Ep 42 - Growing Your Business, The Reality Edit

Business Your Way

There's some deep wisdom coming from Christi Cooper. I ask her what her 3 tips for new service-based business owners are, and she gives me these three gems: Don't give up. We all have low months, downtimes, bad days. Business gurus promise fast growth, but that's not usually how things work. In the real world, things take time and it's a more sustainable way of growing. Don't be afraid to try and fail. That's how you grow and learn. Take care of yourself. Don't give up your whole life for your business. Family and friends are important. If you ask me, Christi is spot on. Business gurus spoon-feed us this overly simplified idea that growing a business is as fast and easy as a Tesla in Ludicrous Mode. But not only does that experience take you on a crazy ride that makes you scream in terror (ask me how I know), the likelihood of crashing at some stage is very real. SO, what does it REALLY look like when you grow your business from scratch? Christi Cooper generously shares her story. One where we can learn so much more from than from the hyped-up guru stories. Because that's what they are... STORIES. Christi Cooper is the designer and owner of Cooper Heart Creative. What started out as a side-hustle developed into a solid and successful business based on quality work, a top-notch client experience, and streamlined systems and processes. Did it happen overnight? Heck no! But then again, all good things take time! Show #878   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 28th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA, THE FBI AND $1M HACK ATTACK "Earlier this week, the FBI arrested a 27-year-old Russian citizen for attempting to carry out a ransomware attack against a US company. It turns out that company was Tesla" says Autoblog: "Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov traveled to the U.S. and contacted a Russian speaking, non-U.S. citizen who was working at the Tesla Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. After meeting with that individual, Kriuchkov allegedly proposed a deal. He would pay the employee $1 million to deliver malware to computer systems at the Gigafactory. Kriuchkov and his associates allegedly planned to extract data from the network and threaten to make it public if Tesla didn’t pay a ransom."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/08/29/tesla-fbi-ransomware-attack-nevada-gigafactory/   LUCID TEASES POSSIBLE WORLD RECORD 1/4-MILE WITH AIR DREAM EDITION "Lucid has released a teaser for its first sedan, the Air, indicating that it may have set a new electric vehicle world record before its highly-anticipated unveiling event on September 9th." according to Joey at Teslarati: "The video did not reveal any specific time, but the quickly ticking timer that appears in the teaser goes as low as 10.48 seconds, but it is doubtful that this time is the lowest that the vehicle achieved. Lucid used the same style of video for the Air’s range unveiling, and that video only went as high as 441 miles. Lucid revealed the Air had 517 miles of range just four days later. The current world record for a quarter-mile for an electric sedan is held by the Tesla Model S, which completed a drag race in just 10.452 seconds at the Tulsa Raceway Park on May 17th, 2020. The Model S used Ludicrous Mode and the “Cheetah Stance” to record this time."   The unveiling date is 9th of the 9th. So, 9.9 seconds?   https://www.teslarati.com/lucid-teases-quarter-mile-world-record/   LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT IS SELLING ITS FLEET OF BMW I3 VEHICLES "Thereafter, BMW won a bid with LAPD to supply one hundred BMW i3s each year for three years starting in 2016. Fitted to the i3s were the base 22kWh battery pack, the Deka World interior package, and the standard 19" aluminum wheels." reports InsideEVs: "CBS Los Angeles reported some i3s that accumulated just several hundred miles making the whole proposition look more ineffective. If LAPD had around a dozen of these vehicles, the story probably would never have been brought to light, but LAPD had 200, $45,000 electric cars sitting in a parking garage collecting dust.  New Century BMW, the dealer that handled the leases initially, is currently selling them as CPO models. some are priced around $15,000, unbeatable for an under warranty, lightly-driven electric car. The only issue that one may see is that some of these i3s were sitting, presumably for prolonged periods."   https://insideevs.com/news/441238/los-angeles-police-fleet-bmw-i3-being-sold/   AMAZON ORDERS OVER 1,800 ELECTRIC VANS FROM MERCEDES "Amazon orders more than 1,800 electric transporters from Mercedes-Benz Vans. The order includes around 600 eVito and more than 1,200 eSprinter delivery vans, with Amazon expecting deliveries to begin this year. This is the largest order for electric vehicles from Mercedes transporter unit to date." according to electrive: "The internet retailer is reportedly expecting 10,000 electric delivery vans to come through Rivian, a US start-up, by 2022. The total order is for no less than 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. In Europe, Amazon has relied on established manufacturers such as Mercedes. In Munich, they use 40 StreetScooters and ten Mercedes eVito. Amazon recently added 340 charging stations and operates more than 150 electric delivery vehicles every day at its distribution centre in Essen together with a Mercedes partner."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/28/amazon-orders-over-1800-electric-vans-from-mercedes-benz/   RIMAC AUTOMOBILI WELCOMES NICO ROSBERG "Rimac Automobili has welcomed 2016 Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg to the family, as he joined the team in Croatia to customise his personal C_Two and test an advanced prototype. Nico’s announcement was captured in a video on his YouTube channel. Nico is one of just 150 people worldwide that will own a C_Two, having ordered his car in early 2019, following a viewing with the founder and CEO, Mate Rimac. Just recently, Nico visited the team – now numbering more than 700 – in Sveta Nedelja, Croatia, to decide on the bespoke configuration of his car, which will be delivered along with other customer cars in 2021."   4 liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous electric motors placed at each wheel. 400 miles range. 258 mph top speed. 0-60 mph 1.85 secs with a one foot rolout.