In this episode of the Tell Us Something podcast, four storytellers share their true personal story on the theme “Going Home”. Our stories today were recorded live in person in front of a packed house on June 11, 2024, as part of the opening Missoula Pride events. In our first story, Kiki Hubbard, her mother and her grandmother are on a plane returning back to the United States from former Yugoslavia after a trip tracing their ancestry. The grandmother, a strong immigrant who fled war and violence, is frustrated because customs won’t let her bring bacon into the US. Kiki calls her story “What Bacon?” Kiki Hubbard graduated from the University of Montana's Environmental Studies program and now works remotely for the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an academic collaborator with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Kiki lives in Missoula, by way of Wisconsin and Washington D.C., and is a national expert in policy issues that affect our nation’s seed supply. She's passionate about protecting family farms and community food systems from unfair and destructive corporate practices. Next up is Adria Jwort, who, as a trans woman, wrestles with Montana’s anti-LGBTQ climate and complex relationship with her dad. The Club Q shooting prompts her to return home, prioritizing family despite ongoing struggles. We call her story “From Vegas to Montana — A Father's Call”. Adria L. Jawort is a Northern Cheyenne fiction writer and transgender/2 Spirit journalist based in Billings, Montana. Her writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Electric Literature, and Indian Country Today, among other publications. She is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Indigenous Transilience. You can also find her on Instagram. In our next story, Teri Wing leaves Butte, MT for convent life before leaving and finding love and family. Her journey home was a wild ride. Teri calls her story “Going home: The Long Way Around”. Teri Wing is a born and raised Montananan. The mother of two and a grandmother of three boys, Teri is a retired educator who loves dogs and other living things. She hasn't yet climbed tall mountains, run a marathon, or jumped out of a plane, though she says she may put those on her bucket list. Our final storyteller in this episode, Chloe Williams, searches for happiness in love, places, & self-expression before finally figuring out what love is and where to find it. Chloe calls her story “The Rusty Screeching Turn Toward Home”. Chloe Williams is many things. She is a seeker, a painter, a middle school teacher, a mother, a partner, and a friend. Hailing from the West Coast, Chloe was born in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and raised in San Francisco. She spent some summers on a farm in Illinois. Eventually, she spent seventeen years in Portland, Oregon and ten years ago moved to Missoula. Chloe has lived at approximately forty addresses in her life, though she really has lost count. Storytelling was passed down from her mom in the many long car rides of her childhood and is her favorite thing her mother gave her. Only in the last few years has she been called to try storytelling herself, and it feels like something her spirit needs to do.

Edgar Hoover's FBI snooping, and the Kennedy administration's “Get Castro” obsession in Washington.Thomas Maier is among the first to take full advantage of the National Archives' 2017–18 release of the long-suppressed JFK files, many of which deal with the CIA's top secret anti-Castro operation in Florida and Cuba. With several new investigative findings, Mafia Spies is a spy exposé, murder mystery, and shocking true story that recounts America's first foray into the assassination business, a tale with profound impact for today's Trump era. Warren Ham Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What an absolutely delightful sit down with multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Warren Ham. As much as I was blown away seeing him do his thing (s) Live with Ringo and his All Starr Band, singing lead, background vocals, playing flute, sax, harmonica, keyboards, and percussion, I'm exhausted just typing it, let alone watching him work the entire multi-level stage, I was equally impressed chatting with him. What an engaging, fun, open, self-effacing, lovely, ridiculously talented, accessible, human. Warren started us with his family's gospel group, recording his first album at 5. What a slacker! Country music and mandolin with his guitar-playing older brother Bill followed. While Warren sang and played harmonica with every garage band in Fort Worth, Bill was playing on TV on The Sonny & Cher Show, paving the way for things to come. Bloodrock and three albums followed and then dueting with Cher for three years in Vegas and meeting… well, pretty much everyone. From Vegas to Kansas- the band not the place, great story there, and a whole