One day, Chris was on the search for a very rare animal: a single wolf that had made it to the western side of the North Cascade mountains. That day, to his amazement, he found a set of fresh tracks on a sandy riverbed. Wolves had been extinct here in Washington state for nearly a hundred years, so the find was incredible.   These mythical creatures are very slowly returning to the North Cascades. It's a sign of hope for both Jason Ransom, a biologist at the National Park, and Scott Schuyler from the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe. But it's taken a lot to get to this point, and there's still a long way to go before this place is truly healed. On his journey searching for this lone wolf, Chris asks the question: will the wildlife and human ecosystem make space for them as they trickle back? The image pictured is the first wolf track Chris found on the west side of the North Cascades that triggered the story told in this episode. This show would not be possible without listener support. In episode 94 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we discuss the importance of proper food storage when hiking and camping in bear country. If you haven't had a chance to listen yet, I recommend going back and tuning into episode 85, where I interview a wildlife biologist specializing in bears from Glacier National Park. He shares some great tips on safely recreating around bears and avoiding an encounter altogether. So, to build on that topic and focus on one of the primary ways bears and humans collide, I was excited to interview Holly Jalenski, the co-founder of Grub Can, about how she and her husband created a bear-safe food canister that's comfortable to carry. You'll hear us chat about what inspired them to design a new bear canister, how they're tested, and if they actually work when a bear gets their hands on them. Holly Jaleski and Jim Corning are a husband and wife backpacking duo. They've both been backpacking all over the US for over 40 years. They created Grubcan out of a desire for a bear-resistant container that fits comfortably inside or outside backpacks and opens easily without tools. Grubcan's are handmade in Flagstaff (and we love visitors!). Holly is the CCO at Grubcan. She is trained in wildlife rehabilitation and is the Director of a rescue ranch. Her parents instilled in her a respect and love for nature from an early age. She has been on the BLM Resource Advisory Council for many years as an advocate for preserving nature for the good of all. She is also a novelist and writes environmental fiction. Jim is an Aeronautical Engineer and has been designing and manufacturing airplane parts out of carbon fiber for 26 years; now, he's used his expertise to transform the bear-resistant container market. A trip to Stehekin, tucked away in a valley in the North Cascades National Park complex, feels like a visit to an island. But instead of being completely surrounded by water, this remote village is hemmed in by spectacular alpine backcountry, making it impossible for cars or trucks to drive into or out of town.   Once frequented only by Native Americans on their trek through the mountains, this peaceful valley has been the site of sparse but consistent settlement since the late 19th century. With the National Park Service protecting the pristine area surrounding the few parcels of private land, the area feels like a land time forgot.   In this episode, we talk about our recent visit to Stehekin, what we did, where we stayed, and a bit of history about this unique area. 58-year-old Ritchie Collins went missing in early 2019. The exact date of his disappearance is unknown. A neighbor reported seeing Ritchie at his home in Bellingham, WA, but that exact date is fuzzy. However, he had not texted or spoken to friends or family members since March of 2019. Ritchie has been described by those who knew him best as a loner, so it would not be uncommon for a few days or even weeks to go by without hearing from him. Ritchie's family had been trying to get ahold of him for weeks. Then on April 30, 2019, Ritchie's car was found parked at the Colonial Creek Campground at North Cascades National Park. The keys to his car had been placed on top of the vehicle. According to a park ranger, the vehicle had been there for weeks. We first brought you Ritchie's story in March of 2020. How do you feel when someone starts talking about bats? Warm and fuzzy? Uneasy? Disgusted? Cautiously curious? In the fourth episode of the Highland Wonders Podcast, The Secret Life of Bats, Roger Christophersen of the North Cascades National Park addresses our ideas about bats, and sparks a sense of wonder at these flying, fuzzy, leathery insectivores. To learn more about bats, how and where they live, and how we all can support bat populations (and why we should), check out the Highland Wonders Podcast wherever you normally get your podcasts! And now, a story from our intrepid Nature Detective. Enjoy! Jack, Nature Detective: season 1, episode 4: The Secret Life of Bats Jack's family is enjoying a weekend camping in the highlands, escaping the heat of summer for a few days, and exploring the forests and lakes of the Okanogan. As they sit around the campfire, they notice something winging through the air in the little clearing, fluttering here and there. It's flight pattern seems different from a bird, and the creature itself is bigger than the insects that Jack normally sees. “Eek! It's a bat!” Jack's mom exclaims. Jack gazes into the fire, thinking. “What are bats, anyway?” Jack thinks about what he knows about bats, trying to sort them into a group with other animals he knows. Recently, he had a chance to get a close-up look at a bat during the day, as it clung to his house, sleeping. It was definitely fuzzy, with a pointy little snout. “I don't think they are birds because they don't lay eggs. If they DID lay eggs, how would that even work? They hang upside down, and don't have nests. The eggs would just crack on the ground! That would be bad.” “Are they insects? Some insects are furry, like bumble bees. Maybe bats are insects?” Jack is not sure. He thinks, “Bees and other bugs don't take very good care of their babies. But I heard that bat moms carry their babies around and feed them.” Jack glances over at his mom, who is giving his little sister a piggy back over to their tent. “Maybe bats are more like people. Mammals. Mammals?!? FLYING MAMMALS?!?! Is that possible?” When they get home, Jack asks his mom to look up pictures of bats on the internet. One image of a bat skeleton pops up and Jack notices that the wing looks a lot like a hand - it even has a little thumb! He also notices their ears, “My what big ears you have, little bat!” Jack cackles at his own Little Red Riding Hood reference. So far, the evidence points to bats being mammals. But Jack still has a lot of questions. “Do bats have predators? Why do bats have big ears? Do they hibernate in the winter or go south like birds do? How high can they fly? I can't wait to learn more!” Luckily, Roger Chistophersen, of the North Cascades National Park has the answers to some of Jack's questions in the most recent, very fascinating, Highland Wonders Podcast!