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/08/rimac-automobili-welcomes-nico-rosberg-to-the-family-of-owners   THE FIRST 700 VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CARS LAND IN NORWAY "Volkswagen has confirmed that the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars have landed in Norway as deliveries of the important new electric vehicle are about to start. It has been in production since November of last year and they have manufactured thousands of them while they completed the vehicle’s software. The result is that they plan to start deliveries with a pretty large inventory in the coming weeks." writes electrek: "Jürgen Stackmann, VW’s head of marketing, confirmed that today by sharing footage of the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars landing in Norway, which is expected to be an important market for the electric car:"   https://electrek.co/2020/08/28/vw-id-3-electric-cars-land-norway/   PANAMA CANCELS ORDER FOR DIESEL BUSES, WILL PURCHASE 195 ELECTRIC BUSES INSTEAD "MiBus has decided to cancel an order for 160 new diesel buses and purchase electric buses from BYD instead. In total, MiBus will spend $35 million to purchase 195 medium size electric buses for use in Panama City." ays CleanTechnica: "In a telephone interview with the Panama Star, Luis Campaña, manager of MiBus, explained that the year long triual period demonstrated the value of regenerative braking and that the buses air conditioning systems were capable of managing the hot, humid environment of Panama. he MiBus representative clarified that his company originally thought of “presenting a proposal for the purchase of 35 medium or 10 meter electric buses, plus 160 diesel buses to partially replace the existing fleet,” but came to believe “it would be better to expand the framework and acquire 195 electric buses .”"   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/29/panama-cancels-order-for-diesel-buses-will-purchase-195-electric-buses-instead/   WIND AND SOLAR ARE 30-50% CHEAPER THAN THOUGHT "Electricity generated from wind and solar is 30-50% cheaper than previously thought, according to newly published UK government figures. The new estimates of the “levelised cost” of electricity, published this week by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), show that renewables are much cheaper than expected in the previous iteration of the report, published in 2016." reports Simon Evans writing for CarbonBrief: "The new report is the government’s first public admission of the dramatic reductions in renewable costs in recent years. In 2013, the UK government estimated that an offshore windfarm opening in 2025 would generate electricity for £140/MWh. By 2016, this was revised down by 24%, to £107/MWh. The latest estimate puts the cost at just £57/MWh, another 47% reduction. The new estimates include similarly dramatic reductions for onshore wind and solar, with levelised costs in 2025 now thought to be some 50% lower than expected." BEIS now expects offshore wind to become cheaper than onshore by the mid-2030s. This is primarily due to much larger turbine sizes, reaching 20 megawatts (MW) by 2040, up from 9MW today.   https://www.carbonbrief.org/wind-and-solar-are-30-50-cheaper-than-thought-admits-uk-government   You can listen to all 877 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)               PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)  PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #795   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 31st May 2020. 2024 BMW M5 RUMOURED TO GO ELECTRIC AND OFFER BUGATTI VEYRON POWER "Now that we know the full scoop on the updated BMW 5 Series, which was finally revealed and shown to the public just a few days ago, enthusiasts are still waiting on the performance version of BMWs seventh-generation midsize saloon, the BMW M5. While it was teased on Instagram by Markus Falsch himself with a reveal supposedly to come in the following weeks, the future of the M5 seems to be electrified." Reports Motor1.com: "According to a source that Car Magazine stumbled upon, expect the next-generation M5 to be packing serious power via electric motors.  Internal documents and some guesswork say that the PHEV will be using the same engine in the upcoming X8 M; a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with an electric motor that has a combined output of 750 bhp. The M5 full-electric will be powered by Gen V pouch-type batteries, with Car Magazine noting that they could switch to Tesla-style round cells for stability, safety, and added performance. The energy cell is supposedly rated at 135kWh and can be hooked up to a 400V charger that can accommodate up to 350kW. It is also likely that BMW will upgrade to an 800V charger like the one by Porsche and the Taycan. With a maximum projected WLTP range of 435 miles, total power is suggested at 1006 bhp in total with a 0-62mph of just 2.9 seconds."   350kW on a 400v battery would be something around 875 amps - I don't believe it.   https://sg.news.yahoo.com/2024-bmw-m5-rumoured-electric-163000021.html   CUMULATIVE NUMBER OF NIO POWER BATTERY SWAPS REACHES 500,000 "On May 25, NIO reached a milestone of 500,000 cumulative EV battery swaps in China by its ES6 and ES8 cars. The first NIO Power battery swap station was opened on May 20, 2018 so it’s basically two years. For comparison, the number of cumulative NIO car sales are over 38,900." Says Highway Tale: "Over those two years, NIO installed a total of 131 stations (as of May 20) in 58 cities and plans to add some 50 more in 2020 to enhance long-distance travel. Not all of the close to 40,000 NIO drivers are using battery swap – some did not need to use it, while others might be in areas without battery swap stations. According to data from March, 48.7% of all cars sold at least once used the station. All NIO vehicles are enabled to use the swap stations and the station offers both pack capacities – 70 kWh and 84 kWh. Soon there will be also a 100 kWh pack option. NIO is also developing and 2nd generation of battery swap stations, which will not require the vehicles to be lifted up. It should be simpler, more reliable and cheaper, as well as save time for users. NIO encourages its customers to schedule the battery swapping, so you are assured of a set time, and won’t have to wait for other cars that may have arrived before you.   https://highwaytale.com/car-reviews/cumulative-number-of-nio-power-battery-swaps-reaches-500000-2/   RENAULT COULD MAKE ALPINE GO ELECTRIC-ONLY TO SAVE THE BRAND: REPORT "It was distressing to hear that Renault’s Dieppe plant, home to sportscar sub-brand Alpine, will likely be closed as the french Automaker attempts to right itself after the impact of the pandemic on business. We thought that closure would once again be the