In this episode of 'Behind the Hits,' we delve into the captivating story behind Tasmin Archer's iconic track, 'Sleeping Satellite,' released in 1992. Join us as we uncover the journey of a talented English artist who rose from the shadows of backing vocals to create a song that echoed a powerful critique of human nature.Tasmin Archer's musical journey began as a chorus member of the group Dignity in the late '80s, juggling various odd jobs to sustain her passion for music. From seamstress to secretary and even an employee at the Leeds tribunal, Archer's determination remained unyielding. Her breakthrough came when she crossed paths with musicians John Beck and John Hughes, altering the course of her life.During the summer of 1989, the trio crafted the instrumental for a song, but it lacked lyrics. Inspired by a news article commemorating the 20th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's first steps on the Moon, John Hughes discussed the idea with Tasmin Archer. The result? 'Sleeping Satellite,' a poignant reflection on the 1960s space race and humanity's unbridled competition to conquer Earth's natural satellite.Hosted by Ausha. Tasmin Archer, Goo Goo Dolls, Faith No More, Warren G., Nice Little Penguins og Crowded House. Playliste: Susanna Hoffs - My side of the bed Faith No More - Easy Tasmin Archer - Sleeping satellite Nice Little Penguins - Rain keeps on falling Mats Ronander - Gör mig lycklig nu Youssou N'Dour - & Neneh Cherry - 7 seconds Crowded House - Distant sun Scarlet - Independent love song Warren G feat.
It's Autumn 1992! Damn, Would I Lie To You?What an interesting time for the UK singles charts. Is it fair to say the decade was at some sort of apex point? Well, the tracklist for November's NOW, That's What I Call Music 23 album was certainly not giving us a clear a view of what the next big thing was going to be. Or was it?Whilst the start of the 90s had exploded with a colourful wave (or should that be rave?) of indie & dance, and very soon Britpop would take a steely and sneering guitar grip across the nation, 1992 almost seemed to be in a fascinating holding pattern. Not exactly the annus horribilus that some were calling it, and as always the NOW team were on hand to serve up a suitably compiled snapshot of musical delights (and Billy Ray Cyrus) for us to feast upon.Tasmin Archer, Sophie B Hawkins and Betty Boo led the way for some great female fronted pop moments, Arrested Development were providing an RnB laidback groove for the 90s, the Freddie Mercury tribute concert was still impacting across the charts and The Shamen were being, naughty, naughty, very naughty. But there was also a fair degree of retro feel to this edition of NOW. Was it the 80s (Simple Minds), 70s (ABBA) or 60s (Vanessa Paradis!)? TV advert songs - which brand of jeans were you buying? And don't even mention waistcoats! Just too funky for me...But even when things don't seem to be happening, there's always something happening. And there's no doubt that the 90s had plenty of excitement waiting around the corner!Joining me for this episode is author, visual artist and sometime musician Zoë Howe.Zoe has produced acclaimed biographies including The Slits, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Wilko Johnson, Stevie Nicks, Florence + The Machine, Lee Brilleaux and Poly Styrene and in 2021 was part of the team behind the award-winning documentary Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché. She has made radio programmes for Absolute Radio, Resonance FM and currently presents the Rock 'n' Roll Witch show on Soho Radio. Zoë's forthcoming book Witchful Thinking (a handbook for the modern Wise Woman) is to be published by Llewellyn in May 2022. And later this year will also see her revision of the book The Art of Punk released, and the launch of The Jam 1982, a collaboration with The Jam's Rick Buckler. Jonny's got the lurgy and Richard has been told off by a dentist. Also in this episode, struggling to recall Kim Basinger's music career, buying out of date sweets from Jeff Bezos's lock-up, going nuts with one of those suitcase cellophane machines, the pros and cons of space exploration, and whatever happened to Tasmin Archer? Plus, wanting a Hillman Imp over a Mini, going on a long trip in a Porsche Taycan, baristas racing high speed car chargers, EVs sounding like the choir of the dead, and everyone knew someone at college who had a didgeridoo. This episode also features two remarkable stories from listeners, one about a scary Kiwi car selling experience and one about trying to wee into a bottle at the wheel of a fast-moving Lotus. This week it's the accomplished producer/engineer/mixer Julian Mendelsohn! Julian's golden touch (and golden ears) created some of the most beloved songs of the 80s. He's responsible for legendary tracks like "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and "Always On My Mind" by Pet Shop Boys. He's also worked closely with artists like Level 42, Paul McCartney, Tasmin Archer, Kate Bush, Nik Kershaw, Killing Joke, Go West, Pseudo Echo, INXS, The Firm, Fine Young Cannibals, Peter Gabriel, Aztec Camera, and many many more. We hear about all of these artists, as well as his relationship with Trevor Horn that included work with Yes and ABC. If you loved the ear candy coming from the UK in the 80s and 90s, chances are Jules had something to do with it. Enjoy! www.morenoiz.com
I catch up with Tasmin Archer. Her single, "Sleeping Satellite," went to number one throughout Europe in 1992, including her native England. The single peaked at 32 in America. Tasmin talks about being a one-hit wonder in the States. Tasmin won the Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act in 1993. She went on to release two other albums. Her last, "On" in 2006. It's the traditional, heavily delayed EHPodcast Christmas Special! In addition to this, it also continues the current tradition of our podcasts starting with an impromptu apology from Chris regarding the appalling lateness of the episode. Anyway, enough of that. Remember Christmas 2017? Remember how the Doctor went through a low-stakes adventure where every revelation was deeply obvious if you applied any level of thought to it? Remember when Jodie showed up cosplaying as the front cover of the first Tasmin Archer album? Good times one and all. Enjoy them again and again with this commemorative unseasonal mess from Joe and Chris. http://tinyurl.com/ehpodcast eleventhhourpodcast@gmail.com

Our Undynamic duo celebrate their eventual march into adulthood with a rather low-key affair. They discuss their mutual sexual desire, what a biscuit must do to avoid cake tax, accident-prone elevator frequenters, their mutual sexual desire, Tasmin Archer, double-barrel penii, their mutual sexual desire, JC Chasez, their technical idiocy, Aaron's love of deepthroat and the side-effects thereof, Vampirella, and at least a dozen unrelated subjects. Joel Moss and JC Chasez provide some much-needed musical interludes.
