and Daughters of Albion adopting Mockney accents and walking about about monkeys, however, you're going to be sorely disappointed, as there are a lot of - gasp! - Americans on it, and even some Irish people. Dale Winton reaches the pinnacle of the journey he started when he was playing records in a biscuit factory. Berri and De'lacy provide an interesting - sort of - compare-and-contrast of Anglo and American House. Michael Jackson lolls about in a CGI Greek temple with Elvis' daughter. The theme tune from Friends pops up. Fucking Boyzone show up for no reason whatsoever. Montell Jordan arses about in a theme park. Echobelly break up from school forever. Michael Bolton, looking like a giant Womble, asks if he can fondle us. Blur show off. Sarah Bee and Simon Price help Al Needham to walk through the minefield of Britpop like Lady Di, breaking off to discuss the early days of Television X, our shameful careers in pornography, watching Friends whilst ripped to the tits on Leytonstone speed, all the awards we've won and what we do with them, and - finally - Simon gets to talk about Romo. And Oh! what swearing! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Playing Tracks from Candlebox, Neal McCoy, Echobelly, Sloan, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Spearhead, Ken Mellons, Let Loose, Tracy Bonham and many more. Shawn Colvin's Cover Girl is in the Top Album Segment. Cleveland's Q is in the News Segment. Looking Back at Season 6 of The Simpsons and Shawshank Redemption. WCW Fall Brawl 1994 is in the Pro Wrestling Spotlight.
Playing Tracks from Edie Brickell, Inner Circle, PMD, Korn, Echobelly, Dru Down, White Zombie and many more. Looking back at Amy Grant's House of Love Album. Remembering NHL Lockout of 1994, Scarlett and Dumb and Dumber. Brutus Beefcake is the Pro Wrestling Spotlight.

Scott Carelli returns for part 2 of this expansive, trilogy of insanity to talk Inception, Christopher Nolan and Blackout. 00:01:28 - John shares his long journey of getting to see Inception on an IMAX screen. This leads to mini-reviews of Christopher Nolan's previous work. 00:14:36 - We debate the pacing and emotional impact of Inception. 00:17:31 - Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets some high praise for his work and John plays Casting Agent. Scott also theorizes why Leonardo DiCaprio was cast as the lead. 00:20:24 - Scott brings up a potential plot hole and continuity error, meaning SPOILERS here for Inception. The ending is also heavily discussed, of course. NOTE: Scott's issue with the film here will be fixed in a future episode. 00:32:13 - We talk a bit about Scott Pilgrim, both the books and the upcoming film. So far, John is not a fan of the source material but is seriously looking forward to the movie. 00:35:59 - John briefly geeks out about his love of film scores and soundtracks, with a big shout-out to The Inferno Music Vault. 00:39:15 - Is Michael Bay a better film maker than Christopher Nolan? How is this even a question? 00:42:12 - The new film, Devil reminds John of a 2007 film, Blackout. He made Scott watch Blackout. Scott proceeds to cry tears of blood for the remainder of this episode. The following artists can be heard in this episode: Leonardo DiCaprio & Ellen Page, Zack Hemsey, Hans Zimmer, Dreadzone, Tangerine Dream, Echobelly, Astral Projection, Metric, Paul Hertzog, Danzig, INXS, Better Than Ezra and James L. Venable.
The conclusion to this episode leaves brevity behind, as John and Scott talk at length about indie films, british television and superhero icons. 00:02:10 - Scott tried to watch New York, I Love You. He made it about halfway through. It was apparently that bad. 00:20:53 - Scott highly recommends the UK television series Skins, but only after the dreadful first episode. 00:30:04 - John took Scott's advice and watched the pilot for Life Unexpected. He loved the show and the characters, but decided to stop there, opting to quit while ahead. 01:01:50 - John and Scott share their thoughts on the 2-hour Smallville event, Absolute Justice as well as the show in general. 01:28:43 - Scott closes out the show with hopes that in the final season, Clark Kent will become Superman on Smallville. The following artists can be heard in this episode: Kevin Smith, Moby & Debbie Harry, Geographer, Adam Merrin, The Dollyrots, The Chemical Brothers, Lovedrug, They Eat Their Own, Echobelly, Josh Kramon, Bowling For Soup, Death Cab For Cutie, Electric President, The All-American Rejects, Cocteau Twins, John Ottman, Mark Snow, The Notwist, Stars, Smashing Pumpkins and The Crystal Method.
Just in time for his 17th Birthday, Will Ritchie from Geekeasy makes an appearance on the show. Could this be considered some manly rite of passage? Probably not, but you decide.00:02:50 - Will's been watching and loving Dead Like Me. This brings up lamentation of Bryan Fuller's recent experiences with the TV Gods.00:07:23 - How I Met Your Mother has become Will's new drug of choice. The nature and history of sitcoms and reality shows are discussed.00:15:28 - John likes making new friends through pop culture references. This leads into curiosity about Nathan Fillion's work. Will suggests that Joss Whedon and his entourage may be cursed.00:21:55 - Will schools John on Firefly's DVD exclusive episodes.