end of Alpine, but apparently there’s still hope." Reports Jalopnik: "According to a report from Autocar, Alpine may actually survive the tumult despite some initial reports to the contrary, but when it emerges it could be looking at an all-electric future. It’s not totally set in stone yet, though. Autocar explains that the brand’s fate will only be decided once new Renault CEO Luca di Meo begins his tenure in July. Total electrification will certainly a price to pay for a sports car brand that has long traded on simplicity and low curb weight, but I think it’ll be worth it. lpine needs to sell more cars than it currently does. The benchmark goal of 6000 units per year that Renault set for the brand three years ago has been impossible to reach thus far with fewer than 4500 units moved last year. Renault has proven that the company is serious about making electric cars work, even if unorthodox approaches might be necessary to get there. On the other side of things, it’s clear that electric sports cars can work too. Between Tesla’s Ludicrous Mode, Volkswagen’s i.D. R racecar, and plenty of other examples, the prospects for electric sports cars are really good."   https://jalopnik.com/renault-could-make-alpine-go-electric-only-to-save-the-1843794070   GERMAN MINISTRY PROPOSES €5 BILLION CAR BONUS SCHEME "Germany's Ministry of Economics has proposed a 5 billion euro (£4.5 billion) buyer bonus scheme as part of an impending stimulus package in an effort to boost car sales, two people close to the matter said on Sunday." According to Yahoo! News: "The heads of the co-governing Social Democrats (SPD) and Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) are expected to present the overall stimulus package on Tuesday, which could total up to 80 billion euros, according to one media report.  The economy ministry's proposal is for purchase premiums to be paid to buyers of electric vehicles and conventionally powered cars worth less than 77,350 euros each, with the scheme expiring at the end of the year, the sources said. The economy ministry's plans foresee a basic premium of 2,500 euros per car, which would be topped up by 500 euros for fuel-efficient vehicles. Existing incentive programmes would be increased by 1,500 euros for electric cars and 750 euros for hybrids. A slew of policymakers and industry groups have spoken out against premiums for car purchases, arguing that the stimulus programme should adhere to climate-change policies and not favour a single industry."   https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/german-ministry-proposes-5-billion-172933074.html   QOTW ANSWERS   PODBEAN LISTENER! Ordered the Tesla cyber truck but I haven't got a clue what I'm gonna do with it living in suburban Chislehurst going to be fairly large!   HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH via PATREON I realize you live in a country that does not have a pickup truck culture. I grew up in the western part of the United States where pickup trucks were pretty much a necessity. For example, we did not have a paved road for many years. There are still some locations where the road surfaces still need to be regularly grated and tire ruts need to be filled in with gravel. It is from those experiences that truck were outfitted with gear to handle all challenges. All trucks needed protected storage, extended range, spare tires, a heavy lift jack, all terrain tires, camping equipment, and comfortable bench seats. I had dreamed of an all electric pickup from Ford for years...until I saw the Rivian. Then I saw the price tag and went back into dreaming mode. My current pickup truck of choice is the Tesla Cybertruck. It has everything I want plus it wins top trumps against most sports cars. Also, I have a reservation for one. It is going to work great with our off grid travel trailer.   RAJEEV NARAYAN The ideal specs of an electric pickup truck are those that would entice these truck buyers who are largely EVs naïve. Currently, the top selling trucks in America is the Ford F -series. Chief among them is the F-150. The Ford F-150 XL starts at $28,700 which is too cheap right now for an EV to compete with, but on the higher end- the Lariat and King Ranch sell for $45K to upwards of $60K. An electric Pickup truck with aggressive styling, similar price, all wheel drive, a Range of around 450 miles and a 0-60 of 5 seconds or less with a towing capacity of around 10,000 lbs, will do well.   DAVID NYE Great range, and charging network. Great towing capacity (to tow my 3 tonne caravan with ease). Great technology including autopilot capabilities. Great comfort for at least four or five people. Great safety, including both primary AND secondary safety. Great “toughness”, including being able to cop door dings in the carpark (and maybe even sledgehammer blows:-) without significant damage. Cutting edge design. Reasonable affordability.   NIGEL BAKER It should have a lift-gate fitted as standard so it can fulfill its description.   MARTY YOUNG Regarding desired specs for an electric pickup truck, it all boils down to one thing...range...lots and lots of range...more range than may seem reasonable at first glance!  Why?  Because many people buy a pickup truck for one reason - to tow things: boats, campers, and trailers of all types. And towing even a medium-sized camper will reduce your range by at least half!  So for an EV pickup to be taken seriously by typical truck buyers, it will need a listed range of at least 500 or 600 miles so it can reliably travel a couple hundred miles between charges while towing.   AJ TARQUINO How about Tesla offering the option of a small refrigerator to their cyber truck and installing a permanent one in the back or in the frunk ?? This would be grand and I, for one, would want one... Think of the advantage of buying groceries that need to stay cold or frozen on the drive back home.  This would make a huge convince of not having to say “I have to hurry and get home, I have ice cream that I don’t want to melt !!”  What about using one for camping or overnight stays !! Their 110/220 volts are already there, making it simple to add a unit to keep a cold beverage available and not have to depend on the use of a cooler or the use melting ice.  I hate the sound of the word ‘ice’ because the same letters represents inefficient gobbling fossil fuel automobiles as I ‘am’ a promoter of electric vehicles.   JASON HARPER I’m trying as hard as I can to convince my wife to plan for a Cybertruck versus a Model Y for our next vehicle. My reasoning is it’s the same price, but has many more uses.  