However, he had not texted anyone since March of 2019. Ritchie has been described by those who knew him best as a loner, so it would not be uncommon for a few days or even weeks to go by without hearing from him. Ritchie’s family had been trying to get ahold of him for weeks but then on April 30th, Ritchie’s car was found parked at the Colonial Creek Campground at North Cascades National Park. The keys to his car were on top of the vehicle. According to a park ranger, the vehicle had been there for weeks. The park where Ritchie’s car was located is filled with trails that stretch for seemingly endless miles. So far, after extensive searches, no sign of Ritchie has been found. Description: Becky Lomax is the author of The Moon Guidebook USA National Parks - The Complete Guide To All 59 Parks. Just in time for National Parks Week, Danielle and Bryan talk with Becky about her favorite itineraries, tips for families planning summer trips, and her lifelong love affair with the National Park Service (NPS). For summer travel, Becky recommends looking to the mountain parks because they can offer some cooler hiking, biking and scenic drives. Some favorites on the east coast include Acadia National Park, Shenandoah National Park, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Other popular options are Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Glacier National Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park. Parks generally to avoid in the summer and save for cooler months include Saguaro National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, and Big Bend National Park. At Bryan’s request, Becky dreams up some wonderful road trip itineraries if you want to hit multiple destinations in one vacation. East Coast: Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains connected by the Blue Ridge Parkway Central Mountains: Yellowstone and Grand Tetons with either Glacier or Rocky Mountain California: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park and Yosemite National Park Washington State: Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park, and Mount Rainier National Park To enjoy the beauty of the national parks without the crowds, visit lesser known destinations such as Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon, Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Wind Cave National Park, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. If you do find yourself in a crowded spot, remember to hit the trails early for the best experience. Becky’s best recommendation is to take a deep dive into one park at a time. This approach cuts back on driving and gives you the time to go hiking, do some wildlife watching in the evening, to try fishing or kayaking or to swim in the lakes. As she says, “when you can sit in one park and have a whole plethora of experiences you go away essentially just loving that park because you've had such a rich, rich, full time there.” Discussion includes the following: National Park Week activities and free entry day - April 20th to the 28th (3:11) Reflections on National Junior Ranger Day (6:10) How to make the most of your family’s NPS vacation with suggested itineraries and lesser known parks (6:53) One of Becky’s early memories of backpacking as a child in Mount Rainier (15:41) Witnessing the effects of climate change and glaciers melting (18:48) Night Skies, the NPS program that protects nighttime views and one of Becky’s favorite park offerings (22:35) Becky’s favorite memories from Grand Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Kenai National Park, and Yellowstone National Park including a breathtaking moment with the Northern Lights reflecting off a glacier (26:06) Actions: Subscribe to our podcast wherever podcasts are available or from our website https://www.everybodysnationalparks.com/ We also want to hear about your adventures. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