lot more instruments added to Warren's repertoire, plus stadiums…Donna Summer, on and off for years, Amy Grant, Toto, another great story there, Olivia Newton-John, lots of great stories there, including a couple about a guy named Travolta. Always professional, there were years of consumption, and then 15 years ago, sobriety, when Warren claims, his life shifted for the better in all ways. A fortuitous Facebook message led to a Beatle, he's spent ten years with Ringo, his greatest gig of all, doing double duty with Luke on Toto, too. There's a 42-year marriage, in rock years beyond miraculous, and two amazing kids, check out son Robert's wonderful short film on Warren, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muxaj-HOGBE, daughter Rachel Talbot has over a million followers on YouTube - the apples don't fall far… It's stunning to consider not only all that Warren can do, and does, but also that he does it all, brilliantly. And, he can dance. And act. Is there anything this man can't do? Odds are crap on that. Could the "Leprechaun" movie franchise actually serve up a more twisted St. Patrick's Day than a pint of green beer? Brace yourselves for Cory and Nick's riotous romp through the cult classic series that's as unpredictable as the Irish weather. This episode is all about playing "Marry, Sex, Kill" with the mischievously murderous Leprechaun films. Join us as we choose which installment to wed for eternity (The Best), which to indulge in for a single night (Guilty Pleasure), and which one deserves a swift end (The Worst). We even toss in a feisty debate over the Boondock Saints and ponder the endless trek of the Walking Dead series, with no sacred shamrocks left unturned.Nostalgia abounds as we reminisce about Jennifer Aniston's pre-Friends brush with the Leprechaun, marveling at the film's evolution from a potential kids' movie to R-rated horror. We crack up over the series' zigzagging plots and on-the-spot myth-making, while giving a nod to actors who've come to embrace these quirky early roles in their glittering careers. From Vegas ventures and Martian princess escapades to the chaotic charm of "Leprechaun in the Hood," we've got enough laughs to fill a pot o' gold. Finally, we wrap our chat with a lively discussion about the impact of horror genre shifts on our beloved Leprechaun and his slasher film brethren. Mark's recipe originated from an old newspaper column, “Mostly for Men.” From its inception, Mark has tweaked the recipe now using beer and mostly all his homegrown ingredients. Beans? Much to Mark's chagrin, there are no beans allowed in traditional red chili and can lead to disqualification. Mark also talks about cheating among chili cooks and competing against your wife! Bestselling author and producer Thomas Maier visits Second Sunday Books to chat with host Libby Fischer Hellmann about his new release Mafia Spies: The Inside Story of the CIA, Gangsters, JFK, and Castro. From bestselling author and the producer of the hit cable series Masters of Sex, Thomas Maier, comes a true story of espionage and mobsters, based on the never-before-released JFK Files. From Vegas to Miami to Havana, the shocking connections between the CIA, the mob, and Sinatra’s Rat Pack—with new revelations and details. Mafia Spies is the definitive account of America’s most remarkable espionage plots ever—with CIA agents, mob hitmen, “kompromat” sex, presidential indiscretion, and James Bond-like killing devices together in a top-secret mystery full of surprise twists and deadly intrigue. In the early 1960s, two top gangsters, Johnny Roselli and Sam Giancana, were hired by the CIA to kill Cuba’s Communist leader, Fidel Castro, only to wind up murdered themselves amidst Congressional hearings and a national debate about the JFK assassination. Mafia Spies revolves around the outlaw friendship of these two mob buddies and their fascinating world of CIA spies, fellow Mafioso in Chicago, Cuban exile commandos in Miami, beautiful Hollywood women, famous entertainers like Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack in Las Vegas, Castro’s own spies in Havana and his double agents hidden in Florida, J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI snooping, and the Kennedy administration’s “Get Castro” obsession in Washington. Thomas Maier is among the first to take full advantage of the National Archives’ 2017–18 release of the long-suppressed JFK files, many of which deal with the CIA’s top secret anti-Castro operation in Florida and Cuba. With several new investigative findings, Mafia Spies is a spy exposé, murder mystery, and shocking true story that recounts America’s first foray into the assassination business, a tale with profound impact for today’s Trump era. Who killed Johnny and Sam—and why wasn’t Castro assassinated despite the CIA’s many clandestine efforts? This is podcast owned solely by Authors On The Air Global Radio Network.