It seats the same number of people, it has more storage, it has open air storage for transporting furniture, we can go camping with it, we can tow a trailer with it if needed, etc. etc. Plus, I kinda like turning heads when I drive (I currently drive a BMW i3, which is a rare site in Tennessee.)   QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Critics say EVs are on the for the rich, so what do you view as ‘affordable’ prices?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 227 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #763   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 29thApril 2020. VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPIED IN 'COUPE' FORM Autoblog  says: "a fan of one of our spy photographers happened upon an ID.4 prototype and shared them with said photographer and us. It shows that the crossover will be getting a low-roof "coupe" variant. It was thinly disguised, too, with the most elaborate camouflage being some amusingly fake tail pipes."The crossover has a similar size and proportion to the ID.4 prototypes we've seen at shows and in testing. It shares the same curvy bodywork, too. But the roof slopes downward from about the back of the rear doors all the way to the tail to give it the fastback roof that has proven so popular among luxury crossover buyers. It looks like rear headroom may not be particularly reduced compared to some other fastback crossovers, but luggage space certainly will. This example also features a natty little wing at the tip of the hatch for some more sporty flair. The standard ID.4 is expected to have an 83-kWh battery pack good for about 250 miles of range, too. "   GTX is supposedly the electric GTI, and 4 wheel drive.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/29/vw-id4-coupe-ev-gtx-spy-shots/#slide-2228895   OPEL VIVARO-E ARRIVES THIS YEAR "Opel unveiled more details about the new Vivaro-e that arrives later this year. It comes with a 100 kW motor and two battery options that offer a WLTP range of 230 and 330 km (142 and 205 miles). While there’s no official information about the battery cells, I assume these are the same that are used in the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e." says Pedro at PushEVs: "The Opel Vivaro-e seems to be a great alternative to the veteran Nissan e-NV200, which only gets a WLTP range of 200 km (124 miles) from a 40 kWh battery. Since Carlos Ghosn left, Nissan really dropped the ball regarding electric vehicles."   From the press release:   For the “last mile” and beyond: up to 230 or 330 kilometres electric range (WLTP1) Powerful: 100 kW (136hp) electric motor with 260Nm torque Easy to use: variety of charging options, payment via “Free2Move Services” app Comfortable: check state-of-charge or programme charging times via “myOpel” app Unique: the only compact electric LCV available ex works with optional trailer hitch Safety for professionals: driver assistance systems enhance protection   https://pushevs.com/2020/04/28/opel-vivaro-e-arrives-this-year/   TESLA MODEL 3 WAS #2 BEST SELLING CAR IN EUROPE IN MARCH 2020 "Stats for the 27 European markets reveal a decrease in new passenger car registrations by 52% to 848,800 in March (and 3.04 million in Q1), which is the worst result in 38 years. In terms of the type of powertrain, electrified cars - xEVs (BEVs, PHEVs, HEVs) - expanded in March by 15% year-over-year to 147,500 and a record market share of 17.4% (compared to 7.3% a year ago). xEV expansion was possible only because of plug-ins, as hybrids actually went down by 11%. The Tesla Model 3 turned out to be the second best-selling car overall for the month of March 2020. That's the second podium for the Model 3 in Europe, after a third place in December 2019. This time, the volume was lower - above 15,000 compared to over 22,000, but as the overall market collapsed, it was possible for the Model 3 to beat all but the Volkswagen Golf."   https://insideevs.com/news/419117/tesla-model3-best-selling-europe-march-2020/   FORD FILES TRADEMARK FOR LINCOLN EGLIDE "We just received news from members on MachEClub.com, a Ford Mustang Mach-E forum, that the automaker filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. More specifically, it's for the LINCOLN eGLIDE." says Mark at InsideEVs: "Initially, people called it the Lincoln eGlide EV, but there's nothing official that points to this being the case. However, we do know that both Ford and Lincoln are ramping up their electric vehicle efforts. Sadly, though, Lincoln was supposed to have an upcoming EV project in partnership with Rivian Automotive, but that has now been canceled due to COVID-19. Some speculate that eGlide could have something to do with a vehicle suspension, an operating mode, or a component. Could it be something like a Ludicrous Mode or Launch Mode? Will Lincoln bring the world's most coddling electric SUV to market?"   https://insideevs.com/news/419062/lincoln-eglide-patent-filed/   POLESTAR 2 RECEIVES TOP MARKS IN CRASH SAFETY TESTS "Polestar announced on April 28 that its newest car underwent crash safety tests.  It is the first vehicle in the company’s lineup to feature Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) technology and front-inner-side airbags. Polestar prioritized the protection of its battery pack, noting the “crucial” task of preventing the vehicle’s power source from being punctured or damaged in a collision as well." says Teslarati: ". It also protects the battery from permanent damage. Polestar utilized a Severe Partial Offset Crash (SPOC) block to help accomplish this, which is a reflective solid aluminum barrier that his housed on the bottom edge of the vehicle’s front firewall. The SPOC block minimizes the possibility of objects coming into the passenger cabin or toward the battery pack in the event of a frontal collision. The presence of this barrier also makes up for the lack of an internal combustion engine, which usually adds a barrier for passengers in the event of a crash. Polestar announced on April 23 that the Polestar 2 was available for sale in the U.S. with a starting price of $59,900. Deliveries are expected to begin Summer 2020."   