Summary: Bird names are changing in 2024. Join Kiersten and Cheryl as they talk about a controversial decision made about bird names. For our hearing-impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean. Show Notes: “American Ornithological Society Will Change the English Names of Bird Species Named After People,” AOS Leadrership, https://americanornithology.org “These American birds and dozens more will be renamed, to remove human monikers,” by Nell Greenfield-Boyce. NPR Morning Edition, November 1, 2023. https://www.npr.org Transcript Kiersten: Intro: Quoting the bard, William Shakespeare “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” I hope all you birders out there believe this quote to be true, because some changes are a'comin where common bird names are concerned. The American Ornithological Society has decided to change the English names of bird species named after people. Cheryl: In November of 2023 the AOS announced that birds named after people would be renamed. Birds such as Anna's Hummingbird, Bullock's Oriole, Abert's Towhee, Gambel's Quail and Bewick's Wren will all be renamed. Scientists will form a multi-disciplinary committee that will seek public input when they begin renaming the birds. They will focus on birds that are in the AOS's jurisdiction which is the United States and Canada. Beginning in 2024, they will start with 70 to 80 species. Kiersten: Why are they doing this? Quoting Dr. Collen Handel, president of the American Ornithological Society and a research wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska, “There is power in a name, and some English bird names have associations with the past that continue to be exclusionary and harmful today. We need a much more inclusive and engaging scientific process that focusses attention on the unique features and beauty of the birds themselves.” For example, in 2020 McGown's Longspur, a small prairie songbird from the Great Plains, was renamed to the thick-billed Longspur. This name focuses on the characteristics of the bird instead of using the birds to honor a human being. I like this thought process. This is what the scientists are going to do with all those names. Cheryl: By doing this, the AOS is admitting that the previous process for naming birds comtained some bias. There are three guidelines they will be using for the renaming process and for future newly discovered bird species. The AOS commits to changing all English-language names of birds within its geographic jurisdiction that are named directly after people, along with other names deemed offensive and exclusionary, focusing first on those species that occur primarily within the U.S. or Canada. Kiersten: The second guideline: The AOS commits to establishing a new committee to oversee the assignment of all English common names for species within the AOS's jurisdiction: this committee will broaden participation by including a diverse representation of individuals with expertise in the social sciences, communications, ornithology, and taxonomy. Within the scientific community, AOS will include a broader representation of scientists this go around, instead of just a bunch of old white guys. Cheryl: The third guideline: The AOS commits to actively involving the public in the process of selecting new English bird names. So, instead of just involving scientists on the naming process, the AOS will reach out to the communities where these birds are found as ask for comments and suggestions. Kiersten: Quoting Dr. Judith Scarl, AOS Executive Director and CEO, “As scientists, we work to eliminate bias in science. But there has been historic bias in how birds are named, and who might have a bird named in their honor. Exclusionary naming conventions developed in the 1800s, clouded by racism and misogyny, don't work for us today, and the time has come for us to transform this process and redirect the focus to the birds, where it belongs.” Cheryl: We know that there will be a lot of push back from birders who have been birding for many years, but this is a necessary step to opening up birding to everyone. Because birding is for everyone. Ken Kaufman, author of many widely used bird ID guides, weighed in on this decision in a recent NPR article. He's been using these names for the last 60 years and was initially upset by the decision because he knows some of the people these birds are named after, but he's come around to the idea. He was quoted as saying, “It's an exciting opportunity to give these birds names that celebrate them, rather than some person in the past.” Kiersten: I think Ken's quote about sums it up. Remember that the only thing changing here is the name of the bird, they are still as beautiful and as fun to watch regardless of what call them.