This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Here is the news. President Xi Jinping has called for improved birth, employment and elderly policies to cope with the country's aging population in a "timely, scientific and comprehensive" manner. Xi made the remarks in a written instruction made public recently. He says coping with the aging population is crucial for development and hundreds of millions of people's well-being. He calls for better top-down design based on current situations and future expectations. The president stresses that this issue should be put on high agenda and relevant work should be carried out during the 2016 to 2020 period. China has well over 200 million people aged 60 or above, more than 15 percent of the total population. The figure is expected to reach 243 million by 2020. Old age care lags far behind demand and varies greatly between regions. In a separate written instruction, Premier Li Keqiang has urged authorities to take a scientific approach to policies and suggestions on the aging issue. In a recent meeting, Wang Yong, head of the National Working Commission on Aging, has urged related departments to get down to work. He says the focus should be on pressing issues for the elderly, so they feel the benefit. This is NEWS Plus Special English. A recent government guideline on urban planning has sparked heated debate among Internet users over opening up gated residential communities to public road system; and an online poll shows that a majority of participants oppose it. The guideline says the roads in the newly established communities will be open to the public, becoming part of the urban road system. The old communities will gradually connect their roads to the public roads. That is to better utilize the urban land and optimize the urban road network. The news on gated communities triggered uproar among Internet users. The news was forwarded 15,000 times and generated 3,600 comments overnight on Sina Weibo, a twitter-like microblogging site. Many Internet users have expressed concern over the potential risks from opening up the gated communities, including noise and air pollution, traffic congestion and public safety. One Internet user says such highlight in the guideline might violate the country's property law, since the home owners also paid for the roads in the communities when they bought the apartments. In a latest development, a senior judge has hinted at possible revisions to the law when responding to the public concern about the opening up. While expounding the 2007 Property Law, the senior judge with the Supreme People's Court says there is still a continuing process to realize the rule of law through legislation. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Beijing plans to almost double the number of air monitoring stations to give a better idea about the true state of the city's air quality. An extra 30 monitoring stations will be added to the 35 already in operation. The stations will cover middle schools, mountainous areas and rural areas, and there will also be more monitor vehicles. Currently, the 35 existing stations observe six categories of pollutants including PM2.5, a major contaminant for Beijing's bad air. Environment authority says the upgrade will provide more data about the city's air quality. Technical preparation of the new monitor stations has been completed, though there is no timeframe for when the new stations will come online. For Beijing and its surrounding regions, the government has set a target of reducing pollution by 40 percent from 2013 levels by 2020. A senior environment official says the city's air quality has improved over the last two years. The authorities have increased efforts to reduce air pollution in the wake of the city's first "red alerts" in December, when smog engulfed the city. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Young people in China who plan to study in the United States are being advised to seek alternatives to the Scholastic Assessment Test, as a recent overhaul has made it more challenging for non-English speakers. A consultant director of the Beijing-based AW Education International says she was advising all her clients to sit the American College Test instead. This is another college placement test in the United States and suitable for those who plan to enroll in the fall semester of 2017. New sample questions from the revised Scholastic Assessment Test do not include many of the question types that Chinese students are usually good at. More time will be required for the students to prepare for the test if they want good scores. Other overseas study consultancy firms have also suggested that their clients turn to other tests. Many Chinese students were admitted to some of the best American universities after scoring high or even full marks in the former tests, but the changes may mean it is no longer easy for Chinese students to excel. Consultancy experts anticipated a reduction in the number of Chinese students taking the test this year. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Twenty-five people have been punished after they were implicated in the illegal disposal of hazardous chemicals, which killed four people in east China's Shandong Province. In October, two of the victims, Zhang Linde and Chen Jixin, hired a tanker to transport dangerous liquid chemical waste to an abandoned coal mine in the province. The two, their driver and a supercargo died from poisoning as a result of dumping the chemicals. Police say twenty-five suspects have been dealt with according to criminal procedures while several others are at large. Five local companies were involved in the case and have been suspended operation. The polluted area has been enclosed in curtain grouting, and the local environment agency is decontaminating the mine. This is NEWS Plus Special English. More than 16,700 people died as a result of infectious diseases on the Chinese mainland last year. According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, more than 6.4 million cases of infectious diseases were reported on the mainland. Of the total, 13 cases of cholera, categorized as a Class A infectious disease under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, were reported with no deaths. More than three million cases were classified as Class B infectious diseases, which resulted in 16,600 deaths. HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, rabies, hepatitis, and human infection of H7N9 avian influenza accounted for almost 99 percent of deaths in this category. Category C diseases were responsible for more than 3.4 million cases and 160 deaths. Foot and mouth disease, infectious diarrhea, and influenza were the most prevalent in this category, accounting for almost 98 percent of deaths. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. With great verve and passion, Chinese people around the world have celebrated their Lantern Festival in both traditional and trendy ways. The festival, which fell on Feb. 22 this year, brought an end to this year's Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations. It is the day when people see themselves starting a new life in a new year. In China, Lantern Festival is an important family day, but unlike Spring Festival when people stay home for family dinners, it is a day for going out and about. In southwest China's Sichuan Province, 20 dragon dance troupes gathered in Luxian County. A team of dancers under a long "dragon costume" painted red or gold used poles to manipulate the dragon's head and serpentine body. They danced to the accompaniment of drums, twisting the dragon as it danced, shaking its head and swinging its tail through the crowds. Another folk tradition, the Yangko dance, was performed in Yan'an city, the "red cradle" of the Chinese revolution in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. Staging the dance on Lantern Festival has become a tradition in the city. This year, around 3,000 performers in bright costumes with colorful umbrellas, fans and red ribbons danced to local folk music and drums. In Taiwan, the annual lantern exhibition has as its centerpiece a 26-meter figure of the Monkey King, the leading character in the Chinese classic "Journey to the West" to celebrate the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac. In Shanghai, the Yuyuan Garden Fair not only presents traditional lanterns but also the latest high-tech lighting. With a monkey theme, the lantern fair features lasers and pop music. The modern shows attract huge numbers of people. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Tourists from the Chinese mainland are spending more in Taiwan than any other group. Local paper Economic Daily News reports that Japanese tourists were used to top the list for highest average expenditure per person daily when traveling in Taiwan. It is the first time that Chinese mainland tourists have taken the top spot since Taiwan opened up its tourism to visitors from Chinese mainland in 2008. According to Taiwan's tourism authority, every traveler from Chinese mainland on average spent 230 U.S. dollars per day, more than the average expenditure of 220 dollars Japanese spent in the first three quarters last year. Also, every Chinese mainland tourist on average spent almost 123 dollars on shopping, or 40 dollars more than that spent by a Japanese tourist. Japanese tourists have cut down on overseas spending as the yen devaluated sharply and domestic consumption tax rose. The daily expense of Japanese and Chinese mainland tourist in 2014 was 243 and 242 dollars respectively. This is NEWS Plus Special English. China's box office sales totaled 580 million yuan, roughly 88 million U.S. dollars, on Valentine's Day, representing a new high from previous years. China Film News reports that the box office surged by more than 150 percent from the same day last year. More than half of the sales were generated by "Mermaid", a sci-fi comedy by Stephen Chow, a famed Hong Kong director and comedian. "The Monkey King 2" took the second place with around 95 million yuan, while "From Vegas to Macau III", starring Hong Kong actors Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, scored 85 million yuan to come in third. The Valentine's Day box office in 2016 increased markedly due to the date closely following the Spring Festival holiday, which ended on Feb. 13th. The newspaper says the box office surge during the Spring Festival holiday, which totaled 3 billion yuan from Feb. 8 to 13, spilled over into the Valentine's Day. For the past two years, Valentine's Day was several days before or after the holiday. This is NEWS Plus Special English. (全文见周日微信。)