https://www.teslarati.com/polestar-2-top-marks-crash-safety/   SK INNOVATION TO SPEND $1.5B ON GEORGIA PLANTS, AS ‘CENTER’ OF WORLD EV BATTERY INDUSTRY "SK Innovation, a South Korean battery supplier for Volkswagen and Ford, said on Tuesday it will spend $727 million to build a second EV battery plant in the United States. Construction is expected to begin in July, with battery production slated to start in 2023." according to Bradley at electrek: "The company is currently building its first factory in the United States, in Georgia, with a planned investment of $903 million. That plant can output 9.8GWh factory, primarily to serve Volkswagen EV production in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A March article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said the first factory is expected to produce enough batteries to power 250,000 electric vehicles per year at full capacity. The proposed No.2 plant will be even bigger than the first one. Today’s report by Reuters said annual capacity for the second plant will be 11.7 gigawatt-hours of batteries. But the story last month in AJC reported a long term vision on a larger scale: The site can accommodate a facility to produce 50 gigawatt [hours] worth of batteries or five times the production of the project’s first two phases, a company official said."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/28/sk-innovation-to-spend-1-5b-on-georgia-plants-as-center-of-world-ev-battery-industry/   AUDI WITHDRAWS FROM DTM TO FOCUS ON FORMULA E "Audi will leave the German Touring Car series (DTM) at the end of this year and concentrate fully on Formula E. “With this energy, we’re going to drive our transformation into a provider of sporty, sustainable electric mobility forward,” says Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board at AUDI." reports electrive: "The DTM withdrawal is one of Duesmann’s first high-profile decisions the former BMW board joined the board on 1 April."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/04/28/audi-withdraws-from-dtm-to-focus-on-formula-e/   UK BLOWN AWAY AS HUGE NEW WIND FARM WILL SOON POWER 170,000 HOMES "A 50-turbine wind farm in southern Scotland will be up and running by 2023, sustainable energy firm Vattenfall confirmed this week." says EuroNews.com: "South Kyle Windfarm, near Dalmellington, is set to be the firm’s largest onshore wind farm in the United Kingdom. Once construction is complete, the turbines will be able to power approximately 170,000 UK homes, saving nearly 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. That’s the equivalent of 65,000 cars being taken off the road. The deal agreed by Vattenfall and Greencoat UK Wind will cost £320 million. While this is a substantial amount, according to renewable UK, investments such as these pay off as “onshore wind offers the most cost-effective choice for new electricity in the UK, bar none - it is cheaper than gas, nuclear, coal and other renewables.”   Fully operational by 2023.   Check out the story here: https://www.euronews.com/living/2020/04/28/uk-blown-away-as-huge-new-wind-farm-will-soon-power-170-000-homes     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   What car have you driven in your lifetime you would love to be able to convert to EV?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 233 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Niels & Sebastian

Show #407.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 6th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CONGRATULATIONS NISSAN The Nissan LEAF today became the first electric car in history to surpass 400,000 sales, solidifying the model’s leading role in the global shift toward more sustainable mobility. Introduced in 2010 as the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF has led the way in making the excitement and convenience of electric driving accessible to non-luxury buyers. Less than a decade ago, electric cars were seen as a niche product, and LEAF customers were mostly “early adopters.”   “AN ELECTRIC PORSCHE DRIVES JUST AS SPORTY AS ANY OTHER PORSCHE” Electromobility is the dominant theme of the Geneva Motor Show. At the Volkswagen Group Night, Porsche presented the Panamera Sport Turismo with hybrid drive and charging station for example.  Simon Vogt (E-Services - Sales & Operations) said: “Anyone who buys an electric or hybrid model from Porsche is offered a seamless and reliable charging experience and does not have to worry about charging. Everything is prepared. As soon as the customer wants it, the navigation system reliably guides them to a suitable charging station. There he simply inserts the plug and charges the desired range. Thanks to Plug and Charge, tiresome authentication processes are a thing of the past. Payment is also made automatically via the Porsche Charging Service. Put simply: car and charging station recognize each other as soon as the charging plug is inserted. The electricity price is also fixed, so that the amount due is simply debited from the customer's personal account. In principle, all drivers of hybrid and electric vehicles can charge via the Porsche Charging Service." And on the subject of performance he says: "With optimum drive technology and the right vehicle concept, the Porsche characteristics can be exploited even further through its electric models. For example, the center of gravity of the Taycan is lower than that of the 911, thanks to the underbody battery. Therefore, an electric Porsche is at least as sporty as a combustion engine."   $35,000 TESLA MODEL 3 LEADING TO PRICE CUTS ON CHEVY BOLT "Regardless of our previous reports that high demand is pushing up the price of the Hyundai Kona Electric at some dealerships, it appears Chevrolet dealers are taking the $35,000 Tesla Model 3 seriously and adjusting prices according."writes Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "The Chevrolet Bolt is seeing discounts as high as $7,000. One of our avid readers from the state of Oregon has been tracking 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV pricing at local dealerships." The headline price is $37,000 and of course there are federal and state level incentives too.   https://insideevs.com/35000-tesla-model-3-leading-price-cuts-chevy-bolt/   TESLA MODEL S CALLED AMERICA’S “GREATEST MUSCLE CAR” "Former Top Gear host and current The Grand Tour presenter James May recently experienced the joys and exhilaration of Ludicrous Mode, courtesy of the Tesla Model S P100D." Reports Simon for Teslarati: " May mentioned several of the vehicle’s merits in his review, such as its power, technology, and its quiet, comfortable ride. The former Top Gear host even acknowledged the vehicle as America’s next-generation muscle car. “The Tesla Model S P100D is the greatest muscle car America has ever produced — which means, it’s the greatest muscle car the world has ever produced,” May commented. May did mention that the vehicle is unique in the way that Tesla is unique, even if some of the cars’ basic characteristics such as its panels have not reached the level of refinement as entries from veteran automakers. Pointing out some of the P100D’s quirky features that are based on Elon Musk’s sense of humor such as Fart Mode, May notes that there is simply no other car like the Model S on the road today, and from an automaker that is unlike anyone else in the industry."