So you listened to episode 58 and you’re convinced of the benefits of outdoor play (https://yourparentingmojo.com/outdoor/) . But you’re a grown-up. You don’t play outdoors. And you don’t know anything about nature.  How can you possibly get started in helping your child to play outdoors more? There are a number of books out there on getting outside with children – some arguably more well-known than this one, but I have to say that Dr. Scott Sampson’s book How to Raise a Wild Child is the BEST book I’ve seen on this topic because it balances just the right amount of information on why it’s important to get outside, with just enough pointers on how to do it, without overwhelming you with hundreds of options to choose between.  And it turns out that you don’t need to know a thing at all about The Environment to have a successful outing with children! If you’ve been wishing you could get outdoors more but just don’t know where to start, then this episode – and book! – are for you. For those of you who get my fortnightly newsletter, which you can receive by subscribing to the show YourParentingMojo.com, you know that I have a bit of a penchant for the outdoors. I went on a 10 day backpacking trip across North Cascades National Park in September, and I’m trying to pass on my love of the outdoors to my daughter, most of our newsletters have a photo at the top and pretty often they go out with an image of her sitting in a stream or clambering over boulders or up to her thighs and a pond wearing waders, of course. And so today we’re going to talk with Dr Scott Sampson, the author of how to raise a wild child, the art and science of falling in love with nature, which I have to say is the best book I’ve read on this topic in terms of balancing information about the science of children in nature with a not overwhelming number of actions that parents can take to raise a wild child. Dr Sampson has the honor of being the first paleontologist we’ve interviewed on this show. He earned both his master’s in anthropology and a phd in zoology from the University of Toronto. He’s currently the president and CEO of Science World British Columbia, which is a pretty cool hands on science museum in Vancouver. And if his name sounds familiar to the parents of preschoolers, it’s because he also hosts the PBS kids series dinosaur train. I’m so excited to discuss this topic that’s so close to my heart. Welcome Dr Sampson. Grizzly Times speaks with Jack Oeflke. Imagine the return of grizzly bear in Washington's vast North Cascades wilderness, where it fulfills its ancient role in the ecosystem! That is what Jack Oeflke of the North Cascades Park Complex discusses in this inspiring show. Ample habitat is available to support a population of several hundred grizzly bears, in an ecosystem that is on a par with Yellowstone and Glacier, but now lacks a reproducing population of bears. Public support is strong for the proposal to reintroduce bears, which could occur in the next few years. A final decision is expected by the end of 2017.  Join the conversation!

The Marie Manuchehri Show...Where Energy and Medicine Meet

Emily Warn was born in San Francisco and moved at the age of seven from the then Bohemian neighborhood in Marin, California to the Orthodox Jewish community in Detroit. For Warn, poetry links music and meaning every bit as powerfully and oddly as religious traditions do, inventing complicated, invisible relations. She moved to the Pacific Northwest 1978 to work for North Cascades National Park, and a year later moved to Seattle where she has lived, more or less ever since. She most recently served as the Webby Award winning founding editor of poetryfoundation.org, and now divides her time between Seattle and Twisp, Washington. Warn has published five collections of poetry, including three books: The Leaf Path (1982), The Novice Insomniac (1996) and Shadow Architect (2008), all from Copper Canyon Press, and two chapbooks The Book of Esther (1986) and Highway Suite (1987). Her essays and poems appear widely, including in Poetry, BookForum, Blackbird, Parabola, The Seattle Times, The Writers' Almanac, The Bloomsbury Review, The Stranger, and Critical Mass the National Book Critics Circle blog. She has taught creative writing or served as writer-in-residence at many schools and arts centers, including Lynchburg College in Virginia, The Bush School in Seattle, Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Centrum Foundation in Port Townsend, and Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico. She was educated at Kalamazoo College and the University of Washington, and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. She is currently taking a year off from teaching and working to write. Emily has also worked in the high-technology, first at Microsoft where she was a Group Programming Manager for Microsoft.com, and later as web consultant, working for amazon.com, The Methow Conservancy, and Farming and the Environment.

More Info Here! 7S3 Stark's Twin Oaks Nestled in the rolling farmland of the fertile Willamette Valley near Portland, Oregon, Stark's Twin Oaks Airpark is ideally located for sightseeing in the Pacific Northwest. The rural location makes for less traffic and a relaxed atmosphere, while providing an easy jumping-off point for flights to either the coast to the west, or the rugged peaks of the Cascade range to the east. The scenery includes a large area of 30cm/pixel aerial photoreal terrain, featuring the various orchards, Alpaca ranches, and small farms in the area. One special point of interest in the area is the massive Glacier rock quarry, located a few miles to the southeast of the field. And what is possibly a first for an FS airport: multiple elevations. Twin Oaks is carved from the side of a gentle slope, and as a result, the Starks' house, garage, and two of the hangars are on a hill overlooking the rest of the field. Lead developer Bill Womack has obsessively researched and photographed the airport over the last few years, with the enthusiastic support of owners Bob and Betty Stark. We're proud to offer the definitive sim rendition of one of Oregon's aviation jewels.