The research fields cover agriculture, energy, the environment and health, as well as strategic fields key to industrial competitiveness, innovation and national security. The plan now covers 59 specific projects. It merges several prominent state sci-tech programs focused on key fields including biotechnology, space, information and energy. Breakthroughs of the programs included supercomputer Tianhe-1, manned deep-sea research submarine Jiaolong, and super hybrid rice. The plan aims to address low efficiency resulting from redundant programs. More than 100 projects will be merged into five plans, namely, natural science, major sci-tech, key research and development plan, technical innovation and the sci-tech human resources. The national key research and development plan is the first to be started. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Chinese scientists have developed a system to measure the leak rate for a vacuum environment which will be used in the country's third step moon exploration program. The measurement system will help scientists work out a better way to preserve samples from the moon, which are stored in a vacuum capsule, increasing the accuracy of research. The third step of the lunar exploration project involves taking samples from the surface of the moon and bringing them back to earth. The samples will be packed in a vacuum environment. The accuracy of measuring the finest leak in a vacuum capsule will have direct impact on the research result of the samples. The system will ensure a similar vacuum environment as found on the moon. It will also make sure that the two kilograms of samples remain uncontaminated on their way back to earth, preventing them from being affected by any kinds of environment changes, including extremely high or low temperatures. China has a three-step moon exploration project, namely, orbiting, landing and returning from the moon. Chang'e-5 lunar probe is expected to be launched around 2017 to finish the last chapter of the project. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Chinese researchers have successfully created autistic monkeys by implanting autism-related genes into monkey embryos. The monkeys are the world's first nonhuman primates to show the effects of autism. The study will play an important role in studying the pathology of the condition and exploring effective intervention and treatment. The research has demonstrated the feasibility of studying brain disorders with genetically engineered primates. That's according to neuroscientist Muming Poo, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States. Poo says for quite a long time, there has been little good drug innovation in autism due to the lack of suitable animal models. This work will allow researchers to conduct deeper studies into autism and the brain's working mechanism. Autism spectrum disorder is one of a range of neurodevelopment problems. People with the condition usually exhibit defects in social interaction, stereotyped repetitive behaviors, anxiety and emotional difficulties. In recent years, the incidence of autism has continued to rise globally, and there is no effective treatment. Around four in every 1,000 Chinese children between ages 6 and 12 have the condition. Southwest China's Guizhou Province is expected to evacuate more than 9,000 people for the protection of the world's largest ever radio telescope before its completion in September. The evacuation is facilitated by a proposal delivered last year by members of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the top advisory body. The proposal asks the provincial government to remove local homes less than 5 kilometers away from the Aperture Spherical Telescope, to create a sound electromagnetic wave environment. Guizhou is expected to resettle people from two counties in four settlements by the end of September. Each of the involved residents will get 12,000 yuan, roughly 1,800 U.S. dollars subsidy for the resettlement; and each ethnic minority household with housing difficulties will get 10,000 yuan subsidy. Construction of the telescope began in March 2011 with an investment of 1.2 billion yuan. Upon completion, the telescope, which is 500 meters in diameter, will become the world's largest of its kind. It will overtake the one in Puerto Rico, which is 300 meters in diameter. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Central China's Hunan Province is offering a reward to anyone who can decode the inscription on the back of six ancient gold coins. The Cultural Relics Bureau of Jinshi City has offered 10,000 yuan, roughly 1,500 U.S. dollars, to anyone who can explain the mystery of the coins, housed in the city's museum. A small white glazed pot containing six foreign gold coins was discovered at a farm in the 1960s and was sent to the museum in the 1980s. They are classified as top-level national cultural relics. These coins were manufactured using ancient Greek coinage method at least 650 years ago. The inscription on the front, in a rare type of Arabic, is the name of a King, but the information on the back remains unexplained. Cultural relics officials have consulted Chinese and foreign experts, but to no avail. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Online retailer Amazon China has unveiled its annual list of most romantic cities, with Zhengzhou in Henan Province declared the most romantic Chinese city of 2015. Zhengzhou led the country in the proportion of books sold last year on the topics of romance, relationship and marriage. Cities of Erdos and Baotou, both in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, ranked second and third. Among the top ten, northern Chinese cities outnumbered the southern for the first time. According to Amazon, the result does not necessarily mean that people in northern China are more romantic than their southern counterparts; and the ranking reveals many factors, not just the cultural environment of a city. China's four first-tier cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, did not feature in the top 40. Amazon says it appears that residents in smaller cities are under less pressure and have more leisure time to enjoy romantic literature. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. Fewer fireworks were used across China in the Lunar New Year, as it was banned in many places over air pollution concerns. Two thirds of people polled in 35 major Chinese cities last year were in favor of fireworks bans at Spring Festival. The research was done by the center for public opinion research at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Public concerns over air quality means people routinely check air quality and wear masks, and many own air purifiers at home. Data from the Ministry of Environmental Protection suggests that air quality only improved marginally last year in the area around Beijing. In Shanghai, fireworks are banned completely downtown, and firework purchases require real name registration to track violators. A total of 140 cities in China have banned fireworks, while another 540 cities have restrictions in place. Fewer fireworks have made sanitation workers' life easier. They cleaned up 80 percent less firework waste in Shanghai this year. In nearby Hangzhou, the host city of this year's G20 summit, fireworks have been banned for the whole year, and police have offered rewards for reporting any sales, storage, transportation or setting off of fireworks. But some people are concerned that the ban kills off a tradition, calling fireworks makers to develop more environmentally friendly alternatives. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. The winning names are "Olympia" and "Fuwa", and were posted by the president of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach. Both names came out on top after five pairs of names were put up for a final vote. "Fuwa" is the name of the mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. After the twins were born in June, the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center launched the project to solicit names for the cubs between July and September. More than 3,000 responses, including 900 from outside the Chinese mainland, were submitted through Sina Weibo microblog, messaging app WeChat and e-mail. The twin sisters have attracted great attention worldwide because of their famous family. Their mother "Kelin" is well known for a photo showing her watching a "panda porn" video. The photo was chosen by the United States' Time Magazine as one of the "Most Surprising Photos of 2013". The twins' grandfather "Cobi" was named by former president of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch in 1992. This is NEWS Plus Special English. China's box office totaled 3 billion yuan, roughly 460 million U.S. dollars, during the Spring Festival holiday week, the highest compared with previous holidays. The film authority says the box office from Feb. 8 to 13 increased by 67 percent over the same period of last year. Three Chinese movies contributed to almost 94 percent of the box office in this period. Among them, "Mermaid", directed by Hong Kong comedian and director Stephen Chow, led the box office by making 1.5 billion yuan. "From Vegas to Macau III", starring Hong Kong actors Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, scored 680 million yuan, while "The Monkey King 2" took the third place with 650 million yuan. "Kung Fu Panda 3" was also a success, profiting 812 million yuan, since its screening on Jan. 29. China's box office earnings reached 44 billion yuan last year, up almost 50 percent over that of 2014. The number of audience totaled 1.3 billion, a year-on-year increase of 51 percent. China has been one of the most fast-growing film markets across the world. As more cinemas open in smaller cities and towns, going to watch movies becomes a lifestyle in those places. Experts say China may overtake the United States to be the world's largest film market in the next two to three years. This is NEWS Plus Special English. (全文见周日微信。)

In 2015, China&`&s movie industry witnessed progress in almost every aspect of filmmaking. As infrastructure building continued to expand, new box office records were cropping up by the month. The changes in the moviegoing demographic impacted on the genres of films rolling off the production line. Stories that appeal to a wider range of audience in smaller cities saw significant increase in numbers. In the year 2016, the same pattern will most likely continue. Among the movies that have already booked a release date, a large proportion of them fall into the comedy category. At least five will hit Chinese cinemas in the latter half of January alone, but none seems to possess the necessary firepower to trigger a box office explosion. The most promising candidate, according to information available so far, is likely to debut on April 1st in the form of "Chongqing Hot Pot," starring Chen Kun and Bai Baihe.Chen and Bai have each appeared in a movie with more than a billion yuan income in the year 2015, this year they rally under Yang