For Hawaii's Pashyn Santos and Allison Chu, competing in the Netflix series “Squid Game: The Challenge” was unlike anything they've ever done. Out of some 90,000 applicants from around the world, Santos and Chu were both chosen to be in a cast of 456 people vying for a chance to win $4.56 million. Santos — a writer, actress and comedian — was player 368. Meanwhile, Chu — former Miss Hawaii and Miss Hawaii USA — was player 274. Spoiler alert: Both girls got eliminated after the Dalgona round of the competition. In that round, contestants must carefully carve a specific shape out of a honeycomb-like candy without breaking it. They chose between a circle, triangle, star and the most challenging — the umbrella. Ultimately, both Chu and Santos ended up in the umbrella line. Despite leaving the show early on, they said it was an experience they would never forget, and they were happy to make Hawaii proud. It's been quite the year for Lauren Teruya, who represented the state as Miss Hawaii 2022! She is the first Polynesian Explorer and female Fellow in the history of the National Geographic Society. A cultural anthropologist and award-winning filmmaker, she travels worldwide as a conservationist of indigenous wisdom and an advocate for social, environmental and cultural justice. Her keen insights and first-hand accounts from the world's most fragile regions are reshaping Western perspectives on global leadership and cultural evolution. Dr. Elizabeth has been the recipient of numerous honors. Melissa Short Zapin started as a soprano in Honolulu, Hawaii. An unforgettable rendition of Je veux vivre from Romeo et Juliet won her the Miss Hawai‘i title and a place on the famed Miss America stage. There, she won the talent and swimsuit competitions and finished in the top ten. Melissa was first in the NSAL Opera Competition, performing Christine in Phantom of the Opera and Cinderella in Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Both performances won Po'okela awards for Best Female Performer in a Musical. She was a featured guest artist at several galas for the Hawaii Opera Theater. After receiving the Hungarian Arts Music Festival Award, Melissa accompanied famed tenor Marcello Giordani in several concerts appearing at the Fresno Grand Opera House in Dayton, Ohio. Her operatic performances included La Contessa in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Desdemona in Verdi's Otello at Vero Beach, and Musetta in La Boheme. Melissa was the featured soloist in Mozart's Vesperae solennes de Consessore and John Rutter's Mass at the world-famous Carnegie Hall, both of which were highlights of her career. Melissa also worked as a voiceover artist and performer, appearing on television in the hit shows Sex in the City and Elementary with Lucy Liu. Carissa Kano is a teacher at Maemae Elementary School. In 2020, while students were forced to take on virtual learning, Kano wanted to find ways to keep her first-graders engaged. Using costumes and singing, she put on a show for her students — under the impression that the lockdown was only going to last two weeks. In 2021, Kano used her talents to make a video called “Just Choose Love” with over 80 Maemae Elementary School faculty and staff. The song was a twist on the popular K-Pop song, “Boy With Luv,” and took four weeks to recreate. Having their participation in making music videos not only positively impacted her classes, but started to affect more of the school as she got other students and faculty involved. She hosts The Communification Podcast ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Malika Dudley One of my biggest tips would be to look at the lens of the camera instead of the face, because then you will be connecting with your audience more. So you need to sacrifice a little bit yourself. Because for you, it's nice to have that connection and look at the faces that you're looking at. But my recommendation would be to at least go back and forth, if you can. ----- 07:05 Oh, absolutely. I think everyone can relate to that, right. And what's awful about zoom, is that a lot people are not good audience members. So maybe one thing for our audience members is that when you are attending a zoom, make sure that you're doing the same things that you would do in person. you don't want to look bored, or maybe you're someone could be reacting to some, they're looking at their phone, and they get some kind of a whatever on their phone. And so they have this weird look on their face, you would never know because you're you have no idea what's happening in their room. So it's very different than in person where I can tell when someone's checked out, and they're looking at their phone, maybe they're reacting to their phone, or if I have everyone's engagement, and so as an audience member, it's really important to nod your head and smile, use those facial expressions to really give encouragement to your speaker. And then yes, as the speaker, you, you kind of have to take it all with a grain of salt. And in fact, when I do speeches that are online, or if I have a presentation, I actually will put my notes up on top like in my screen, so I won't be able to actually see faces. And, my dad always told me that you need to practice until it looks like you never practice today and in your in your life. ----- 26:53 Communification Did a word search online. And this was a word in the urban dictionary. And so they combined communication with beautification. So it's the beautification of your communication. But also the more I searched online, I found that some people use this word communification to describe the unification of community. And both of those things are the goals and the vision for my podcast. And when you listen to the podcast, not only will it help you to unlock your communication potential by teaching you these tangible research, base communication, strategies for navigating through things like apologizing, you know, when someone lies to you, or if you are being deceptive. My first season is about communication and technology. So a lot of things like cyber bullying and phubbing, which is phone snubbing. So, you know, it's, it's just a place for us to learn and grow. And then the opposite side of it is I think people need to feel like they are not alone. They want to know that when they're struggling, and we all feel this way. We just think, oh, my gosh, I'm the I'm the only one I'm the failure. I'm the one that just sucks at this. But no, you are not alone. So many people struggle with the same issues. I have a guest on usually, it's a celebrity, like my first episode was with the bucket list family, who has two and a half million followers on Instagram and all over, all over the internet. They're, they're very, very popular. And we talked about how social media, you know, impacts their communication. And so it's really great to kind of hear from these people that live this day in and day out, when you see that they struggle. I mean, this woman who has millions of followers, is feeling depressed and judged and needs to take a break, then I think that makes us normal people feel so much better. When we go, oh, wow, I feel the same way. But I thought I was all alone. And look at this girl who is liked by millions of people and still feels the very same exact way. Because guess what? We may be in the tech age but cultural anthropologist Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey believes we are starved for wisdom—about everything from the way nature works to how we should view self-worth. And she believes that—in a culture that's obsessed with youth—that wisdom can be found by turning to our elders, found in some of the most remote parts of the earth. Dr. Lindsey, the first Polynesian explorer and female Fellow in the history of the National Geographic Society, has spent her career traveling to the world’s most inaccessible regions documenting indigenous mastery and science. She has studied a tribe of South Pacific way finders (celestial navigators) who sail thousands of miles without the use of maps or instruments as well as a group of sea nomads who averted danger during the 2004 tsunami. Black Devil Disco Club This rare live set was recorded at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona in June 2007. Black Devil 'Disco Club' ep was one of the most legendary and sought after of all the leftfield disco records of the late 70s, meshing insistent live drumming, hypnotic electronics, tape loops and sidereal vocals into a mysterious, dark and delirious disco masterwork.