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-p100d-james-may-review/   BOB LUTZ SAYS TESLA SHOULD AND SHOULDN'T HAVE RETAILS STORES Mark Kane at InsideEVs reports: “Bob Lutz, former GM Chairman, was interviewed a few days ago by CNBC about Tesla and he doesn’t believe that Tesla will be able to shift sales entirely online, by the way of the introduction of $35,000 Model 3 Standard battery option.” Bob Lutz said: “I always said it was totally ridiculous to own your own dealership, you own the real estate, you own the people, you own the new car inventory, you own the used car inventory – a massive misallocation of company capital. So now they’re getting out of that, they’re gonna close stores, they’re going to try to do all the sales online. I don’t see how that’s gonna work. Who’s gonna take the trade-in, who’s gonna take the used cars, who’s gonna provide service with no stores there.”   https://insideevs.com/bob-lutz-skeptical-tesla-online-sales-video/   MITSUBISHI ENGELBERG TOURER MAKES GLOBAL PREMIERE AT 2019 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Named after the famous ski resort in central region of Switzerland, best known for its panoramic views, well-groomed runs and challenging off-piste skiing and snowboarding, the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer is a Twin Motor, 4WD, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) which delivers high levels of performance in the most challenging weather conditions and on all road surfaces. It combines this with the long cruising range inherent to the PHEV, allowing journeys out of town and to places with no charging infrastructure.  The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer has an EV cruising range of over 43 miles/70 km (WLTP cycle) and with a fully charged battery and full fuel tank it has a total cruising range of over 434 miles/700 km (WLTP).   NIO SCRAPS FACTORY PLANS, ANNOUNCES $1.4 BILLION NET LOSS, STOCK FALLS "Chinese EV startup Nio has announced that it won’t be building its own manufacturing plant in Shanghai after all." Reports Phil at Electrek: "Nio released its Q4 and full 2018 financial results on Tuesday, and the company said the agreements it reached in 2017 to build its own manufacturing plant in Jia Ding, Shanghai have been terminated. Nio will continue to use its existing plant with state-owned JAC Motors to build its cars. The company says the agreement will “give it capacity and flexibility to support its market penetration and growth plans for the next two to three years.” The company reported $720 million in revenue for 2018, but it also posted a $1.4 billion net loss, nearly doubling its losses from the previous year."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/06/nio-scraps-factory-plans-announces-1-4-billion-net-loss-stock-falls/   BMW X3 XDRIVE30E HEADLINES A NEW AND OVERHAULED PHEV RANGE BMW is touting its new and improved range of plug-in hybrids at the Geneva Motor Show. At the volume end, the BMW X3 xDrive30e goes into production in December this year and puts a plug-in port on BMW's most popular crossover. It pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo gas engine with an electric motor and eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Combined output comes to 252 horsepower, which can be temporarily upped to 293 hp with a press of the XtraBoost button.” reports Autoblog: “The lithium-ion battery under the rear seat maintains the luggage volume of the conventional X3. The 6.5-second dash to 62 miles and hour puts it about 0.4 seconds behind the regular, 248-hp four-pot X3.” Reports Autoblog: “Next come upgraded, second-gen versions of the electrified 2, 3, 5, X5, and 7 Series ranges. The 330e runs up to 37 miles on electric power, a 50 percent improvement over the first-gen — but BMW didn't clarify how the 3 Series gained the extra range. As with the X3 PHEV, the 330e harnesses a combined system output of 252 hp and a temporary 41-hp squirt using XtraBoost. The batteries in the 225xe Active Tourer and 530e sedan grow in capacity without growing in size. The 225xe cell is now 9.7 kWh instead of 7.7, extending all-electric range to 29 miles. The 530e battery is rated at 12 kWh, while only taking up the same space as the previous 9-kWh battery. That improves electric range to up to 35 miles. The 530e will also be available with xDrive later this year.   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/bmw-x3-xdrive30e-phev-geneva-vv833kz9/   MERCEDES EQV ELECTRIC VAN CONCEPT DEBUTS, WILL SPAWN PRODUCTION VERSION "Fully electric vans aren't all the rage yet, but Mercedes is trying to change that with its EQV Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Mercedes promises this concept is going to spawn an extremely similar production vehicle. The specs on the concept are promising, too." Reports Autoblog: "The EQV Concept will travel 249 miles on a full charge from its 100 kWh battery pack. It's capable of charging up to 25 percent in just 15 minutes, providing 62 miles of driving. This van won't be a speed demon by any measure, as the single electric motor pushes a modest 201 horsepower to the front wheels. Top speed for the big van is 99 mph."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/mercedes-eqv-electric-van-concept-geneva-k43j5ss9/   HONDA TO FULLY ELECTRIFY Honda took to the stage at Geneva Motor Show to announce the further acceleration of its electrification ambitions. The company announced its intention to move 100 per cent of its European sales to electrified powertrains by 2025. This new ambition builds on the brand’s 2017 aim of two-thirds of its sales to be electrified by 2025, and places it firmly at the forefront of Honda’s global electrification shift announced as part of its 2030 vision.         COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 31st January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Tesla earning call note: Chinese Gigafactory 3, Model Y unveiling, Semi Truck, Solar Tiles, new Roadster, Pickup, Model S and X re-design or use of new battery cells, Supercharger v3, Model 3 demand in US vs Europe, new Autopilot hardware, insane workforce growth and cuts, Full Self Driving and of course the $35,000 Model 3.   