Qing, producer of a previous box office record-holder "Lost in Thailand," to form the formula for an explosion in the market. A slight deviation from the established pattern is, the first day of the lunar new year now becomes a rather coveted spot. Traditionally people have thought of this time of year as an occasion for family reunions and friendly visits, but since 2014 the cinemas have made it into their itineraries. This probably has something to do with young migrant office workers patronizing newly built local cinemas in their hometowns. Their enthusiasm for entertainment in places of limited choices led to cordial reception for many mediocre films that could have remained obscure in a different time.Anyway, today only the most competitive movies occupy the privileged time slots during the Spring Festival, and these include "Mermaid" by Stephen Chow, "The Monkey King 2" by Cheang Pou-Soi, "From Vegas to Macau" by Wang Jing and "Guonianhao" or "Happy New Year" by Gao Qunshu.Stephen Chow is almost a god-fatherly figure among China&`&s young movie fans, his unique humorous style and keen sense of observation provide an amusing perspective in the analysis of humanity, while his fame has guaranteed ample resources at his command in the process of filmmaking. "Mermaid" could be a compelling choice for viewers during the festival, but nonetheless they need to tune down their expectation a bit. Since Mr. Chow has refrained from appearing in his own films, he has not found a worthy substitute actor that can quite imitate his demeanor and style in front of the camera. Two years ago, when director Cheang Pou-Soi promoted "The Monkey King: Havoc in the Heavenly Kingdom," he highlighted the ground-breaking special effects. But in fact the level of special effects did not come close to the level of his boasting. Now, two years have transpired, the filmmakers are once again stressing the special effects in the sequel. I certainly hope they live up to their promise this time, but hoping is all I can do about this one.Wang Jing&`&s "From Vegas to Macau" is also a sequel, according to Mr. Wang&`&s previous track record and the performance of two prequels, there may not be any surprises, pleasant or unpleasant. The size of this film&`&s income will most likely be proportionate to the size of total box office income during the festival season.Director Gao Qunshu has always been quite proficient at speculating what the viewers want, but his recent outings indicate he may not be as proficient at delivering it. This year he joins hands with popular skit actor Zhao Benshan in "Guonianhao". The latter has repeatedly appeared on China Central Television&`&s New Year Gala, China&`&s most watched show in the past couple of decades. So Zhao is a strong presence associated with the New Year and therefore may attract people who still bother to watch the gala. By tapping into people&`&s strong feelings about family and tradition, "Guonianhao" could be a strong competitor against Stephen Chow&`&s "Mermaid," and it is going to be an epic battle between modernity and tradition.A lesser competitor, or rather, a more likely casualty in the spring festival season is Chinese science fiction film "Lost in the Pacific." It is a thriller story happening on an intercontinental airliner. The only notable member of the team is Zhang Yuqi, who starred in her ex-husband and director Wang Quan&`&an&`&s drama film "White Deer Plain." And regarding special effects, which many consider the face of science fiction films, the word we are looking for is "crude," as suggested by the posters at the moment. So there is hardly any reason for the film to survive the fierce competition and the best option is to reschedule. But speaking of science fiction, the year 2016 will see more titles being made under that genre. Come July, film adaptation of science fiction novel and Nebula Award winner "The Three-Body Problem" will be released in the cinemas. So far little is known about the adaptation, except for a trailer featuring concept pictures. But the producer of the film Kong Xiangzhao has made some unsettling remarks, saying "The Three-Body Problem" is the greatest science fiction novel by a Chinese writer in decades, centuries or even millennia, so it is only fair to have a Chinese studio handle the adaptation, that way no one will feel regrettable when the project fails. The arrogance of Mr. Kong is fueled by the amount of investment he has secured, but when it comes to resources, no one can quite challenge the status of Zhang Yimou. For decades before hot money even began pouring into China&`&s movie industry, Mr. Zhang has been generous in the graphics of his films. Now he works for one of China&`&s largest private video portals. In 2015, his colleague at LeTV Lu Chuan released adventure film "Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe," a lousy story with stunning visual effects, imagine what Zhang Yimou as a much more influential figure in the industry can deliver in his upcoming science fiction story "The Great Wall."Other phenomenal Chinese movies now scheduled to released in 2016 include "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny," "Cold War II," "Finding Mr. Right II" and "L.O.R.D." But as their titles suggest, a lot of them are going to be sequels following previous successful titles. The trend indicates a significant amount of risk involved in the industry, much like what&`&s going on in Hollywood.