A new community space may be on the horizon! On today's episode, Megan McGown and Leland Poppe, co-chairs of the Wellness and Recreation Alliance join us to discuss the new recreation center project. This project has been in the works for over 20 years and their vision for the new recreation center is coming straight from the community: a larger building, a walking track, a larger swimming pool, and much more. The current multi-use gym will stay but they hope to adjust the swimming pool, with an added addition above for a figure 8 track on the second floor. They are also aware of the sentimental value of the current building, including its dome feature. In creating the new recreation center, they hope to incorporate the natural light and some similar features in the new building and its additions. The Wellness and Recreation Alliance hopes we'll see funding for the new recreation improvements on our November ballots. In the meantime, you can get involved in this project when the mayor calls a work session in July. The city council will discuss ideas and implementations for this project and then they will decide whether it goes to the ballots in November. If you're excited about this project, now is the time to contact your city council representatives and let them know you want to see this project on your ballots!Join us today as we get into these topics: · How the Alliance is implementing public opinion into the new recreation center · Proposed sales tax increase to pay for the improvements· What happens if the initiative doesn't pass in November? · Updates on banking apps and more banking informationLearn more about the project and keep up with updates here: https://www.facebook.com/NPParksRecWellness Timestamps:0:47 – It's a busy time of the year! 2:10 - Welcome Megan and Leland 3:08 – What's the vision for the rec center?6:06 – A part of a growing North Platte 7:44 – Displacing skate park 8:55 – Upgrading the facility now 10:20 – How much of the current building will still?11:24 – Elevation in the figure 8 track 12:05 – Incorporating the dome in the new building13:10 – What are the next steps?14:33 – Voting for funding in November 15:33 – Start getting involved! 16:10 – Watch the city council meeting 17:51 – How we manage the facility 19:52 – Donations compared to YMCA 22:02 – Why did you pick this size?24:21 – What happens if it doesn't pass?26:12 – What does the ½ cent sales increase mean?28:10 – Changes in our bank app 31:57 – This is a community effort 33:52 – It's time for something different 35:32 – Trivia: Baseball trivia! So you listened to episode 58 and you’re convinced of the benefits of outdoor play (https://yourparentingmojo.com/outdoor/) . But you’re a grown-up. You don’t play outdoors. And you don’t know anything about nature. How can you possibly get started in helping your child to play outdoors more? There are a number of books out there on getting outside with children – some arguably more well-known than this one, but I have to say that Dr. Scott Sampson’s book How to Raise a Wild Child is the BEST book I’ve seen on this topic because it balances just the right amount of information on why it’s important to get outside, with just enough pointers on how to do it, without overwhelming you with hundreds of options to choose between. And it turns out that you don’t need to know a thing at all about The Environment to have a successful outing with children! If you’ve been wishing you could get outdoors more but just don’t know where to start, then this episode – and book! – are for you. For those of you who get my fortnightly newsletter, which you can receive by subscribing to the show YourParentingMojo.com, you know that I have a bit of a penchant for the outdoors. I went on a 10 day backpacking trip across North Cascades National Park in September, and I’m trying to pass on my love of the outdoors to my daughter, most of our newsletters have a photo at the top and pretty often they go out with an image of her sitting in a stream or clambering over boulders or up to her thighs and a pond wearing waders, of course. And so today we’re going to talk with Dr Scott Sampson, the author of how to raise a wild child, the art and science of falling in love with nature, which I have to say is the best book I’ve read on this topic in terms of balancing information about the science of children in nature with a not overwhelming number of actions that parents can take to raise a wild child. Dr Sampson has the honor of being the first paleontologist we’ve interviewed on this show. He earned both his master’s in anthropology and a phd in zoology from the University of Toronto. He’s currently the president and CEO of Science World British Columbia, which is a pretty cool hands on science museum in Vancouver. And if his name sounds familiar to the parents of preschoolers, it’s because he also hosts the PBS kids series dinosaur train. I’m so excited to discuss this topic that’s so close to my heart. Welcome Dr Sampson. "death isn't a sentence, It's an escape" Timothy McVeigh Thank you for listening to Public Access America. we have a small group here that makes up a slightly diverse but always curious demographic.Watching the news gives a starting point at times but we never know how far or what direction the information will take us. Jason i know some will see this all as a dividing point in America. Perspectives will cloud your judgement, and reason sides with the isolated mind. My hope is that you don't see this from the radical point of view but from the point of view that Timothy Mcveigh wanted you to see it, believe it or not, the same way our government wants you to see it. i would like us to reflect on this from the victims points of view. from Ruby Ridge to waco to oklahoma city, the way i see it is that everyone involved in every aspect was a victim. i can't believe that an agent being a human wants to kill anymore then the killed wanted to be attacked, The bombing victims were no more involved in Ruby Ridge or Waco then McVeigh. Tim hated bullies. i hate bullies too. So how are any of us different. Initially, the FBI had three hypotheses regarding who might have been responsible for the bombing. The first was international terrorists, possibly the same group that had carried out the World Trade Center bombing two years earlier. The FBI also thought that a drug cartel might have been carrying out an act of vengeance against DEA agents as the building held a DEA office. The last hypothesis was that the bombing was done by anti-government right-wing radicals attempting to start a rebellion against the federal government. McVeigh was arrested within 90 minutes of the explosion, as he was traveling north on Interstate 35 near Perry in Noble County, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State Trooper Charlie Hanger stopped McVeigh for driving his yellow 1977 Mercury Marquis without a license plate, and arrested him for having a concealed weapon. For his home address, McVeigh falsely claimed he resided at Terry Nichols' brother James' house in Michigan. After booking McVeigh into jail, Hanger searched his police car and found a business card McVeigh had hidden while he was handcuffed. Written on the back of the card, which was from a Wisconsin military surplus store, were the words "TNT at $5 a stick. Need more." The card was later used as evidence during McVeigh's trial. While investigating the VIN from an axle of the truck used in the explosion and the remnants of the license plate, federal agents were able to link the truck to a specific Ryder rental agency in Junction City, Kansas. Using a sketch created with the assistance of Eldon Elliot, owner of the agency, the agents were able to implicate McVeigh in the bombing. McVeigh was also identified by Lea McGown of the Dreamland Motel, who remembered him parking a large yellow Ryder truck in the lot; McVeigh had signed in under his real name at the motel, using an address that matched the one on his forged license and the charge sheet at the Perry Police Station. Before signing his real name at the motel, McVeigh had used false names for his transactions. However, McGown noted, "People are so used to signing their own name that when they go to sign a phony name, they almost always go to write, and then look up for a moment as if to remember the new name they want to use. That's what McVeigh did, and when he looked up I started talking to him, and it threw him."