EUROPEAN TESLA MODEL 3 CUSTOMERS RECEIVE DELIVERY DATES "Tesla Model 3 buyers in Europe are receiving delivery date estimates." says Zach at CleanTechnica who has been keeping an eye on the TMC forum: “My Tesla Model 3 Performance will be ready to collect in Madrid on the week commencing 11th Feb. 3 weeks ahead of schedule!” "Aside from the good news from Tesla, the German state of Nordrhine Westfalia, which is the most populated state in the country, today approved new electric vehicle subsidies for companies. [Commercial] Electric car buyers can now get €4,000 rebates for fully electric cars they buy, and electric truck buyers can get €8,000."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/29/breaking-european-tesla-model-3-customers-receive-delivery-dates-new-subsidies-in-nordrhine-westfalia-germany/   TESLA’S MASSIVE DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA IS COMING TO LIFE "A recent aerial video of the Lathrop building, located 60 miles east of Tesla’s Fremont factory, shows the completion of the facility’s outer shell and glass installed on parts of the building." reports Teslarati: "Part of the assumption that this building will become a parts distribution center is based on...the numerous truck-sized loading bays denote shipping activity".   Job Ad! “Tesla is looking for a motivated and experienced Supervisor for our highly dynamic parts distribution center in Lathrop, CA. This position will provide supervision of day-to-day operations including receiving, stocking, shipping and all transactions related to said activities. The Supervisor, Parts & Service Warehouse, will also ensure efficiency and accuracy of stocking and organizing parts inventory.” reads a job description for Supervisor, Parts Distribution Center.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-parts-distribution-center-lathrop-ca-video/   TESLA MODEL S AND X GET SOFTWARE LIMITED PACK "Tesla is instead going back to its old model of “software-limited battery pack” – meaning that it is only producing one battery pack for Model S and Model X, the 100 kWh pack, but it is offering two options and one of them is limiting the energy capacity accessible." reports Fred at Electrek: "The company is also moving away from using the energy capacity of its battery packs as part of its naming scheme."   All cars have dual motor AWD, premium interior and sound   Model S Price: $85,000 Range: 310-miles   Model S Extended Range Price: $93,000 (cheaper by $1,000) Range: 335-miles   Model S Performance (no Ludicrous) Price: $112,000 Range: 315-miles 0-60mph: 3.0 sec   Model S Performance (with Ludicrous) Price: $132,000 Range: 315-miles 0-60mph: 2.4 sec   If you want the Extended Range in the future you can pay for it, and they'll unlock it over the air. Ludicrous Mode also appears to be a software unlock too, so the Performance cars will have the hardware and you can opt to pay for it later.   https://electrek.co/2019/01/29/tesla-launches-new-cheaper-model-s-x-software-limited-battery-pack/   VW OPEN TO SHARING MEB EV PLATFORM WITH OTHER AUTOMAKERS "According to German paper Tagesspiegel, Volkswagen admits that the company is in talks with other manufacturers over opening its all-electric MEB platform." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said that the MEB platform could become “a standard not only for the VW Group.” First though we need to see VW actually selling MEB in volume."   https://insideevs.com/vw-share-meb-ev-platform-other-automakers/   KIA REVEALS DETAILS ON NIRO EV LAUNCH An InsideEVs Exclusive on this one for the Kia eNiro: "The first vehicles will arrive in the US in late February. The car will be sold in 12 states: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington." Steve Kosowski, the manager of long-range strategy and planning at for Kia Motors America told InsideEVs: "volume is globally constrained because Kia Motors America can’t get the desired allocation from the parent company. “The truth is that demand in other markets around the world is so strong,” he said. Kosowski explained that regulatory pressures, especially in Europe, dictate that countries such as Norway are a higher priority than the United States. “We have this conversation all the time with our leadership about how we need more cars.” And some insight on battery supplier, which I had read as speculation before, but this seems firm confirmation: The all-electric Niro, Kona, and Soul share the same electric powertrain, with some slight modifications in the Niro’s transmission to handle the extra mass. SK Innovation provides the cells for Kia’s battery pack while LG Chem is Hyundai’s supplier."   https://insideevs.com/details-kia-niro-ev-launch/   EV TARIFF COSTS ARE ‘UNCLEAR TO CUSTOMERS’ "Research from Citizens Advice has found that a lack of clear information is making it difficult for electric vehicle (EV) drivers to work out the best electricity tariff to choose to charge their vehicles." reports Utility Week: "It found ten out of the 72 active domestic energy suppliers offer an EV tariff, with the number of such tariffs increasing from two in August 2017 to ten in September last year. Half of the tariffs analysed in the report offer a discount on a home charger or public charge points, however the value of this discount can vary. Interestingly the research highlights that EV-specific tariffs do not necessarily offer the best rates for EV users." In response to the report Fiona Howarth, chief executive of Octopus Electric Vehicles which provides the Octopus Energy Go tariff, said: “This report demonstrates that time of use tariffs are great for EV drivers, and we need to see more of this sort of innovation.   https://utilityweek.co.uk/ev-tariff-costs-unclear-customers/   2019 NISSAN LEAF PLUS GETS LONGER RANGE IN CHEAPEST TRIM "New California regulatory compliance documents hint that lower trim levels of the upcoming 2019 Nissan Leaf Plus will be the ones with the longest range." says Green Car Reports: "To get the maximum range of 226 miles that Nissan estimates, buyers will likely have to stick to the base S trim level, according to documents, based on California emissions tests and obtained by Automotive News. Higher-trim SL and SV models are likely to have shorter range estimates, which Nissan estimates at 215 miles. In the tests, the base 62-kwh Leaf Plus went 364 miles on the EPA's notoriously gentle Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule. On the California UDDS test, the Leaf SV Plus and SL Plus returned 330 miles. It's unclear why there's such a discrepancy between the Leaf S Plus and higher trims. Nissan specs show the SV and the SL weigh about 75 pounds more than the base S."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121208_2019-nissan-leaf-plus-gets-longer-range-in-cheapest-trim   RENAULT ZOE S EDITION NOW AVAILABLE IN THE UK Renault has introduced a new version at the top of the Renault ZOE range. The new Renault ZOE S Edition replaces the previous Signature Nav version and brings a host of equipment at a small premium over the Renault ZOE Dynamique Nav. EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Saturday 12th May 2018. TESLA WILL ENABLE ORDERS FOR NEW MODEL 3 VERSIONS NEXT WEEK I love it when Elon tweets because you never know what he's promising but, despite critics saying he lives on Elon time (which reminds me of Steve Jobs' Reality Distortion Field) it always happens. Sometimes not on the timescale Elon says, but it always happens. Well mostly, he has made predictions in the past with things like EV's having 600 mile ranges, was that 2018 he said that would happen? We'll forgive him the odd moonshot. However he has said within a week Tesla will open orders for the dual motor and performance versions. As you may know, things like photographs were seen with a Model 3 on a test track recently which sported red brake calipers, a giveaway it was testing a performance version. But then again, I'm aware that 2+2 can equal 5, and then i look stupid. And frankly I don't need Tesla's help to make me look stupid, i can do that on my own thanks. Musk has hinted that that version will come with Tesla's Ludicrous mode option, which can significantly boost the vehicle's acceleration. Production of those options is due to start in July. And we still don't know the exact specs. However my favourite part of this is that the answer came via a question from DMC Ryan. He hosts his weekly Ride The Lightning Tesla podcast, which i'm a huge fan on. And for a while now he's been talking about how to get this question answered. So, Ryan's strategy has been this: wait until Elon tweets because that means he's online and then BAM hit him with dual motor/performance/air suspension question. I seen Elon tweet and then BAM there goes Ryan with his question, but thus far, no luck. That has happened a few times now but this time, Elon saw it and BAM...he replied. Ryan, I salute you. Persistence pays off. Oh and talking air suspension, that's next year says Elon. Along with the white seats and interior. CHINA EV SALES DOUBLE "Monthly figures from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers released Friday show that passenger cars sales in April rose 11 percent over a year earlier to 1.9 million vehicles, outpacing a 3.5 percent growth rate in March" reports ABC: "Sales of "new-energy vehicles" such as electric cars and gasoline-electric hybrids more than doubled to 82,000."  TESLA FILES 3,661 MODEL 3 VINS Earlier this week we heard Tesla had registered 5,000 new VINs and now they're back to grab over 3,500 more. All for the Model 3 by the way, which brings the total to a total of 42,942 VINs. That's almost one tenth of the total reservations they had. That's 8,000 registered in the last week and, although not a foolproof system, does point towards a production rate of 4,000 per week. Perhaps slightly less. Remember Elon recently promised another shutdown to upgrade equipment which unlocks 5-6,000 per week. That starts to make sense because Elon also said the dual motor option would only come once that rate was achieved, and which most people expected to be July. TWO MORE HYUNDAI KONA REVIEWS Another embargo must have been lifted because two reviews of the Hyundai Kona were published at the same time. Auto Express highlights include: "Neither the new Nissan Leaf or the VW e-Golf can get anywhere close. DC charging at up to 100kW is standard. Hyundai UK is being coy on pricing and range details, beyond confirming that both battery sizes will be available to British buyers. The electric powertrain is smooth and quiet, and despite the car’s weight (this edition weighs almost 1.7 tonnes), there’s all the performance you could really need up to around 65mph. The car offers four levels of energy recuperation, selected via paddles behind the steering wheel. Hyundai said our vehicle’s software needed more tuning...And learn to rely on levels three and four of recuperation to bring your speed down the majority of the time. And here’s a bit of even more significant news: the claimed range of 482km, under the forthcoming, supposedly more realistic WLTP test regime, seems very achievable, based on our time with the car. Under a mixture of hard acceleration for cornering pictures, urban crawl and 65mph motorway cruising, we saw energy consumption of around 12kWh per 100km" So that's one review, and onto AutoCar who also had great words to say about it "The Kona Electric’s performance level feels strong – although, due to its weight, perhaps not as strong as its headline power and torque lead you to expect. Hyundai quotes a 0-62mph showing of 7.6sec — which beats any comparable rival save for BMW’s i3. And for those primarily interested in whether the car’s battery range is really as good as Hyundai claims, there’s encouraging news. Our test route included town, motorway and mountain roads, and intensive driving as well as touring. While the car’s indicated average energy efficiency, tested over extended distances, was as high as 7.0kWh per 100km and as low as 16kWh at times, our overall experience suggested that you could easily average the 12kWh per 100km necessary to make good on Hyundai’s 300-mile real-world range on a mix of urban and extra-urban roads. At times, you could even improve on it."   KIA ELECTRIFIED CAR SALES IN EUROPE INCREASED TO 10% (4% PLUG-INS) IN Q1 Onto Hyundai's South Korean sister company Kia in Europe. They say: "“Kia’s registrations of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles rose 36.2% to 13,070 units. In Q1 2018, 10% of all Kia cars sold in Europe were powered by an electrified powertrain, compared to 7.7% over the same period in 2017. Kia recently announced plans to introduce 16 new advanced powertrain vehicles by 2025 – the first of these new alternatively-fuelled vehicles will be unveiled later in 2018"   TESLA GETS SHUT DOWN IN CONNECTICUT This story i find baffling, like all stories about whether Tesla is allowed to sell cars. You see, from here in the UK, we view the USA as the home of capitalism in all it's glory and horror. If you really do buy into the American dream whereby you can start from nothing and make yourself, this is one piece of protectionism the Chinese would be proud of. Fred at Electrek says: "For four years in a row now, Tesla has been trying to enter Connecticut, one of the few states that still prevent Tesla from selling its vehicles directly to consumers."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.

## Onze website Is nu live!
